Monica McCabe grew up surrounded by tales of lost civilizations, ancient mysteries, and secret societies. It’s clearly to blame for her troublesome curiosity, love of exploration, and endless travel. Raise your hands if you like going to the dentist. What if the dentist came to you, would that be better? Now, picture a hippo with a toothache, in Africa and the only dentist available was in the United States. After fixing her patient’s tooth, Miranda Parrish finds herself knee deep in the smuggling of blood diamonds, as well as wicked attracted to special agent Matt Bennett, a special agent on a mission to avenge his parents’ brutal murders and end the exploitation of the people of southern Africa.

Like oil and water at first, these two must learn to work together to stay alive and save a country in peril. Diamond Legacy by Monica McCabe pits one headstrong and beautiful woman and one bull-headed alpha male on a mission against the dark and deadly world of crime for money. Like the thorn in an elephant’s foot, will these two topple the powers that be or will they be crushed into oblivion by the weight of graft and the power of the almighty dollar?

Grab your gear and get ready for a trip to Botswana, where the heat, the tension and beauty of the land comes to life under Monica McCabe’s guiding hand. If you’ve been to Africa, you will feel you are returning, if not, then trust in the descriptions that Ms. McCabe shares. They are spot on. A great read with suspense and a budding romance between two people who once were dedicated only to the pursuit of their own missions in life.

This is Monica McCabe’s first novel, and it has a very interesting concept. The setting is Katango, Botswana in Africa. Miranda Parrish is a dental zoologist who is sent there to give a rare albino hippo a root canal. When she arrives, she finds herself in the middle of a diamond smuggling ring.

Special Agent Matt Bennett works in Katango as an undercover agent for International Diamond Security. His official job is to break up the diamond smuggling ring. However, Matt has an ulterior motive. Fifteen years ago, his parents were murdered, and he plans to avenge their deaths.

Miranda and Matt are instantly attracted, but Matt is trying very hard to keep her out of danger from this evil gang. Miranda, on the other hand loves adventure and refuses to sit back and watch Matt work alone in getting rid of these people. Instead, she puts herself at risk while she helps Matt. Eventually, Miranda and Matt need to work together to, not only stop the illegal activities of this gang, but to also protect each other.

I enjoyed this book very much because it is different than the other romantic suspense books I have read. I have never read a book that takes place in Africa, and this author does a wonderful job of describing the country appealing all our senses to make us feel as though we are actually there. Also, I don’t usually think about African animals in their habitat, but when I do, I do not think of them having having root canals.

I, also think that the author does a wonderful job of revealing Miranda and Matt’s characteristics. They are very strong and adventurous characters because they choose to live in Africa among the dangerous animals and the equally dangerous smugglers.

I recommend this book because even though the problem is not new, the location and the plot are very unusual for a romantic suspense novel.

This was my first experience with this author, so I had no idea what to expect. What I found was an exciting story set in Africa. The author's descriptions made the location seem real and beautifully untamed. Miranda is a veterinary dentist who was commissioned to travel with her intern to an animal preserve in Africa to work for several weeks. Before she even gets to the presence, she is confronted with the violence of the country and also the presence of Matt, who works with local law enforcement. When she later sees Matt acting as a janitor at the presence, she realizes he is undercover. Fearing his investigation will in some way harm the prestige she is coming to love, Miranda uses Matt's fear of having his cover blown in order to work her way into his investigation of diamond and gun smuggling. Miranda tends to just plunge in and look later, so Matt has his hands full trying to protect her. The more time the two spend together, the more they realize they might have something that could last if they can survive the investigation.

I enjoyed the story and the lighthearted banter between Matt and Miranda. There were also several endearing and funny animal moments. Overall, it was a great relaxing read.

I received a copy from Net Galley for review.

I was lucky enough to get a sneak peak at this gem of a story as a beta reader, and let me tell you - this is one thrill ride you don't want to miss! A hunky hero, a smart and sassy heroine, a gorgeous setting that will take your breath away, and suspense/action that will have you up all night reading - this book has that and more!

Miranda Parish heads off to Africa to put her veterinary skills to good use at the Katanga animal sanctuary and to seek the adventure of a lifetime. She gets much more than she bargained for when she runs into Matt Bennett, special agent on the hunt for diamond smugglers and the arms dealers who murdered his parents. When Katanga gets caught in the crossfire, these two form an unlikely alliance, succumbing to passion along the way. But can they survive Matt's thirst for revenge and Miranda's stubbornness?

