A blink of an eye. That was all it took for my world to end. For it to literally crumble beneath my feet. The Rift that tore through the land and opened it up to unearthly danger. After that, everything changed, and I had to change with it. Any hopes for the future I may have had, now lost and a new me forced to be reborn. Each day in this brutal new world was a fight for survival. One filled with living nightmares and all those myths and monsters I had once read about as a kid. But there was one important thing I had never learned about in school… Him. The General. The leader of them all. Now, the biggest question was… What did he want with me? That penetrating stare, those dark depths searching out my soul. That frighteningly handsome face that consumed my dreams. Those strong hands reaching out for me. Enticing me. His deep voice luring me closer and closer to the danger within. Until suddenly, I wake to find myself… The General’s Captive.

It’s the first book in the Rift series, and I’m obsessed! It’s freaking amazing—it’s like two worlds collided in one and made a baby. Trust me when I say everyone should read or listen to The General’s Captive.
It’s fun, it’s mysterious with adventure, it’s funny with happy moments, and it’s one of the best dark fantasies mixed in the modern world. I had the pleasure of experiencing this ALC copy.
There’s so many twists and turns. Just when you think you know stuff, you don’t! There’s a lot of story and character development going on—you get time to know the characters and love them along with the story.
I can’t wait for the next one! I’m hooked. The narration is phenomenal—each narrator delivered in the best possible way. Once I saw the list of narrators, alc or not I knew I was gonna listen to it. I instantly added it to my TBL 😆 Overall, I highly recommend this to all readers who are into a good audiobook and a great story of two people unexpectedly finding their way and fighting for the right thing to do.
Once again, Blue Nose did a phenomenal job with the production on this.
The authors are extremely talented—I can’t wait to read more from them!
The narrators delivered in more ways than one with this audiobook. By the time you’re done, you’re gonna be obsessed.
This is the first book that I’ve read by the amazing Stephanie Hudson & E.M.Ritchie, and it won't be the last. I'm in hook line and sinker—addicted. This is a brilliant story its well written, flows perfectly and grips you from the start. Fast paced and intriguing there is no putting it down. The collaboration of these two authors has truly penned something fantastic. Loved it. And the ending... Knew there would be more to the General, but the ending! Or not lol I must go grab the next book. I have an urgent need to know what comes next... Exactly what a book should do to us. One I would thoroughly recommend. Amazing!
I was pleasantly surprised. The story is original, intriguing and super captivating. The FMC Alex finds herself in a crazy situation when close to her the earth starts to open up and strange creatures start to emerge. From then on it is a wild ride of survival for her and all the people living in the surrounding areas of the “rift”. There is plenty of action, mystery and so much more. I will say though, that it needed a bit more world building and character depth. Overall, this is super intriguing story that will keep you on your toes until the very last page. I really hope the next book will be as good or better than this one. It ends on a cliffhanger. Enjoy!
Not at all what I expected. I definitely wouldn’t label this a “captive” book more like how to survive the apocalypse with a God hunting you. Slow start especially if you’re thinking of mf interactions that doesn’t happen till way later and definitely zero spice. Not what I expected but turned out ok
I can't wait to sink my teeth into the next two books of this series. The mystery of who & what Alex is has my brain going to all different places. And the General... who is he, what's his part in the Rift, who is he to Alex.... and the ending....wow! I need book #2 now! Lol
I enjoyed the story, but the errors are distracting. The writing in general sometimes felt too simple. Overall, it's an entertaining read and an imaginative setting.
Where the hell do I even start with this one… because WOW.
Zombieland but make it a romantic fantasy.
Let’s start with Blue Nose Audio gods. They absolutely ate. The casting was perfection. The audio ;’(as always) was clean, crisp, flawless delivery across the board. No notes. Just obsession.
Now here’s the kicker—I genuinely do not remember signing up for this ALC. Past me made a chaotic little decision and I would like to personally thank her for that feral moment of brilliance. 😌 Because the second this landed in my library, I dove in blind… and was held CAPTIVE (okay, had to get my dad joke in there lol).
Based on the title, I thought I knew what I was walking into. A historical romance maybe?
I was wrong.
Gloriously, deliciously, embarrassingly wrong.
This story pulls slams you right into the chaos, no prep work, no lube. The imagery is brutal and cinematic, like you’re standing in the ashes watching the world rot in real time. We’re talking a post-apocalyptic wasteland where a rift between realms has torn everything wide open and unleashed nightmare creatures (Myths) that do not believe in mercy.
