She’s the king’s mild-mannered secretary. He’s the impulsive younger prince with something to prove. With twelve impossible tasks ahead of them, the most difficult one might just be keeping their hearts intact.
Iona Gemara is quite fond of her job. After all, there aren’t many employment opportunities that would allow her to indulge in her love of clearly marked schedules, vigorous note-taking, and historical research. Well, there are, but most wouldn’t pay for the specialized physicians she desperately needs. As the personal secretary to King Zeddicus of Helyos, she gets all of it…as well as a front-row seat to whatever trouble Prince Herrick is getting himself into.
Herrick is tired of living in his brother’s shadow, and he’s willing to do just about anything to make a name for himself. After his latest impulsive decision gone wrong, King Zeddicus offers him a chance for redemption. Seeing a chance to finally prove his greatness, Herrick jumps at the opportunity.
It’s just twelve tasks; how hard could it be? If only the boring secretary didn’t have to come along…
“A Quest for Greatness,” a retelling of The Twelve Trials of Hercules, is a standalone no-spice novella, complete with tropes like opposite attract, forced proximity, and he falls first. It is the second installment of the “Lives of Legend” series, a collection of eight retellings of Greek myths where the tragedies become happily ever afters. Each book is written by a different author so it can be enjoyed in any order. The proceeds from this series are donated to the Human Coalition to provide for mothers facing crisis pregnancies.
Sarah lives in sunny southern California with her husband, two small children, and dog Pippin. An elementary music teacher by day, when she is not writing or devouring books she spends her free time running, making music, or playing make believe.
Did I finish this book the same day it arrived in my inbox? Yes. Did I squeal numerous times? Yes. Will I be purchasing a paperback to add to my Beran collection? Also yes.
I have always been fond of Greek mythology. While it has a lot of dark and, frankly, weird parts, it's also provides valuable insight into an ancient culture that helped shape the world. So, it goes without saying that I was more than excited to learn of the Lives of Legends series, and Beran's in particular. The best part is that this series donates to a prolife cause, of which is so very important and close to my heart.
The book begins with a hilariously dry recap of the story of Hercules, who followed in his parents' footsteps of successfully never winning the Paragon of Virtue and Good Choices award. Beran creates a delightful retelling, keeping the core elements will putting a fresh, funny, heartfelt, and wholesome spin on the tumultuous and chaotic tale (because let's be honest...Hercules, as with much of Greek mythology, wouldn't rank very high in the family-friendly department). We have a wonderful set of opposites-attract main characters, a few nods to Snapdragon, another of Beran's books, and some enjoyable incorporations of not only Greek-inspired lands, but others from various cultures.
Iona is a darling, and I loved her as the heroine. I also enjoyed the chronic pain representation, as some of my family members suffer from the same. Beran gently reminds readers of some of what chronic pain warriors endure. Then we have Herrick, who is just the opposite of Iona. It was fun watching his arc come to fruition, and he was so sweet to our beloved heroine.
I am very much interested in seeing some of the secondary characters receive their own stories. Another set of secondary characters can go sit on a cactus for all I care. Or maybe they can go find the Hydra. It's cut from the same odious, nasty cloth as they are, after all.
Typical of every Beran book, A Quest for Greatness contains humor, adventure, and sweet romance that will leave you swooning. Especially since this book contains one of the sweetest, most swoony, romantic lines.
So, if you're looking for an enjoyable retelling of a popular Greek myth--one that will leave you laughing, wanting a tiger cub of your own, and needing more in this fictional world--I recommend A Quest for Greatness.
*I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
⚔️REVIEW⚔️ Behold, my new favorite novella by Sarah Beran! I have only read a couple of Hercules retellings at this point, but I can safely say that A Quest for Greatness is fantastic. The twists on the original tale and the almost medieval fairytale feel made me so very happy.
I don’t know if I’ve ever resonated so well with a FMC in a novella. Iona struggles with things I’m familiar with and it is done in a very realistic way that doesn’t make her seem weak or childish. Herrick has his own understandable struggles. He is a mix of cockiness and insecurity that makes him a strong male lead. Not to mention his insane strength. It was fun to read about him in action.
At first, I thought the romance picked up too fast but I will say it is well paced considering the number of pages. In the end, I felt like it was well suited. Honestly, I think my favorite thing about this book was Herrick’s blatant flirting and the cute banter between the two. The itinerary obsession tickled me. Iona and Herrick are the cutest and I love that they truly see each other when others don’t.
