This novel is sure to leave you on the edge of your seat wanting more, as you scratch your head at Lee’s uncanny ability to dodge sticky situations.
P.D. Atkerson is a homeschooled writer, living in Montana, who may or may not be a secret agent. She spends almost as much time in the worlds she creates as she does the real one. When she’s not reporting the stories of her agents, she’s learning different languages, or traveling to different worlds through the portals of books. She has a black belt in sarcasm and a master’s degree in useless facts.
Please excuse me. I'm still slack-jawed from reading the ending.
After reading Murphy Lawson, I ordered Ghost Hunter, ASAP. And boy am I glad. P. D. Atkerson ramps up the action right from the get-go, and you have no choice but to hang on (literally) and see this book through. Ask me how I know; I stayed up till past midnight to get to the ending-A CLIFF HANGER ENDING I MIGHT ADD!! This book tore my heart out, and had me desperately wishing I had the next book sitting right next to me. Gregory and Lee's relationship develops so well, I just loved it. All of it.
5+ stars & 6/10 hearts. Do I keep saying each Simon Lee book is better than the last? Yes. Do I mean it? Also yes.
I am not even sure how to begin this review. I received my copy around 10:40 at night , just after finishing book 3, and devoured it. I guess we’ll go with bullet points/dashes like we did last time!
- So, plot. MAN. I mean, I thought the other Simon Lee books were intense but THIS one blew them out of the water! Whew! I’m still not over it yet. I mean, I was sure Lee and Winfield HAD to survive but… I was just freaking out. ;P And all those twists I didn’t see coming….!!! Like, wow! I’m still breathless. XD Hence the incoherent raving. (Also, that cliffhanger is terrible, just saying…)
- Characters. MY HEART, Y’ALL. They just get better and better!!!! Lee is amazing in this book. He’s really good as a leader, actually! And I loooooved his relationship with his father. It was so good and so much healthier. <33 (*while* keeping up the amazing humour XD). Also I loved his arc!!!! And all the unexpected feelings that cropped up! Ahh!! This kid NEEDS a happy ending. <33 And Winfield…!!! He also just gets better and better!! Wow! Seeing him face his demons like that was AWESOME. His arc was so good, too. AND THE ENDING, GUYS!!!! Jackal and Digit were pretty awesome… *cries* And Ava ended up much higher up on my list after this! But I never liked Izzy. And the villains in this book are even WORSE than than in Murphy Lawson. Like, they’re really AWFUL. Can they PLEASE be neutralized soon? Because I’m getting worried for my babies here. *sweeps Lee and Winfield away to safety* For real though… I was worried!!!
Also, the sarcasm. XD
So, yeah. That’s the best of a coherent review I can give right now. XD
Content: Some euphemisms & violence.
A Favourite Quote: “‘Hey,’ Winfield said, tapping him with his elbow. ‘No matter what madness ensues, no matter how crazy things get, God’s in control and nothing takes him by surprise.’” A Favourite Humorous Quote: “‘So how do you suggest we get inside?’ … “‘There’s a door over there, unless you know how to magically walk through a wall?’ Lee asked. “‘Good idea,’ Winfield said, stepping toward the door and kicking it open. “‘You know, I would have just opened it,’ Jackal said as the two of them moved in behind Winfield. …. ‘This door’s locked,’ Lee said[.] ‘Which reminds me, why weren’t the other doors locked? You would think even criminals would know the safety of locking your front door. You never know who might wander in.’ “‘Maybe they did,’ Jackal said[.] ‘Winfield didn’t check before breaking it down.’”
*I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for my honest review. A positive review was not required. These are my honest thoughts & opinions.*
This was the most up-and-down harrowing adventure book of the series yet. Lee is after someone again, and this time it's even more personal... So many new connections and twists were revealed in this book! That "thirty thousand feet in the air" part proves quite innovative and breathtaking . . . literally. I was on the edge of my seat. And the cliffhanger at the end: WOW! That's an . . . exciting place to end the story . . . Really, this book is only one part of an arc that spans the series.
I've enjoyed seeing character growth in Lee. Watching him react to various shocking circumstances is entertaining. I didn't want to stop this story to sleep!
This book was an amazing read. It was very well written and I enjoyed it tremendously. The way that P.D. Atkerson writes about Lee is amazing. I highly recommend this series if you are looking for adventure, suspense and edge of your seat excitement!
This was my second time reading this. I read it to my siblings, and I still found myself on the edge of my seat. Lee is as Kick-butt awesome as ever!!
