Vulkan Lives

Rate this book
A Horus Heresy Novel

In the wake of the Dropsite Massacre at Isstvan V, the survivors of the Salamanders Legion searched long and hard for their fallen primarch, but to no avail. Little did they know that while Vulkan might have wished himself dead, he lives still…

READ IT BECAUSE

It's a deeply personal tale of two brothers, as Konrad Curze shows his love for Vulkan by torturing him relentlessly and killing him over and over. It's dark, twisted, and revelatory. The story also features perhaps the best use of a hammer in the entire Horus Heresy.

THE STORY

Vulkan lives! He languishes in a hidden cell for the entertainment of a cruel gaoler – his brother, Konrad Curze. Enduring a series of hellish tortures designed to break his body and spirit, he witnesses the depths of the Night Haunter's depravity, but also discovers something else – a revelation that could change the course of the entire war.

Nick Kyme should really just stick to editing. Vulkan is written like just a normal guy with none of the presence a primarch should have, the Word Bearers and Shattered Legion characters have no depth at all and even Narrick is only interesting because he’s a traitor of the OG traitor legion.

The prose is samey and boring, with none of the flair most authors bring to their work, in fact I put the audiobook at 2x speed for a bit in the beginning just because of how bored I was.

The only reason this gets 3 stars is because the parts about Istvaan V are interesting and the climax with Vulkan and Curze is really good. Otherwise I’d say only read it if you’re a big fan of the Salamanders or you want to read every single Horus Heresy book like me.
