Rating: ALL OF THE STARS!

Gahhh where do I start?! This series just keeps getting better and better! This is my new favorite in the series, and I honestly wouldn't change anything about it. In my eyes, it was absolutely perfect.

I loved the plot in this book! While I thought I wouldn't enjoy it taking place outside of Doon, I actually found it strangely refreshing; I nice change of scenery, and yet after a few chapters I was wanting to go back home to Doon.

The world building is so well done! I can always see everything so clearly in my mind; causing it to feel even more real. Every time I would put the book down I would just long to go back to the magical world of Doon.

I forgot to mention this in my reviews for the other books, but I really love Vee and Kenna's voices. They're so different, which is perfect for the alternating POV's, because it's never hard to know who's speaking.

As always, I loved the Christian messages in this book. While it's there in the first two, I feel as though it was slightly more prominent in this book. I love that these authors aren't afraid to add that aspect into their novels. :)

I love where the story is going! I don't want to spoil anything, but the plot in this book was really thought-provoking and keeps you on the edge of your seat; questioning everything and everyone, which I loved!

I don't know what else to talk about... all I would say is please pick up this series. They are definitely in the competition for my top 5 favorite series of this year. I honestly love them to death, they're so so amazing, and they make me so happy. <3

I’m always a little wary of sequels, especially when I loved the first one (two in this case) so much. Will this one be as good as the last? Will I be disappointed? What if one of my favorite characters dies?

Oh, the agony of a fangirl.

But I shouldn’t have feared when it came to Shades of Doon, the third installment in the Doon series and one of my most anticipated reads of 2015. Not only was I not disappointed, but book three exceeded my expectations, leaving me dangling off the edge of my seat in anticipation of what comes next.

Character arcs are difficult, and I love what Carey Corp and Lorie Langdon have done with Veronica and Mackenna. These girls never fail to impress. I’m always aching to see more well-written girl friendships, in YA books especially. I feel that, at this point, these authors have set the template for what a girl friendship should be. Mackenna and Veronica have their ups and downs. They fight and make-up. But they’re always there for each other, watching each other’s backs through everything. I adore their humorous dialogue. And the best part? These BFFs couldn’t be more opposite, but even so they are two halves of the same whole. If I could hang out with any two literary besties, Vee and Kenna would be my top pick.

Oh and also Jamie. *Swoon*! Can I borrow him for a day, Vee? Pleeeeaaasseeeeee!

Shades of Doon takes place mostly in our world, and this is what I love about urban fantasy. I can relate to and ground myself with the characters because I can picture them. They’re real to me. I also really enjoyed seeing the two princes venture out of Doon and into Modernland. We saw Duncan do this in Destined for Doon, and now it’s Jamie’s turn, and man, does he hold his own. He’s the hero every girl (this one included) dreams of.

From the stellar writing to the relatable characters, Shades of Doon was everything I wanted and more. It was fast paced, and had the perfect blend of romance, action, and mystery. My only complaint? Book 4 isn’t out yet! I NEED to know what happens next. I highly recommend this book, as well as the rest of the Doon series, to lovers of clean, swoony romance, modern fairy tales, and strong female heroines.

Disclosure: I received copies of Shades of Doon for review from the publisher and from BookLookBloggers. I was not asked to write a positive review. All views and opinions are solely and completely my own. I received no compensation other than copies of Shades of Doon, which are mine to keep or gift as I so choose.

****REVIEW OF ARC****

Wow. Carey and Lorie do not disappoint in Shades of Doon. Buckle up your seat belts and get ready for one amazing freaking adventure. 4.5 stars!

After that insane cliff hanger in Destined for Doon I was eager to sink my teeth into Shades as quick as possible!

For anyone that's wondering, this book clears up mostly everything. Most of my questions were answered, save for a few, and I want the next book right now because that ending?

Destroyed me.

This book is filled with a million times more MacCrae swoon then the other two books combined and is the perfect combination of romance, magic, and fun.

I was very proud to see the character development in this book as well as the development in the relationships in the story. In previous books our characters and their relationships with others were a bit underdeveloped before due to their lack of maturity in certain aspects. I was overjoyed to see Veronica become the strong queen I knew she could be. I was proud of Kenna and all her kick butt awesomeness. I LOVED how the romantic relationships in this book were stronger than ever before. They didn't feel like separate people anymore with different, hopes, dreams, and goals.

