Rocket Blues

Rate this book
When Rocket gets cut from his AAA bantam hockey team, he needs to re-evaluate his priorities.

Bryan Rockwood (aka "Rocket") is faced with the unthinkable: being cut from the Huskies — the AAA hockey team he has played on for three years. With no other teams interested in him, Bryan reluctantly joins a AA team, the Blues, at his best friend Maddy's insistence.

Things only get worse when Rocket sees that the Blues don't take hockey seriously. Facing the Huskies in the round robin will give Rocket the chance to prove his skills, but in order to keep his hockey dreams (and his friends) Rocket will have to realize that while hockey is his passion, it is not his entire life.

I gave this book a 5 star rating because it was very good and had lots of good spelling/strong words. The book takes place in Bowmont, Wilmont, the rink, Bryan's apartment, and Bryan's school. I couldn't figure out when the book takes place but it must be recent. The book relates to me because I tried out for AA and got cut and I had to fight to get onto team 2! Bryan is a good hockey player and he gets cut from his AAA team for being small and he is trying to get onto any other team, but most teams are full, what will Bryan do! I also recommend this book to anyone that likes the sport of hockey, other sports and funny books.

When I was reading the book Rocket blues it felt like it took me a decade to get past it and it bored me to death. It has repetitive scenes and it's storyline is really dull and stale. It is a fiction book by David skuy also chosen to be an red maple selected book.

So it starts of with a boy named Bryan Rockwood also known as “Rocket” who has been on the triple A hockey huskies for 3 years straight but this year everything has changed. About 4 years ago Rocket moved to a apartment with his mom in a gang infested area due to his parents getting divorced. He goes to school with his 2 best friends Ty and Adam and he also had a friend named maddie living in his apartment. He faces a lot of challenging situations and has no one to talk to other than maddie and his mom at times because she has to work to afford her and Rocket expenses. His best friends aren't loyal to him anymore and he meets a group of new people and a role model to make him do what he does best. The setting takes place in a gang infested area in a shady apartment.

Positives and Negatives
Negatives
So let's start with the negatives with this book because it is most what the book has. To begin there are repetitive scenes in the book for example when Rocket and Maddy go to Rockets apartment after school and talk about their problems while watching tv. These scenes get boring because you know what will happen and they create no change to the original plot. The second thing that i wanted to talk about is the quantity of characters. There are way too many characters in this book to keep up with and most of these characters have no role in the main plot for example raja the gangster that ruined Rockets gear. Therefore the unnecessary characters just ruin the book more than it has been ruined. They would make a new scene with new characters but they will not ever mention that in the book again for example the trivia team.

Positives
Well, there aren't a lot of positives about this book but it had a sort of unique storyline and plot. If there was a little more work done on this book there might have been a chance for this book in my opinion. And also one of the positives was that it counted as a book counted for red maple.

Conclusion
Therefore all of these negatives really made me disgusted and i would never read a book from David Skuy again. The book could have had a chance if there was less characters and the setting was more colourful and creative. Therefore i do not suggest this book to readers or hockey fans because of it’s dull setting, repetitive scenes and number of useless characters.

“Rocket Blues”

The Silver Birch book “Rocket blues” that was written by David Skuy is a book about a kid named Bryan that has no life and just plays hockey 24/7. The book is 246 pages of pure garbage. I do not recommend this to children of all ages as it kills brain cells and is extremely repetitive which can leave you traumatized for life. This book should be terminated from the markets because of the damage it does to kids.

In my opinion the thing that makes the book as bad as it is, the amount of detail, the slow story build up and the repetitive “hockey talk” during his games. Even hockey fans would cringe if they read the book,Also they talk about how rocket was on the Huskies before way too much and the story was told multiple times throughout the book. The book would be at least 30 pages shorter if there wasn't all the extra detail. When I say extra detail I'm talking about rocket saying every single little thing that happened during the game “Rocket passes to Blake, Blake gives it to Rocket, Rocket gives it to André and so on, All that garbage makes the story build up very slowly which can make the reader lose interest.

