A Masquerade with the Devil

Rate this book
He ruined her once with a whisper. Now she’ll ruin them both with a lie.

Lady Clara Mapleton believes in love—the kind worth waiting for, not the kind brokered in drawing rooms or secured by titles. It certainly doesn't include Crispin Hallworth, Earl of Oakford, a man so steeped in scandal he’s earned the name Devil of Oakford.

But when a masked kiss at a lavish masquerade threatens to destroy her reputation, Clara does the unthinkable to protect she claims they are engaged.

Crispin is stunned. Clara is the one woman he’s never managed to charm or forget. A fake betrothal might serve them both... if they can resist the temptation simmering behind their practiced roles long enough to find a way out.

With every stolen glance and every staged touch, hatred gives way to something far more dangerous—desire.

Because falling for the devil was never part of the plan. Neither was surrender.

Reputation double standards....

Debutante's first season ruined by an off handed remark. She is ruined and must withstand the censure of the ton going forward. The man who made the off handed remark continues on with no change in his standing or consequence. The fact the remark was totally untrue never entered the conversations of the ton. He never apologized or tried to set it to rights.

I instantly felt a kinship with Lady Clara and had an instant deep dislike of Crispin, Lord Oakford. His cavalier attitude toward Lady Clara and her position in society rubbed me the wrong way. His continued cavalier attitude made it hard to see what she saw in him. The fact that he had thought to reveal something to her and then didn't added another layer yo my dislike and distrust. That Cara's friends didn't step in on her behalf or even the husband of one of her friends, made me sadder for Clara.

There was lots of personal reflection on both sides and while it might have wrung true from Clara's point of view it only seemed superficial from Crispin. I did try to like him, I did. However, there were just too many missed opportunities for him to TRULY come clean with Clara and ACTUALLY show a change in his character and true remorse for his earlier actions.

The friends were nice enough, but didn't give Clara any truly sound advice on which to base a change in her opinion of Crispin. At no point did they confront him and demand he step up, if only in private and try to make amends. If they were my friends I would want to know they had my back. If they felt uncomfortable doing something like that, Eden Langley, Marchioness Blackstone, could have asked her husband to approach Crispin. But ..........nothing. A sad comment on her tribe.

Don't even get me started on her anonymous note.....sharing bit with him and no resolution from either of them?? In my opinion, if he truly had changed he would have made it known publicly that he was aware of the note and would not tolerate ANY further incidents and that it needed to stop. All they did was discuss it like they would a change in menu. A lost opportunity for Crispin to step up and show some kind of Alpha behavior.

I have enjoyed other books by Ms. Mariels, this one was just not my cup of tea.

Tropes: enemies to lovers; fake engagement
Steam level: 2-3
Part of a series, and probably best if book 1 read first.

3.5 stars bumped up to 4. For a book that's dialed up to "max animosity" for the first quarter or so (at least on MFC Clara's part) this ends up being a surprisingly thoughtful, romantic read. Clara has hated MMC Crispin for years based on a rumor that he carelessly spread about her during her first Season. Suddenly she finds herself entangled in a fake engagement to him, and has to figure out how she can possibly survive a second scandal--plus a growing attraction to the man she never wanted to see again.

The writing is quite good, even poetic (at times it can be a bit purple, but that didn't really bother me). The first half hooks you in simply because, while Crispin isn't exactly a likable guy, he's an interesting loose canon and his chemistry with Clara is compelling. The second half becomes more heartfelt and emotional as both characters undergo drastic changes in how they see themselves and each other. While this book contains steam, it's not overdone, and actually seems secondary to the emotional bond the MC's form.

A few things did nag at me. Occasionally there are repetitive phrases and ruminations that cause the pacing to slow. Also, based on Crispin's reputation, I was confused by the easy acceptance of the engagement by Clara's mom and friends. I wish there had been a prologue to establish earlier on what Clara's first meeting with Crispin was like and more context for the apparently off-hand comment he made. I did not read the first book, so my initial impression of him and what happened didn't quite gel with what is described later. Finally, who wrote the letter of warning to Clara? She makes a guess, but it's never brought up again.

