“Change, like death, is inevitable. And if you fight it, it will fight harder.”
The country of Avilonía is a land ruled by warriors who were blessed by elemental gods during a time of colonization and war. In the coastal city of Coáraluna, capital of the Moon Kingdom, lives Esmé Vespertín—a shy refugee who takes a potion for her migraines that cause her to see strange shadows. On the outside, she is a normal girl trying to get by in a world that could crumble at any moment. Yet, she harbors one of the biggest secrets in all of Coáraluna: she’s been entertaining a secret relationship with none other than Río Markaél – Avilonía’s Moon Prince.
Principe Río is a tide bender who is trying to prove himself by going on secret missions to help his father on the war front. His latest quest was the most ambitious yet, leaving him half-alive with a cursed object that could change the course of the ongoing war forever. However, when Esmé finds it by accident one evening, things take a turn, and on the night of the yearly Winter Solstice Ball, an attack on the palace reveals that she may be more special—or terrifying—than anyone could have imagined.

I was gifted an ARC from the author! Thank you so much again for the copy! Now onto an entirely spoiler-free review!
If you're someone who delighted in the elemental and tense beats of ATLA, enjoyed the growth and learning of one's past in Anastasia, and the looming dark and danger of a powerful enemy brimming with power like in LOTR, but want the beautiful inspiration of a world adorned with culture, myth and mysticism of Latin culture, this book is ABSOLUTELY for you. The representation of Latin culture, how prevalent and bright and beautiful it's written of and put in the forefront of this book was utterly refreshing and deserving of every your attention.
This book follows two characters, Esmé Vespertín whose strange migraines plague her waking moments without regular potions, and Principe Río who works to prove himself to his family with the power to bend water and tides to his will. The book is split into chapters that change perspectives of each, allowing us a clear look into the lives of two people from two very different places and classes. It shows, also, how magic touches them and how the Latin-inspired pagan gods mean different to each and how they touch their lives, an important aspect when the gods themselves have given mortals powers to defend themselves from a growing evil. The two are in a secret relationship that teeters into the forbidden considering their positions of power- or lack of- and how one night together is enough to change Esmé's life and begin the slow reveal to her and Río that there was far more secrets either of them could have fathomed to imagine.
This book was genuinely such a delight to read and I can't recommend it enough to others looking for books that delve into Latin representation and explore magic and the supernatural in different ways. The worldbuilding of this book was absolutely satisfying, with descriptions of the world giving the reader a clear eye of the place Esmé called home. The characters were so interesting, and enticed me to keep reading with their interactions, their motives, and their roundedness that made them feel alive and thus their problems real stakes in the plot at large. The key plot scenes were also incredibly mesmerizing, action packed and clear with danger and mystery that kept me asking what next, why, and shouting OH GOD for our protagonists. It led to surprising twists, though for a while in the start there I did keep shouting "WHERE ARE MY WEREWOLVES, I ASKED FOR WEREWOLVES!" I definitely got them. I got more than I bargained for and it had me screaming with joy AND fear! The build up of the plot was excellent too, a consistent rollercoaster up and up to the climax- because the winter solstice ball is just ONE of these things- that had me reading in one late night from 25% of the book to 85% and finishing the next day because I NEEDED to know.
This is now the time to look away from the review if you DO NOT want to know any negatives, as a warning, because I had a few light things that I found I didn't entirely enjoy about the book. There are NO SPOILERS in this part either!
And simply, it's this: the book needed to marinate more. I say this in a way that is light hearted, but I do think that there are several parts of the book that just needed to steep a little bit more, like a good earl grey tea in the morning. This is in NO WAY saying the book is bad- QUITE the opposite- but there were parts that I think the author definitely needed to spend more time just letting us SIT in those moments. There were some scenes that felt rushed, or scenes that were meant to be emotional that, had we sat there and really explored the depth of those emotions, I would have absolutely cried! I wouldn't even have minded if the first book in what I believe to be a series went over 300 pages. This book had me SAT. I think if the author had also prioritized a bit more showing than telling, I would have been more invested in the side characters that had less screen time. A little more time on those emotional ties and those emotional and dangerous scenes, especially in that ending, would have tied the bow on this book- the cherry on top, as it were.