These couples became a unit in this book.

And with each other they were stronger than ever before.

Get ready to see Addie come back evil was ever and I think Voldermort needs to watch his back, there's a new villain in town.

I really can't say I disliked anything in the book, save for a certain part in the book where they're in the modern world. I expected a little bit more from that scene but overall I suppose what happened was meant to be and I can't argue with that!

The ending left me....breathless.

I was sobbing.

I was angry.

I wanted to throw this book across the room but I was so engrossed I just had to keep turning the pages.

This is seriously, Lorie and Carey's best yet. Unseen plot twists, constant action, swoon worthy romance, and spell binding magic kept my head spinning and my hands flipping pages. You won't want to put this book down!

CANNOT WAIT FOR BOOK FOUR!

It was such a pleasure getting to cross the bridge back home to Doon. I left my heart within the pages of this story and I cannot wait to catch up with my beloved characters for the last ride. Bring on book four people.

I'm ready.

Book 3 and I'm still enjoying the series! I really like the world and characters the authors have created and can't wait until Book #4 next year (the final one of the series). I will admit, I'm partial to MacKenna's character because she's snarky and fun - although Veronica is a likable character as well, she just has more responsibility and therefore is more serious at times. Much like Ari and Janco in my Study books :)

In this book, the evil witch of Doon is attempting to cast Veronica and MacKenna out and back into the real world. The plot moves along at a fast pace and the ending is another cliffhanger (there was one after book 2 as well). One thing I'd like to see more of was

DNF 22%

This is the first book I'm marking as DNF ever. I've stopped reading books before but I always hope to get back to them. But I think I'm done with this one. I read Veronica's book and Mackenna's. They are both happy now. Why mess that up?!

Also I'm not rating the book. I don't think it's fair if I rate it after only reading a fifth of the book.

My Preciousssssss!!

I absolutely LOVE this series, but Shades of Doon is my favourite of the series thus far. The Doon series just seems to be getting better and better with each new installment. The covers also keep getting better and better.

Some of the setting of this book was set outside of Doon. While I didn't mind it, after a while I was really itching to get back into the world of Doon. Doon is such a beautiful, magical, and magnificent place that I want to spend as much time in that world as possible.

World building is top-notch, the writing is amazing, and great character growth. I also love the alternating POVs. Veronica and McKenna's voices are so different and fun to read. I really enjoy reading from both perspectives.

Another thing I love about these books is the wonderful Christian messages woven through each book in this series, but I did notice it was much more prominent in this newest installment. I love that Carey and Lorie aren't afraid to add it to the series.

Basically this book was almost flawless in my opinion and I am eagerly and impatiently awaiting the fourth and final book in this series.

Building an impressive fan base full of readers fully invested in these characters lives, this series has become one of the more popular YA lit re-telling set of novels currently relevant to today’s reader. Its second novel, Destined for Doon, left its fans scrambling for answers and adding Shades of Doon to their most anticipated lists. Now, the third book is nearly here and fans are about to have the answers they longed for. The adventure continues as Veronica recovers from her brush with death and the mysterious circumstances that put her in that perilous situation. With her bestie, Mackenna, by her side, Vee is ready to face anything… except being thrust back to the modern world. Doon is home for her and leaving behind her people, her kingdom… and the man she loves is an impossible possibility neither Vee or Kenna are prepared to ponder.

Mixing two worlds into one unique package takes some skill to co-mingle. Add in the duel authors and two point-of-views shifting between two heroines and you have a story that might not work well. Fortunately, for the reader, that worry is all for naught. Intertwining all of these shifting pieces is in the skilled hands of two great authors. Cary and Lorie deftly and if I’m being honest, kind of wickedly (those cliffhangers… twists… and such *wink*), unravel this journey over the course of what will be four novels to complete the series. This means, there is the dreaded, inevitable cliffhanger leaving us gasping. Without further ado, let me elaborate on some of the reactions you may have while reading and upon finishing this.

“Wait… how did [insert name] get away unscathed?”

“Um, wait a minute… did [insert unnamed character] really just [insert spoiler happening]?"

