This is the first book I have read by Bette Lee Crosby and I can assure you it won’t be the last. I was expecting the usual sweet and fluffy Christmas story, the no brainer with a happy ever after ending that I read and enjoy at this busy time of the year. What I got was a wonderful story that sucked me in from page one and did not let me go until the last page. There are three stories all intertwined here, not just John and Eleanor’s. John’s daughter is a main focus as well, and Eleanor’s son also has a major role to play, but is not front and centre. Oh, and then there is the hunky veterinarian, pwaar! The pacing of the story is just right; and the plot is more complex as would first appear. The human characters are so well-defined that I felt as though if I went and knocked on the door they would all be there inviting me in to share a cuppa with them and let me cuddle the dog. And then there’s Cupid – how to describe him? Not a traditional cupid by any means – this one is wonderful! He is not described but rather than the traditional fat cherub with wings and a bow and arrow, I imagine a more mature man, a sort of a Dumbledore type, but shorter! His interactions with God and Life Management are very well done with humour, pathos and plain old tenacity in his pleadings. A heart warming tale and one of the best Christmas themed books I have read in a long while. I sort of wish I hadn’t read yet because it would have been a perfect Christmas Eve read – with a glass of red wine, Christmas music and twinkling lights. Oh wait a minute – that’s how I did read it!!!
This book is comfort reading of the highest order – perfect for those times when you just want to get totally wrapped up in someone else’s lives and just relax and enjoy their story. This is the third in the Serendipity series, but it really doesn’t matter if you haven’t read the first two in the series, this is a stand alone story. I had read the first in the series, The Twelfth Child, but not the second and I didn’t feel as if I was missing anything at all.
When Eleanor is seven years old she makes a wish that John will fall in love with her. Cupid hears that wish and promises himself that he will make it happen. However, as Eleanor and John grow older real life intervenes and it seems that their love is not to be. They each marry other people, have children and wind up widowed. Now, perhaps is the ideal time for Cupid to strike but to succeed he is also going to have to deal with John and Eleanor’s children.
The story is told from the perspective of Eleanor and also of Cupid, and I really liked Cupid’s sections – it almost felt as if this cute little wisecracking cherub was sitting on the sofa next to me telling their story as he plans and connives to ensure that Eleanor and John will have a future together. It is a really nice, relaxing easy to read story, jam packed with romance.
I thoroughly enjoyed this read, which is an absolutely perfect stress busting read. Many thanks to the author for the review copy.
Um..having a character named after me! it was a fun read the light humor the characters of John & Eleanor were my favorites
What I didn't like:
sometimes, the narrative got a bit repetitive. I would have liked to know more about the "Life Management" section. I flew through the book & enjoyed it a lot.
This book will be available October 17, 2012. It's a fun Christmas Romance in which Cupid is challenged to give an older couple the love they've been waiting for, a young woman the Mister Wonderful she has always dreamed of, and a lovable lost dog a forever home.
Looking at the cover, I thought the book was about a dog named Cupid. And that was OK. I was up for a happy Christmas story. Christmas is my favorite holiday after all. But just a few pages in, I realized the story is told from the perspective of the main characters, Lindsay, John and Eleanor and of course, Cupid, himself. It is an easy, romantic story, filled with real life scenarios. A young woman who can’t seem to find her soul mate, love between an older couple ( I refrain from elderly because we are not sure how old they are) , a rude and very ill mannered son and then of course Cupid, all trying to make the pieces fit. Even though the story’s name implies a Christmas story, the story itself is not seasonal. It just ends on Christmas with a much needed, for me at least, fairy tale (or Cupid orchestrated) ending. This book was supplied by the author, when I entered a contest to give names to characters in her book. My recently deceased mother’s name Lorraine is used as Aunt Lorraine in the story. It warmed my heart.
Love doesn't just happen. I get my orders from Upstairs, then I proceed to make it happen, or try to.
I have spent centuries dealing with humans, but Lindsay Gray was a puzzle. She was so unpredictable and impulsive. She can't seem to tell love from lust. If I can't help Lindsay, she'll end up being classified as Love-Challenged.
After losing her job and deciding to go home, she was in for a rude awakening. She envisioned home as if nothing had changed, as if time had stood still. She thought her friends and family would all be the same, just waiting for her to come home and pick up where she had left off. When she got home, she realized she never came back because it reminded her of her dead mother and she wanted to avoid any unhappy thoughts. But she soon settled in as if she had never left.
