Reading Clara Dalton's list of daring pursuits, Bentley, Viscount Rutland, offers his help as her chaperone and as a friend. Acquiring tickets to a private seance was exciting, until Miss Nightshade, the medium, is murdered during the seance. Questions and comments are pointing to Clara as the murderer. She and Bentley decide to work with the help of The Order to solve the murder and find the link to the past. Becoming lovers was inevitable.

Clara Dalton, blinded in one eye has a list of desires to complete before she will retire to the country. Bentley Lord Rutland, engaged by family obligation to a lady he dislikes, helps her with her first, that of attending a séance. But when a murder occurs there and Clara is the main suspect they are both recruited to The Order to investigate. Will it be possible for both to find their own happiness.
An entertaining and well-written historical mystery romance with its cast of likeable and interesting characters. Another good addition to this enjoyable series. Does content mature content.

This is my 44th book by Adele Clee and have been reading her since 2016. I love her writing and know I'll always get a good read from her. I also love that her books have a little danger, suspense and intrigue in them. I really loved book 1 so excited for this book. I added book 2 in this series to my favorite books read list for June, 2025.
I loved this couple, Clara and Bentley. I loved their personalities. I loved their mature interactions with each other. No BS. Just conversations and respect. I loved their adventures and their adventurous natures. Such a great couple to read. Their sex was hot and so consuming of each other. So intense in a good way. I just loved reading about them. The more I read the more I loved. Overall a really, super great read. I am definitely adding this to my favorite books read list for October, 2025. This whole series has been so damn good.

“Ride in Mr Green’s air balloon,” she whispered, the thought sending a thrill shooting down her spine as she weighed the risk. “Race in a curricle. Attend a seance.”
Each task was a rebellion. A testament that a person was defined by the strength in their heart, not the hardships they endured.
She inhaled the cool night air, the taste of freedom already sweet on her lips. The only question now was: Which adventure should she tackle first?
Perhaps a night spent alone with an Egyptian sarcophagus at the British Museum, though some whispered of a cursed priestess whose spirit still wept within the gilded coffin.
As if the priestess herself had reached through time to deter her, a sudden gust of wind snatched the list from her grasp and sent it fluttering into the night. She turned to chase the paper, but it danced across the terrace to taunt her, until a figure stepped from the shadows and caught the wayward note in his hand.
It was the harlequin—the viscount—the mischief maker and a man of many masks. “I do hope you weren’t too attached to this,” he said, his tone light as he held the list just out of her reach. “It’s a case of finders keepers, I’m afraid.”
“Give me back my letter,” she said, sharper than she’d intended. “The harlequin is meant to offer light relief, not steal a lady’s private correspondence.”
The viscount brought the paper to his nose and inhaled deeply. “It smells of wildflowers in the height of summer. The scent is unique, Contessa. A scent I would know anywhere.”
Clara’s heart skipped a beat. He spoke like he knew who she was. “Then you must know my aunt,” she said, naming an imagined relative. “She often sprays her letters with a blend of lavender and rosemary.”
“No.” He shook his head. “This has the distinct smell of a woman who craves adventure. A woman who means to ignore every rule, every boundary.”

I am really happy we got Clara’s story. My heart broke for her in the previous book. To start this one, she’s resigned to eventually settle in the country, but she has a bucket list to tackle first. Lord Rutland has his work cut out for him trying to convince Clara to let him help check the items off. Safe to say there are unresolved feelings between these two.
When one of the experiences from Clara’s list lands her & Rutland in the middle of a murder investigation, Daventry orchestrates things to team them up. Honestly, I’m relieved every time he enters the scene.
The murder mystery involves lots of interesting characters & suspects. Plenty of chemistry between the duo as they investigate & learn family secrets. I like when I can’t work out who’s guilty until the end. Thanks to the author for allowing me to read an advance copy.
I can’t wait to learn more about Rothley & Miss Woolf.

Wow, what a Series Adele has given us. It is best to read the books in order. Each one gives you history into the order and characters. Clara Dalton has lived since a young girl in the county after what her brother, Dalton told people she was injured in an accident. When she comes back to town society is not kind to women who are not perfect. With her scar and being blind in one eye she is feared. She has made a list of things she wants to do and experience before she retires to the county for the rest of her life. Going to a masquerade ball is a place she should be able to enjoy herself and no one know who she is. Except her brother’s best friend, Bentley, Lord Rutland seeks her out knowing her from before. Bentley has always felt things for her since he first met her, shocked when he first saw her after the accident. But her brother would kill him if he let it be known. he has always wanted to let his feeling know. Unknown to him is how Clara has always felt the same of him too. Scared of being laughed at or worst she has hidden her feeling under friendship. Now that Bentley has offered to help her with her list, the first thing they do together ends in murder. Going to a seance by the farmed medium, Lavinia Nightshade. Others blame her due to her patch. When all seems lost, Daventry head of “The Order” offers then the chance to work together and investigate to find the killer. So many secrets and tons of twist and turns that lead then astray. Each thing on her list they do leads them to more passion and feelings for each other. His mother is unbearable for most of the story, trying to force a woman he dislikes, and is disliked by into marriage. Ah, more secrets and pain there too. With a murder to solve, finding passion and unraveling tons of secrets and the past with danger aplenty this is a very fast paced story you will not be able to put down. How will it all end? What will happen when her brother returns and finds out about them? You need to grab a copy and get started. The ending may just be the biggest surprise of all. I received and ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my somewhat long but honest opinion.