Overall, stunning book with so much promise, so much beautiful scenery, worldbuilding, magic and characters, with a steady plot that kept me reading and wanting to know what was on the next page again and again. Just a little more marinating, and it would have been PERFECT. I definitely recommend this, and you should definitely give this book a try the moment it comes out in bookstores.
you know, its not very often the story starts with the main characters already established, which honestly is a missed opportunity. while i love the thrill of the chase, some of the best parts of a romance has to be the trials and tribulations a couple goes through together, and boy did the río and esmé go through the wringer in the moon prince.
while it was slow for me to get into it, the pace picked up after the ball scene (i love a good dramatic chandelier crash). from the beautiful, colourful setting to the intriguing magic system to the darling main characters, this was an exciting adult fantasy that ultimately explores a young woman trying to figure herself out. the latin-inspired world was a refreshing take on the oversaturated tired idea of a fantasy world, and the mix of culture and magic was a delight to read. the magic system was also a twist on humans using the powers of the elements. its like avatar but with no avatar and the fire nation is this old dude.
the romance was fun to read, the way esmé and río just clicked and they complement each other well, and they both each other in their character arcs. my heart goes out to esmé, who tries so hard to shrink herself to not be an inconvenience to others (FELT), and río, confident and self-assured on the outside, struggling with himself and his need to protect everyone around him. in that way, they very complement each other and help each other grow, and we love to see it! the plot itself was interesting with a good amount of mystery, as the threat of danger loomed ever close.
there are some parts that feel info-dumpy throughout, which slowed me down, and i felt like some bits were unnecessary as it felt redundant and repetitive. the writing style is personally not for me, as the modern speak can sometimes break me out of immersion of the story. the characters were distinct from each other, though some of the side characters did feel a bit flat at times. however, this wasnt a dealbreaker, and im glad to stick around to the ending, which was satisfying and set up the next book very nicely.
thank you to the author for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review!
EXCUSE ME?! Emilia why would you do this to me??? (Complimentary)😭😭 I’m so obsessed with this world and its characters! The depth to the world building is so beautiful and you can see the care in all of the details and lore👏 The characters are so three dimensional with so many layers to them and their relationships with each other🥲🫶 And the plot?? Ugh, it was such a rollercoaster of emotions in the best way bc of how immersed I was in this world and how much I cared about what was happening to all the characters😭 I’m so excited for the next book in the series and can’t wait to explore more of the Avilonía world!!!👏👏
I can already imagine how thick this book must be, which explains why it took me almost two weeks to finish (plus, my hectic weekdays sigh) Anyway, a big thankie to Emilia for providing this gorgeous ARC (I MEAN LOOK AT THE COVER‼️ *chef’s kisses*)
I have to admit, the first 150 pages had me questioning the plot of this book, but yk what? Trust the process, because right after the ball scene, everything starts making sense and OMG it gets so intense!!
I especially feel sorry for Esmé. My girl has been through so much, and it ached to read the parts after the ball 😭🫂 But despite it all, I love her character development, from being a timid, shy girl to someone assertive and confident, embracing her ability to communicate with spirits and honing her newly discovered magic.
And Río might seem confident and capable, but beneath the surface, he’s battling emotional turmoil as the future heir. His mother’s protectiveness makes it difficult for him to fully prove himself and step into his role. tbh I was really looking forward to seeing his growth and watching him act as the true heir, but with everything he had to endure after the ball, especially the curse, it must’ve been so overwhelming for him.
I also loved the family dynamic between the Markaéls. The Storm Queen, Reina Victoria, despite her poised and regal appearance as a ruler, is a doting mother who deeply cares for her family. She truly upholds her duty as queen and would do anything to protect the kingdom. And Princesa Mariela, even with her disability and reliance on sign language to communicate, never lets it hinder her from fulfilling her duties as a true princess of Avilonía.