If I didn't create a diversion for her, she would ruin more lives than her own. Cupid thought - dog - distraction.
4 STARS - Would Highly Recommend To Others
Bette Lee Crosby's stories and writing style are of the highest caliber. They grab me from the beginning and don't let go, even after the last sentence is read.
Cute, warm, Christmasy cover. When you near the end of the book, the choice of the cover becomes clear. The title is appropriate. The story is as much about Cupid as it is Lindsay, maybe even more so.
A feel good love story - romance, full of the hills and valleys, highs and lows, roller-coaster ride... that love entails.
Cupid - I loved how he talked about manipulating humans. True love is a lot more subtle than people think, that is why they sometimes miss the moment. Humans thought they actually controlled their lives, but he knew better. All they do is muck it up. It makes you wonder why he cared so much. Even Cupid has faith. I guess he has to?
As he described us and our failings, I would find myself laughing.
Lindsay - so intent on her losses, she couldn't see what was right in front of her. She was so gullible. She was very impulsive and unpredictable. You wanted her to go right, so you could bet your ... she was going to go left. To me she seemed so selfish, that I really didn't like her and never would have spent any time with her. I thought she needed a good slap up side the head. lol Do you think she will change? Is she going to find what she has been looking for?
I loved when Amanda talks to Lindsay and describes Phillip. "Phillip is nothing more than a gift box, gorgeous on the outside, totally empty inside."
I received this book in return for an honest and unbiased review.
What can I say, I love stories about Christmas and this was an adorable story about Cupid and what his job entailed. I was given the privilege of getting an ARC of this book. Bette Lee Crosby has such a wonderful writing style that I jumped at the chance to read it.
This is the story of Cupid working his magic. The main characters all have flaws and Bette tends to bring out the best in them. It is definitely a totally different take on her usual books, which are written with such heartfelt character. Her books are generally books that I think about long after I have finished reading them. This was a book that was cute, fun and definitely a great way to get into the holiday spirit.
When the story began, all I could think was what a spoiled little brat Lindsay was. I loved the development of her character as well as her father and his “girlfriend”, Eleanor. Eleanor’s son, Ray was another character that I was not thrilled with in the beginning. Bette has such a way with weaving a story to make you come to care for each and every character, flaws and all. I really enjoyed reading this book. It will make you frustrated at time, laugh at other times and have some very tender moments. It leaves you rooting for a happy ending.
What is not to love, a Christmas Romance and a dog interwoven in the story. I'm looking forward to more of Cupid's work.
After the gold band has been tossed aside and the wedding vows are in tatters, can a story featuring Cupid help mend a person? With Christmas right around the corner, it seemed like reading such a book might be the equivalent of open-heart surgery without the anesthesia. Well I’m glad to report that after only a few pages into Bette Lee Crosby’s new book I began to smile. Soon I was actually laughing.
From reading Spare Change and The Twelfth Child, I’m familiar with Crosby’s story-telling talent, love of character and language, her delight in complications: it’s all in this book right along with the author’s sense of how life can work sometimes, how there can be miracles. And so as I read I left off brooding and took up cheering Cupid on as he helps a pair of older singles, a hapless young woman, and a stray dog. It’s a story that heals as much through its humor as its wisdom, a story made up of dreams such as we all are made of.
This absolutely delightful Christmas story is told by Cupid, whose sole job in life is matching the correct partners together. He’s been doing it for hundreds of years, thousands maybe, and none have given him the challenge that his current job has!
Thirty years ago, he successfully matched Eleanor and John, but then his dreaded nemesis, Life Management, stepped in and ruined everything. And now, with both Eleanor and John single again, Cupid has managed to get them together, where they are happily re-finding each other. But he has some difficulties to overcome before success is complete, and with Christmas fast approaching, he needs to sort out John’s feisty but disastrous daughter Lindsay. So with some magic, and a gorgeous but unruly dog, plus a couple of miracles….will Christmas be a happy one for all concerned? Or will Life Management get in the way again?
A highly recommended Christmas story for everyone!
NB - this has now been updated and re-released as Wishing for Wonderful.
Originally released as Cupid's Christmas this novella has been revised and republished under the new title Wishing for Wonderful.

