My roots are very firmly Cornish, and although I was born in Liskeard, I haven't lived there since I was six and we moved 'upcountry' to Devon. Since then I've been moving even more 'upcountry', to Bristol where I did my teacher training, to Forest Gate in Newham where I had my first teaching, and from there to Oxford, where I worked for BT for three years, and then Waltham Abbey. Finally to Norwich where my sons grew up and I taught music. Norwich is a wonderful place to live, but after twenty or so years, it was time to move again, this time to be with my partner, now my wife. I actually moved to 'The North' and now live in Worksop, Nottinghamshire.
Most of my working life has been spent teaching music, both in schools and giving private piano lessons. I'm still in touch with one of my pupils who I took from the very beginning to Grade 8. He is now a professor in Australia!
As well as music, my passion has always been reading and books, so now, as a writer I'm living the dream.

This book pulled me in right away. The setup—possible infidelity and a woman playing detective after hearing a client gush about a new guy who sounds suspiciously like her husband—was exactly the kind of twisty drama I love. This is my go-to type of read: fast-paced, intriguing, and hard to put down.

The story was exciting, and I found myself eager to see how it would all unfold. However, the ending fell a bit flat for me. I was hoping for something darker or more impactful. Still, it was an enjoyable read that kept me turning the pages.

In Cutting It Fine, we read the story of Rose, a hairdresser, who is happily married to her high school sweetheart, Olly. Everything changes when Rose's client, an influencer named Em, informs her that she has a new man in her life; Rose later figures out that Em's new man happens to be Rose's husband, Olly.

Although the plot got interesting at times, I wish the story had more unexpected turns and twists.

This book was just ok for me. I read another book from this author before, and absolutely loved it. So I decided to read this one, expecting the same type of feeling. It wasn't a bad story, it was definitely interesting. It just didn't grip me the way I had hoped it would. I can't say I don't recommend it, because I'm sure plenty of other readers will enjoy it! I still plan to try others from the author, because I do feel she is talented!

This is a great book that kept me engaged from start to finish. The book never felt rushed or too slow, just a nice pace of events unfolding when expected. The plot line is solid with plenty of moments that I'm sure anyone has thought of in a moment of anger. While this is nice steady read I would have liked a couple OMG moments where you just weren't expecting the outcome. I definitely recommend this to anyone who appreciates a good steady story that is satisfying at the end. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

She thought she was just giving her client a trim — not slicing into her own marriage.

You know that moment at the salon where gossip gets so juicy you stop pretending to scroll your phone? That’s where this book hooked me. Cutting It Fine starts with an absolute bombshell: Rose, our everyday hairdresser-turned-accidental-detective, finds out her husband is dating one of her clients. Yep. The drama’s as sharp as her scissors.
The setup is solid and the pacing keeps you flipping pages — Billett nails the vibe of emotional chaos when your life suddenly derails. I felt for Rose. She’s like that friend who makes one bad decision and you’re yelling “Noooo!” at the book like it’s a horror movie.

That said… the moment where things start to go sideways? Felt a bit soap-opera-meets-after-school-special. One particular “villain” scene’s tension needed a little more finesse and a little less “mwahaha.” I found it unconvincing.
But the interpersonal stuff? Chef’s kiss. The emotional reactions were realistic — especially the cheaters, who were so gloriously self-absorbed I wanted to throw a flat iron at them. Rose’s journey felt grounded, relatable, and human. Just wish the plot had packed a few more curveballs — I live for twists, and this one played it a bit safe.
Still, it’s a solid read. Worth it for anyone who likes domestic drama with a side of betrayal, and a main character you can genuinely root for.