The secret relationship really caught me off guard, I honestly thought “the boy” her friends kept teasing her about was just a figment of her imagination, considering her condition of seeing things (you can blame me for forgetting the blurb 😭) And yk what? I ate up all their affectionate, intimate moments, the yearning was just chef’s kisses. Both of them literally obssesed with each other and Río? Literally a certified lover boy 🙂↕️🫶🏻
I’m so ready for the next books of their journey, to protect their kingdom and bring down the Sun Killer once and for all.
ARC review of The Moon Prince Release date: 10 July 2025 || 📣OUT NOW📣
5/5 ⭐️ 2/5 🌶️
Not only did this book has a stunning cover, the story was told beautifully!! I was taken by surprise by how easy this book swept me into the world of magic.
The plot was thought through. The whole time I thought I knew what the plot would be… yeah I was wrong. And I looove being wrong and surprised. What an enjoyable ride through the world of Avilonia, the different realms, and creatures. We get gods, royals, humans, witches, god-givens, spirits, werewolves, and more.
The characters were diverse and each contributed to the story with their unique ranks and personalities. Esme (FMC) developed into such a character, all with flaws and strengths. Rio (MMC) was as always non-chalant and secretive with a soft-spot for Esme. I’d say he was head over heels 🙈 The bond these two have was indescribable and I live for their flirtatious conversation (I caught myself smiling) 🙂↕️
The writing was beautiful, easy to read and the storytelling flowed seamlessly. The author took the time to build the world and set up the scenes to follow.
Highly recommend this book if you’re itching to get lost in yet another magical world. Thank you to the author, Emilia Mondragon, for gifting me this eARC. All opinions in this review are my own.
Thank you to the author for an arc in exchange for an honest review. I loveeeee the cover! I got an e arc but if I saw this in person, it would be an instant buy. The artist did an amazing job!
the book is a Latin/pagan inspired epic fantasy. it has elemental magic, supernatural beings, and gods. the beginning explain the lore around the gods and the world building. it can feel slow but I felt the world building was important to explain in the beginning.
I thought it was interesting to have them already a couple in the beginning. Their romance is cute. they're madly in love and their relationship is a secret so that is the only tension. I give 1 🌶️ for spice.
Overall, I think it's a good book if you like romantasy.
I absolutely loved this book! Thank you Emilia for allowing me to not only beta read this, but to be given an ARC and allowing me to follow you on your journey! This story is definitely one of my faves. This book has everything: secret dating, Anastasia vibes, and “don’t touch her or die” moments. Not only that, but this is a Latin inspired world with witches, werewolves, and magic. This book is just so different compared to other fantasy books I have read and honestly I love it. Río and Esmé are just so perfect and I love them 🫶🏼 PLEASE READ THIS BOOK!!
“Change, like death, is inevitable. And if you fight it, it will fight harder.”
Avilonía is a land blessed by elemental gods and cursed by endless wars. In Coáraluna, the Moon Kingdom’s capital, lives Esmé Vespertín—a quiet refugee girl battling migraines… or so it seems. In reality, she’s hiding the kind of secret that could destroy everything: she’s in love with Río Markaél, the Moon Prince himself. But one cursed object, one Winter Solstice Ball, and one brutal palace attack later… Esmé learns she’s far more than just a girl in love with a prince.
Now, about the book itself: it is on the lengthy side, but don’t think that means nothing’s happening—because oh, trust me, A LOT is happening. The pacing starts calm, but once the Solstice Ball hits, the story spirals into twists, turns, and secrets you won’t see coming. The bond between Río and Esmé? So good. Their relationship is intense, emotional, and honestly one of my favorite parts of the whole story. Esmé's character growth is amazing and how she adjusts with everything is just so commendable.
The world-building is good, the creatures and magic feel vivid, and the mystery behind Esmé’s identity? You won't know till the end. One tiny thing that did bug me, though, was the writing style at times. You know when you pick up a fantasy, you expect a certain lyrical, otherworldly tone—but here and there it slipped into very casual, modern phrases. It threw me off a little, because it didn’t always match the fantasy vibe.
