Boyce is known for action-packed epic fantasy, powerful heroes, and riveting magical stories filled with twists and intrigue. And, of course, a bit of humor sprinkled through it all. Pick up your kindle and get lost in the journey.
Hidden on Earth are Lichgates to the world of Ourea. Twenty-year-old Kara Magari, unknowingly steps through one while hiking in the Rockies. In an attempt to evade an oncoming storm, she finds shelter behind a door that will lead her to a sunken library where she will become the keeper of the Grimoire, a 1,000-year-old magic book that belonged to the Vagabond. Kara is his successor, and as the new Vagabond she must help Ourea, a world she doesn’t know, and its inhabitants find peace after centuries of conflict. Many want to use her but there are few who want to help her...or at least seem too. This includes Braeden, a 24-year-old Ourean, but he has been hiding who he is for half of his life and may have his own motives. Should she trust him? Should she trust anyone?
This epic fantasy, set in contemporary times (just not always on Earth as we know it), has everything that makes for a great tale: a well-paced plot you lose yourself in and read anxiously to see what’s next, a fantastic setting, a main character you root for, developed secondary characters, a potential and interesting love interest subplot, and a show-not-tell style of writing.
I was immediately drawn to Kara. She’s not a perfect person, who is, but she is the perfect character for the role that Boyce created. She’s unsure of herself and her capabilities, and it’s wonderful to see her grow as the saga progresses. She’s sarcastic and stubborn but smart and thoughtful. Braeden is equally not perfect, but just right for his character. He’s strong and charming, but conflicted about who he is, where he belongs, and how he feels about Kara. His growth over the saga is also enjoyable to witness. Watching the two interact and react to one another is a treat. The supporting cast of characters are well written and it was nice to see how they fit into the overall saga. No one is extraneous, everyone plays a role, and that too is such a strength in this saga.
Boyce creates a beautiful but dangerous world that I was thrilled to visit, emphasis on visit. The world of Ourea is richly described and the settings, as well as the action, are easily pictured, even sometimes down to the smells. Boyce then filled this world of Ourea with strong characters and a captivating plot that kept me up after bedtime.
Each book is a story within a greater saga. They have a clear beginning, middle, and end that leaves one satisfied but eagerly grabbing for the next book.
Get ready for twists, turns, and jaw dropping moments. In other words, get ready for a serious book hangover.
After reading the first book of the Grimoire Saga, Lichgates, a few years ago, I knew I was in for the entirety of the saga. Boyce builds the world of Ourea, her characters, and the a great non-stop plot that hooked me early on in book one.
Boyce didn’t disappoint with the release of book two, Treason, either. This is also the case in Heritage, book three. With each book, there is more introduced to the reader and more to hook that reader in. I feel that the author’s writing keeps getting stronger with each book, as well. It’s not often that an author can get me immersed in the world of a book so much where I want to demand the next, but Boyce knows how to do it.
With this box set, I feel a little jealous of those new to the series. For those who get addicted from the beginning, like I did, there won’t be a long wait for the next book because it’s already there. It’s also a great way to get ready for Illusion, the big finale.
This series is truly amazing! I first stumble upon it when I downloaded the first book for free, but I couldn't have imagined how much I would grow to love it.
This is a young adult fantasy series which follows Kara, a human who runs into this magic hidden world within a piece of our Earth called Ourea. You will be hooked from page one with S.M. Boyce's excellent world building skills and all the cool different races and magical creatures you discover.
The characters are rich, funny and very complex. You'll discover some very intricate villains and so many surprising twists in the plot you'll be so glad you'll have the next book ready waiting for you. Trust me, the wait is torturous!
This book, makes you nervous, frustrated, scared, happy and laugh out loud. It deals with courage, loss, love and friendship all mixed up with a wonderful dose of magic.
I would recommend this boxed set to all fantasy fans out there because it won't disappoint.
I admit that I only downloaded this book because it was free on my Kindle. However, once I read Litchgates I knew that I had stumbled on an epic treasure. I read the entire book in one day! I absolutely loved the story and the characters. It was a new world that I immediately fell in love with. I recommenced it to all of my friends and even gave a few copies as Christmas presents. (Bonus awesome points: S.M. Boyce is awesome at keeping in communication with her fans) I quickly read Treason, the second novel. It was even better than Litchgates. The characters develop further and I was really drawn in to the struggle of Ourea. The moment I finished I was already counting down the minutes until Heritage was released. I am so happy that I stumbled upon these books. I think I am going to re-read them all in preparation for Illusion :)
I really love this series. Lichgates, Treason and Heritage are all on my top ten list and I'm sure Illusion will be too. I can't wait for the fourth book and the discount included at the end of this one makes it even more worth while.