The storyline offers a fresh look on the original legend while being easily recognizable. I’m not going to lie though. We don’t get to see all of the trials in action and there are a couple that I would have loved to read about. It would have made the story slightly longer and given more time to grow attached to the two main characters. This isn’t a true complaint though. I just loved the characters enough to want more time with them. Overall, a fantastic retelling!
Thank you to Sarah Beran for an ARC of A Quest for Greatness. All opinions are my own.
As usual, Sarah Beran displays her talent for creating engaging and adventurous yet cozy retellings. This lovely retelling of the 12 works of Hercules was made even better by the few Easter eggs linking it to Snapdragon (Beran’s Thumbelina/Persephone retelling).
While this book is a standalone, I really hope to see Beran write more on Greek myths!
I LOVED THIS BOOK! Like…LOVED IT! LOVED IT! Like it has Immediately and Indefinitely become an instant story on my list of “Melinda’s Happy Books”! I WILL BE REREADING THIS BOOK!
Iona is use to being overlooked and forgotten. As the King’s Secretary it can sometimes have its benefits. But when a pompous Lord insists his son would make a better secretary than the unappealing one the King has right now—aka Iona—her life suddenly takes an unexpected turn.
And Herrick…well Herrick…he’s a prince by marriage and fairy blessed. And although the King tries to treat him as his flesh and blood Herrick can’t help but compare himself to his older step brother and see himself as not a real prince. He struggles with self worth and this often leads him to make rash and questionable decisions. One of which lands him in a bit of hot water.
But the King has eyes and ears and understands more than they do. And he has plans of his own. Plans that involve Herrick setting out on a journey to complete 12 tasks before the month ends and Iona tagging along to keep him on track and out of trouble.
Will Herrick complete his mission before time runs out?
Will Iona be able to keep him out of trouble, while also, trying to keep her heart from falling for the handsome hero?
This was absolute sweet and cozy perfection!
The relationships were just oh so perfect! Whether it be the one between the King and Herrick…or between Herrick and his sister Princess Artesia…or between the King and Iona…or between Herrick and Iona…every last one of them was sweet and beautiful and oh so heartwarming!
Then there were ALL the COZY vibes! I love a great cozy story and this one was written just **chef’s kiss**! It made my heart unbelievably happy and my soul rejoice! I couldn’t help but smile the whole story through!
I also really enjoyed the magic which was lite and subtle but so well written, the magical creatures that were awesome (give me ALL the magical creatures), and the cameo woven in!
But my very very very favorite aspect of this book was the romance! Oh.The.Romance. The romance was completely sweet and swoony and just absolutely fabulous! But as always with one of Beran’s books it was completely clean and appropriate for any reader of any age or gender. This was Top Tier Romance! And I loved every word of it!
So yep…GO READ THIS BOOk! It’s AWESOME! And WONDERFUL! And SWEET! And COZY! And the perfect lite escape and pallet cleanser for any and all readers!!!
I couldn't get enough of this book! The saddest part about novellas is they end too quickly lol, but she packed so much into this story it was amazing!
This is my first Hercules retelling and it was great, I loved every part of it! It was fast paced with lots of adventure and action, it did skip ahead but always showed at least part of everything that happened or explained what was missing so well, I never felt like I lost out on anything.
There were lots of unique lands explored, and monsters to fight. I really liked the fact that it was a Hercules retelling but in fantasy style. So a "human" world with a hidden faerie world that has started to leak over, which is where the monsters come in. The journey throughout the story was a lot of fun to read, with some moments that had my heart pounding. And I kid you not there was a moment that actually brought me to tears. That's how connected I was to this story and its characters in such a short time. It had so much depth to it from the world building to the character's and their development. I also really liked that it was dual pov so I got to read from both sides.
Herrick is the MMC, a.k.a our Hercules. He is strong from being fairly blessed. But he doesn't always use his gift in the best way and has a lot of insecurities which leads to reckless decisions and lots of trouble. But deep down he really cares for people especially the FMC🫠 He is brave and honorable, despite feeling lesser than. He grows so much, and his heart is slowly healed as he sees the truth and rids himself of the lies he's believed his whole life, one of the best parts if you ask me.
Iona is the FMC, who is stronger then they realize, great at blending in and going unseen, but has a lot to say and strong opinions. She is such a great FMC and perfect for Herrick. She has her own insecurities and own healing process, which again is so great to see. She has a quiet strength and a strong moral compass, and lives on the safe side. So suffice it to say she is what keeps Herrick in line.
