Matt Knapp was just a regular guy trying to make his way through life. After preforming the wedding of his ex-wife, he just wanted to go fishing. But the universe had other ideas. Portals to other world start appearing everywhere. Despite the governments warnings he enters one. On the other side he finds an orientation center. there he is given a chance to enter a different world. There's one problem. Matt is a serious nerd. His spare time is filled with anime, Lit-RPG audiobooks, tabletop RPGs and videogames. He is sent to a world almost like Earth called Meirkus. It's a world full of humans and all the creatures and races from fantasy. In his old life he was a nerd who spent his time working or cooped up at home. But here things change. Armed with a sentient ball bat named Bitchfat Matt has a new purpose. Try and save the demi-human city of Merk Town from the forces of hell. With his girlfriend. The insane Goddess Yuska who is responsible for anime and sweaty nerds making cosplayers uncomfortable. Misty, his elf roommate with a weird secret. And a strange being only known as the assistant, who mocks Matt and explains the world around him. In a book full of humor, heart and more WTF moments than you can imagine. Matt Knapp Discount exorcist is bound to make you laugh.
If Yu Yu Hakusho and Army of Darkness somehow had a ridiculously unhinged LitRPG baby, it might look something like How NOT to Be an Exorcist in Another World.
David Knapp has created something that is, above all else, pure entertainment. This isn't a book you pick up because you're looking for serious epic fantasy or meticulously constructed lore. You pick it up because you want absurd fantasy, game mechanics, monsters, ridiculous powers, pop-culture humor, and a protagonist who approaches an entirely new world with the attitude of, “Well... let's see what happens.”
Matt is isekai'd into another world and discovers that his new life comes with an unusual combination of powers, responsibilities, and insanity. He's essentially a barbarian-priest combat exorcist, which is about as subtle as it sounds. When possessed beings and monsters need dealing with, Matt's solution tends to involve considerably more brute force than traditional exorcism probably recommends.
And then there's his sidekick: a sentient baseball bat with an absolutely filthy mouth. The bat's commentary alone had me laughing more than once.
Matt's relationship with Yuska, the completely insane goddess associated with anime, sweaty nerds, and the appreciation of certain physical attributes, adds another layer of ridiculousness to the whole adventure. The characters, abilities, monsters, and situations constantly feel like they're one step away from completely flying off the rails—and that's exactly what makes it so much fun.
The combat has that wonderfully over-the-top anime energy where the question isn't “Would a normal person do this?” but rather “How much more ridiculous can this ability possibly get?” There's a definite Yu Yu Hakusho-style supernatural battle-adventure vibe, mixed with the irreverent, badass, wisecracking energy of Ash from Army of Darkness.
Matt isn't some carefully calculating genius. He's brute force with groovy vibes.
That's the appeal.
What I especially enjoyed is that the book doesn't seem embarrassed about being ridiculous. It embraces the absurdity of LitRPG, isekai, anime, RPG mechanics, and supernatural fantasy and throws them all into a blender. The result is something that feels genuinely different from a lot of the more formulaic LitRPG I've read.
Is it polished literary fantasy? No.
Is it trying to be? Also no.
It's trying to be fun, and it succeeds.
How NOT to Be an Exorcist in Another World is the first book in the Combat Exorcist series, and I'm definitely interested in seeing where Matt's particular brand of supernatural chaos goes next.
If you're looking for serious fantasy, look elsewhere.
If you're looking for monsters, leveling, anime-style powers, an obscene talking bat, an insane goddess, fourth-wall-breaking humor, and a badass protagonist punching his way through an absurd new world...
This might be exactly what you're looking for.
Come for the LitRPG.
Stay for the talking bat.
And whatever you do, don't let Matt near the demons.
Delightfully unhinged!!!!!!!!!!! If you're in the mood for something off-beat and plain fun. Then this is the book for you. Matt is a regular guy going through a rough patch. But a cosmic twist of fate makes his wildest dreams come true. After entering a portal Matt is sent to another world. Armed with a talking baseball bat named Bitchfat. Matt begins fighting evil in a world straight out of your wildest dreams. Come along on an adventure full of insanity, pop culture references and more fourth wall breaks than you can count.