By the end, though, this book did end up checking off the boxes for an emotionally satisfying HR for me, with Clara and Crispin's HEA feeling genuine. I would recommend if you're a fan of enemies to lovers and looking for a fast read with some sharp banter and angst, as well as heartfelt scenes and steam.

Thanks to the author and Booksprout for this opportunity.

✨ “He ruined her once with a whisper. Now she'll ruin them both with a lie.”  When I saw this description, I knew I had to read this one!!

A Masquerade With the Devil -by Amanda Mariel

Amanda Mariel has become of one my favorite historical romance authors. Her writing is phenomenal, so detailed that I feel like I am part of the story. I want to be lost in her world. And I wish I never had to put the story down. Thank goodness she has more!

In this story we meet Lady Clara Mapleton. She is everything I love in a historical heroine—fiercely principled, independent, emotionally complex, and unwilling to settle for anything less than true love. When a single masked kiss threatens to unravel her world, she makes a bold, impulsive choice that sets the stage for one of the most delicious fake engagements I’ve read in ages. She lies about being engaged to the Earl of Oakford. She wants revenge on him for rumors that ruined her season, and her, years ago.

Enter Crispin Hallworth, the scandalous Earl of Oakford, whose reputation precedes him like thunder before a storm. Their chemistry crackles from the moment they’re forced into a charade neither of them truly wants—but both desperately need. Every stolen glance, every staged touch, every moment of simmering tension builds toward something far more dangerous than either expected: desire.

This story is a slow-burn dance between pride and vulnerability, with just the right mix of wit, longing, and emotional depth. I adored watching Clara and Crispin unravel each other’s defenses, discovering that sometimes the most reckless lies lead to the most honest truths.

If you love:

💘 Enemies-to-lovers tension
🎭 Masquerade balls and scandalous secrets
💍 Fake engagements with real feelings
🔥 Swoon-worthy redemption arcs

…then this one’s for you.

📚 Add it to your shelf, and prepare to fall for the devil yourself.Enjoy the adventure.

📖A huge thank you to this amazing author, to the publishers and Booksprout for allowing me to enjoy this DRC. I can’t wait to grab it for my home collection.

Fake Engagement By Scandal

I really enjoyed the new installment of the series. Like the first part, the plot is very well written and in the author's typical romantic writing style, which I find somehow soothing, and brims with beautiful descriptions, tangible emotions and mild steam. There are enemies to lovers, masquerade, fake engagement and reformed rake tropes and you also meet the characters from the previous book again. I found the two protagonists very likeable and I really enjoyed the pentup tension, the chemistry, the verbal sparring and the battles of wills between them.

Lady Clara Mapleton, who has been living inconspicuously on the fringes of society since a scandal in her debut year, is asked to dance by a man at a masked ball and kissed in front of everyone. She is horrified to discover that the stranger behind the mask is none other than Crispin Hallworth, Earl of Oakford, also known as the "Devil of Oakford", whose falsely spread rumors were the cause of her social ruin and whom she has hated ever since. To save the situation, she announces her engagement to him.
Crispin takes little seriously and is used to the rumors surrounding him, but in order to save Clara's reputation and to satisfy his mother, who is pressuring him to finally get married, he is willing to play along with the farce, which he sees as another amusement and game.
But the more time the two are forced to spend together, the more the boundaries between pretense and reality become blurred. Clara, however, finds it difficult to trust Crispin and open her heart...

If you enjoy a slow-burn historical romance with emotional depth, great imagery, battles of wills and endearing characters, this book is for you.

