I read A Field of Sunflowers and I would use this book in my class to teach facts about sunflowers. I would also focus on the photographs being a feature of non-fiction text.
This was a story that described one farmer's choice to plant a field of sunflowers and as such it details what it takes for him to get the plants to grow. As such the reader will find the book informative both for the sake of farming sunflowers as well as learning more about the process of growing for the flowers themselves.
What I found about the writing that was a bit off was that there were a few pages that may have been moved around a bit more to allow the story to flow more smoothly and that it also had in bold font specific words. Unfortunately there is no glossary in the back to collect those bold words so I am not quite sure what the purpose of that was to begin with.
The text is illustrated with brightly colored photographs of the sunflower plants and the people enjoying the flowers as well.
This would make for a great book to read just before visiting any sunflower farms that may be in your area or if someone who has a green thumb may want to share it with the children in their family/neighborhood.
This book takes you from raw ground, seeds, sprouts, to full grown sunflowers. I liked how the author told the story and it felt more like a story and not just facts. I would use this when introducing a unit on planting and flowers.