Think Romancing the Stone meets Indiana Jones. Definitely recommend!

The author's storytelling is intriguing and entertaining. Not only was I transformed to another country through her words, I came to care for the Matt and Miranda, but even her secondary character found his way into my heart. I loved Jason and his colorful teasing of Miranda. The author also brings to light the tragedy of diamond smuggling and the toll it takes on Africa and it's people. Well done!

There's something about romantic suspense novels set in foreign countries that always draw me in and Diamond Legacy was no exception. I mean, just look at that cover for one, then throw in an undercover agent and a woman that isn't afraid of a little danger and I was hooked!

Miranda has just been given the opportunity of a lifetime... Spend five weeks working at an animal sanctuary in Africa. She's a little hesitant at first because Africa holds bittersweet memories for her family, but not only is it a great career move, Miranda is a wild child at heart and this is just the sort of adventure she craves.

At the airport in Africa, Miranda gets in the middle of a thief take down with the hottest cop she's ever seen. Imagine her surprise when said cop ends up being the janitor at Katanga, the animal sanctuary where she works.

Matt is an agent at IDS, International Diamond Security, that's gone undercover as a janitor at Katanga on Intel that someone there is smuggling diamonds. As soon as Miranda learns that Katanga is at risk she insists on helping Matt and the two start clashing left and right.

Of course the attraction is there from the get go and arguing with each other only seems to fuel that desire. And once the two of them start spending more time together the attraction starts to turn into something neither are willing to admit. I wish I could say that once the two of them got together it was explosive, but unfortunately the sexy times were a little lackluster in my opinion.

Luckily, the action and suspense totally made up for that. Between stakeouts and molotov cocktails, there was non stop action that had me on the edge of my seat. And what made it even better was having a heroine that wasn't a shrinking violet when it came to danger... Oh no, that girl held her own and then some. She did have one or two TSTL moments when she probably should have kept her mouth shut but I loved that she refused to go down without a fight.

I would have liked a little more at the end but the epilogue wrapped things up pretty nicely. Overall, this was a great romantic suspense and I can't wait to see what Monica McCabe delivers next.

If you like tales of adventure, romance, and exotic places you’ll love this romp through Africa pitting a spirited dental zoologist and a sexy undercover agent against diamond smugglers. The romance sizzles, the locales will sweep you away to a place filled with intrigue, suspense, and edge-of-your-seat pacing. I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention Jason, a secondary character that I really hope the author will consider giving a complete story. Along with main characters, Miranda and Matt, he stole my heart. I’d love to see him get his own book. Also worth signaling out is Roz, a klepto primate, who gets gold stars from me for her fabulous undercover work and scene-stealing habits.

A fun read that is cleverly plotted. Don’t be fooled by the cover. This is not an erotic romp. It’s a well-constructed, carefully plotted tale that works as suspense, adventure, and yes—romance. Kudos to the author for a satisfying read!

Diamond Legacy by Monica McCabe is an action packed suspense starting with a toothache. Not your average toothache mind you. From there it heads straight into diamond smuggling and international crime. There are villains galore, a handsome agent and one too eager for her own good heroine.

One of the highlights of this romantic thriller is the way the author brings the African landscape alive the eyes of veterinary dentist Miranda Parish. It is wonderfully written. Besides the setting, the characters are fleshed out with their hopes, fears and dreams so clearly exposed.
Monica McCabe is a new author for me but I’m hoping that there are more stories with strong characters in exotic locations.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is an exciting and interesting romantic adventure story. It makes some serious points, but also has plenty of human and animal interest. I found the leads to be fun, and was routing for them to work out a way of having it all. The setting in Africa was pleasing and the political issues were informative, and sadly believable.

If you like a strong plot with your romance, and a mystery to solve, then this is for you.

A dental zoologist, an undercover janitor, diamond and gun smugglers and a thieving monkey. Funny, fast paced action, and plenty of sexual tension. Really great story.
When Miranda is offered the chance of a lifetime to go to African, she and her assistant pack up and go for six weeks. But she has a penchant for getting into trouble. Matt is undercover to take down a diamond smuggling ring. He tries to keep Miranda out of it but she will not stop investigating. When she gets kidnapped by being in the wrong place at the wrong time, Matt will do anything to get her back.