Crispin and Clara

“A Masquerade with the Devil” is book two in the series Courting Ruin by Regency romance master Amanda Mariel. I truly enjoyed this enemies to lovers Regency story. Of course Clara is still angry over the spoken words of society’s rouge dubbed the Devil, Crispin, words that ruined her reputation and lost the respect of the ton. Understandably, Clara built a near impenetrable wall around herself. And then, during a masquerade ball, on the dance floor, Crispin kissed her, changing the course of both of their lives. I certainly liked Clara, she was sensitive yet strong, smart, fiery, and careful. She had to guard her heart from further pain and scandal. But these enemies had to fake an engagement to avoid further scandal which drew them together giving them a chance to get to know one another, not the surface but the levels underneath. I liked the back and forth banter and the serious heartfelt conversations between Crispin and Clara. I even liked Crispin, a rake with a mask for every occasion. Clara changed him, as he changed Clara. This is a slow burn romance with passionate kisses that reinforced the connection and desire between the two main characters. Forgiveness and transformation came naturally in the story as it flowed comfortably on the pages. Overall, this story is very well written, heavy on romance, kisses, conversation, and reflection. A satisfying happy ever after tops it all off. Well done and definitely recommended for lovers of the genre.

Lady Clara Mapleton was ruined during her first season by a false whisper. She has vowed not to forgive the person who started the rumor Crispin Hallworth.

Crispin Hallworth, Earl of Oakford is known as the Devil of Oakford. He doesn’t remember ruining Clara during her first season by spreading the false rumor.

During a masquerade party, Crispin ask Clara for a dance. She doesn’t realize who he is until he kisses her during the dance in front of the ton. In order to avoid a scandal she announces they are engaged. Crispin is so impressed by her announcement that he goes along with it. Will they decide that this is just a game or will they choose each other in the end?

I love Amanda Mariel’s books and this one definitely did not did disappoint!! This book was very entertaining, down right delightful and full of romance. I instantly liked both Clara and Crispin and felt they were perfect together. I enjoyed reading how their story started out as a game that neither one wanted to lose. Then along the way they both started having feelings for each other. I absolutely loved it and highly recommend this book!!

Ah, another rake finds love and contentment. A slightly drunk Crispin Hallworth, the Earl of Oakford, inadvertantly ruined Lady Clara Mapleton’s reputation during her first season. He was a rogue with a ‘devil may care’ reputation. In fact, his moniker was the Devil of Oakford. Several seasons later, when a masked gentleman asked Clara to dance at a masquerade ball, she felt a lovely connection, until he kissed her right there on the dance floor. To save herself from ruin, she declared that they were engaged and now she tied her fate to a man she claimed to hate. They agreed to a pretend betrothal, but by the time its validity was challenged and rumors flew, neither of them was so sure that they didn’t actually want it to be real. This is a story filled with witty banter, emotional discovery, releasing of barriers and romantic interludes. Friends and brotherly support play a big role, as does the impetus of a previous suitor. I found this to be a delightful journey from distrust to love, with wonderful characters and lots of sweet moments.

Lady Clara Mapleton’s reputation was ruined 4 years ago by the careless comment by Crispin Hallworth, the Earl of Oakford, despite there being no truth in the suspicion he raised. Clara had met him thinking he saw the woman she was, and wished to widen their relationship. Not only was her reputation crushed, so was her heart.
Now, years later, during a dance at a masquerade, Crispin suddenly passionately kissed her in front of everyone, once again raising the spectre of a ruined reputation. When the kiss ends, Clara shockingly announces to the onlookers that they have become engaged! Now what!?!!!
From this point onward, Lady Clara and Crispin Hallworth are engaged in a drama on 2 levels: one for the ton, and another with each other, exploring what might be possible between them.
I enjoyed this play on both levels, and how Clara and Crispin’s interactions move from slightly snarky to gently testing the waters for true affection. This time they both find their HEA. There are no open door intimate scenes, making this a book all can enjoy.