And the government? Oh, they said “good luck, fuckers” and built a wall instead.
Not to protect people.
To contain the problem.
Shoot-to-kill orders for survivors trying to escape the infected zones.
Humanity? Questionable.
Rage levels? High.
And just when you think you’ve clocked who the enemy is—LOL. No. You don’t know a damn thing. The twists in this? Disrespectful. I was out here forming theories just to have them obliterated chapter after chapter.
Now let’s talk about the slow burn.
Because this is the kind that simmers for years. The yearning: Thick. Suffocating. Painfully addictive. You feel every almost, every hesitation, every moment that should’ve been something more. It’s the kind of romance that survives in a world actively trying to kill it—and somehow that makes it hit ten times harder.
And our Alex, our FMC?
Snarky. Hilarious. Stubborn as hell.
This woman is out here being hunted in a broken world and still has the audacity to deliver top-tier internal commentary like she’s starring in her own apocalyptic stand-up special. I adored her. Every reckless, defiant, “absolutely not backing down” second of her.
And we are gifted with side characters that are disgustingly lovable. Like, I would risk it all for at least three of them and I’m not even sorry about it.
Bottom line: if you want a story that drags you through ash and blood, feeds you slow-burn agony, blindsides you with twists, and then leaves you clawing for book two like a feral gremlin—
I received this ALC from Blue Nose Audio and I want to thank them for it. This audiobook was narrated in duet, really multicast with epic narrators voiced by Amanda Leigh Cobb, James Cassidy and Ryan Lee Dunlap.
Just when Alexandra (Alex) thought she was going to have a hot girl summer, then the earth opened up and said – well, not so fast 😊Thus throwing me into dystopian era 😊
This book follows Alexandra (Alex) our strong willed and quick-witted FMC’s life changes in the blink of an eye when a “rift” opens up and literally the gates of hell come crawling out. Some time passes, years since the rift’s open and Alex finds herself in need of help from a group of banshees while out looking for supplies – enter our swoon worthy MMC (at least one of them) Riley.
Riley helps Alex out but not before he gets injured himself. Alex can return the favor and help Riley out and both can flee with no more issues. Some time passes and Riley and Alex have become best friends – not that she didn’t want more – but it seems as though anything, but friendship is off the table.
Life is going on as they know it until they come face to face with The General, our second MMC, who they think is controlling the beasts. He seems to have some weird connection to Alex and she feels it too – and THIS is the moment that changes the course of the book.
This book has yearning that is out of this world, no pun intended 😉 It leaves off on the most surprising’s of cliffhangers. I honestly can’t wait to pick up book 2 and see what is instore for everyone. I have some ideas, but the way this book is set up, anything can happen!
If you like the following, you’ll love this book:
🔥 Dystopian/Apocalypse world 🔥 Strong FMC 🔥 Mysterious MMC & Golden Retriever MMC w/secrets 🔥 Yearning 🔥 Surprise cliffhanger
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I went into this audiobook expecting a dark fantasy, but I definitely wasn’t expecting the story to take place in our world. When I realized it was set in the U.S., with entire states affected by what everyone calls the Rift—later revealed to be a Gateway—it caught me off guard in the best way. I was expecting a fully imagined fantasy world, not something happening in places that felt real. That twist alone made the story feel more grounded, more immediate, and honestly, more intriguing. At first, it feels like a survival story. Chaos, creatures, people trying to stay alive. But the deeper you go, the more the world opens up. Mythology, different factions, hidden truths… and suddenly you realize this story is much bigger than it first appeared. One thing I absolutely loved was the banter. Even in the middle of danger and uncertainty, the dialogue felt natural and alive. The dynamic between Alex and Riley brought warmth and familiarity, while the exchanges between Alex and Aster added tension, curiosity, and just the right amount of edge. That balance of survival and personality made the characters feel real. And then… there’s the General. He’s introduced as this powerful, almost terrifying figure, but the more we see him, the more layers are revealed. Controlled, mysterious, and clearly connected to Alex in ways we’re only beginning to understand. Every scene with him carried weight, tension, and that constant feeling that something bigger was unfolding. Alex herself is a strong and compelling main character. She observes, adapts, and refuses to give up. Her notes—her “kill Bible”—was such a great detail and showed how determined she was to understand the world around her. The pacing is fast, the writing is fluid, and the story pulled me in from the very beginning. I finished it quickly because I simply didn’t want to stop listening. And that ending… wow. It completely changed the way I saw the story, the creatures, and the General. It left me surprised, curious, and already eager for the next book. The narration was excellent and truly elevated the experience. The performances added depth and emotion, making the story even more immersive. If you think this is just another dark fantasy with monsters, think again. This story has layers—and I can’t wait to dive into book two.