I love the Simon Lee series, and this installment only adds to the enjoyment as we plunge deeper into the twisted legacy Simon Lee finds trying to swoop him in- and steal his father back. Once again, the best part of the story is the special relationship between the boy genius and the man with the past as they try to push through all their secrets to stay honest with each other.
The bad guy in this book is the worst one yet, I think. He makes the perfect antithesis of Simon Lee because of the similarities he shares with the hero. But they made very different decisions on how to use their special gifts, and that decision is what defines the line between them.
This is one of those series that you don't want to end, and I look forward to the next installment- and so should you.
I received a copy of this book from the author, but the views and opinions are my own.
This had a much more serious feel than the previous books did. The first half or so was just like the others, but round about the middle something changed and it suddenly felt... really intense. The suspense in this one is even greater than the others, and that's saying a lot! The plane scene, especially, had me literally sitting on the edge of my seat. That part was probably my favourite in the whole book... It was so well done and might have been the most suspenseful part in the whole series. I loved it! But the villains in this one were really awful, and because the whole thing has become personal to Lee and Winfield, it makes the book very intense and serious. For this reason, I didn't enjoy this one quite as much as the others, especially the last few chapters where things just keep getting worse and worse and worse for these poor characters. Jackal and Digit... I was not expecting that, and I wasn't prepared for it to happen. I still can't quite believe it... It was so sudden! You just feel so sorry for Lee... And his dad, too, for different reasons. There is one major twist in this one, which, just as you start to think you know what's going on, throws you completely! Well, actually there are several twists... But that one particularly took me by surprise.
In a way, this is the turning point of the series, and from here on it's never quite the same again. The epilogue of this one, while maybe not the very worst, is definitely one of them. By now, all you want is for these awful people to be taken down. But before that can happen, there's a lot more in store...
Note: I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Recommended Reading Order for the Simon Lee Universe books (SLU): Note: This is the order I've put together after reading and rereading almost all of these books, sometimes at once. While there are different opinions on which series should be read first, this is the order I personally feel is best for a first-time reader. It is NOT the chronological order - and I strongly recommend that a first-time reader does NOT read these books in chronological order. That's great for rereads, but the most will be got out of the SLU books by reading them loosely in the following order Phantom Thief Nicholas Bishop Gregory's Epilogue (blog short) Christmas Hostage Guardian Eagle Murphy Lawson Ghost Hunter Most Wanted Winnie Winfield Not Enough Rebel Mind Talking Turkey (blog short) Killian Young Domestic Conflict (Seize the Fight) They Call Her Ella Deadlock First Christmas (blog short) Exploit Choices License Training Guilt My Name is Anastasia Night Crier (blog short) Only For a Moment (blog short) Christmas Bear (blog short) Everything Sick Leave (blog short) Water Boy (blog short) Школьник (blog short) Bank Robber (Classified Files) Blinded (blog short) Room Escapee (Classified Files) Dare (blog short) Wrong Number (blog short) Minor Detail Unwanted Services Off the Rails Smoke Screen Lost Time Web of Lies
Ok. I don’t even know how I’m supposed to write a review on this, but here goes… This one was my favorite in the series so far (I am reading them in order). I love the growth of Lee and his dad’s relationship, and the peril that happens in this book kept me very much on the edge of my seat. I was half-tempted to just keep reading into the next book because I could. not. stop. reading it. I loved Lee’s development in this book. He had to broaden his abilities and go past more obstacles to help people. He had deep personal struggles he had to get past in this one. I could relate to him more because of those. Overall, I loved this book and loved the plot. I didn’t think it was possible for me to cry over a Simon Lee book, but I did. Multiple times XD
A couple things to note - As with the rest of the series, there is the use of replacement words several times (I can’t remember the amount of times they used them). But depending on your standards on words, just keep that in mind. - The sarcasm in this book was not as crazy as the other books. There was a lot of sarcasm, but it was directed towards the bad guys, so I appreciated it more.
I really loved this book. (Definitely my favorite so far). I have now learned to expect nothing with this series and just buckle up for the ride.
*Thanks to the author for sending me this book in return for an honest review.
Are you kidding me?? Are you kidding me?!? You had to end it like that??? *takes a deep breath to calm myself* I’m not mad at anyone… 😜 he’s shot! He’s shot!!! Pleaseee! These guys drive me crazy!!
**thanks for giving it to me, PD!

Wow, this book was absolutely amazing!! My favorite of the series so far. It definitely didn't make me cry or anything.😉😭 The ending was the best and most cry worthy part of the entire book! Winfield and Lee's relationship as always is the best thing ever. ❤💔
The bad guys are sooooo BAD in this book! I am slightly scared for the future. I'm just waiting for Killian to come back.
