3.5/5 - This is a bit different than what I normally read but I requested the ARC as I was intrigued by the snippets posted on the author's social media. Caged in Silver is a new adult urban fantasy which starts with a heavy focus on college slice of life with supernatural elements layering in over the course of the book, leading to a twist ending. I feel the story would've benefited from leaning into the fantasy elements but am looking forward to seeing where things go with the groundwork that's been laid in this solid debut!
The most compelling part of the book is the main character, Betts, who starts developing her own sense of identity and pulling away from the expectations placed on her by those around her. While her life might seem perfect from the outside looking in, the sorority party girl lifestyle is one Betts has only sunk into to numb herself. She's more of an old soul than anyone really sees and it's nice to see the new friends she makes encourage her to embrace her interests and abilities instead of making her fit a certain image. There's a lot about her that the reader might find relatable. While Betts has depth, other characters in the Greek life part of Bett's life feel a bit one dimensional - likely on purpose given they're in college fraternities/sororities but sometimes they come off as reality TV-like.
Her connection with the love interest, Leo, is tempered by his mysterious ways. They share a lot in common like an appreciation for nature and a love for books which helps spark an instant draw for Betts who doesn't have many people in her life who share her interests. He guides her into a world of magic that she could have never imagined, acting as a bit of a mentor in some ways, encouraging her to explore her abilities and bolstering her confidence. You find yourself really rooting for them.
This book is your thing if you like: small town vibes, slow burn, a character who feels caught between two worlds, supernatural mystery, and college drama. Overall, this book ends with an intriguing set up and I'm excited for Book Two to see where things go next!

This was a great read! Thank you Torch Lit Ink Fam and Mara for the e-ARC 💜 this was different from what I usually read and I’m glad I had the chance to read it because I felt like I connected with Betts more than I thought. I liked her character a lot as this was a YA to adulthood/coming of age book where this sets in college and she is trying to find herself & her people and friends to understand her.
I do like the dark academia vibes and paranormal elements in this book as you got tarot cards and psychics involved so it really brought out the vibes and imagination in here ✨

I stepped way out of my reading comfort zone with this one because the description really drew me in! It was an enjoyable book and I loved the witchy/paranormal elements. Sometimes I wanted to pull Betts aside and try to talk some sense into her and I really think her bff Liv is a bad influence on her and encourages her to be someone she’s not. At the same time this made the book more realistic because college students aren’t always the best at making the right choices and knowing what’s important. This book ended in a cliffhanger so I’m looking forward to the next installment!

Betts has everything she is supposed to want. An amazingly handsome boyfriend, good grades, and an almost guaranteed bid into whichever sorority she wants. But her biggest problems of rush applications and essays turn into something much larger when the mysterious Leo claims to have answers about the emotions that sometimes cripple her. Can she trust him and her new friends? And how can she balance this new reality with her previous friends and boyfriend?
I will say the beginning of this with the focus on Greek life and rush dragged on a little bit for me, BUT the set up and the answers/world building we started getting are really setting this up for a great next book! Betts is sticking up for herself by the end and following her heart. I love that she was able to make her own decisions for herself even when going with what others wanted would have been easier. I'm very interested in the new characters we met at the end and I'm excited to learn more about them! I definitely have some suspicions and am side eyeing some characters! Looking forward to book 2!

I was really looking forward to this one. It’s advertised as a Romantasy and to some extent it is. It’s very low-level spicy and our main couple aren’t together until 70% (maybe later). Our FMC can’t make a decision to save her life (literally), which I can appreciate for the story’s sake due to her age and familial obligations.
I adored Leo from the beginning. And I didn’t see it coming at the end. But then, that was it. The book ended.
It’s not really a cliffhanger, it’s just sort of over. There was no climax, we spent the majority of the story listening to our FMC complain about boys and sororities, and then complain about complaining. But then Leo saves the story because he was phenomenal and will probably lead me to read book 2. I digress.

Allow me to preface this review with saying the only other dark academia that I’ve read is Zodiac Academy. This is not that, in a good way. Thanks to TorchLit Ink for the advanced reader copy. This is my voluntary, unbiased review.
Love:
- You know something is going on with Leo the whole time, but you’re kept guessing right up to the end.
- I love the term “dusk” academia, lol. It’s a perfect description.
- Slooooooowwww burn
- Kind of genius to save a second POV to the epilogue
Don’t Love:
- It felt a bit young to me, given the maturity of the characters.
- The word “flanks” to describe a human butt or thighs (I’m not actually sure which was meant)
**All in all, I'm looking forward to the sequel!