*goes back to re-read*

"Did that just happen? Please, say noooo!”

Yep, those are just some of the reactions you might have upon closing the last page.

The final two-five chapters are riddled with breath-catching suspense and constant danger for our characters. Though the excitement levels might get your pulses racing, I think the real appeal of this series for me, is the friendship. It’s rare to read a series like this that tells two best friends story in tandem. It’s really their friendship that keeps the story moving along. Yes, there is romance which probably keeps the swooning pulsing for most readers, but for me, it’s the adventure these two girls undertake. It’s their conflicted feelings about “home,” and what it means to feel safe and loved. This novel explores some deeper, more poignant emotions because of Vee and Kenna’s return to their world stateside, and I loved that. There’s more clarity to every decision and thought process they are a part of. Experiencing aspects of their lives is likely to be an emotional whirlwind.

If you’re looking for more than an emotional up and down novel with plenty of adventure, rest assured there is romance by the bucketful. The girl’s both have a fella in Doon and those men are quite the catches. They are fierce, passionate and over-protective Scots, who aren’t about to let anything corrupt their ladies. They’d sooner risk life and limb than let anything wicked destruct the girls or Doon. Speaking of, there is plenty of that going on too! Lots of evil schemes keep the Doonians and Destined on their toes. If you like time-travelling YA lit or books geared towards teens in general, this might be a series to look into. Loosely inspired by the musical Brigadoon (for those who don’t know), within these pages lies a story pattered out of a classic story and molded into something unique. Witchery, swoony fellas and adventure are what you'll discover. Vee and Kenna may be nearing the end of their journey, but they have at least one hard-fought battle to come. Whether or not everyone will come out unscathed, remains an experience we are invited to join September of 2016.

Hold on to your seats fellow Doonians, you're in for an amazing ride once you crack open Shades of Doon! This is the third book in this astounding series, and I must say, my favorite so far! (My first 6 star review of 2015!) Thanks to the wonderful authors Carey & Lorie, I am now totally infatuated with anything and everything Doon! Never thought I'd say this, but... I'm a total fangirl!

If I had to pick two words to describe this book it would be Wonderfully Adventurous! There isn't a dull moment in Kenna & Vee's life, they face many trials and tribulations but one thing stands out during the whole story, never bow down! Now doesn't that sound like the perfect theme?!?

"For the weak who
choose bravery,
the broken who find
their strength,
and the oppressed
who rise up and fight:
Never bow down to your fear."

The plot really surprised me, in a VERY good way! Honestly I don't think I'd change one single thing about this WHOLE book! Perfectly paced, nothing predictable in this story. I'm the type of reader who tries to guess what is 'around the corner' so-to-speak. With Shades of Doon EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING was a complete surprise, and I loved every wonderful second of it!

Shades of Doon has the perfect setting, characters and plot! Now if you've never read Doon or Destined for Doon you are seriously missing out on an awesome setting! Imagine Outlander for young adults! My favorite part of the setting is the fact that Doon is set in Scotland, with the super swoon-worthy MacCrae brothers Jamie and Duncan! I'm not sure what it is, but there's just so much romantic appeal to Scotland!

I want to touch on the POV in this story. Normally I'm not one to care for multiple POV, but Kenna & Vee's voices stand out from one another perfectly. Once again, just another thing I LOVED about this book!

I could go on ALL day gushing about this book, please I beg of you pick up this book, you won't regret it! Oh and since I'm a Doon fangirl and follow Carey & Lorie on social media I have SOME GREAT NEWS... the fourth book will be titled Forever Doon! I believe it will debut in the fall of 2016, I can't wait!

Guys. My heart. I can't even function right now. This book, though. It was amazing. Jamie and Vee really become a unit in this book, and they have some of the sweetest, swooniest, please make adorable babies moments! Of course, Kenna and Duncan are just adorable and cute and sweet and loving and WHY AM I SINGLE. But, it's official. Jamie is my favourite book boyfriend. That being said, I CANT DEAL WITH THIS ENDING.