This was such a cute little light read! I was able to easily navigate through the story, and kept entertained while doing so. Bette Lee Crosby does such a wonderful job telling a story and keeping a reader interested in the story and characters before them. Just as with every other Crosby book, she provided a wonderful, intriguing story that truly touches and melts ones heart!
I haven't read a book yet that Bette didn't have wonderful, lovable characters to fill her great stories with! Each character is so unique and essential to the story and just makes you feel like you want to get to know them all, even the ones who begin nasty and hateful, you can eventually find yourself growing to love!
Bette has such a talented gift in telling truly touching and wonderful stories, and I am ecstatic to read the Crosby books that I've yet to read, and can't wait to see what else she has in store for us!
This is a light sweet romance, told largely from the perspective of Cupid, that mythical angel of love. The story line revolves around two families, who need serious help in the happily ever after department. John and Eleanor have found one another again, after many years apart. They are anxious to begin their lives together, but their adult(I use the term loosely)children are less than thrilled with that idea.Lindsay, John's daughter, acts like she is the pearl at the center of the universe and is forever seeking Mr. Right. Ray, Eleanor's son, is jaded and angry, believing that his Mom is being taken advantage of by John.It is clear that this assignment will test the limits of Cupid's abilities and patience. The story line was engaging, and the little dog that kept popping up through out the story was an inventive twist.I agree with other reader that this would make a terrific Hallmark Christmas movie.
This is part of the Serendipity series but it can be read as a stand alone, you really don't have to worry if you haven't read the other two, but, it is always nice to read a series in order don't you think?
OK I know its not Christmas, but I just wanted something light to read, something good to read and reliable, I have been reading Bette Lee Crosby's books for a while now so I know I am assured of a few hours of greatness.
This story is about matching the person with the correct partner. Who is doing this? Cupid.
Sometimes there instances which really made me chuckle and some laugh out loud moments where I got sudden looks from my family wondering what I was laughing at.
I would so recommend this book, as they say, Christmas is not just for Christmas, how about Christmas in July.
This author writes from her soul, I am always in for a great read when opening one of her books.
A sweet light romance story. Cupid is a lovable dog whose job it is to match the right people together for a lifetime of love and romance. The story revolves around around two families John and Eleanor have reconnected after many years apart. But their adult children are against it. John's daughter is forever seeking mr right. Ray is Eleanor's son and he believes she is being taken advantage of by John. This assignment will really test cupids patience. A heart warming story with an inventive twist.
I was lucky enough to get to read this book early as Ms. Crosby gave me a link to the book.
What can I say? It's beautifully written which is the hallmark of a Bette Lee Crosby book. Without spoiling anything here, it is written from perspective of an individual that was brilliant in my opinion. It's a wonderful feel-good story that I for one am better for having read it. I definitely recommend this book very highly.
I've read several of Bette's books now and can honestly say that she writes with tremendous heart and soul. "Cupid's Christmas," in particular, is full of warm, happy moments. However, it certainly does not begin that way. This is a great book for the Christmas season or any time of the year. I particularly enjoyed the plot from Cupid's point of view. This book was provided by the author in return for an honest review. Thank you, Bette.
Bette Lee Crosby the author of “Wishing for Wonderful” is an amazing storyteller, and she always vividly describes and writes about her characters and events in her novels. I highly recommend “Wishing for Wonderful” as a heart-warming, witty, fun-loving, and thought-provoking book. The genres for this wonderful book are fiction, fantasy, romance, and there is a magical essence that is in this book, especially for the holiday season, but can be read in any season, The author describes her colorful and dramatic characters as complex and complicated and flawed. One of her characters is quirky and lovable. Did I mention there was also a dog??
I love that Bette uses “Cupid”, a quirky and lovable character, who answers to the man upstairs, as the narrator. This is a book of love for young and older people. I did enjoy the amusing and delightful story. This is an easy to read, uplifting, and memorable story that is so enjoyable. Happy Reading!