Caged in Silver is a fast paced, romantasy that is entirely addictive. In Heath’s debut novel, she brings you into a small college town in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains and weaves a tale of magic, secrets, and discovery.
Betts and Leo’s story is easy to dive into and hard to put down. The tension, heat, and banter between these two makes for an interesting journey. Along the way, powers are discovered and secrets are unearthed that will change Bett’s life forever.
The friends that become a part of their small group are fun, mysterious, and seem to have secrets of their own. The friends from the other half of Betts’ life are your typical group of college friends that you may find more exasperating than endearing, but the story wouldn’t be the same without them.
I hope you enjoy reading Caged in Silver as much as I did while I impatiently wait for the rest of the story.

Have you ever felt a connection with a story and felt like it was written just for you!
I literally could not put this book down! It was definitely what I crave in a dark academia supernatural /fantasy!
Being its unique storyline and a mix of urban fantasy, folklore and supernatural elements. I was so obsessed with this book!
This story is full of angst and a bunch of “teenage drama” just like your favorite YA tv shows! And I definitely was eating up all the drama, love triangles, break ups, slow burn, and all the other juicy stuff! Mix it up with fantasy and supernatural elements and I truly was in heaven!
MFC Betts is trying to navigate her hectic college life. Between friends, an overbearing parent, parties , trying to choose a Sorority, a hot & popular Frat president boyfriend , and trying to be the perfect girlfriend.
Betts tries to fit in but she secretly hides her true self. Until she meets the mysterious “Leo” at a Frat party. Leo starts to show Betts her true self and they form a sweet friendship that turns into a undeniable chemistry between them.
MMC Leo is the mysterious tall, dark and handsome type. Betts is intrigued by him and starts hanging out with him and his “friends “ who have special supernatural “gifts”
She starts drifting away from her “popular clique “ friends and discovers she also has a “special gift” that she never knew she had. But with the help of Leo , Avery and Aaron , she soon discovers her true “Clair” self but is very reluctant to embrace it.
She soon learns her gift is crucial to helping Leo with a dilemma he’s facing.
But will Betts embrace her gift and “save the world “ unfortunately you don’t find out just yet because this book ends on a major cliffhanger. 😫 I need book 2 now!! 😅
And a special shout out to Leo’s friend “ Rime” he has a brief cameo in the book but he sure does make a major impact ! I hoping to see more of his character in the next book! 😍
Overall… I enjoyed everything little inch of this fantasy and I highly recommend you checking out this debut novel by Mara Heath!

I was lucky enough to receive an early copy of this book, but the opinions in this review are my own!
Despite the darker themes, this book felt like an easy, cozy read for me in the best way. Most of the characters (with a few exceptions which I'll get into later) were super easy to sympathize with and relate to. FMC Betts is a multifaceted character who struggles with finding her identity and belonging, which is something I think most college girls in their twenties can relate to (at least I did). Although she sees the toxicity in some of her college friends and questions if she wants to be a part of their lifestyle, I never got the feeling she felt like she was 'better' than them. I liked how she formed unique bonds with different kinds of people, from her best friend Liz to the group of 'gifted' people Leo connects her with.
One of the things I loved most about this book was learning about history, witchcraft and mythical lore. I love learning new things but I usually don't have the attention span to watch long videos or read long informative text, but in this book, the lore was woven into the story in a really fun and engaging way.
I thought Leo was book boyfriend material until I met Rime! He doesn't show up until towards the end of the book, but believe me, he's worth the wait. One of those side characters that instantly steals the spotlight and the reader's heart with his humor and charm. Another character I really loved was Topaz, she's mysterious and badass and I loved her instantly. The only characters I didn't like were Lara and Peyton, they got on my nerves so much that I wanted to throw the book across the room sometimes - but it's really a testament to the author's ability to write characters that evoke real emotions in the reader.
Overall, this book was a bit of a genre-blend and a bit different from my usual reads - there's some light/dark academia, captivating romance, fantasy, and a lot of lore. At the beginning of the book, I got more of a paranormal romance vibe (I spent 75% of the book thinking Leo was a ghost lol) but the fantasy aspect becomes more visible towards the end. I definitely didn't see the twist about Leo's true nature and intentions coming. I never knew what was coming next, but somehow, every twist was written in a way that made sense. I'm eagerly awaiting the next book (and I hope we'll see more of Rime hehe).