Incredibly entertaining high adventure read, written with off-beat humour. Diamond Legacy is such a standout because of the way it differs from the usual romantic suspense genre in plot, narration and characters, exotic locale and circumstances not withstanding. I was reminded a little of Gerald Durrell's animal stories and the anthropomorphic style of writing, which all served to add to my amusement and entertainment for 2 days straight. Throw in a funny, hunky undercover agent and a never-say-die animal dentist and I'm sold.

Diamond Legacy is the first in the Jewel Intrigue series by Monica McCabe. The story and characters pulled me in and I read it through in a very short time. The book has it all, romance, intrigue, great secondary characters, chemistry and some steam along with danger, terrible bad guys and redemption. I really enjoyed the story and look forward to reading more from this author.

I just stumbled upon this book. And I’m glad I did! I enjoyed this book. I liked the exotic setting of Botswana, Africa. And Miranda and Matt were interesting characters. Miranda was an animal dentist, specializing in big game. This led to some funny situations for Miranda. Matt was a special agent on a mission, following the trail of diamonds and guns. This was an exciting adventure and contemporary romance.

Review Copy from the Publisher

Diamond Legacy is the first full length novel by this author as she has published two novellas in anthologies, and in my opinion it’s a successful out of the ordinary romantic suspense.

Miranda is a world renowned veterinarian specialized in dental care. She’s in Botswana for a five weeks mission in an animal reservation, and when she realizes Matt isn’t really a janitor but is investigating a traffic going through the reservation, she’s determined to help him with the ultimate purpose to protect the reservation.

Generally, the romantic suspenses that don’t take place in the USA are for most about drug dealers in South America or fundamentalists in the Middle East. Here we are at the heart of Africa grappling with diamond dealers. Guaranteed change of scenery. I thought that the author did a wonderful job setting the stage and I was taken away by her descriptions. If as a European I frowned on a note about driving on the left “European style”, it was soon forgotten thanks to (among other things) a traditional African wedding scene that I could almost see unfolding for real in front of my eyes.

The plot around the traffic isn’t really heavy, it takes place little by little but shows well the complexity of this traffic in the local life. And I thought the final battle scene would look good on the big screen. I have the impression it’s by the way the author’s strength, this ability to describe realistically an action scene or one about everyday life, as when the heroine must treat the teeth of a female hippopotamus in a bad mood.
There also a lot of humor in Diamond Legacy, in the couple’s repartees, as in their interactions with the main secondary characters, lively and well depicted. Not forgetting Roz, the chimpanzee mascot of the reservation, that brings its touch of levity and made me smile several times.

I really liked our couple of heroes. I found that even if the attraction between them was a bit fast, there was a good sensuality between them during the time when they try to resist to their feelings.
The heroine’s profession is out of the ordinary and I thought her passion for her job appeared through the pages. I also found logical that she tries to resist to her attraction for the hero knowing she must go back to the USA when her mission ends. However I found her to be a bit to reckless, in her desire to save the reservation she almost puts herself in danger several times and I wanted to shake her to get her head straight.
The hero doesn’t want to succumb to his attraction neither because he’s focused on his vengeance. I liked to see him totally powerless in front of the heroine’s obstinate side. I frowned a little when he deliberately makes her drink during the wedding to relax her and more if possible, but I laughed when it finally backfired.

While writing this review I saw that the author plans to finally make a trilogy, and I’ll be there if she follow through with this plan. Meanwhile I can only recommend Diamond Legacy if you’re looking for a change of scenery.

I received this book from NetGalley.

4.5 stars

This book was a pleasant surprise. As a fan of romantic suspense, I started reading Diamond Legacy with no expectations. I was immediately struck by this author's writing. After reading so many books that were sub-par as far as grammar and punctuation, Monica McCabe is superior. Her style is easy to read and understand and, something that is important to me, she lets the characters tell the story. I was immediately drawn into it.

