James Miller has a stalker. Weird thing is, it’s a cat. He hires Griffin Fitzpatrick, who talks to animals, to find out why an orange tabby is following him. But then Miler is murdered in a locked room, where the only occupants are the dead man and a live cat. Since he was prepaid, Griff feels an obligation to find out why the cat was following Miller and who the cat belongs to.
Griff works the case with Detective Sheila Green, whose feelings for him are much harder to understand than the simple purring of a cat. She informs him that Miller’s father-in-law also died in a locked room. And the mystery just gets more baffling from there…
CATastrophe, the second book in Chloe Kendrick's Animal Instincts series, can be read as a stand alone mystery however it would be better read as part of the series as there is no recap presented in the first few pages of what occurred in the first book in this series - Pawsible Suspects. There are references to how amateur sleuth Griff Fitzpatrick was affected by the disappearance of his sister and the eventual failure of the family to remain intact as well as his relationship with Detective Sheila Green which I would like to believe make more sense to readers having read Pawsible Suspects previously. Wasn't a huge fan of the author's repetitive statements throughout the book referring to Griff's desire to be unnoticeable from the world. Not sure why some authors choose to repeat a particular character's internal thoughts over and over again but I am sure that this practice drives me nuts. I felt the writing was stiff and amateurish which prevented me from reading for extended periods of time. The author had a great idea but her delivery wasn't spot on for me. Not a bad book BUT not a great book either. Average at best.
When a client tells Griffin Fitzpatrick, the Animal Whisperer, that he is being stalked around the streets of Toledo by a long-tailed orange tabby cat, that's one thing. But when said client is found dead of unknown causes in a house with all the doors and windows locked from the inside, that's quite another....
Once more we have multiple mysteries. Our hero, besides talking to dogs has added cats to his repertoire and they lead him not only to solve the case at hand, but an unsatisfactorily closed cold case as well. But beyond that is a deeper, never solved case, the disappearance of his sister, Susan. Case closed, case open, and a life yet to save.
Even though I read these books in the wrong order the were cute little mysteries. Griff is hired by a man that is being followed by a cat. The man is found dead in a room with the doors and windows locked. Will Griff find out how he died or was he murdered.
I like the step by step reasoning to solve the mystery, as well as the psychological aspects of both the cases at hand and the main character's personal journey. The narrator kind of reminds me of "The Mentalist" (TV). I'll read the next book in the series.
You might think that's an odd description of a murder mystery but that is exactly how I felt. Storyline does flag slightly at the beginning. But it will pull you in till you can't put it down. As the main character fills out with deeper nuance of how he has become the person he is today, I found myself with greater empathy for the unusual "career" path he has fallen into. Great read.
This is the second book in the series. Griff Fitzpatrick who knows how to "listen" when animals "talk" to him is on the case again. This time he is hired to figure out why a cat is following his client. Only the client ends up dead. He not only solves the murder but an older murder that had been ruled a suicide. He cleverly puts clues together and is a darn good investigator with good instincts.
I have to say I had some qualms about reading the 2nd book in this series. I don't like cats and that is what this book is about--there even a cat on the book cover! Plus the first book in this series didn't impress me. However this was a better mystery than the first. I don't think I would read this again but the mystery was unusual.
Since my cat dander allergy is minor I wonder about the severity of the result herein. However since I know someone with an extreme reaction to another allergy I know such can happen. Besides, the book was delightful and we'll written. I intend to read more of your writings.
most of the animal centered mysteries I've read have the cats our dogs finding the clues that lead to the solution. in this book the cats are supporting characters but in a small way. the main characters human based mystery is what caught my attention and created a desire to continue on with the series to see if it comes to a firm conclusion.
I enjoyed this cozy mystery that involves pets and likable characters. I also appreciate how the author writes about how certain events can affect a person their entire lives without them actively thinking about it especially when the event is traumatic.
The concept is cute, but the plot didn't really hold together very well, and the characters except for Griff were very shallow. I had a Kindle version, and there were lots of typos and editing errors. It was an OK read, but I'm not likely to read others in the series.
A cozy mystery about discovering who murdered the man who hired Mr Fitzpatrick (who talks to animals) to follow him and see the orange cat following him.
read the series in order. besides the main mystery there is a slow uncovering of what happened to the hero's sister who disappeared all those years ago.