I really enjoyed A Masquerade with the Devil. Mariel’s flowery, descriptive prose drew me in straight away, and her grasp of character and emotion kept me turning the pages.

Lady Clara is a wonderfully strong heroine: careful with her heart after a past scandal, yet still yearning for connection. Her growth felt deeply human, that balance between guarding yourself and daring to trust again. It’s a theme that feels timeless and quietly modern at the same time.

Crispin, the so-called “Devil of Oakford,” is equally compelling. His actions make perfect sense in light of his history, and his chemistry with Clara is fantastic. It's full of warmth, wit, and longing.

The “scandalous rake meets virtuous lady, fake engagement becomes real love” trope is one of my favourites, and Mariel handles it flawlessly. Her turns of phrase are so beautiful I found myself highlighting whole paragraphs.

If you love historical romance that blends elegance, emotion, and satisfying character arcs, this one’s a treat.

I received an advance reader copy, but all thoughts are my own.

A Masquerade with the Devil is a regency enemies to lovers novella about two people who find themselves caught up in a careless mistake that will affect their lives. Four seasons ago, Crispin Hallworth, the Earl of Oakford spead a lie about Lady Clara Mapleton during her first season, which ruined her reputation. Now, she was invited to dance by a masked man in a ball who kissed her in front of the entire ton. And this man is no other than Crispin Hallwoth himself. In a moment of panic, she tells everyone that they are engaged. Now they have to deal with the consequences. I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Clara and Crispin. At first, Clara really hates and resents him for ruining her reputation, but also for her attraction to him. But as their fake engagement continues, they get to know each other and eventually fall in love.

I found the story enjoyable and engaging and the changes Clara and Crispin were going through were delightful to read.

During her first season he spread a rumor, a lie, that ruined her reputation. Now the arrogant earl is back. When the masked stranger kissed her at a masquerade, and she realizes it him, she decides to save herself and get a bit of revenge. Lady Clara Mapleton boldly declares that she and the Earl of Oakford, aka the Devil of Oakford are engaged. The Mamas are ecstatic, and the Ton is flabbergasted. Crispin is amused, and Clara is furious (even though it was her rather rash idea). This is an absolutely delightful enemies-to-lovers romance. As their ruse goes on, there seems to be a connection between them, but it lacks one important element – trust. Will Clara and Crispin find true love, cause each other bodily harm, or find a way out of their betrothal? A witty and entertaining story with a quite enjoyable cast of characters.

We have Lady Clara Mapleton who believes in love but because of a lie and rumor her reputation hangs by a thread!
We also have Crispin Hallworth, Earl of Oakford who started said tumor! Clara loathes Crispin for the stain or her reputation and Crispin is hard to figure out at first!
Crispin has been labeled the Devil of Oakford and he has just made sure that Clara’s reputation is forever shattered!
Clara thinks fast and announce their engagement which is celebrated with huge skepticism!
But these two have more in common than not! But if they don’t kill each other they might have a love worth having!
Crispin is not the scoundrel the Ton believes but can he convince Clara that for her he is a better man!? Bravo well done!.

A Masquerade with the Devil by Mariel Amanda draws you into the fiery clash between Lady Clara Mapleton and Crispin Hallwoeth, Earl of Oakford. After a scandalous whisper tarnishes Clara’s reputation, a chance encounter at a masquerade leads her to boldly claim they are betrothed to protect herself. What begins as a witty, defensive game quickly deepens as both discover unexpected truths beneath their banter.

I loved watching their journey unfold—from reluctant enemies forced to cooperate, to lovers who can’t imagine life apart. The blend of tension, humor, and heartfelt emotion makes this a standout historical romance.

Highly recommended for readers who adore spirited characters and slow-burning passion.