I went into this completely blind. Never read the authors before, never heard of the series or what it was about. I knew the narrators and that it was fantasy - and that’s it!
And as someone who is obsessed with Greek mythology - to find out that this dystopian fantasy world is all mythology linked - I was so excited.
I don’t normally like dystopian, world ending kind of vibes - but the story was so interesting. The lore, paranormal vibes and what is happening in this little bubble of apocalyptic nightmares. There was a lot of likeable characters and fun banter. And there is some interesting tension. After I finished book one, it stayed with me. The cliffhanger!! Phew!
This has a love triangle vibe to it - but I don’t know if it changes into something different in the other books. But our FMC has some admirers. I just know I’m going to be team General lol. But the other one is pretty amazing too! I’m curious how these will play out. I’ll admit - I prefer a love triangle over a why choose - but I’ll be okay either way. They’re both awesome.
The narrators were phenomenal (Amanda Leigh Cobb, James Cassidy and Ryan Lee Dunlap) The only part that made me a little off a bit was when the a narrator had to scream the words “ahhhhhh” I felt like I was being told a kids story rather than an actor performing. But I’m not sure how someone would narrate that, or if they could go off script a bit? It felt off with the suspense around the scenes. Because there is a lot of action and mythological animals coming for you!
Amanda was fantastic in the role and she played our FMC who is sassy, strong and fun perfectly. She had me glued to her story from the very beginning as the Rift happened, her adventures alone, her strong voice with the other survivors and then with the general.
Ryan played the perfect human LI who is charming, devoted, supportive and green flags all around. He really was a great add to the cast.
And James, well, he plays the general as perfect as I expected. Smouldering voice with a bit of mystery. You’re not sure if he’s going to destroy everything around you, or declare naughty things to you. He’s easily becoming one of my favourite narrators.
I will definitely continue with the audiobooks as they come out and I bought the book(s) as trophies lol. Looks like book 4 comes out soon! Can’t wait to dive back in 🥰
I’ve been looking forward to reading The General’s Captive for a while. The book description drew me in though I’m not a big fan of urban fantasy. This book changed my mind. Of course I wasn’t sure what to expect, but after the first chapter, I was fully invested. It took me an afternoon and a half to finish the book, it was that good.
I loved Alex as an FMC. She was spunky without being too foul mouthed and annoying. She did not do stupid things just to advance the plot which I was grateful for. Riley as an MMC was swoon worthy, noble and chivalrous, but WOW! The General was superb. I loved his morally gray mystery and dark deliciousness. He really kept me guessing. The mythical characters drew me in because I do love mythology, so seeing them come alive in this urban fantasy was great. They were added in seamlessly throughout the book without overwhelming the story with too many monsters of every kind thrown in.
As for the writing, it was done well. I did not spot a whole lot of grammar and spelling errors or anything that gave me pause. I’ve read some other urban fantasies, and this one was unique, and action packed. I felt if I was stuck in a post-apocalyptic type of world that this is how it would play out. I loved the real-world problems, and the romance was believable and not overdone. However, I was left with a lot of questions.
I can’t wait for book two to come out as this ended on a cliffhanger. I am totally invested in Alex and Riley’s relationship and am willing to bet the next book is just as good! I do highly recommend this as an urban fantasy, mystery with great mythical characters and tons of action that keep you reading. It’s a 5-Star read without question.
**3.5** I went into this book with high expectations based on the blurb, but it ended up falling a bit short. While marketed as a dark/captive romance, I didn't find the majority of the book to fall under that umbrella. Personally, I feel as though it read as more of an apocalyptic/fantasy YA - not necessarily in a bad way, it was just not what I was anticipating. While there is plenty of action and the book is a decent length, it felt as though I was left with more answers and like not a lot happened plot-wise.
Alexandra's character is still a bit of an enigma - we see plenty of scenes where she's fighting various mythical creatures, and she has a notebook that contains multitudes of information on them, we don't get answers as to why. Riley becomes Alex's best friend after they meet during apocalyptic circumstances, and end up aiding in each others' survival. The General is tall, dark, and scarred. Not much is learned about him or his motives in this book, which leaves things pretty open-ended for the rest of the series.
