The connection between Broken Tusk and the Kingdom of Qavell has been severed. Khahar has ascended to the heavenly realms. The Southlands Alliance rises.

Khahar now holds a seat in the heavenly realms, shifting celestial powers away from those long-standing holds. And he left behind a gift. Theo pulls on the relationships he had forged with nearby towns to establish a new alliance dedicated to weathering the storm to the north. Juggling politics, he’ll need to push his alchemy to its limits to accomplish feats never before seen on the mortal plane.

While the gods scheme away, Theo and the members of the Southland Alliance must pool their resources and talents to build their legacy. With the skill of old friends and new allies alike, they’re poised to propel themselves into legend.

But power draws power. The Southlands Alliance will have to tread carefully to avoid gaining the attention of others.

Neither low stakes nor cozy

Also not particularly good.
In this book the author seems to have forgotten what made this series fun to read. The slow building of a town and a stranger learning how to live and thrive in a new world. This book veers far away from the initial premise.
1. Town building: There really isn't any. The author entirely skipped over the town becoming a city and went straight into nation building. This wouldn't have been so bad, but he then hopped right on in to god realm building. And not making that interesting.
2. Alchemy: Not much there. A few experiments that really don't lead anywhere. The alchemy was just backdrop and didn't add much to the story.
3. Low stakes: It's hard to claim low stakes when gods are showing up every chapter or two. Seriously, what's with all the gods? They should be in the background, not front and center.
4. The characters: Every character seemed hollow. Poor Tresk, she had to be given new 'special' abilities so we could remember that she IS important, even though she has no personality in the book. Theo? Amazingly dull. He can't decide if he's an egalitarian or an authoritarian, and he goes about it in the least entertaining way. The other characters? Their names are in the book, and sometimes they do stuff.
4. Theo's new magic: It's not really an important part of the book. Which is good because it's incredibly uninteresting. It would have been more interesting if everything he did with it was alchemy, it would have worked. If you are going to bring in something like a whole new magic have it do something entertaining.
5. New stuff: Yay, guns and trains.
6. Plot: Not much. No antagonist, no dramatic tension. This entire book could have been a single chapter entitled, And Then They Got Ready for the Next Thing.

I could go on but I won't
I was able to finish the previous books in a few days, this one took much longer. I could only read a chapter or two at a time.
If this had been the first book I would have quit around 20%. And that's about as far I'll go in the next one if it isn't significantly better. Tom out

Good Read

This was a good addition; not as wonderful as the previous ones but still a good read. The addition of a whole town underneath and new trade partners weren't really expected but added depth. Salire becoming his assistant was really unexpected since in the last book she didn't express any interest in it. But I did like the addition of his realm, Benton, and Belgar. And new information is being found out, and who knew that Fenian had a dead wife??? Im most definitely ready for book 5.

Fun

Well written litrpg/world building story. The accent is on building, growing, and preparing; there's fighting as well, only in the background. Very entertaining. I'm looking forward to the next book of the series.