With a heady snare of emotional baggage to unpack, passion to unfurl and a murder mystery to solve, A DEVIL WEARS SILK marks another winner from Clee.....so rich in detail, immersive in connection, witty scrumptious banter and a burning desire, pent up from years of longing, really kept me glued to the page. Can love trump obligation? It was so fun finding out.
I loved Clara and Bentley together the sparks between them just flew off the page. While, the murder mystery they became embroiled in kept me guessing to the last word and my mind engaged and whirling with the possibilities of who done it.
Another compelling addition to the series from a writer who knows how to engage your emotions beautifully, create a world rich in intriguing characters you want to learn more about, while wrapping you up in a good mystery to solve. Embellished with familiar lovable friends new and old who all subtly help to bring to life a tale focused around the romance of two who so effortlessly tug at your heartstrings you can't help but become invested in them overcoming their vulnerabilities, unpicking their wants, desires and dreams, until, they get the happiness they deserve: a future with each other.
Highly recommended! Really looking forward to delving deeper into Rothley & Miss Woolf's tale next.

The story of Bentley and Clara was a good frenemies to lovers trope. I was a little weary of the scarred heroine, but this story had a different twist and was extremely pleasing. The plot had so many other things happening. There was a murder, mystery, funny, supportive friends, and witty banter. The main characters had known one another for years because he was one of her brother’s best friends from school. She had a terrible “accident” and disappeared for two years, but he never stopped thinking about her. He was promised to another woman, that he did not like, before birth by a bow his mother made. Circumstances brought Clara and Bentley together and once they were forced to help solve a crime and spend so much time together, they couldn’t deny their feelings. He fell first but didn’t want to scare her away. I loved the way his character understood her so well and the patience that he showed. Her lack of confidence just seemed so contradictory to her strong character. This steamy romance was full of well developed characters, funny parrots, lots of twists and turns to get to the bottom of the murder mystery and a HEA. I love Adele Clee novels!

September 28, 2025Miss Clara Dalton, hides behind elaborate patches to cover her scar and blind eye purportedly damaged in a riding accident. She has hidden away for some time but finally has the courage to walk in society while convinced society life isn’t for her. Bentley, Viscount Rutland, her brother’s good friend and their neighbour hasn’t seen her since her accident and is unaware of her trials. Bentley is due to announce his longstanding and arranged engagement to Miss Sarah Woodall, a blue stocking but he is not happy at all. He agrees to help Clara fulfil her bucket list of exciting things she wants to do before she retires to the country. While attending a seance, the medium is poisoned and suddenly they are trying to discover who murdered her and who is trying to frame Clara. A plot of blackmail and an historical murder entwines with the urgency to enjoy these last pleasures before the reality of life and marriage for duty’s sake must be addressed. Love it! Dancing to violins by lantern light, mysterious messages at the seance, masquerades, curses and talking parrots! A story full of intrigue and mystery that goes back to their parents generation. Great story !

I absolutely loved reading Clara and Bentley's HEA. These two characters were scarred both physically and emotionally, having carried burdens that hindered them from a life they yearned for. After they attended a seance that ends in the murder of the medium, Clara and Bentley were thrust into a murder investigation that was connected to their past. This story had a creepy and ghostly vibe that fit perfectly for the fall spooky season, and I really enjoyed following along as they worked to solve the mystery...while falling in love. Adele Clee never disappoints, and I look forward to Olivia's book next🖤

I have been waiting for Clara's book for what feels like ages, and I was so excited to read it. I can't say I always understood her motives, and she did seem to contradict herself a bit. Clara stood in her own way a lot and was rather arrogant at times, but Bentley was extremely patient and once he finally got himself together and was willing to be blunt with his mother about what he wanted, I was really satisfied. I also enjoyed seeing Clara and Bentley learn to work together to solve a mystery, especially as this was such a big development moment for Clara as she learned that other people have hurts too, beyond just the obvious physical ones she bears. As always, I cannot wait for the next story.