Besties Veronica Welling and McKenna Reid are back in this exciting continuation of the epic Doon series! Vee faced a harrowing end when we left her in Destined for Doon. Now back in action, she’s unsure of what caused her sudden brush with death in the first place. Nonetheless, Vee and Kenna are determined to make the most of their lives in Doon- Vee by protecting her people and leading alongside her love Jamie, and Kenna by building her future with Duncan and starting a Doonian theatre. But whatever illness befell Vee previously refuses to let go of her, and things go from bad to worse when Vee and Kenna are thrust out of Doon and back into their old, not-so-wonderful lives. The MacCrae brothers come to their rescue, but they soon discover that an old enemy is still in their midst…one who has the power to take everything they hold dear and everyone they love away from them.

Honestly, I have been putting off finishing this book for a very long time (despite itching to find out what happens after book #2) because I knew that when I did I was going to hate the fact that I had to wait to see what happens. It’s kind of a weird habit I have- when I really become attached to a book series/tv show I drag it out as long as possible. Oh, the troubles of a fangirl. *wink* This morning I finally resolved to finish it after binge-watching Once Upon a Time with my little sister last night and being reminded just how enjoyable retellings can be! And I am very glad I did.

Shades of Doon was everything I could’ve hoped for in a continuation- more epic adventure, adorable romance, and breath-taking suspense. Doon was as vividly described as the first two in the series and the story played out like a movie in my head. (Can they please make these books into a tv show or something?!) I liked that Vee and Kenna got equal “time” in this third book, their shifting perspectives and witty friendship felt more natural than ever. Also loved the fact that they were learning to rely on the Protector and discovering their own power within. Vee and Kenna showed a lot of character growth and depth. Another thing I adored was the throwback to their pasts and the mixing of two worlds- after Destined for Doon I felt like there were still things that needed to be resolved from the girls’ old lives (which it was) plus seeing Jamie and Duncan in modern-day time was too much fun! Speaking of Jamie and Duncan… *sigh*. They are some of the best, dreamiest book-heroes out there! Seriously, I think Jamie and Vee might be my OTP. Without saying too much, that mind-blowing, emotional ending had me almost in tears…how could it end like that?! And the fourth and final book doesn’t come out until fall 2016!?! Ahhh!

If you enjoy fantasy, adventure, retellings, or just the YA genre in general- you should definitely be checking out the Doon series. There’s a good reason it has an ever-growing fan base! Action, suspense, magic, adventure, romance, heartbreak…all this and more waits for you in Shades of Doon!

GAH!! Can I just give this every star imaginable please? Something like infinity stars? Is that a thing? Because this book deserves that type of rating!! Everything about this book is perfection, and if you aren't reading this series you need to drop everything and go get the first book so you can join in on the adventure of a lifetime. Every book just gets better and better, and this just might be my favorite thus far. The writing is phenomenal and sweeps you away to the gorgeous world of Doon. Every single word and every single scene is beautifully written, and allows you to see the scenes as if they are playing right in front of you. The world building is even more perfect, and every book reveals another layer to the story. It just gets better and better as you go along!

Vee and Kenna are 2 of the best lead characters. The dual POVs adds so much to this story, and makes it feel more complete. Each girl is very different, and you can easily tell who is talking. It is extremely difficult to have dual POVs and those 2 POVs being both girls. It runs the risk of both girls sounding similar and confusion because of this. But that is definitely not the case here. Ms. Corp and Ms. Langdon do an excellent job at giving each girl a unique voice and personality.

Lastly, I just want to hit on the progression of the story/plot. I am blown away by how far we have come since the first novel. I am really loving the development of the characters and the storyline itself. There are major changes coming (heck, they're already here), and I am greatly looking forward to see what the authors have in store for us next! I wish we didn't have to wait so long for the next book, so for now, I'm going to be waiting....very very patiently. And let me tell you

Hmm. What to say about this book. Half of it was fairy-tale perfect, with the two couples totally in love and happy. In fact, the book pretty much starts off that way. My reaction: "WHAT? The last time I saw these characters, Vee was DYING." But this book skips past all of that drama, and we see what happened only in the memories of the characters. Apparently, it wasn't that big of a deal? Then why the epic cliffhanger in the last book?

