About the author

Dr. Osamu Tezuka (手塚治虫) was a Japanese manga artist, animator, producer and medical doctor, although he never practiced medicine. Born in Osaka Prefecture, he is best known as the creator of Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion. He is often credited as the "Father of Anime", and is often considered the Japanese equivalent to Walt Disney, who served as a major inspiration during his formative years. His prolific output, pioneering techniques, and innovative redefinitions of genres earned him such titles as "the father of manga" and "the God of Manga."

warnings: a lot of triggering stuff (including rape and abuse), semi nudity, a macabre theme

this manga is really good and dark!! the only thing i didn’t like was the art, it’s just ugly in my opinion and that’s the first time i’ve ever said that about a manga. but the storyline!! holy fuck! why isn’t this more popular?

mostly spoiler-free summary: basically, it’s set in japan a few years after ww2, and one of the main characters (jiro, who is a dick) is a spy in order to not get killed. ayako, a 4-year old girl, is the daughter of his father (who is an even bigger dick) and his step-sister su’e, who regularly gets raped by the father with her husband’s permission. there’s murder, attempted suicide, rape, child abuse, some more murder, etc etc etc. as you can tell, it’s really dark and fucked up, but also realistic and necessary. these things happen in real life all the time and i don’t come across stories like this a lot. i recommend this.

Franchement bonne découverte ! C´est deep mais en même temps c´est intéressant. En mode chronique historique sur le Japon ( l'après guerre occupation américaine) tout en traitant de sujets familiaux très sensibles. On a un développement de la situation social et politique que pouvait vivre les japonais à cette époque très bien expliquée. Ça pousse à faire ses propres recherches ! En ce qui concerne les "sujets familiaux très sensibles" il faut être prêt. Perso je ne lis jamais de manga et j'étais un peu choquer de la transparence de certaines scènes.

Il est important d´être averti avant la lecture sinon ça reste un peu violent quand même.

Je vais tout de même tenter les deux autres tomes parce que l´intrigue a réussi à m´emporter.
J'attends d´avoir lu en entier les 3 tomes pour recommander le bouquin. (Je mets qd même 3 étoiles sur 5 ).

No sabía que esperar de este manga porque lo compré sin leer ni una reseña, ni tiene una sinopsis en ningún lado, pero estaba decidido a comprar lo que encontrara de Tezuka, así que se vino para casa. La verdad es que al menos esta primera parte me pareció excelente, con una historia muy adulta, llena de crueldad, crudeza, avaricia y hasta incesto. Quien te conoce Game of Thrones.

El arte caricaturesco de Tezuka también toma un tinte más "serio" o quizá la mejor palabra es "realista", que queda muy bien con el tipo de historia.

Tezuka se interna sin concesiones hacia las regiones más oscuras del alma humana y además lo hace interpelando directamente al lector al confrontarlo con las diferentes posiciones que cada uno de los hermanos toma en relación a la situación de Ayako.
Con una narrativa cruda y unos dibujos descarnados, aborda en este primer tomo el arquetipo del niño interior encerrado, de forma similar a cómo Úrsula k Leguin hizo en “Los que se fueron de Omelas”.
Cuanto nos cuesta a todos dejarla salir y cuantas razones encontramos para no actuar...!

Une histoire inscrite au sein de la période de brouillard de l'après-guerre japonais. Ayako a 4 ans et sera victime de cette époque assez sombre, de par les combines de sa famille qui semble prête à tout pour garder son statut.

Difícil para las lecturas que se vienen en el resto del año, ya que el nivel de esta es de 5 estrellas y es que es una historia perfecta, con un guión sin fisuras y un arte evocador.

No voy a contar nada de la trama, porque eso en si es un Spoiler y quisiera que todos llegaran tranquilos y sin saber nada de la historia , solo saber que nos encontraremos con una historia llena de sangra, traición, secretos, miedos, complots a una cantidad y tensión que no te lo vas a creer pagina tras pagina, además de que vas a querer a un personaje como no habías querido a otro en mucho tiempo, mientras que vas a detestar a un par o mas, a un nivel que ni el Dr Doom lograría despúes de llevar a fRanklin Richards al infierno y despellejar a una ex novia y hacerse una armadura con su piel, acá, la sangre y el terror es humanamente real.
El dibujo es precioso, mas allá de unos trazos de dibujo animado, cumple al nivel que debe cumplir siempre,evocando todo lo que quiere decir en su momento Tezuka a un nivel hermoso.

Difficile et graphique. La représentation croisée des luttes d'après-guerre au Japon et de la situation politiquement instable au pays constitue un excellent cadre à cette famille violente et anachronique, qui semble coincée dans une posture réactionnaire alors que tout change autour d'eux.
Cela étant dit, il y a une certaine forme de gratuité, notamment dans la violence imposée aux femmes, dont j'attends la pertinence jusqu'à maintenant. On verra pour les prochains tomes.

This one is incredible. I love Tezuka's works in general but he does not fail to depict all kinds of tabooed in this series "Ayako". It's not the most mainstream works of his, and I would not recommend this one as first manga to read among all the Tezuka's excellent works, but after all this one is one of my favorites.