The first book in The Secrets of Brownhill Series, Caged in Silver is an excellently developed NA urban fantasy that mixes college fraternity/sorority life with psychic phenomena, a search for identity, and a slow-burn romance full of mystery that will keep you guessing.
The highlight of this book for me was definitely the characters. Betts is realistically flawed and relatable as she wrestles with who her family, friends, and boyfriend expect her to be versus who she wants to be. At the beginning, I don't think she even knows. I really appreciated the dynamic side characters. Liv had all the complications of a true best friend, and Zander wasn't a bad boyfriend so much as he was ignorant. Leo, of course, is intriguing and mysterious and sets up a very interesting reversal. With Zander, Betts knows him very well and is invested in his life down to the last detail, while he doesn't seem to know her to the same degree. With Leo, however, Betts knows almost nothing about him, while he knows things about her she doesn't even know. And both relationships come with their problems. I adored Avery.
I would definitely recommend this book to people who enjoy investing in a series with a romance-central premise. The overall plot of this first installment is very focused on Betts as she juggles two lives and tries to decide between them, as well as the two guys associated with each. The paranormal phenomena influence Betts and start her down this path of self-discovery, but the much larger implications and fantasy-level storyline are not revealed until late in the story and mostly seem to be setting up book 2. For book 1, following the supernatural life path, as opposed to her safe and familiar college plan, is the ultimate decision Betts must make in forging her own identity.
I'm so excited to see where this story goes in book 2!

I've really struggled this month and haven't been able to read. I knew I had this ARC due, so I forced myself to pick up my Kindle, and I'm so glad I did! I got lost in this world. It was the perfect read to escape reality for a while! It gripped me and pulled me right out of my slump 💕
For me, it was like if Say You Swear had a beautiful fantasy baby 😅
It had the college romance, love triangle, slow burn, angst, love & heartbreak of SYS, but with wicca, psychics, magic, and fae 😍 what a combination!
I really enjoyed the characters, even when some of them were driving me nuts!
Betts & Leo are just everything for me. I struggled at first because I felt for Zander until you started to see a different side and perspective.
I loved some of the side characters, too! Avery & Rime are two of my favourites, and I hope to see more of them in book two! 🫶🏼

I loved the psychic element, as well as the tarot, wicca & magic references. I also loved the literature quotes and references in this book. The fact that the FMC & MMC are bookworms makes them relatable.
The only negative thing for me is that it was a bit slow in places, and at times, not a lot was happening. That being said, you can feel it's building to more for the next book!
For anyone that likes small town college romance and/or romantasy, this is for you! Or if you're new to fantasy and want to dip your toe in, this would be a good book to start with 🥰

Caged in Silver is a dark academia fantasy romance that follows FMC Betts, a college sophomore, that has always struggled with what she considered empathic feelings. Having been always dismissed by those around her as "sensitive," she's surprised to find a tall, dark, and handsome guy (Leo) at a party who seems to really see her for the first time.
After their meeting, Betts and Leo strike up a friendship where he seems to know a lot about her gift than she ever thought possible. Steering away from her sorority girl image, frat boyfriend, and best friend, she starts to explore the possibility that the person she's always been isn't necessarily the person she wants to be.
As a character, I enjoyed Betts. I think college is a pivotal time in a person's life and I liked how she was able to appreciate her life, but acknowledge that there may be more out there for her than she thought. From the very beginning of the book, she was already very self-aware.
Leo, Leo, Leo. I mean how could we not love him? There was a lot of depth to his character, even without the words on the page forcing it to be. I was so intrigued by him throughout the story and until the plot twist. I wasn't necessarily surprised, but I enjoyed how it played out.
I cannot WAIT for the next one. I need it right now. Mara Heath, please hurry? Tysm.

I have to be honest; I had never read a fantasy book before (unless you count Narnia and The Lord of the Rings), so “Caged in Silver” by Mara Heath was my first in this genre. When I started reading this book, I wasn’t quite certain about its genre, so I let the story unfold, and I'm glad I did!
The story follows Betts, a young college student who questions her role and tries to figure out who she truly is. Does she belong to a world where picking the right sorority is a priority, or is she searching for something more? When she meets Leo, everything changes.
The story takes you on a journey where magic occurs. Is Betts a psychic? Where does she fit in? Will she have the courage to explore the unknown?
Without giving away the plot, this is a beautifully written book for those curious about the world of psychics, crystals, and tarot cards, and who savour a romance story with a sprinkle of magic.