Clara – bold, smart, and has a bucket list. Love this for her. Bucket lists always make for an interesting and sexy story. You know what made these two so amazing, they understand each other and think about each other all of the time. Throw in a mystery, which Adele does so well, and you have a fantastic story. I had no idea who the villain was, bravo Adele, and the reason why. Adele throws in a bunch of misdirection and I am totally there for that. I don’t want mysteries too easy. Of course, our favorite leader of the Order makes an appearance along with Aaron and Joanna Chance. I say this all the time, if you haven’t read an Adele Clee book, go out, pick any one up and prepare to be delighted.

I loved the characters of Clara and Bentley. Clara was so brave, going about in society with many talking about her disability. I liked that she added feathers to her eye patch and co-ordinated it with the clothes she was wearing. Clara had loved Bentley, Viscount Rutland for some time and thought he hadn’t noticed her. However, Bentley had been promised in marriage to another woman. Of course, Bentley had noticed Clara and was very attracted to her but his engagement was due to be announced in two weeks. I loved the list that Clara had compiled to complete before she retired to the country. There is a murder mystery, it had me completely going for the wrong person! There is also passion and I loved when Bentley told certain people what was going to happen. I was cheering him on. There are some old favourites popping up from The Order and I look forward to reading their story next, This was a very engaging read, as I usually find with this author. Romance and mystery suits me very well.

Another great read from Adele Clee. Third in series and principal characters are Clara who is scarred and blind in one eye who has a list of activities she wants to complete before she retired to the country and lives as a spinster, and Bentley Viscount Rutland who is expected to announce his betrothal to someone he cannot stand ( the feeling is mutual) in two weeks time. He gets hold of Clara’s list and offers to help her fulfil the activities. However the first one involves murder and Clara becomes a suspect. Together with friends and members we have met before of The Order. They work to solve the crime. Both discover feelings they never realised they had. Well written. Great storyline. Highly recommended

This story was just AMAZING.
Clara grabbed my heart from the beginning of this series and I'm so glad that Bentley is one who saw beneath that scar and loved her regardless of what his mother said or doesn't say.. and the way he stood up for her in so many different ways.. and she stood up for him by showing him he deserves love in return despite what everyone may or may not think of him..
This book is definitely my favorite..
I can't wait to read Rothley's book..

I enjoyed this book, like I enjoy all Adele Clee books. Clara, because of an accident years ago, has a bad eye. Most of the time she does not want anyone to see it, so she wears a patch. She has decided to make a list of things she would like to do, then she will go hide in the country. Her brother’s friend Bentley has decided he will help her do things on her list because he will be getting engaged soon. The first experience they have together is séance, and this starts some of their adventures together. I enjoyed both Clara and Bentley.

Clara was scarred and blinded in a tragic incident and has struggled ever since. She has resigned herself to remaining unmarried and alone in a country house away from society. But before doing that she plans to build enough memories to sustain her for the rest of her life. Bentley, an old family friend, insists on helping her with her adventures which start with a Seance and an unexpected murder before they are diverted to investigate the murder. An action packed book with the perfect balance of mystery, action, romance and humour. Loving this series.

So Very Entertaining!
Clara Dalton is partially blinded in a tragic accident and yet she still acts with a wild streak of mischief as she and the secret love of her life, Viscount Rutland unravel a tragic murder, which happened right in front of them.
This story grabbed my attention and kept me reading right to the exciting finale.
I loved the way these two main characters behaved. They were both so focussed on whatever they did which made their story all the more exciting and very enjoyable.
I have just finished an early copy of this story and am happy to leave my voluntary review of it.

I really like the combination of mystery and intrigue with love and romance. Clara and Bentley have known each other for years but not really as a man sees a woman. He has secretly admired her for years but hasn’t realised it. When they work together to absolve Clara of the murders, they start to enjoy each other’s company. Danger threatens in at least two ways and the more clues they find, the more complicated the plot becomes.

A GREAT book! A wonderful mystery (I really didn’t see the end unfolding that way!) perfectly interwoven with a touching love story. Clara is an awesome character, bold and daring despite her injury and I loved that she found the right man who bolstered her confidence and loved her for her inner strength and beauty. Clee never disappoints with her usual blend of mystery and romance!

That Clara and Bentley would become a couple was just a question of how quickly. This was done very well, not too fast, just right, I felt. What totally surprised me was the solution to the whodunit. I did not see that coming. I liked the characters, the pacing and the ending!

Clara has resigned her self to spinsterhood due to scarring and being blind in one eye. She does have a bucket list which a friend of her brother’s is set to help her accomplish before he has to go into an arranged marriage. During their adventures a murder is committed and Clara may be a suspect. Now the real adventure begins. It was nice having some of my favorite characters from previous books put in an appearance. The murder mystery had some misdirections which made it more intriguing. It was a good read.