Intriguing, Comprehensive, Elaborate

Genre: Contemporary Fiction/Family Drama/Suspense

Cutting It Fine by Sheena Billett ✂️

From the time that Rose met Olly, she had taken on the role of protector. He had been the vulnerable one, insecure and sensitive. However, she’d had a hard time recognising when that role became obsolete, and that her husband was in fact, able to think and act for himself. Therefore, when she is presented with evidence, that within his quest of self-discovery, he has betrayed her, she is quick to attribute the blame elsewhere, desiring revenge without damaging her relationship. Is that ever possible? What could have been rectified with a single conversation, results in Rose unwittingly entangling herself in an elaborate plan orchestrated by someone who wanted much more than a trim and blow-dry.
I initially read this through as a beta reader prior to publishing. My initial thoughts on the book were that the plot was overly complicated and that Rose’s actions were maybe a little extreme. I submitted my thoughts to the author but was reticent to write a review at that stage as certain aspects of the narrative hadn’t seemed entirely clear to me. In both her last novel, ‘Eagle Court’, and ‘Cutting It Fine’, Sheena explores storylines and characters with much darker themes. This worked for me in both cases but the shocking element is used differently. Whereas in Eagle Court, the reader is hit with the erroneous actions of the main character throughout, the real twist is unveiled towards the end of the novel. In ‘Cutting it Fine’ the shock factor is increased as the narrative progresses as we find out how far Rose is prepared to go to safeguard her future as Dan ups the ante.
Right from the start it is evident that Rose’s sense of a key part of her life unravelling, instantly activates a deep seated insecurity. This is interpreted by the author’s description of her body language and her dialogue. She is a creature of habit and her life has been the same way for so long, she panics at the thought of it being forced to change. This is evident in her childhood family nights. She also finds it difficult to face up to situations that don’t comply with the way she wants them to be, as was shown in the way that she snaps at Poppy when she is asking her best friend to impart to her what she sees at her place of work. It’s in this first stage of the story that she comes across as quite sinister as she becomes more unhinged. Her ‘online’ activities are, I think quite the norm for someone to resort to nowadays. For me, it gets weird when she almost convinces herself that her digital persona is in fact someone else, therefore minimising or completely absolving in her mind, responsibility for the trolling. I thought that she was very well written with her complex nature apparent within the writing. Her persistent propensity to create problems was frustrating and I certainly don’t credit her with much intelligence, but her honesty was commendable. 📱
Linking the main part of the plan that Poppy originally suggests to Rose, with Rose’s job, is clever, making it easy to execute. I really liked the characters that Sheena created that worked with Rose, and their camaraderie, even in the midst of volatile and difficult times. The character of Em is accurately depicted as being like so many young people today, who decide to use social media sites to get themselves noticed and popularise their chosen activity or subject. Those people that we pretend to loathe for their perfect, pristine existences, we just can’t help being fascinated by and having our say on everything they do. Although at first, she does give the impression of being vacuous, I thought that she actually demonstrated a level of maturity and thought that put Rose to shame.👄💅
In the back of the book, the reader is asked to consider five aspects of the story. These are my thoughts:
What did I think of Olly – I do think he is weak to have given in to Em’s charms. However, I think that together with his new found form, probably came a new found confidence that he wanted to explore within his work, which was separate from his life with his wife. I think he was justified in his anger towards Rose as she hadn’t demonstrated any faith in him inasmuch as she hadn’t had that much needed conversation with him and had instead foolishly endangered his life.🏋‍♀️
Do I feel any sympathy for Rose – In her need to get revenge, she got carried away with the suggestion of a plan, which I think is believable although I’m not sure many people would be as extreme. She unwittingly put her faith in the wrong person. Who hasn’t done that? 💔
What do I think the future holds for Rose and Evie – Happiness I hope. Rose definitely has enough support.♥️
What impact does Harold have on Walter – I really liked this thread of the narrative. It showed Rose’s softer side and her thoughtfulness. I think Harold is a really good companion for Walter and will help increase his confidence and his passion for life.🧓🐈
I found ‘Cutting It Fine’ to be a well thought out, suspense filled, creative read. I am glad I gave it a second read. Thank you to Sheena for the ‘mention’.x

I really wanted to love this book, but it just fell short for me. The premise is great: Rose, a hairdresser, has a client, Em, who is found to be having an affair with Rose's husband. Cue insanity right? Right.

Unfortunately, the characters felt incredibly two dimensional and the storyline was so unbelievable that I couldn't connect with what I was reading. By the end of the book I was left with a tremendous amount of loathing for Rose and was disappointed she didn't meet her demise.

The author was trying too hard to convey Rose's unraveling and in the end I felt they missed the target. Rose's actions were stunted and illogical. The "cop" that befriends her was the final straw for me and I just wanted to finish the book and be done.