They are truly a perfect, adorable, couple, and I loved every second of their journey. A fun, wild ride to be sure, that I was sad to see end, but it ended so beautifully i can't really be mad🤭
Content: No-spice/kisses only, no swearing, non descriptive wounds.
*I received this book as an arc, all thoughts and opinions are my own*
Another fantastic novella from Sarah that I absolutely loved. I surprisingly haven't read many Greek myth retellings, especially since they seem to be more prevalent in mainstream books than fairytale retellings are. But I definitely haven't read any Hercules retellings and wasn't particularly familiar with the story so I once again loved Sarah's little bit at the start giving an overview of the tale in her own words. They're always really funny and help me know which bits later on are related to the original story which I love being able to spot. (No I haven't seen the Hercules Disney film, I'm sorry guys! Although I do want to tbf.) It's also surprising because I actually love Greek mythology, but only really learnt about the main gods and not all the tales regarding children and demi-gods beyond the Percy Jackson films haha! I loved our characters Iona and Herrick and the journey they went on to complete the 12 tasks set out for him. The way the tasks mirrored the original Hercules trials while fitting with the world was really cool. The world which was the same world as Snapdragon which I wasn't expecting! It was exciting when I recognised the name King Zeddicus and went back to see where I'd read it and discovered the mention of Iona in Snapdragon and the setup I had no idea about at the time! It's only a small thing though so this could definitely be read without, but it's nice to recognise the briefly returning characters. I adored the way their romance blossomed slowly over the course of the book/trip, going from virtual strangers to friends to lovers. All the little moments were really sweet and I loved how well they worked together to get all the tasks done. Iona is the scheduling queen and Herrick obviously has crazy amounts of strength and little regard for reading itineraries. I loved their conversations so much and laughed quite a few times and smiled just as much. I'd definitely recommend this novella filled with adventure, humour and swoony moments. Even if you don't like or know Greek mythology it makes for a story of greatness even if you don't notice the parallels. I'm excited to see what Sarah writes next (and actually have a little guess knowing there may have been a setup in here like in Snapdragon)!
I'm a big fan of Greek mythology and I absolutely love Sarah Beran's writing so this book was to my imagination what chocolate is to my tastebuds - perfection! Sarah's take on Hercules was so fun and different! I loved reading about the 12 tasks (especially that last one with the stables) and seeing the relationship between Iona and Herrick develop. They both struggle with insecurities and self-doubt, but together they learn to value themselves and each other as they quest to perform the 12 challenges satisfactorily. At first Herrick drives poor Iona mad with his refusal to read her itinerary, but the more he gets to know her the more he realises what an amazing woman she truly is and he wonders how he never noticed her before. He falls first and he falls HARD but she holds him at arms length because she doesn't want to be a burden on him - she has a chronic condition that can't be cured. I loved how Herrick overlooked that and showed her that she was worthy of being loved and his quirkiness and cheeky humour were awesome! I also loved the cameo from a few of Sarah's characters from another book (also a Greek myth retelling) and apparently I use the word love too much! lol Herrick's relationship with his stepfather is at first tense because he misconstrues how the king sees him, but Iona sets him straight on that point and it is a delight to see Herrick overcome his middle-child syndrome and learn to be the hero everyone else sees him as. Oh and his relationship with his little sister was unspeakably adorable! As always, the dialogue, banter, quips and puns kept me entertained and engaged from the first page to the last and left me desperate for more Sarah books about Greek mythology cause seriously there is no better combination! P.S. The ending is the BEST! SO SO SO SO SO SO cute!!!!!!!!
– this is part of a series, but meant to be read as a stand-alone
*this is set in the same world as Snapdragon, A Wishful Hope, & The Silent Night by Sarah Beran (we only briefly meet a few characters/see some locations from those stories throughout this one)
– this is told from Iona & Herrick’s points of view
-a character deals with chronic pain
Review:
I read this in one sitting and loved it so much! I loved so many of the characters and I’m excited to find out more about some of the side characters in the other stories set in this world! (I’ve only gotten to Snapdragon so far!)
In this story, I loved getting to know Herrick both through his eyes and through Iona’s view. I loved that Iona was more aware of what people thought of Herrick (in terms of those who actually care for him) and was able to get through his self-critical thoughts. I also loved that Herrick was thoroughly aware of his falling for Iona, but was a little behind in where he was at with it for a bit. 😅😂 But once he completely fell and realized it, Herrick was totally an ‘I’ll burn the world down for her’ kind of character! I loved that Iona was battling her desire to keep her job and the differences in their social statuses when it came to her own feelings for Herrick. They were so adorable together!