Achingly Good!
Storywise, this author knows how to deliver an interesting one with characters who each have their own personalities, some who are quite lovable and others whom I could happily hit on the head to try and knock some sense into them (but they are usually the most interesting too, Lol!)
In this story we have Lady Clara Mapleton who would love to be able to trully fall in love and also Crispin, also known as The Devil (and I thought that that title said it all). These two delightful characters dance around each other throughout the book until the penny drops .
I loved every single moment, every single uncertainty displayed by them and every inch gained towards their happy every after.

This book is about Crispin and Clara who had a past, which was not good. Crispin spread a rumor about Clara in her first season. A few years later during a Masquerade Ball, Crispin kissed Clara who then announced it was ok because they were engaged. This started their fake engagement. I am still a little confused about Crispin’s actions, I don’t know why he spread the rumor besides he was drunk, and I still was not sure why he kissed her in the middle of the dance floor. Because I felt like I never had these exact answers, I am giving it a 4-star rating. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book written by a good author.

The concept was good, AMD I enjoyed the characters. However, the story seemed to jump around at times and things weren’t always clear. I couldn’t tell if the same lines were mistakenly repeated or if it was just written that way. I liked the characters and the friendships. The main couple enjoyed witty banter which seemed to bring them closer together, but the heroine kept going back and forth with her feelings. It was confusing and frustrating. I felt like the happy ending could have been reached sooner. This was a relatively clean novella with the mention of intimacy without any details.

The concept of this novella was good, and I really enjoyed the characters and their witty banter. The friendships added warmth to the story, and the romance between Crispin and Clara had its sweet moments. However, the plot sometimes felt jumpy, with repeated lines and unclear motivations, especially around Crispin’s past actions. The heroine’s back-and-forth feelings grew frustrating, and I felt the happy ending could have been reached sooner. Still, it’s a relatively clean read and an enjoyable novella overall, even if I wished for a bit more clarity.

This deserves a 10 star..

A fake engagement announced at a masquerade ball becomes all too real despite the fact that Clara can't stand him and Crispin only sees her as a means to an end..

Crispin and Clara try not to get close to each other because of the inevitable heartbreak and ruin that it could bring however a few stolen kisses and that heartbreak doesn't seem likely and they want everything to be real.. but can they set aside their differences to finally find happiness with each other?

This book is filled with love, heartbreak, scandal, busybody gossips and friends who stand by the Clara and Crispin no matter what happens.

I can't wait to read Alice's story.

Good beginning. Slow burn enemies to lovers. She has a real reason to hate him. He ruined her reputation once and almost did a second him. He's a wild child. Good slow switch to lovers. I disliked that it left era standards as they didn't wait till marriage. Especially after everything he put her through. I get hes a reformed rouge but it kinda felt to me like he didnt care about her social standing. (Due to standards of the time) . That part to me didn't feel real. Otherwise good book good plot.

One mild sex scene. Easily skipped. Otherwise fairly clean.

This was a strong sequel in the Courting Ruin series, it had that element that I was looking for and enjoyed from the first book. I enjoyed how good the world continued in this plot and had that historical romance element that I was looking for and was glad it was so well done. The characters were everything that I was looking for and enjoyed getting back to the series. Amanda Mariel has a strong writing style and I'm glad I was able to read this.

Love Meets Scandal
He ruined her first season, but now he’s trapped by a kiss at a masquerade. To avoid ruin, Clara boldly claims they’re engaged—and to everyone’s surprise, Crispin doesn’t disagree. Neither of them planned on falling in love, but fate clearly has other ideas.
What exactly did Crispin do to ruin Clara’s first season? And can he possibly redeem himself in her eyes? This is an entertaining historical romance with just the right mix of scandal, charm, and heart. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Crispin ruined Clara with his careless words and she makes a impulsive decision to say they are engaged when they are caught kissing. While trying to figure out how to get out of it they start to fall for each other but will threatening letters and words in the paper tear them apart? Crispin has a sarcastic wit that made me laugh. But he's also thoughtful and matured since when he first met Clara. This was a steamy enemies to lovers fake engagement romance.