Still, that didn’t ruin the story for me. Even though it took me a while to finish (blame my schedule, not the book), I’d still call it worth the read.
If you’re into Romantasy filled with elemental magic, necromancy, mystery, and romance that hits from the start—you should definitely give this one a try.
This was giving lord of the rings meets avatar the last air bender for me.
This story has BODY! I can’t wait to get the physical copy and hold this world in my hands.
I really enjoyed Esme and Rio, enjoyed their banter and their interactions together. They kind of reminded me of Zuko and Katara.
The world, the world is really, really complex. There is so much to grasp and you have to pay attention otherwise you might get lost. The magic system was also very intriguing, differently handled than a lot of other fantasy books.
Why is this not a 5 star read? I was initially overwhelmed by so many characters at the very beginning of the story. This is fantasy first, romance second, and while I enjoy that type of world building and machinations, at times it felt clunky, heavy. The pace was also not consistent at times. And to be fair, it took me longer to read than I expected which I think contributed to me feeling a bit out of place at times.
It’s a really good read, captivating. And I look forward to more by this author and more specifically this world.
ALSO THAT COVER IS A SOLID 10/10, the characters aware exactly what I envisioned in my head.
This was a bit of a slower read for me. I had a hard time falling into the story. Around about ~30% the plot picked up and I was finding myself staying awake to get to one more chapter.
I enjoyed plenty but did feel it fell short in some parts. What I did love was the relationship development between the two main characters as well as the magic system. Starting the book off with lore was brilliant and it helped set the stage for the rest of the story without providing too much information right at the beginning.
Two of the biggest things that I felt could have been improved were (1) I'm not sure if it was the language used or the dialogue but the spicy scenes felt disjointed from the rest of the book and (2) there were A LOT of nicknames that I found myself flipping back and forth to see if I missed context.
If you're looking a fantasy romance based on Latin-inspired Pagan magic with some supernatural elements, I definitely recommend picking up "The Moon Prince" ✨
The Moon Prince is a beautifully written fantasy romance with a slow-burn core and richly developed world. The story follows Esmé, a girl caught between two worlds, grappling with grief, identity, and a destiny tied to ancient magic. The pacing takes its time, but once the plot settles in, it rewards us with emotional depth, romantic tension, and a world full of spiritual threads and hidden truths.
Esmé's growth is one of the story's strongest elements-watching her find her voice and purpose is deeply satisfying. Río, the male lead, is both princely and quietly broken, which makes their connection feel all the more powerful. Their chemistry leans more on the emotional side, which adds a softness to the heavier themes.
There are a few moments where the narrative feels overly dense with lore, and some scenes could've been more tightly edited, but the emotional payoff makes it worth it.
If you're fan of magical destiny, spirit realms, and heartfelt romance then you should definitely read this.
Thank you Emilia for giving me the opportunity to read this Arc.
I was lucky to be chosen as part of the ARC team for this book in exchange for an honest review! Tbh i was SO excited to see the premise and plot map of this book and was even more excited while reading it! I absolutely love how Mondragon wove her culture into her storytelling and I really enjoy the intricate world building. It was absolutely a breath of fresh air to be able to explore a non eurocentric world in a fantasy setting; something that is hardly seen imo. The characters were fun and compelling and even the side characters were very memorable. I really loved the perspective switching which kept things interesting and allowed for deeper exploration of the characters. Some parts took me a little bit to get through though whether it’s because they were slower or I just have bouts of being unable to focus i’m unsure. OVERALL a great start to a trilogy and so so vibrant. Really, I love it.
I think I've stumbled onto my new favorite fantasy series! The Moon Prince takes place in a realm of magic and recovery from a long and devastating war that literally split their continent in two. Esme is our FMC who has only known one thing, that she is Emse Vespertin from Anelante and she moved to Coaraluna when she was a child after her parents died in the war...
This book turned me every which way but loose. The world building was absolutely perfect and made my reading completely immersive. This story had magic, mystery, and a hell of a plot twist. The spice and romantic tension was top tier. I LOVE the chemistry between Esme and Rio. This book made me feel all the feels...I hate that I have to wait for the next book to drop but plenty of time for a re read. Soild 4.5 stars.
