The Pucking Date

Rate this book
Finn O’Reilly doesn’t follow rules.

But even he knows you don’t hook up with the coach’s daughter.

She was a one-night mistake he’d make a thousand times over.

He knew she’d bolt.

He just didn’t expect her to ghost him completely.

And he definitely didn’t expect her to show up again… pregnant.

Jessica Novak doesn’t lose control.

Not in the boardroom. Not on the ice. And definitely not with a grinning, cocky forward who specializes in bad decisions and worse timing.

But one night in Montreal, she let go—and let him in.

Now he’s back in her orbit.

And this time?

He’s not just playing to win.

He’s playing for keeps.

ABSOLUTELY NOT.

I haven’t felt rage like this in a long time. And over something that seems so inoffensive!! But the rating on this book is CRIMINAL and it’s AWFUL.

The MMC starts out with the most annoying written accent. Man can’t pronounce a a final g to save his flippin’ life. And then it’s just gone! Poof!! He speaks exactly like everyone else.

And that’s a problem, because when I say he speaks like everyone else, I mean EXACTLY like everyone else. Speaks and thinks and narrates in exactly the same voice, cadence, vocabulary, frame of mind… I dare you to flip to a random page and try to figure out which POV it is.

Speaking of flipping to a random page, if you, you have an ASTONISHINGLY good chance of hitting a specific day in this book, because 75% of the stupid thing is spent on one of two 5-day stretches. I think. Honestly, trying to get any sense of the passage of time in this book is near impossible. I thought we were in Park City (for something! I have no idea what it was! A summit! With business people! That’s all I know!!) but turns out we were actually right BEFORE the summit, and the. We spent the next 40% of the book in park city. It. Was. Miserable.

To give you an idea of how weird this pacing is, the book opens, they sleep together. Seven weeks pass. Then they interact a little for a day? Or two? And then it’s Ike 4 weeks later and it’s park city. And then when the book ENDS she’s just gotten her first ultrasound. AT THE END.

Everyone is so mean for no reason. The MMC’s mother is such a b*tch to his teammate about him cooking for NO reason. Everyone is Iike that! It’s very weird!!

But then we get to the big 3rd act breakup. He finds out she’s pregnant right before she decided to tell him. Mind you, she’s only known for like… a week or two? (Hard to say!) and literally JUST BEFORE this, while they’re still in park city, he goes in about how he doesn’t think he wants kids. Then he finds her prenatal vitamins and KICKS HER OUT of his hotel room. Goes as far as to put the red lace panties he stole from her in her bag, doesn’t say a word, and locks the door behind her.

And then he spends the rest of the book MAD AT HER. When HE ended things. And the author clearly thinks it’s all her fault too???? She has the FMC go on and on in her big apology about how he did “everything” to prove they were forever BEFORE THEIR FIRST DATE. What did he do? Oh, he did a (very gross, very ick) little dance for her. He sang karaoke, which he was going to do anyways? He… pointed at her after he scored a goal. Oh yes, VERY convincing.

Mind you, she’s been bringing him coffee to every meeting, then saved HIS reputation with some impressive, b*llsy endorsement negotiating, but that doesn’t mean anything to him? And is in no way indicative of her caring about him as a person? Maybe if she’d done some BODY ROLLS or sung karaoke…

The MMC is STILLbeing a jerk to her at 95%. Even when she tries to connect with him after his dad dies and he says no, when she calls him while he’s gone and he doesn’t answer or text her, she shows up. And his family is awful to her, and when she goes to find him at the boxing ring (god this book is so stupid) and pours her heart out he is STILL cruel and heartless.

I hate him. I honestly hate him.

He never apologizes for running away from her or cutting her off or not allowing her to be SCARED.

Oh, and while he’s IGNORING ALL HER CALLS? She gets the first ultrasound. Suuuure, though, he’s SUPER committed to being a dad to their baby bc he apparently brings her a salad every day. God, if that’s all it took to prove you love someone. RAISE YOUR STANDARDS, WOMEN. Personally, I prefer men who can be emotionally mature and communicate with me. I can door dash a salad.

I hate this book so much.

And after all of that, here’s my last thing: the writing in this is so generic and repetitive and formulaic that it reads flat, wooden, and fake. Fake. Artificial. Bad.

I love, love, love this author and this series. I love a good hockey romance and this is a perfect balance of hot hockey moves on and off the ice.

This story actually had hockey in it whereas some of the stories out there are just romance with the mmc being a hockey player. Not this book! Slap shots, dekes, slamming the boards, and all the other hockey goodness.

Our hockey god in this story is Finnian O’Reilly from North Carolina. All southern drawl and smirking charm that would knock the panties off every girl in a 1 mile vicinity.
He is the right winger for the New York Defenders and hockey royalty. Or would have been if not for his father blowing up all his hard work over a scandal he is trying his hardest to skate out from underneath. He knows what he wants and he is going to get it. The career and the girl. If she would just stop running long enough to see what he is offering is forever, not for right now.