The characters develop throughout the series. You can see them change into better (sometimes worse--in the case of the antagonists) people. World building is a strong point for S. M. Boyce and you'll love the world of Ourea if you're a fan of fantasy. Creatures of all different types run around this place and it's fun to see what Boyce will come up with next.
The action and plot in each book is always well written and entertaining. It will take you on a ride and you'll want more!
The Grimoire Saga keeps getting better, which is why I'm chomping at the bit for Illusion!
The Grimoire Saga is much more than a fantastical read. It resembles our world in so many ways – our wars, our beliefs, our prejudices against other cultures, and the bad decisions often made by the world’s rulers since the beginning of human civilization.
This was in most enjoyable series, the final was a good end to a great adventure. It tells of Cedric and how he became vagabond, introducing characters and places that we grew to love in the chronicles Ory. Well written, would recommend this to anyone who enjoys epic fantasy adventures.
Wow I wanted the story to continue with Kara and Breaden. Exciting, adventurous, action, romance, warring, evil and goodness all written within these pages. What a splendid read this was and will definitely reread this again. I highly recommend this series.
I enjoyed this story more than I thought I would. While I don't care for the story of the first vagabond as much, Kara's story held my interest and kept me coming back for more.
A great new fantasy world, with Interesting Characters, political backstabing, romance, and ofcourse, magic and action as kingdoms collide and wars rage.
I read & reviewed the books individually, here are my reviews all in one place:
Litchgates:
haven't read a fantasy book like this, in a good long while. This was good old-fashioned escapist doorway-into-another-world style magic. The world is rich, and the main character is relatable. The tension was maintained throughout, drawing you on & on. I can't wait to read the next one!
Treason:
This is the second in the Grimoire Saga. From beginning to end, it never slowed, never let up. The characters were real enough to love and hate, even after I finished. As I said in my review of the first in the series, this is the best fantasy I've read in a while. This will definitely be worth rereading. The twist and turns were perfectly laid out & executed. I can't wait to see what S.M. Boyce has up her sleeve in the next one!
Heritage:
As with the other two books in this series, Heritage is beautifully written. It's an emotional reading, including rage, holy tacos, I wanted to throttle one of the characters.
The romance is sweet. The threat to life is constant. These characters are so well written, they could be real.
The big twist was unexpected, & well done.
This is an amazing fantasy series. I'm excited to read the next book!
Illusion:
Illusion was an epic ending to the Grimoire Saga. I am truly impressed with Ms. Boyce's writing.
Last books in a series always seem to be the toughest, and the ones most likely to leave me dissatisfied. That's not the case with this one! The pacing is perfect. There is tension, there is war, there is resolution.
These characters feel real. They have realistic reactions, throughout the series. You feel their pain, their love, their excitement.
And while all the loose ends are tied up, I want more! Luckily, the author started another series, concerning the back stories of some of the prominent characters. Yahoo!
Clever, exciting and different I could not put this book down. There is something for every reader: magic, excitement and romance all wrapped up with intrigue and new worlds and races. I had to buy the rest of the series before I got to the end so I wouldn't run out of the story.
S.M Boyce creates new races each with distinguishing characteristics and physical traits that come alive in your imagination and she weaves an intricate historical background with built in prejudices and battles and wars that could feed a stunning prequel to the series one day. You want your own Flick to snuggle and love and Lichgates to travel with. My biggest disappointment with the series is that each book is shorter than the one before it so your ending comes faster than you want it to. Great read, kept me tied up for the entire long weekend with very disgruntled breaks.
I honestly cannot get enough of this series and I will probably be reading it again and again.
I really enjoyed reading these 4 books. It had tons of action, and is well detailed. I recommend this to anyone of any age that wants to read fantasy. From the beginning of Vagabond Kara's story till the end of war driven-hidden world, now peaceful, I was hooked. S.M. Boyce is a fantastic writer and story teller. You too will enjoy this series.
This is a great deal for three books in the series. Book 2 was fantastic - great plot, pacing, twist and such a satisfying continuation from book 1. Four stars Book 3 was slow, over written and really painful to read in some spots. Two stars.
I really enjoyed this series, the different ways of each Yakima and how they were able to come together and make Ours a peaceful. Love the vagabond and Kara and Braedon make a wonderful couple.
Kept me interested. I love these fantasy type books. Great at description and character building. Looking forward to the "back story" on these characters.