Inceste, murders and so on, this is one of the darkest manga I read !! A social drama just after the WW2 where the americans imposed their wishes and views (social reform, redundancy plans, strike etc..) to the loosers of the war the japanese.There are 3 volumes to this saga

It's rare that post-WW2 Japan is featured in fiction that reaches the West. They were on the losing side, so the victors pretty much dictated how the country, economic dealings and even the justice system would run. Too bad these characters are so over-the-top they aren't believable. The potential for a proper story is ruined by megalomaniacs, incest and badly-executed spy missions. I don't care how things turn out in the end.

Jiro Tenge returns from the front after 5 years only to find that his family has changed dramatically. They were landowners before a law was passed that had their lands confiscated. Jiro was in a prisoner of war camp. His father Sakuemon feels ashamed his son didn't die for his country, so he didn't put aside for Jiro any of the little land he still owned. But there is something even more shady going on. Jiro meets Ayako whom everyone claims is his sister, but his mother Iba refuses to speak of it. The young girl looks surprisingly like Su'e, his brother Ichiro's wife. And Jiro has his own dark secrets that haunt him.

After confirming with his own eyes that Sakuemon is sleeping with Su'e, Jiro regrets having come home and even becomes paranoid of his own origins and his betrayal of his comrades in the POW camp.

He gets contacted by Kato, a man working for the Counter Intelligence Corps to dispose of a body and make it look like an accident. The target Tadashi is a member of the Democratic Progress Party, a Communist party which is frequented by Naoto as well. The two of them are lovers. Jiro doesn't hesitate to carry out his mission, but is surprised by the backlash. The whole town finds out about it. Then O-Ryo, an intelectually challenged helper at their house, sees him washing Tadashi's blood out of his shirt. He scares her into not talking about it.

Does anyone believe sane people can act the way Chagnon does? He brandishes the gun far too often to intimidate Shimokawa into laying off several thousand employees. Shimokawa later turns up dead, also in an incident with a train.

Sakuemon finds out that Naoko is a member of DPP and promptly disowns her. More shame comes his way when he finds out about Jiro's bloody shirt. Jiro twists the story into something far more shameful involving O-Ryo, convincing his father to not mention the shirt to the police investigating Tadashi's death. Jiro thinks himself safe, but his younger brother, the intelligent Shiro, may still reveal his dealings. It gets worse when the ones who ordered Jiro catch wind of the same shirt. He beats up a the female agent they seem to have sent after him.

Al acabar el primer volumen escribí: El cómic más duro de los que le he leído a Tezuka (no sabría decir si más crítico). El personaje que parece principal, Jiro, carece de escrúpulos para matar, pero siente compasión por la pequeña Ayako. Y su familia, de antiguos señores feudales venidos a menos tras la ocupación americana, clama al cielo. Padre que se acuesta con la nuera cedida por el hijo a cambio de la herencia. Niña encerrada hasta la muerte para que no descubra secretos de familia. Hermano compasivo que se vuelve incestuoso para alegrarle los días a la niña...
Duro, truculento y, lo peor de todo, totalmente creíble. Son tan humanos que no se sabe si dan asco o dan pena.

Una vez rematada la serie, me reitero en la dureza, pero quizá ya no tanto en el realismo. El final en el que toda la familia purga sus pecados sufriendo hasta morir lo que Ayako había sufrido es un poco "de pega". ¿Y por qué se salva la madre vieja, si también había sido consentidora, como todos ellos?
Interesante la visión sobre las mafias japonesas y su relación con la política, y el dibujo, que en las luchas entre clanes mafiosos cambia a pasquines realistas.
Era bueno este hombre, sí señor (la disposición de las viñetas, increíble).

Este manga fue impactante, es impresionante como cada personaje es más deprovado que el anterior. Ninguno es santo (excluyendo a Naoko y Geta)

Pero incluso geta comenzó a tener las actitudes posesivas que tenia Shiro entonces santo no era. Todos estaban enfermos, unos más que otros. El hermano mayor por dar a su esposa, el padre por acostarse y tener mil hijas (hasta oryo era su hija) shiro se acostó con su hermana, la madre nunca decidió intervenir. Jiro al menos no se acostó con ella pero un santo no es, mató a Oryo y provocó que Ayako estuviera encerrada por 22 años solo para él salvarse el pellejo.

Me alegro que las únicas que hayan sobrevivido hayan sido Ayako y la madre de Jiro, las verdaderas victimas de esos enfermos. No creo que Naoko haya tenido que morir pero bueno, cosas que pasan.

Tezuka verdaderamente se lució con este manga, el problema político es muy complejo pero fácil de entender y a pesar de tener solo 19 caps. Es increíble el gran desarrollo que tiene. Un manga impresionante

Voila un premier volume bien intense et violent. On se retrouve projeté dans le japon d’après-guerre, et plus précisément, dans une campagne. C’est vraiment une histoire sombre. Je ne sais pas encore si j’aime ou pas. Presque tous les personnages sont des monstres et n’hésite pas à employer la violence pour parvenir à leurs fins.

(Whole book review) I really enjoyed this but I admit it's pretty dated so idk if that took it out from the experience of reading it since some parts can be really uncomfortable since it’s obviously written by a man lol. Loved the ending, I think all the themes were really put together and I can't really think of any other way to close this series.

Si el comic fuera literatura, Osamu Tezuka sería Shakespeare. En su etapa oscura exploró el lado más sordido de la humanidad en general y de Japón en particular. 'Ayako' cuenta la historia de una familia podrida hasta el tuétano sin ninguna concesión al lector.