Summary:
Iona loves her job as the king’s personal secretary. But when the king’s son Prince Herrick causes newfound chaos, Iona finds herself having to follow the prince to make sure he accomplishes the tasks assigned to him. Which was definitely not a part of the job she signed up for…
Prince Herrick wants to be recognized outside of his heritage for once, but most in the kingdom won’t allow him that privilege. When Herrick ends up angering yet another courtier, King Zeddicus offers Herrick a chance to redeem himself. All he has to do is accomplish the twelve tasks assigned to him before his sister’s birthday. If only he didn’t have a babysitter monitoring his every move…
Herrick is determined to stay in Helyos to prove to his stepfather that he is just as good as crown prince Percival. But after insulting one of the lords, Herrick is sent on a quest to complete twelve tasks spread across the kingdoms of the region.
But he doesn’t have to tackle them alone — the king has sent along his unassuming secretary, who, despite her love for itineraries, hides a witty personality and strength beyond measure.
Herrick might be Fairy blessed, but getting Iona to fall for him might be his greatest challenge yet.
“I would fight every monster in the world for you.”
*deep happy sigh* I’ve already read this book twice and today is its release day. (Shhh don’t question the magic.) But everything Sarah Beran writes is just perfect with characters who are REAL with real struggles and real relationships and I’ll never tire of watching them fall in love.
Herrick was a bit cocky at first and Iona a bit buttoned up, but I adored watching them blossom together as they completed the tasks. Iona was an absolute delight. Her courage in the face of her struggles was inspiring and her reasons for resisting falling in love made me teary. You will laugh, you will cry, you will want a tiger cub for a pet.
As always, I finished not wanting to leave these two behind so I hope we get to see them again in the future. You will laugh, you will cry, you will want a tiger cub for a pet.
5 Roses No swearing beyond “He swore.” Sweet kisses only. “Only one campfire.” Minor injuries, monster death. Chronic illness.
(I received this as an ARC. All opinions are my own.)
This is actually the first Hercules retelling I've ever read, and it is so fun! I loved Iona and Herrick and their fun banter. They couldn't be more different. He's a brash, reckless prince blessed with great strength yet plagued by insecurity. She's a quiet, organized secretary suffering chronic illness and also plagued by insecurity.
And there were so many other great elements to this story outside the main couple. I absolutely loved Spot (I would never have been parted with him myself) the tiger cub. It was also fun looking for easter eggs correlating to the original myth- for instance, a three-legged dog instead of a three-headed one. This book had me laughing out loud several times- especially at the end when the king revealed *spoilers*.
If you're looking for good clean fun in the form of a myth retelling, be sure to check this one out now! Oh, and P.S: the Amazon paperback comes with printed edges!!!
A Quest for Greatness is a sweet fast paced adventure. I enjoyed getting to see more of the realm while listening to the banter between the organized Iona and the playful Herrick. Zeddicus is a great and memorable side character and there are some really fun animals and magical creatures throughout. Iona and Herrick are both more strong than they know. Along the way both of them have to wrestle with questions of identity and self worth. It reminds me of Shrek the musical as there is a roadtrip quest and characters feeling hidden or unworthy with epic tasks and banter and an evil lord along the way. This book can be read on its own. It is part of a Multi Author Series of standalone retelling of Greek myths. The book also has some fun nods to other books by Sarah Beran such as A Wishful Hope. A lighthearted and sincere roadtrip like adventure to delight an afternoon.
I really enjoyed this book. i think this was a really clever Hercules retelling. I was a really big fan of the Legends of Hercules growing up,so I am always interested in different takes on the myth. I think this had Disney Hercules vibes, with Herrick being blonde and iona being a red-head.
Herrickwas an interiguing Hercules. He was insecure, despite his bravery and his strength. hIs middle child syndrome was pretty entertaining and there waas plenty of humor and banter in this story. it was enjoyalbe seeig Herrick grow and discover his worth and realize that others cared about him more than he realized.
Iona was a likable herioine. She was strong and smart.i enjoyed her banterwith herrick. I also really appreciated the chronic illness rep in this story. I could really relate to Iona and her struggls and insecureites.
Another Amazing Story by Sarah Beran, i highly recommend it.
i was gifted an ARC by the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have read and adored all of Sarah’s books (with the exception of two that she wrote before I found her), but this one might just be my new favourite. I can’t even describe how much I loved it. I started to try and then deleted what I’d typed because it didn’t do it justice.