I am thoroughly convinced after reading one book from Mara Heath, that she is a genius!
Caged in Silver is not what I expected at all! This is a romantasy that is wholly unique in comparison to the many books we see in the masses. Mara has taken a genre that I have come to know and turned it into something that made me second guess the patterns I have come to know. Talk about being thrown for a loop! I had a moment where I related to the main character being a student in the Appalachian area of the US. When I told Mara this was where I went to school I had to tell her it felt like her story was written just for me! Thank you for the opportunity to read this precious ARC!

📚🥰⭐️ If you like books with a witchy type vibe, this is the book for you! I am obsessed with this book. To be frank, it reminded me a lot of my college campus days…, aaahhh if I could only go back in time. 💭💭Anyhow, the characters, for me, were relatable. I loved the inclusion of tarot and crystals. The author did an awesome job infusing these elements into the story AND explaining them as well.

I love a book that has a good dark academia setting. This book definitely fulfilled that vibe. This is a UA novel that comes with all the good things you look for in a young adult novel. As with most teenagers, there is a lot of drama but the best part is that it is written in a way that you want to be there for every bit of the drama. You actually become invested in the drama.
You get that supernatural world with a really great story line. In addition to the drama there are love stories that are slowly brewing. I got that love triangle trope that I loved in Zodiac Academy but this had such an amazing spin on it.
Leo and Betts were two characters that I truly loved. The author definitely developed the characters in a way that you were invested in who each of them were individually, but you dove in head first when it came to them as friends and maybe more.
I absolutely loved the air of mystery surrounding Leo. I could see why Betts was so drawn to him.
All in all I give this book a four out of five stars. It is the first book in the series and I will definitely want to read the next one.

The last 100 pages!
Well, I certainly could not have enjoyed a better read!! Where to start??
First, if you’re thinking about diving into the Romantasy world but don’t know where to start, THIS is it. The story reads like a contemporary romance and builds the fantasy in later, when you get sucked in and can’t put the book down!
The stakes aligned more with Cozy Fantasy, which is refreshing… until the end, where the cliffhanger ends with a lot higher risks!
The setting has a historical charm, with references to older buildings and contexts, which adds in a sprinkle of that Historical Fiction feel.
The romance is as perfect as a slow burn gets with a great pay off!! Yes—there’s more than just kissing.
My honorable mention is the knowledge behind the use of witchcraft and incorporating modern day “magic”. It makes everything refreshing and believable, no far stretched connections.
And lastly, now I have the need for Animal Crackers and Pretzels 😅❤️ if you know you know!

I cannot rave enough about this book! Like all the best books, I was drawn in immediately and the author surprised and delighted me at every turn. I loved everything about it:
Vibes --> witchy, mystical, mysterious
Setting --> college tucked away in the mountains
Pacing --> leans cozy, but rachets up the tension and drama just when you need it
The MMC, Leo --> sweet, protective, hunky, bookish...with some very interesting secrets
The FMC, Betts --> English major, still figuring life out - but smart about it
This is the book you grab when you're ready to curl up in a cozy blanket on a cold rainy day. The only problem is there are 2 more books in the series and as of now they're not published yet 😭

This was a bit slower-paced than books I normally read, but I definitely enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to seeing where this story goes next. There were a few twists which I didn't see coming, and that's something I always enjoy.
At the beginning I was slightly worried it was just going to be a sorority story (mostly because I totally forgot why I signed up for this ARC 🤭) but thankfully it did turn into the fantasy novel I was hoping for.
I did appreciate the fact that the spiritual and witchcraft practices mentioned in this book are true to real life, they haven't been overly hyped up or twisted to make them sound more exciting. It made Avery my favourite character.
This book did end on a bit of a cliffhanger, and I'm left with many unresolved questions, so hopefully it won't be too long before book two is available.

This story is packed with all the drama I love: love triangles, breakups, slow burn tension, and emotional chaos. Mix that with supernatural abilities, secret powers, and a girl discovering who she really is, and I was hooked from the start.
I loved the chemistry between the characters, the found-family vibes, and the way the story built up to that absolutely brutal cliffhanger. I need book two immediately.
Also—Rime. Barely in it, but totally unforgettable. Hoping he gets more page time next round.