The three narrators all did a great job, and made a pretty large cast of characters all seem distinct. Amanda Leigh Cobb is a fairly new narrator to me, and I enjoyed the majority of her performance. There were a few scenes that came across as a bit one dimensional, but overall she does a great job. Ryan Lee Dunlap nails Riley's golden retriever energy, and juggles several side characters with ease. James Cassidy's deep voice is a perfect match for The General's dark demeanor.
The audiobook cast was the reason I picked up this book and I am so glad I did! I love Amanda Leigh Cobb; she is one of my favourite narrators for a bright, likeable, sarcastic heroine and was perfect for Alex. I really liked Alex as she wasn't the usual hardened dystopian FMC. Instead, Alex openly admits she got lucky several times (the Costco and the General Store face off were my favourites), didn't have a convenient apocalypse based skillset prior to the rift opening, and manages to keep her sense of humour.
I like Ryan Lee Dunlap for similar reasons; he always does a great golden retriever MMC and Riley is no exception. The banter and chemistry between Dunlap and Cobb is spot on for that friends turned lovers vibe. James Cassidy does the perfect amount of growl for the General and I was melting every time he said Alexandra so Alex holds out longer than I would have! I am so ready for book two as although there were some pretty big reveals towards the end, Alex and the General's connection has me intrigued. I'm not usually a love triangle fan and as much as I like Riley, there is definitely something about the General!
My interpretation of the star system; 3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again 4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series 5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read
It's so very disappointing when an author has such an extensive catalog and they are still making basic editorial and formatting errors. The first 50% of the book, there's a couple of grammar and spelling issues, but after the 50% the errors become troublesome and numerous. There's also an issue with odd sentence structures and wrong word choices. The author has an unhealthy relationship with italics, feeling the need to end each chapter with a sentence, separated from the rest of the paragraph and then in italics. That horror show doesn't include all of the other random sentences in italics throughout the book. The book often switches tenses and can be difficult to keep up with the timeline the authors wanted to stay within.
The plot itself was okay. It moved quickly and there was a lot of action, but not a lot happened. It didn't get interesting until the last 25%.
Let's not even talk about the NUMEROUS nicknames the FMC has, which are not creative and annoying. Little Warrior, Little Bird, babe, Little Human, little survivor, baby, Honey, little bird, Cute Girl. As with most KU authors, this author doesn't know how to format terms of endearment correctly. PSA to the author: terms of endearment are not capitalized unless their placement in a sentence warrants it. Correct: "Here, drink this princess." Not correct: "Here, drink this Princess."
3.5 The General's Captive tells the story of Alexandra and her journey as the ground splits and dark creatures start to invade. She goes out to Yellowstone National Park to visit with her Uncle when The Rift happens. Alex learns what she can about these monsters and keeps a journal to keep track of everything. She's tough, smart, and shows everyone that she can handle herself.
The General sees Alex the day The Rift happens. He let's her live, more than once, to the shock of everyone. He is drawn to her and tries to understand why. She is afraid of him, but can tell she's pulling towards him. He invades her dreams and follows her to make sure shes safe.
It took me a little bit to get into the story, but once I did, it had my attention. I loved the take on the creatures, the dark and the general. The different ways they found to beat the creatures were also creative!
Audio: The story is told in duet narration by Amanda Leigh Cobb, Ryan Lee Dunlap and James Cassidy. Amanda brought out Alex's quick, sarcastic side very well. Ryan did an awesome job with Riley's tough exterior and soft side that he has for Alex. James couldn't have been a better pick for The Generals dark, deep, demanding character.
The story ends on a cliffhanger so be prepared. I'm looking forward to seeing where the story goes with Alex, Riley and The General.

✨ thankU Stephanie Hudson, EM Ritchie, & Blue Nose Audio for this ALC & am voluntarily leaving my honest thoughts
Fantastic storytelling by this duo though some of the delivery is off. It could use so much proofreading and disappointed that the authors decided on an American setting but failed to match the way Americans speak or do the slightest bit of research linguistically. There is a reference to distance in meters by an American woman and a strange line about a woman with a shrill “California accent”. Wtf? Also a lot of the dialogue is unnatural, too formal for end of the world days, and has a strange order of words.
My other beef is with the title being misleading and inaccurate and I don’t feel it truly meets dark romance trope standards. It plays as YA for me with the slow burn and total lack of sex. Only kisses in this first book, which makes me nervous there might be a fade to black when/if things finally heat up.