I am thankful to be given the chance to review The Moon Prince of my own accord, through being offered an eARC.
This book starts out slowly, showing the early romance between the two main characters of Esme and Rio, mingling with their respective POV of their daily lives and environments. Then, the pace changes and their lives change, becoming more intriguing with lots of twists to entice the reader. I really enjoyed Esme’s story, and this book being in both her and Rio’s POV enhanced the reading. I can’t wait to continue this series.
This book got me out of a reading slump 😍 and I LOVED IT!!! It's fast paced but everything happens at the right time and something i didn't know I needed was an already developed love story right from the start. Rio and Esme???? Very very cute, but the character development of the Queen? I started off not liking her and ended up saving her close to my heart!!! I can't wait to read the rest and I definitely wish I could be a Moon Princess! If you're into fantasy, you HAVE TO READ THIS!!! Also, thank you Emilia for the ARC copy, can't wait to have the physical one to display on my shelf 😘😘😘
First, I would like to say thank you to the author!! It was such an honour to receive this ARC!! 🥰
This book was everything, and more!! I loved every second of it. Since the first sentence, I was looked in!! 🤩
It was an amazing combination of romance and fantasy. The world building was amazing. The storyline was fantastic, and the characters were perfect to me.
It had everything that I loved and more 😭 I can't wait for the rest!!
First off, I would like to start off by saying it is so refreshing to see an mmc's parents not be evil for once. I absolutely adored this book and I had so much fun with it and I had moments where I was on the edge of my seat. I loved all the characters, Rio is the sweetest mmc and the romance was amazing. ALSO, there is a dog! The world building was really intriguing as well and I loved the magical aspects. Im MAD at the ending though, what a cliffhanger!
I LOVED this book! The world and characters are so unique and the twists and turns had me reeling. Esme and Río are both so likeable and there’s a DOG and he’s precious and adorable. I really enjoyed the magic system and the difference between witches/wizards and those with God-given powers. The ending had me gagged and I cannot wait for book two 🤩
If you’re a fan of Maya and the Three , with a white haired prince and Mexican inspired fantasy x lore, this is the book for you! The world itself is so so beautiful, the lore is so intricate and well done and the characters themselves?? I fell in love with every single one, they have such breath and life and are so memorable 😭 Rio is such a swoon worthy MMC, I absolutely adore him and his devotion to Esme and his family is so!!! And Esme ofc 🥹😭 PEOPLE PLEASING GIRLIE THAT SPOKE TO MY HEART AND HER ARC IS SO SO AMAZING
Please do yourselves a favour and pick up this book!!
I loved this story. The fact the romance is there from the start, the effortless way they care for each other. The colourful characters and back stories. The whole thing is vibrant and interesting and leaves you wanting more.
Rio, my white-haired love, new book boyfriend for the collection.
There are so many places this universe could go and I can't wait to see where it leads me.
Thankyou so much for this ARC. Took me a long time to finish it - my fault, was very busy. But I love love this book. I love Rio and Esme. The plot twists!!! GIRLLLLL!!!
This is a sweeping beautiful start to a series where you get character growth and development, world building, and a nice pace of plot. Esme as a FMC is a good mix of knowing who she is and standing her ground and being consistent while also being able to learn and grow through the challenges and experiences she has. Her relationship with Rio is so well done, and balances that experience of loving someone so deeply and still being stunned by them and being in their presence. Rio as a character, as a male character, feels and emotes and I couldn’t love that more. Those bonds he has with his family, the strength of his character, all contribute to his understanding of how you treat others, and duty. He’s not one to say his way is the only right way regardless of how anyone else feels.
Theres A real strength in reading stories where the cultural influences are present in the building of a whole new world which deepens the ability to connect to the world, and to the characters. Even when faced with a huge challenge, when faced with grief, when faced with identity concerns, the writing allows you to stay connected to the heart of the story. I can’t wait for the next installment!
