Haunted by a disturbing memory of brutal intolerance, Lonny struggles to deal with being the only gay kid in his school as he suffers daily from the ridicule and taunts of Quarterback Jack Flemming and his group. Condemned even by his own father, Lonny feels alone and cut off, his only solace in the brokenhearted necklace he wears that carries with it the reminder that things could be so much worse. Wanting only to be invisible, and hiding his heart, Lonny is suddenly drawn out of hiding by Paul - the gorgeous new kid at school - who insists that Lonny is the boy of his dreams, the answer to his prayers.
Another series to look forward to. Lonny is seriously bullied at school, and nothing seems to get done about it until one day in English, the new boy called Paul stands up for him against the Jocks and the cheerleaders. Paul suspects that the ringleader, a little s**t named Jack is secretly gay but prefers to do the bullying rather than be bullied himself.
Lonny also has to cope with a mother who doesn't exactly blame him for his father leaving home, but can't seem to give her son the support he needs. Lonny's father left home because as an Athletics coach, he feels undermined and betrayed by his own son being gay, and is on a mission to get his son's gayness changed by the church....yeah, good luck with that!!
Lonny, in the meantime, knows that there is nothing his dad can do to 'change' him, and is also aware that he's been gay since he fell in love with a young boy he met whilst visiting his grandfather in hospital some years ago. They shared a heart-shaped necklace, broken in two and Lonny never takes his half off, but is unaware what happened to the other boy. As his feelings grow for Paul, his saviour, he is understandably nervous that Paul is just playing with him cos it's happened before (Jack), but Paul proves to him that he is serious and as this story ends, Paul is really worried about Lonny's father and what he will do to Lonny once he discovers that Paul and Lonny are 'an item'.
I have a teeny weeny suspicion that I'll need more tissues for the next story. 5 stars from me.
Holy mother of... This book WAS ROUGH! If some of your pet-peeves are bullying and religious parents, be warned, this series had that in SPADES.
So Lonny is a 17 year old guy, he's very small for his age and he is bullied beyond belief. It was so freaking heartbreaking. His main-tormenters are Jack, Tyler and Ash, but nobody at school does anything to help him. At home his mother is a GREAT parent, his dad however is an idiot of the 1st degree. His mother loves Lonny just as he is, and supports him, but after Lonny was outed last year (Jack, Ash and Tyler) his dad moved out, since he BELIEVES that homosexuality is a SIN! (This was really really hard to read.) Nothing in Lonny's life changes until Paul. Paul does not give a FUCK, he stands up to Jack&Gang, he protects Lonny and he brings Lonny out of his shy shell. Lonny carries a necklace that has significant meaning for him, and it helps him every time he is being bullied (both at home and in school). This book is the story of the beginning of Lonny and Paul.
As stated above, this book was quite rough to get through. I really REALLY wanted to take Jack&Gang and leave them naked in the desert with no sunscreen, lathered in honey, as a gift for ants. These characters WERE horrible, their thoughts (we get their POVs as well), their actions and their reasonings were DISGUSTING. And Lonny's father; I wanted to leave him at a feminist retreat with no option for exit for a month, this guy was horrible and unreasonable. *phew* If you start this book, have a stressball ready beside you... And maybe a bottle of wine, or six!
“The Brokenhearted Necklace” pulled me in right away. I could feel Lonny’s misery as he has to deal with the bullies by himself at school and his father who cannot deal with having a gay son.
I wanted Lonny’s mother to be more firm with the father that their son was not going away to become straight, like the father wanted. The fact that the father does not live with them is not fully explained, so she may be afraid to pursue the issue due to being afraid of him. She could have been Lonny’s biggest advocate had she been more determined.
The character of Paul is fearless. I was cheering Paul on when he challenged the bullies in their own games and seeing that he wasn’t afraid of them like Lonny was.
The only thing I did not like about this was the abrupt ending. You are left to draw your own conclusions. I think the way the ending is set up, the only conclusion you can draw is a negative one, but that is my own opinion.
I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.
Cliff hanger multi-part story (maybe 3 parts in total) M/M high school romance. Lonny is having a very difficult time in high school as he is bullied and harassed for being gay by the popular Quarterback Jack Flemming and his entourage. Paul is the new cool kid in town that immediately falls in love with Lonny and tries to seduce him, although Lonny has been burned too many times to believe a new stranger will be kind to him. Anyway, Lonny has enough problems at home with a homophobic father. Nothing much sexual happens, but this is not a 'clean' story because there is so much rejection going on against Lonny. This felt like a possible 'real' story from high school, but I didn't fall into the story telling enough to want to buy any more of the story. 138 pages and kindle freebie 2 stars
I really enjoyed what I read but I had to give it only 3 stars because I hate books that are incomplete and you are forced to spend more money to read the whole thing. Why not just put the whole story into one novel that is 300 pages and charge one time for it.
That really irritates me and to read this only to get to the end and realize I'm left hanging unless I dish out more to finish it is so not cool.
Once again you are captivated by the characters. A.M. Snead has a way of writing a book to the point of no return. I love this story. She has gained another loyal reader for another one of her fantastic series. Can't wait for book 2. Once you start reading you don't want to stop.
No!!! Why did it have to end? Great, now I have to patiently waiting for the second book.
I must say, I really enjoyed this book. Paul and Lonny have amazing chemistry and I look forward to see them grow as a couple. I love Paul and his way of thinking and dealing with the bigotry. I hope Lonny can continue to learn and grow with Paul by his side. Amazing book, great job A.M. Snead!!!
This was a little too over the top for my taste. The characters were more like caricatures - everyone was blown away out of proportion. And there was a lot of crying....a lot. Through the whole book. It also ends on a cliffhanger.
I started this series and wow I was taken into this thinking one thing then I became an emotional mess as this book unfold's, this book is soul touching and really amazing I'm excited to continue on this journey
I enjoyed the book, but not the cliff hanger. Can't wait to read the next book. This book is about a young man's journey to discover who he loves, and how to get it.
This book was so moving and told the story so wel . How people think and act towards people who want to live how they are and not what people think they should be.