Jessica Novak is the daughter of the head coach of the NY Defenders. She, like Finn, is trying to get out from under her dad’s name. She has worked hard for everything she has. She fought against the grain of a male dominated field to reach the seat of PR director. She negotiates contracts, manipulates language, rises above, always keeps her cool, knows how to play the game with the best of the best. And she delivers for the players.

One player in particular brings his A game every time he sees her and she is fighting tooth and nail to not get involved. She is so scared of trusting anyone after Chad.

Ugh of course it was a Chad who hurt her. I wanted to punch Chad right in his smug, I’m better than you because I’m rich, face.

This story kept me on the edge of my seat. I started and finished it today. I highly recommend AJ Summers, this series has been so good and I can’t wait to dive into Dimitri and Erin’s story next!.

📚 Defenders Diaries series Interconnected Standalone
🎧 Audiobook edition

🔥 Tropes
- Surprise pregnancy
- Forbidden love (coach’s daughter!)
- One-night stand → second chance
- He falls first (and hard)
- Grumpy/sunshine
- Intentional cinnamon roll hero
- Workplace romance
- Family drama with a side of hockey

Summary:
Finn O’Reilly is a hockey heartthrob with a tarnished last name thanks to his shady father (think embezzlement + memory loss). But Finn? Total sweetheart. Intentional. Loyal. Smitten from page one. Jessica Novak is the coach’s daughter, strong-willed and smart, but shackled by her parents’ expectations. She’s told to be resilient… which apparently means dating a man her dad approves of (who turns out to be a flaming POS human).

Finn and Jessica share a one-night stand that leaves him ready to commit and her ready to vanish. She ghosts him, hides a pregnancy, and spends most of the book pushing him away while he respectfully pines like a golden retriever in skates. The emotional tension is real, the spice is well-placed, and the narration? Chef’s kiss—especially Finn’s southern drawl.

Character Vibes:
💙 Finn: 10/10 would let him ruin my life. Intentional, tender, and way too good for the way he’s treated.
💔 Jessica: I wanted to root for her, but sis made it hard. Her strength is admirable, but the ghosting and secrecy? Rough.
🤢 Her dad & the approved boyfriend: No notes. Just rage.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 out of 5 stars)
Would absolutely read more in this series. Finn carried this book like a champ and I’m not mad about it.

Finn and Jessica's Story

This is the third book in the NY Defenders NHL hockey team saga. This is as enjoyable as the first two books.
Finn O'Reilly is the dynamic hockey player who has been mesmerized by Jessica Novak since she joined the Defenders staff as their head of Public Relations. Jessica is Coach Novak's daughter, and, like her sister Sophie (main character in book 1), she is off-limits.
Defenders Management have not given Finn a contract extension, so his future in NY is up on the air. He has firm offers from Dallas and his hometown Raleigh, but he loves Jessica and wants to stay in NY.
They have one night together at the beginning of the summer at an event in Montreal. Jessica panicks afterward, leaves the country, ghosting him.
Finn continues to pursue her, but she plays hard to get, even after she discovers that she is pregnant.
Their love story hits a major bump, even after Finn gets his contract in NY.
Finn's father has a major backstory that is never fully explained. What is explained is that Finn has been working to reclaim the family name to overcome his father's past transgressions.
This is a sweet love story of perseverance. The extended epilogue sets up the fourth book, with goalie Nate Russo and physical therapist Edeb Carver.
I recommend this book.

Finn just oozes southern charm, a man who has any woman he wants, but there is one who is playing hard to to get. He is also the right winger for the New York Defenders. Life is good until his father nearly blows it.
Jessica is the daughter of the head coach of the NY Defenders. She has worked hard to become the PR director. A woman who knows how work her way around any problem and makes sure the players look good.
Jessica has trust issues and that is due a nasty piece of work called Chad, slime is through and through.

When these two have to work together it is full on chemistry and angst. Humour, drama, steam and brilliant characters.

She is the coaches daughter, therefore off limits to swoony persistent Finn. He falls for her right from the start. Ignoring the coaches rule, he pursues her relentlessly. She always shoots him down until one night in Montreal she finally lets him in. That one night will change everything. Will her secret bring them closer or tear them apart completely? This was such a beautiful love story. Finn struggles to overcome the scandal his father created. Jessica is also navigating a career where old money and connections often condones poor choices. I enjoyed this story very much. I look forward to going back and reading the previous books to fill in the parts I missed. This is a wonderful addition to Summers' series but can easily be read as a standalone. Our main characters are hocky hunk Finn O'Reilly who has been captivated by Jessica Novak. coach's daughter and new head of PR and...100% off limits. But it wouldn't be a romance read without the romance! This story has great depth, and I love how smoothly it flows. Jessica plays some serious hard to get but really, who could resist the southern charm that oozes from Finn? Great narration in the audio version that brings the characters and story to life. A beautiful HEA with an epilogue that sets us up for more! I can't wait.