Holy smokes!!! What an incredible debut from Mara Heath 😍😍 I LOVED THIS SO MUCH! If you enjoy an academia setting, witchcraft, love triangle, hidden identity, and a badass female lead with hidden powers; this is the book for you.

I loved Mara's writing style. She was clear and precise with her wording. The plot was evenly paced and executed perfectly from beginning to end. I loved all of the characters. I thought the main characters were well thought out, and the side characters complemented the plot extremely well.
I really enjoyed this book, and with the cliffhanger Mara leaves us on, I'll be anxiously awaiting book 2! 😩 Can't wait!!!

As a voracious reader, I requested an advance copy from the author, and it exceeded every expectation. This isn’t your typical novel—it’s a vibrant blend of contemporary coming-of-age, dusk academia, slow-burn romantasy, and magical realism with a dash of that history arc that I love so much. It feels fresh and deeply relatable, and I wish I could be actual non-fiction friends with these characters.

I read this entire book in under 24 hours. I could not put it down!!! I hardly even highlighted anything, that's how engrossed I was! It was such a smooth, easy read. I don't find myself reading much NA fantasy or contemporary fantasy, but I enjoyed it immensely!
The characters were well-developed and the FMC's journey of self-discovering was real and relatable. Even when she was making decisions I wished she wouldn't, you always knew what she was thinking and why she was making the decisions she was. Gosh, this story was just SO well-written.
There is SO much more to this story though, and I am really looking forward to book 2! I was left with so many questions, and I'm excited to see how Betts' relationships grow with her new found family.

This was an interesting story of Betts and Leo. As a college sophomore Betts is active in Greek life because of her boyfriend Zander, president of O-Chi, and she is his loving girlfriend who is there for him for everything. Things take a turn when a student ODs at a party, and this is where her and Leo’s interactions begin. She’s introduced to new friends and new experiences.
I really enjoyed this book and the overall story, but would have liked for the ending to feel more like a cliffhanger. It felt like it just ended, but is obvious that there is still more to the story. I’m intruiged to see where Mara takes this story in book two. I really enjoyed this book and the overall story, but would have liked for the ending to feel more like a cliffhanger. It felt like it just ended, but is obvious that there is still more to the story. I’m intruiged to see where Mara takes this story in book two. What will Betts ultimately do, and will she be able to full understand who she is and be able to take back control of her life? I’m stoked to see what Book 2 has in store for us.

Caged in Silver was a fun fantasy filled read that I quite enjoyed. I’m not normally a romantasy reader but this was so easy to follow and I was enjoying myself the entire time. Betts is a strong female lead who does at times make some not so great decisions but is learning how to navigate life now that she has learned what she is. Leo was amazing in helping her guide her way through this. Even though Betts has a boyfriend I was silently rooting for them the entire time. The chemistry was all over the page and I was just dying for them to give in. The plot twist and cliffhanger kept me on my toes and wanting more. I for sure can’t want to see where book 2 will take us!

I didn’t know what to expect when I started this book, but it surprised me in the best way. The mix of college life, magic, and emotions made it so easy to fall into the story.Betts was such a relatable character, trying to figure out where she belonged, and not afraid to grow. The lore and occult elements were super interesting without being boring. Leo seemed like the perfect guy at first, until Rime showed up and stole the whole show for me. The story kept changing directions and still made sense. The ending hit hard, I wasn’t ready for it to stop, and now I’m just waiting for the next book like everyone else. Thank you so much to the author and Torch Link for giving me the opportunity to read the book in advance, I received this for free and I'm leaving an honest review.

If you know me, you know how much I love dark academia so i absolutely had to pick up this book!! And I’m glad it did not disappoint. Slowburn romance (well as slowburn as series these days are), tarot cards, witchcraft, found family and finally a love interest i did not despise (happened too many times recently 🙄) - perfect recipe for a good book. Leo was… hmmm.. will I go to creep-jail if i describe him as scrumptious? 😭 He reads books and he has secrets, like cmon, that’s me in book boyfriend form. The one thing that I didn’t like that much was how immature the characters felt at times but Imaybe I’m at that age now where I forget how immature everyone was back then lol overall, I really enjoyed this book and recommend everyone to give it a read! Can’t wait for the next book 💗