Moving on... So the characters were having a picture-perfect life before someone threw a rock into their happily-ever-after in the form of Vee and Kenna randomly transporting to Earth-Earth. The person responsible? - You guessed it, the Witch of Doon. I'm sure the characters would be glad to get rid of her once and for all. The authors used the trip to Earth to allow the characters to tie off some loose ends and grow the characters, which I appreciated very much. As wonderful as the characters are, they still have some growing to do. The four of them grew closer as couples and friends and started to trust the Protector even more. It showed pretty great character development.

That trip of theirs ultimately introduced the characters to the newest problem with the witch, a problem with higher stakes than ever before, smashing into yet another cliffhanger ending. Lorie Langdon and Carie Corp really like those, it seems. They did give us a little hope at the end, though.

When I started this book, I wasn't sure what to expect. Both couples finally got together, so what could possibly happen? I hoped they weren't just going to start fighting and misunderstanding each other and have to go through all those relationship problems again. I was relieved that that wasn't the case. They did have a few bumps in the road, but like any couples that are headed toward marriage, they were growing closer and trusting one another more. I appreciated that very much.

I have some mixed feelings with this book. It didn't quite grab me, and the beginning was annoying. But it was still a pretty good book in other ways, especially the character and romantic development.

5 Stars!

Love, love, love Shades of Doon! Everything I hoped for in the next book and more. The best scenes from this book were definitately when Vee, Mackenna, Jamie and Duncan are in the modern world - I laughed so hard. The ending was intense and the perfect set-up for the final conclusive book, Forever Doon. Have to say, I sort of had my suspicions about the person who turned out to be evil, so that wasn't so much a surprise, but I just love these book so much and can't praise them enough!
Seriously, a definiate recommendation to anyway vaguely interested in Scotland, romances and fun reads! I can't wait to cross the bridge again soon!

I have a lot of thoughts, but I will just say that these authors need to learn that Africa is not a country, even though it is referred to as one at least twice in this book, and that Native Americans are not just people who stand around shooting bows and arrows. Their attempt at adding "diversity" to their book only took the movement back fifty years. Ugh.

My eyes are hurting from rolling them so much, seriously this witch needs to die soon because apparently we have nothing better to do but to wait for her until she makes trouble again, but I have to say this one was slightly better than the previous two
so in this book we find out that there is a curse that is forcing Veronica (MAJOR EYE ROLL ) and Mackenna to be in the modern world away from Doon, they have to return to see what is causing it, and how will they destroy that witch .. again

let's hope the last book ends up good since I'm not having any expectations now

This book had me like
description
But let's get to the review ;) :

The Doon series just keeps getting better. Often by the time I hit the third book in a series, I’m hanging on purely because I’ve already invested time in the characters. This series has officially sunk its claws into me and it’s not letting go.

When I first read that this book takes Mackenna and Veronica (Verrranica) back to their former lives I was both apprehensive and excited. Apprehensive because both of the girls have matured since the first book and it’s easy for characters to slip back into old behaviors and court old fears when faced with their past - which is also why I was excited because it likewise gave our girls the opportunity to grow, not only as individuals but also as people in relationships.

What I find is most striking about the Doon series, and especially in this latest installment is that I feel like Carey Corp and Lorie Langdon have really given us two utterly believable and relatable characters - within a not-entirely-relatable setting. In fact, even our two leading men - Jamie and Duncan - are not without their flaws. Vee and Kenna are not two dimensional, they’re complex within reason (and I say within reason, because I’m not overly fond of characters that are written to be cliche’ and illogical - which Kenna and Vee are not either of). Their personal problems are not insurmountable and their reactions are spot on.

Shades of Doon delivers thoroughly on “I must go back and re-read” moments - especially during the time that Vee, Kenna, Jamie, and Duncan spend in the modern world. It also features plenty of fun and intrigue - let’s just say that you will be left clinging to the edge of your seat/couch/bed. And if you have any lingering questions after Destined for Doon, yes, they do all get answered!

The second book did leave us with a cliffhanger, but this one *spoiler* leaves us with the mother of all cliffhangers! So much so that I’m ridiculously excited for the fourth book (which is slated for release in fall of 2016) - actually I read on Sara Ella’s blog that there will only be four Doon books, which is sort of disappointing because honestly I just can’t get enough of Vee, Kenna, Fergus, Fiona, and the MacCrae brothers!

Guys, I’m entirely engrossed with this story in the best sort of way, pick it up and you will be too!