I think Finn and Jessica’s story is my favourite one of the Defenders series. There is nothing sexier than when a man wants you. When that man is a sexy hockey player 🔥🔥🔥🔥. Finn wants the coaches daughter and he isn’t giving up until he gets her. Jessica has been burned before and doesn’t trust Finn’s southern charming ways. And oh the charm he has. I absolutely loved the writing on this book. The banter between these two was 🔥. I couldn’t put this book down. If you like southern charm, sexy hockey players and chemistry off the charts then this book is for you.

Hockey, hockey, hockey. A dual POV with a hockey team PR director and their second line wingman. Both have grown up in the hockey universe. Both have family concerns, pressures or commitments. Both have histories that affect how they look at the world. The storyline swirls around things that have an impact the way approach life, love and the pursuit of happiness. Or the avoidance of it. The tale is about as entertaining as the edge of a precipice. As predictable as an earthquake. As good as fresh expresso. There is plenty tucked into the corners to keep the pages flying by and enough secreted away to make you sad to see it end.

The Pucking Date by A J Summers is an interconnected standalone (Defenders Diaries Series); forced proximity, he falls first, sports romance. I listened to this in 24 hours and highly recommended it.

Finn’s a professional hockey player, charming, a man on a mission for one thing Jessica attention.

Jessica a strong independent, determined woman who isn’t ready to open her heart again. And even if a Jessica was interested in Finn theres one problem, she works for the Defenders organization and her dad’s the coach.

Thanks you Booksprout & A J Summers for the copy of this book for an honest review.

4.5* - Rounded up to 5...

I was looking forward to Finn finally getting his shot at Jessica after watching him pine through the earlier books in the series. And The Pucking Date did NOT disappoint! I loved their banter, and I really enjoyed getting to know both Finn and Jessica better through their story.

Shane Martinez and Clinton Woodhams did an amazing job voicing these two characters, and really helped bring the story to life for me.

There are so many fun scenes through the book, and it felt like it was over too soon, and has a fabulous HEA. SO glad that Finn FINALLY got his girl!.

Really enjoying all the audiobooks in this Defenders Diaries hockey series - this is my third. I was already a fan of Shane Martinez's female narration. My first listen to Clinton Woodhams and somewhat liked his southern drawl.

Finn is such a charmer and all he wants is Jessica. Love that Jessica is strong, independent woman and she's guarding her heart from being burned again. The secret pregnancy adds drama and conflict between these two. The banter is on FIRE along with the chemistry and spice.

“The Pucking Date” by A.J. Summers

-A perfect hockey romance that blends on-ice action with heart and heat. I received a free copy and am voluntarily sharing my honest thoughts.
Finnian O’Reilly, a charming southern hockey star, meets his match in Jessica Novak. She’s tough, smart, and determined not to fall for his relentless pursuit.

Their chemistry is explosive, with banter, drama, and plenty of steam.

If there is ever an author that I would recommend you read her romance books, it's A J's. Holy Smokes this book has the best storyline and romance that it might just melt ice. Finn has a one-night stand with the coach's daughter Jessica but when she shows up pregnant things are about to become very interesting. I don't know how AJ does it, but this romance book is PHENOMENAL and has some high heat and intensity moments.

On Thin Ice

Finn and Jessica could not resist the pull but finding out she's the coaxh-s daughter and very off-limits was only the beginning to their love story. It was an entertaining read with strong willed fmc and stubborn mmc. The chemistry between these two was explosive and immensely captivating. I could not get enough of this in-depth, emotionally charged story.

The Pucking date is a Hockey romance Dual narrated with a third act breakup.
Clinton Woodhams does a great job narrating Finn. Finn is a smooth-talking southern charm wielding alpha male who has his sights set on Jessica the coaches daughter. This story is a great listen for anyone who loves dirty talking alpha males with a SHE'S MINE mentality.

This enjoyable storyline has drama, overprotective family, very good secondary characters who deserve their own stories, attraction, chemistry, secrets, a sleazy ex, and MCs who are damaged, likable, and engaging. I liked this entertaining and engaging book.

DNFed at 10%. The FMV was being bitchy to the MMC after SHE ghosted him for no reason except I guess as some sort of defense. I'm not here for that, I'm tired of that, it's the most obnoxious and lazy writing. I thought I'd give this author one more chance after not liking the last book, simply because it didn't have a great ending, but this solidified my author ban.

Finn won me over in the first page! A great slow burn game of cat and mouse. Finn is determined and patient while Jessie is scared and keeps running. There were times I wanted to shake Jessie. This book was aggravating, steamy, surprising and packed with drama.

The pace of the book felt weird and it felt like there wasn’t chemistry between the MCs. I read the ‘book recap’ and I’m glad I skipped this. Miscommunication is big in this book and the way the fmc handles certain things felt stupid and cold so I dnf’ed.

Could’ve given us a couple more chapters at the end there

I would give it five stars if not for the fact we didn’t get the birth and I feel like this book lacked a lot of pregnancy experiences and stuff for it being a surprise pregnancy romance.