All that aside, the storytelling and creativity really shine in this story. All the fantastical mythical creatures, the dynamics of the survivors, the slow unraveling of mysteries and easy resonance with the protagonist, Alexandra. The romance and slow burn makes this addictive and I’d say this book really got me out of my book slump, woo hoo! I immediately started reading the second one.
I absolutely loved this. It felt so different to anything I’ve read before.
The way the creatures were described was incredible. I could picture them so clearly, like they were right in front of me, which made everything feel so much more immersive. I really felt for the main character too, especially how open she was about most of her kills being down to pure luck. It made her feel so real.
I also loved the little glimpses into her journal. Seeing her thoughts, her journey, and how she was learning to adapt added so much depth to the story.
Her relationships with others were lovely, but honestly nothing made me smile more than her little humorous chunters to herself. Some of the things she said caught me so off guard I actually laughed out loud.
I really appreciated that the story didn’t revolve entirely around romance. There were hints with Riley and the General, but it never took over. This story felt like it was hers and what she was going through, which made it feel really special.
Also I am completely team General and I have no idea why 🤣 There is just something so alluring about him, especially after that ending.
And that ending… what a bloody ending. Absolutely brilliant.

Overall 4 star fun Story : Wow what a unique plot for a distopian romance! I got a bit confused in the first few chapters, but kept going and I am glad I did! I enjoyed the lore and mystery behind the General and "myths". And what an accurate description of the way the government handles things it doesn't understand. Alex is a smart (most of the time) strong FMC and she had me giggling often. Our MMCs Riley and the General are a mystery, and I loved the way that mystery unfolded throughout the book. I often thought to myself "that's suspicious." Throw in great side characters, suspenseful battles, and a jaw dropping Cliffy and you have a damn good time! Can't wait to get into book 2!!
Narration : The duet style narration was amazing. James Cassidy is very talented. His gravely almost bored voice brought The General to life perfectly. Ryan Lee is a new to me narrator and did not disappoint! I will be looking into his back log. Amanda's performance of Alex was stunning. I do wish her screams were a bit louder, break my ear drums girl! I wanna feel your fear in my toes!!These 3 did a great job of bringing this story to life. Such a great job I am willing to wait for the next audio to see how that cliffy goes!
The General's Captive: Dark Fantasy Romance Audio book edition written by Stephanie Hudson, E. M. Ritchie Duet Narration by Amanda Leigh Cobb, James Cassidy, and Ryan Lee Dunlap
A Dark Dystopian Fantasy Romance with majestic creatures who are as scary as they are mesmerizing.
This slow-burning romance focuses on FMC Alexandra, a young woman who goes to spend time with her uncle and explore Yellowstone Park to experience the wildlife she never saw growing up in NYC, and to see it in person before going away to college. When the ground unexpectedly explodes and a huge crevasse opens, it releases scary, dangerous creatures that invade. Later, she finds out that it's not only in Wyoming, where she was staying with her Uncle, but also in Montana, Idaho, and Utah, where the opening stretches. This event causes the government to take action, and by that, they trap all humans who live in the areas where the eruption occurred, leaving them defenseless with no outside help.
THE RIFT: Alexandra has to learn many defensive skills and keeps a journal with sketches and information on everything she learns about these creatures as she encounters them, sharing it with people she meets along the way. The General, whom she meets from day one when the rift opens, takes an interest in her and makes it known that he wants her by his side. The why is a mystery, and all she knows is that anyone who attempts to eliminate him fails miserably, and the last thing she wants to do is get caught in his snare. When he invades her dreams, however, her feelings towards him are confusing. She fears him, yet challenges him because if he wanted her dead, he would have done so the very first time they met.
What to expect from this story:
Strong Snarky FMC Strange Markings that look like Tattoos Mysterious and Impossibly Strong MMC Side MMC with a God Complex Many Scary Mythical Creatures aka Griffins, Banshees, Lycan Manticore, Minotaurs etc. Start of a Dystopian / Apocalypse Hot Villain Love Interest He invades her Dreams Making a Deal with the Devil Yearning/No Spice Surprise Cliffhanger

I can't wait for the next one to see where this story goes because it seems like there is so much more to tell. I loved the voice actors on this ALC. They did a great job.

The yearning from our funny and sweet MMC with the curve ball of attraction to our mysterious God like MMC had me invested.
🎙️This is my first experience with Amanda and Ryan and they were incredible. I loved their chemistry and performance!