I would have loved to have seen more time taken to flesh out the characters and give me a reason to care about what happens to them. Build up to events at a slower pace and hook the reader into not wanting, but needing to know what unfolds. Most importantly, make sure that what happens mirrors reality a bit more. As a thriller, at least for me, what usually transfixes me is being able to think about what's happening and feel that shiver of "this could really happen."

There was one character that I was fond of and that was Walter, the elderly next-door neighbor. He was a delight and I honestly would love to see stories about him and his adventures.

As with many things, reading is subjective. Many people appear to love this story and you may be one of them. If so, enjoy!

Thanks to BookSirens for the advanced reader copy.

This book totally gripped me from the start, especially when Rose meets Em in a work setting doing her hair, what are the odds especially when she shows her a picture of her own husband . Never mind about what unfolds next, it showcases the hidden side of social media which i think was portrayed really well.

I was shocked in some cases as to how it develops, its not clear cut in the storyline either and shows Roses vunerabilities when trying to steer a very difficult situation.

I am totally blaming the author for my lack of sleep as once i read the first chapter i stayed up very late as i was totally hooked. Roses journey is not a straight forward road and i really do love how the author finds the positives in everything and Walter is a hero and his experience helps to keep Rose from dwelling on some of the spiral downfalls she ends up in.

There is some clear plot themes in this book and its done well, its not just a case of Olly and Em and the whole social media debacle , its so much more. The deeper Rose devles the more complex it gets , she thinks shes in control but there is clearly someone else pulling some invisible strings and even as a reader i couldnt see it , Rose did well to always trust her gut feeling. After all it helps her see the bigger picture.

Y’all. Cutting It Fine by Sheena Billett is the salon chair confessional turned full-blown thriller I didn’t know I needed. Rose is a hairdresser living the dream—loving her job, her clients, and her husband Olly (aka childhood sweetheart turned gym-going husband-of-the-year). But things go from blowout to blow-up real quick when Em, a wannabe influencer with more confidence than common sense, starts gushing about her new mystery man… who sounds suspiciously like Olly.

At first, Rose brushes it off—surely Em’s just crafting content for her followers, right? But once that seed of doubt is planted, Rose can’t stop pulling at the thread. With her hilarious and loyal bestie Poppy by her side, she dives headfirst into a twisty truth-finding mission that spirals into something way darker—and way more satisfying—than she expected.

It’s smart, sassy, and full of “OH NO SHE DIDN’T” moments. You can practically smell the hairspray and hear the salon gossip crackling through the pages. Revenge has never looked so stylish.

The main character, Rose Sugden Walker, is a hairdresser who believes her life is perfect. But a client reveals enough information during an appointment to cause her to question that belief. That leads to a drunken session of talk about how to remove “the other woman” and restore everything in her life to normal.
This domestic thriller took root in my brain early on. A major plot twist about half way through made me lose some sleep, as I wanted to reach the conclusion. I found myself holding my breath at moments.
The author raised the tension throughout, as Rose struggled to convince others of her version of reality. Her desperation was understandable. The cast included characters that were innocent, questionable, sympathetic, loathsome, and quite villainous. There was an element of police procedural. And it raised questions about the impact of social media and what someone might do to save their marriage.

Cutting it Fine is a fast-paced and gripping read that kept me hooked from the very first chapter. The story is packed with some brilliant twists that genuinely caught me off guard, and I found myself racing through to see how it would all play out.

One of the real strengths of the book is its characters—well thought out, layered, and full of detail. They feel real, flawed, and complex, which makes the story all the more engaging. I especially loved Walter and Harold—both so vividly drawn and instantly likeable, they really brought warmth and humour to the darker, more tense moments.

Sheena Billett has done a fantastic job of balancing pace, plot, and character depth. This isn’t just a thriller with surprises—it’s a story full of people you care about, which makes the stakes feel all the higher.

Highly recommended if you enjoy sharp storytelling, unexpected turns, and characters who stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

Cutting it Fine by Sheena Billett was a solid and enjoyable read! I really liked the storyline and how everything unfolded—it felt natural and believable, and I honestly couldn’t picture the story ending any other way.

The writing was well done, and I appreciated how relatable the characters were. Rose, the main character, was especially likeable. She reminded me of friends I’ve known, which made it easy to connect with her and feel invested in what she was going through. Her best friend was also someone I could totally relate to and root for. As for Rose’s husband… well, let’s just say I didn’t like him for reasons that’ll become obvious once you dive in!