One of my favourite quotes: “There are often multiple solutions to any problem, and the best solution is not always the first. Just because a thought comes after, does not make it any less worthwhile.”
Romance: a non descriptive kiss
Violence: some monster fights, carriage wreck. We don’t see any deaths
Conclusion: good for basically any age of person who wants to read it, including youths
I haven’t read much on the twelve trials of Hercules, but I loved seeing Prince Herrick and Iona complete these tasks! The story was filled with adventure, a sweet romance, and puns. I always love the puns. The greatest task of all was Herrick and Iona seeing each other and themselves more clearly. I loved that journey for them both. This is a quick read. I highly recommend it for fairytale fans!
It’s appropriate for all ages: no language, just a few kisses, mild violence.
Absolutely wonderful retelling of Hercules and the 12 Trials. Super clean and super sweet. I love the banter between Herrick and Iona, the endless lists, and the story as a whole! I never would have guessed this one was difficult for Sarah Beran to write (as she mentioned in the Acknowledgments). The story flowed seamlessly and had me wanting to keep reading well into the night.
Suitable for ages 12+ (although clean enough for my 10 year old)
Poor Iona has it rough! She is constantly getting overlooked and forgotten, then she loses her secretary job due to a prince named Herrick who has reckless tendencies. The plot thickens when the King sends both of them on a quest to complete 12 tasks together. I can honestly say that those quests were absolutely wild and would have quickly declined. I truly enjoyed this no spice retelling of The Twelve Trials of Hercules and how it ended with a happily ever after.
Wow! This was an amazing retelling of the Twelve Trials of Hercules! There was a clean, sweet romance added in there which had plenty of loving validation and affirmation and some personal growth for both main characters! I loved the sweet, natural way both characters grew together and supported each other through thick and thin!
Oh my goodness, this story was incredible! I can't believe how well Beran flushed it out, especially in less than 200 pages! The characters were top notch and well-developed. The world wasn't as developed with all the traveling and different names, I did struggle to keep some of it straight but I expected it from a novella. I did feel like I could picture the current scenes fairly well with her descriptions. I also loved that this novella had some high stakes but overall was a quest for characters to find themselves. Along the way, of course they fall in love, which may or may not have been someone's master plan all along. The characters were cute and complementary to each other. Honestly, I really enjoyed this story all around!
This was a fantastic retelling of the Greek myth, the twelve trails of Hercules! I haven’t read too many retellings of this myth and quickly found the plot pulling me in. I had to read how Herrick and Iona got on during their quest. Both characters were relatable with their struggle of insecurities and self doubt. I loved the bantered! Herrick was a flirt! But Iona’s snarky comebacks had me laughing. Their relationship developed perfectly as they supported each other with each tasks. The romance was sweet kisses only. I loved this one and highly recommend!
I volunteered to read an ARC copy of the book and all thoughts are my own.
Sarah Beran never disappoints. She’s already under weaves a story with humor, sweetness, and a little excitement. This retelling of the twelve trials of Hercules is no exception. It is full of adventure, banter, trials, and puns.
Iona and Herrick will weave their way into your heart. She’s full of fire and sass while he’s brave and a big flirt. Both have insecurities and fears that they work to overcome together. I loved seeing their journey and all the people they connected with along the way, including some familiar faces from prior books.
This was well paced and made a fairly quick read. Definitely worth diving into!
Read if you enjoy: 🦁 Mythology retellings 🦁 Banter 🦁 Puns 🦁 He falls first 🦁 Dual POV 🦁 Wound tending 🦁 Forced Proximity 🦁 Journeys
Spice: none, just sweet kisses Language: none Violence: some fighting/wounds, but nothing detailed
This little book was such a quick, delightful read! I sped through it in an afternoon.
Following Iona, the secretary of the king, and Prince Herrick, the king’s stepson, A Quest for Greatness watched Iona and Herrick help each other see their own worth through the eyes of those who truly care about them while also letting go of the need for approval from everyone around them.
I loved watching how all of the tasks worked to grow the characters and bring them together. Also, for those who have read Snapdragon (Beran’s spring fairytale release), yes this is set in that same world and we have some mild references—although it is obviously set after that book, there are no spoilers.
I received an ARC of this book and am so happy I could read it! Definitely recommend for those of you wanting a short, sweet, clean Greek myth retelling in the classic Beran style.