Following in her veterinarian father's footsteps, Miranda Parrish specializes in zoo animals with dental issues. Working at the San Diego zoo, she gets a request to treat a rare albino hippo in a game reserve in Botswana, Africa. Hard pressed to decide on this five-week opportunity or to stay at home with her not-too-exciting fiance, she decides to break her engagement in favor of Africa. Taking her college intern Jason Havrick, they set out on the trip of a lifetime. But no sooner did they arrive at the airport, they not only witness the pursuit of a bad guy by a cop, but she also becomes involved in his apprehension. Matt Bennett is an agent for IDS, or International Diamond Security. Single, handsome and bearing a personal vendetta from the past, the attraction is immediate.

Miranda discovers Matt is working undercover at the game reserve investigating a diamond smuggling operation that has seems to have connections within the reserve. Warlords steal the diamonds, sell them and buy weapons for the civil unrest in other African countries. Matt likes working alone and tries to keep Miranda far away from the danger, but she can't seem to stop trying to help. Aside from this part of the story, the reader gets a view of African customs when Matt takes Miranda to the wedding ceremony of his friends. His passion for Africa is as apparent as his new found love for Miranda.

The secondary characters were enjoyable. I found Jason to be fun and funny. I liked him a lot. I also liked Letta, and Roz was downright hilarious. However, I did have a little trouble getting a vision of these characters as there was not a whole lot of description. The same with who exactly Matt is and his back story. These things were clarified later on in the book, however, but I would have liked to have known a little sooner so I didn't keep wondering. It was a slight distraction for me.

For those who do not like a lot of swear words in their books, this is definitely for you. Although I am not offended by the use of them, there is not a single F-word in the entire book and there are only a few mild words throughout. I really didn't even notice until about halfway through when I expected the character to say something a little more colorful. I would whole-heartedly recommend Diamond Legacy especially for romantic suspense junkies like me. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Fun adventure in Africa, that rolls in your mind like scenes from a movie.
There's lots of entertaining, lively banter between the characters, who are all likable, and amusing. The repartee and joking goes on even in the most intense and dangerous moments, proving amusement through the lighthearted and upbeat tale.
Miranda and Matt has lots of zing between them, the sizzling energy and attraction between them is palpable. Matt is an undercover agent, trying to stop the diamond and gun trafficking, and at the same time look for the man who killed his parents 14 years ago. Miranda, zoologist, was just supposed to focus on the animals, but so much is going on behind the scenes at the park, and her attraction to Matt just keeps pulling her into a dangerous situation after another.
Lots of action, danger and mystery, mixed with laughter, joy, and love, and with brilliant constant bantering (that made me think of Crocodile Dundee) is perfect entertaining on a sunny summer Sunday

I watch Castle, where they done an episode about African Diamonds in season 6. So when I got the chance to read Diamond Legacy, I hopped on the chance to read the book. I just have to say Wow. This book just exceeded my expectation. Even though the book was slow in the beginning, but it started to pick right up when Miranda and Matt meet in Africa.
Matt’s parents murder by arms dealer when he was young was the driving force behind him being in Africa again. Everything was going okay until he meets Miranda Parrish an animal dentist.
Miranda received a notice that a hippo in Botswana had teeth problems, so Miranda always wanted to go to Botswana since she was young. When she arrives to Africa she helps take down a criminal, then she helps cure the hippo. But she doesn’t stop there. She notices that something was off about the new janitor that the sanctuary hired on. She started to follow him and lands in the middle of a blood diamond smuggling operation and only one person could keep her alive.

The books is actually interesting since it deals with the weapon dealers and animal protection and both are very important issues.
The main characters are attractive, sweet couple. However, my favorite character was Jason. He is funny, sweet, sarcastic, dreamer and knows his way around a war field.
Good story, well knitted and good chemistry between Miranda and Matthew.
It's a nice book to spend time with.

I was a bit disappointed by this book. I loved the idea of it and hope to learn more about the protagonists unique career and more information on the actual diamond/arms situation going on in Africa. Instead, this book was an awkward and forced romance novel set to the exotic background of real suffering. I have a hard time even labeling this as a Mystery/thriller in my planner. Never was there really all that mystery and I really wasn’t thrilled. This book kept my firmly planted on the BACK of my seat and I was just waiting for it to end.

So this didn't start off well for me with Miranda already having a boyfriend, which is something I don't really like in a romance novel. Then I wasn't crazy about the meeting between her and Matt; she figures out he's undercover and she wants to be involved in the investigation so she basically threatens to expose him in order to get Matt to agree to let her help. Nope, sorry not a fan.