There were a few moments later in the book that felt like they slowed down a bit, but overall, it was a really good read. I definitely recommend it and would read more from this author!

Thank you Sheena for allowing me the privilege of reading this ARC.

I enjoyed the story but felt it just lacked excitement and could've done with some jaw-dropping plot twists! Rose... now her downfall was all of her own doing and her character was really annoying lol! Her taste for revenge was completely unhinged and I found myself asking again and again "why don't you just confront Olly????" She was way out of her depth and ended up adopting a totally different narrative than most people would upon finding themselves in similar situations.

I had hoped the ending would be more shocking - I know what she lost at the end - and that was mostly her own doing, but thought a riveting plot twist would've been more appropriate.

Overall, a good read and there's certainly some lessons to be learnt from Rose's actions. Thank you :)

I really wanted to like this book. I thought the premise was very interesting and I was excited to see where the story would lead. This book did grab my attention early on, but unfortunately, it didn't keep it. I found the characters very one dimensional. I would have liked to see more character development to make me more invested in the outcome. There was plenty of background about how Ollie was as a child/teenager, but as an adult, all I really know is that he is attractive, and apparently a horrible husband. I normally would feel more sympathy for our main character Rose, but I don't feel I knew enough about her to feel emotionally connected, nor could I get past the fact that she didn't seem to hold her husband accountable for his role in the affair

Well, this was a rollercoaster! It starts right away with the plot BOOM "oh my god this is my guy Jay hihi look at his dimple" and yeah it was Rose's husband. You immediately sympathize with Rose and you hate Em with a passion.

But then it becomes a wild ride, from a little bit stalking ( first human reaction probably ) to a full blown Police investigation!

I must say that the more the story progressed the less I like Rose. I didn't like Ollie at all so the mess she got into it for him --> NOT WORTHY! I loved Walther, the only reasonable person around.

It was a fun read and I actually like the not so happy ending!

This was a solid three-star read for me. Quick, entertaining, and just twisty enough to keep me turning the pages, even if some parts stretched believability.

Rose seems to have it all. She’s married to her childhood sweetheart and has a busy client list at a salon. Everything changes when a casual conversation with a client leads to a shocking discovery… her husband is having an affair.

While not groundbreaking, it delivers on suspense and emotional messiness. Great for when you’re in the mood for a fast-paced domestic drama.

2/5 for me.

This book just wasn't for me. I loved the premise. I thought it had great potential but the it just let me down.

The protagonist, Rose, was just annoying... relatable sure but annoying.

It one of those plot lines where the character would rather do everything else but get help and just talk it out which could fix everything.

The twist was very twisty but it was too unhinged to be believable and that just made me realise this book is not for me. I love everything unhinged but this, just a big nope for me.

Will I recommend this? Maybe.

This was such a twisted comedy of errors. Some of it was ludacris,, and other parts quite believable. It had so many twists and turns and kept up a fast pace. I quickly fell in line with the plot. Walter was my favorite character, then Walter and Harold. Harold gave the old man purpose and a new lease on life, which made me feel good. Rose grew through a multitude of changes, much needed, by the end. A journey worth taking. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest review.

Rose is a hairdresser, married to her childhood sweetheart, Olly. One of her clients, an addicted to getting attention influencer, Em, rocks Rose's world when she shares that she is involved with a personal trainer, who Rose suspects might be Olly.
Up until here, the story intrigued me, though I did find the writing style simplistic.
Unfortunately, the interest created at the beginning of the story declined rapidly with annoying characters and unnecessarily long chapters. I received an advance copy of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily. 3 stars

This book had a lot of potential, but I just couldn’t get into it. I didn’t like any of the characters and found the plot very unbelievable. I also kept waiting for a twist with one of the side characters, assuming that it would all tie together somehow, and that made the ending disappointing.

Was it easy to get into the concept at the beginning? Yes. But you actually get through 50% of the book before anything of substance starts. That is far too long for character development.
This could have been done in so many better ways. Storyline sounded exciting but I was actually quite disappointed.

The book is slow to start. No real action until 51% in. The plot itself was good but predictable. A little bit too wordy at times and there are some very odd chapter breaks that made me go back and reread to make sure I didn’t miss the transition.