If you are buying your child this book just know how much harm you are doing to their young brains. They will start writing books like David Skuy, which no one should do, who wants their kid to write like one of the worst authors ever, I suggest buying them Robert Munsch books which teach children about sharing and accepting each other, unlike David Skuy who teaches kids to be cocky and arrogant like rocket.

This book has very few positives, actually only 1 positive and that was that they talk about the best sport which is Hockey. If you spent or considered wasting $9.99 you might have already read one of David Skuys books which kill brain cells. If this book was a fast food place it would be McDonalds, they are both bad for your health. I rate this book 2 out of 5 stars (it only got the 2 because the book talks about hockey).

Rocket blues is one of the best fiction sports books that I have ever read. It was released in 2015 in the fiction genre and one of the silver birch books of 2016. The author is David Skuy.

Rocket blues is a book about a boy named Brayan Rocketwood ( Also known as Rocket) and is about how he was the top scorer in the AAA league. But there is a twist, there is an new coach and the coach doesn't want him on the team in the next season because he of his height. He has trouble getting back on an team in the AAA and he eventually has to go to an team in the AA league called the Blues. His friends don't hang out with him anymore because they got into a fight and are on different teams .This book is about how an Bryan proves the new coach wrong about his decision and gets his friends back.

I really like how the author in this book puts the words together making you feel like you are watching an actual hockey game like when he was playing his first game in the AA league. Also i like the character of Rocket which was really neat because he's not like a typical hockey player, he's even more into the sport. Also rocket was brave and confident in himself when he played.

I think maybe next time the author got a bit off track with explaining a lot what happens outside of the rink and like when he was explaining a lot of what was happening in Rockets school. Also the author should put more detail what happened outside of the rink because he did an great job of explaining in the games but not that much explaing what happens outside of the rink.

Rocket Blues is an book that can be read by anyone 10 and up and is an really good book.
Rocket Blues is an great silver birch book that i would recommend you to read as one of your 2016 silver birch books.Rocket Blues is one of my favourite silver birch books and i'm sure you will like it to.

I am reading Red Cedar nominated books for our Battle of the Books group at Vanway. I am kind of late on the draw for reading the books, so I took some home over Spring break to peruse. I just finished Rocket Blues and I thought it was excellent. It was the type of book that had a good message particularly for boys. I would like my nephews to read this book, since their lives are very much eat, sleep and breathe hockey. This book addresses the big question.....What will you do, if hockey doesn't work out. I really thought the main character Bryan had a lot of integrity and showed a lot of true emotions about being cut from his AAA team. The novel was very realistic. I liked the way he became involved with another group of kids, who he never would have had he not been cut from the team. I also like how he questioned the way his group of friends treated others and how he recognized that he was a part of that too. This would be a good read aloud novel for Intermediate students. I really think it deals with a tough situation in a positive way. I would highly recommend it, even for adults.

I read the book Rocket Blues. This book is about a boy named Bryan who has been a AAA player his whole life. When tryouts start for the best team in the league, the Huskies, Bryan thinks he is already on the team and he doesn't try for the tryouts. He soon regrets his decision when he gets cut and is then forced to go down and play AA. Things only get worse for Bryan when kids from Huskies start to bully him because he is playing AA. I enjoyed the book because I could relate to it and I would definitely read another book by this author. I got this book from the library and I suggest it to anybody who like realistic fiction.

Any boy who has been cut from a hockey team will identify with Rocket's blues. Bryan (Rocket) is trying to make the best of a bad situation but can't seem to lose his terrible attitude towards his new team mates after being cut from AAA. The locker room banter and the boys' character portrayals are very realistic and well done. Recommended for sports readers and hockey fans.

I like David Skuy's books. Real kids who are passionate about life and sport, facing challenges and rising to the occasion. This one felt deeper than Undergrounders and Striker, and I appreciated that. The main character, Bryan, is a bit larger than life, and I liked him very much, along with the supporting cast. A very kid-pleasing tale.

Bryan is one of those young boys who lives and breathes hockey. The AAA team, the Huskies, has been his focus for years, but suddenly he finds himself cut from the team. This has a far-reaching impact on Bryan and his relationships. Rocket Blues is definitely a "hockey book", but has a lot more to offer and is very well-written and engaging.
Short-listed for the 2016 MYRCA.