🎙️James , well it’s James and he’s utter perfection in every aspect of the word.
😉Also I hope we get more mentions of our Minotaur friend ( 😏Smash)
Overall, enjoyed this book and can’t wait for book two!
The dedication of this book made me cry I knew this book was going to be special.
I went into this completely blind and I’m so glad I did this book took me by complete surprise and I enjoyed it so much.
This book stars with the word opening up and mystical creatures and coming out.
Alex is a feisty strong willed FMC and she has this personality that is loveable and made you feel so connected to her and you really identify with her so much and Amanda Leigh Cobb was so fantastic as Alex! I didn’t want to stop listening.
This was my first Ryan Lee Dunlap and I loved him as Riley he has like this hero type voice and I loved the softness that he spoke with when speaking with Alex.
I don’t think anyone else could have being voice for the general other than THE James Cassidy his growly deeply voiced demands and it’s exactly what the generals represents.
This is the first book that I’ve read by Stephanie Hudson & E.M.Ritchie, and boy it did not disappoint. This book quickly had me so addicted and intrigued, I couldn’t put it down. A post apocalyptic story but add in mythical creatures and a soon to be love triangle, what more could you ask for. I loved it. That ending that just leaves you hanging and wanting oh so much more could not have been done better! I haven’t been this excited about a book in a long time. The audio performed in multicast duet by Amanda Leigh Cobb, James Cassidy & Ryan Lee Dunlap is absolute perfection. The characters are cast perfectly and I listened to this in one sitting! Do yourself a favor and grab this is audio ASAP. You will not be disappointed.
This was actually really good!! I was not expecting to really enjoy this but it was definitely worth it! There is Greek mythology and dark lords. There is the “night in shining armor” but with blonde hair and blue eyes you get lost in. Especially when you get lost in them with strong arms around you. But then you have the darker man that captivates you at every turn, especially when the marks on you call to him. But is he truly who you think he is?
The audio for this book was absolutely incredible. The duet style of 4 amazing narrators for this was absolutely amazing. E.M. Ritchie, Amanda Leigh Cobb, Ryan Lee Dunlap, and the amazing James Cassidy! It was the first for all but James and I’m here for it. 5 star review!!
The General's Captive is book #1 in the Rift series. This is my first book by the author and I really enjoyed the creativity of the story. Set in the US, an epic disaster occurs that splits the earth releasing dark creatures. A story of survival, Alex battles daily then meets Riley, one of the MMC. When they do meet the General, there is definitely a connection between him and Alex. This does end on a cliffhanger, a surprising one, so now I'm waiting to find out what happens to everyone!
The duet multicast narration is spectacular. Amanda Leigh Cobb, Ryan Lee Dunlop, and James Cassidy bring this thrilling dark fantasy to life. 5/5 stars!
This audiobook features a stunning duet-style, multi-cast narration by Amanda Leigh Cobb, James Cassidy, and Ryan Lee Dunlap—truly immersive.
What starts as Alex’s hot girl summer quickly turns into full-blown dystopian chaos when a “rift” opens and unleashes hell on earth.
We follow Alexandra—strong-willed, sharp, and resilient—as she navigates a world forever changed. Years after the rift, she crosses paths with Riley while scavenging. He helps her (at a cost), and what follows is a slow-burn friendship filled with tension… and unspoken feelings.
Then everything shifts when they meet The General—our second MMC—who seems connected to both the creatures and Alex herself. That moment? A complete game changer. A shocking cliffhanger that has me desperate for book two.
This book is dark, intense, and emotionally charged in the best way. The tension is chef’s kiss — every scene crackles with danger, desire, and power plays that kept me glued to my screen.
The General is everything you want in a morally gray, commanding anti-hero: ruthless, controlled, and impossible to look away from. And the heroine? Strong, layered, and pushed to her limits in a way that makes her journey unforgettable. Their dynamic is obsessive, twisted, and wildly addictive.
If you love: 🔥 Dark romance 🔥 Captive / power-imbalance tropes 🔥 High tension + slow burn heat 🔥 Morally gray MMCs
As the first book in a series, it offers extensive world-building, and while the time jumps at the beginning were a bit overwhelming, they ultimately pay off if you stick with it.
While the story itself pulled me in with its dark atmosphere and high-stakes tension, the audiobook narration is what really did it for me.
The narrators did an incredible job bringing the intensity of the story to life. You could really hear the tension in the dialogue and the vulnerability in the quieter moments, which made it easy to stay completely immersed in the story.