I originally decided to read Cupid's Christmas because I am a Bette Lee Crosby fan. Although I have only read two books by author her, she has already become an author whose work I seek out. I had some reservations about this one as it is a romance book, which is not my normal type of book. Although I enjoy a good romantic mystery ala Nora Roberts, I am not much for the "bodice ripper" type of books. This book, however, is a more intellectual romance with the addition of a few heavenly characters and a real down to earth story. As such, it is another winner from this new voice in fiction. I enjoyed this book as much as I did Spare Change, which was the first book that I read by this author. Although Spare Change is not a romance, the two books have a lot in common. Like Spare Change this one is filled with wonderful characters that are so real that it is easy to become invested in their struggles. I found myself definitely rooting for them and for their fledgling relationships. Also similar is the way Bette tells her story from the viewpoints of several of the characters, a writing device that I find that I really like. I am one of those people who loves to look at things from all sides, and am often found playing devil's advocate with my friends, so it is not surprising that stories told from several viewpoints attract me. By far, though, my favorite viewpoint in this book is that of Cupid. I love the voice that Bette gives to this mythical creature. In fact, I loved Cupid so much that I am hoping that Bette intends to make this a series. I would really love to read more about how Cupid interacts with the humans he is trying to match up and battles the powers that is in the guise of the Life Management Department and The Boss. I almost wish that I hadn't read this one yet so that I could still look forward to reading it for the first time again. I have several other books by Bette on my list of to reads and I can't wait to get them read.
I love Betty Lee Crosby’s books so when she approached me to review Cupid’s Christmas it was a no brainer. Cupid’s Christmas delivers a holiday tale that you will want to share with others. It reads like a made for television Hallmark Christmas special and I quickly consumed this on a cold afternoon. This is heartwarming tales that will lift your spirits and embraces the spirit of the holidays.
We meet Cupid who dwells somewhere between Heaven and Earth and whose purpose is to match people with their true loves. This isn’t an easy task, what with human free will and the department of “Life Management” whose sole purpose it seems is to throw a wrench into people’s lives. We meet Lindsay Gray, a difficult case who mixes up love with lust. Add in a second chance romance, a cute dog, a sexy veterinarian and you have the ingredients for a heartwarming tale.
Lindsey Gray is in search of love and happiness and nothing is going her way. Despite Cupid’s interventions she keeps messing things up. When a series of events force her to move back to her New Jersey home she just might get her happily ever-after. Her dad John, his girlfriend Eleanor and her son all have different story lines and I found myself completely caught up in their stories.Cupid was absolutely hilarious and I loved her snarky comments and insight about humans.
Crosby has this incredible gift for bringing you memorable characters and weaving tales that touch you. I love that she is able to capture my attention in the first few pages. Since New Jersey and the areas mentioned were my old stomping grounds I felt right at home. I loved that she mention my favorite sports teams and venues. The dog in the book will capture your heart and I love that part of the proceeds go to helping animal shelters. The pacing is delightful and the characters complex. I found myself giggling aloud, especially during Cupid’s POV. The tale is shared through multiple POV’s adding depth and a personal touch. I found myself highlighting quotes and had tears in my eyes at the end.
If you are in search of a heartwarming tale to get you in the holiday mood, Cupid’s Christmas is the perfect read. I cannot wait to see what this author brings us next.
I want to thank the author for providing this ARC in exchange for my unbiased review. I was absolutely delighted to see my review quoted for Spare Change in this novel and recommend you read it. originally posted at The Sunday Post
Cupid's Christmas is an adorable Christmas romance story about a lovable pooch who is charged with the challenge to match the right people in a relationship meant to last a lifetime. But when life circumstances get in the way and mess up the matches, Cupid is once again called upon to reunite an older couple, while matching a young woman with her prince charming, and finding a lost dog a forever home.
Narrated by Cupid along with alternating points of view by Lindsay, John and Eleanor, author Bette Lee Crosby weaves a warm and fuzzy tale of love, romance, family drama, life circumstances and puppy love. You can't help but be captivated by Cupid's story as he works his magic with a few miracles added in to unite two couples: Lindsay and Matt, and Eleanor and John; while also providing a lovable stray dog a forever home with John's daughter.
This is such a warmhearted story filled with love, humor and a dose of wisdom that is perfect to read during the Christmas holiday season, but it can also be read all year long. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the adorable Bichon Frise on the book cover. As a momma to two rescued Bichon fur babies, I instantly fell in love when I saw the book cover, and knew that I was going to thoroughly enjoy this story, and I was not disappointed!
Cupid's Christmas is one of those lighthearted feel good stories that could easily be a Hallmark Channel movie, I know I would watch it. Cupid and author Bette Lee Crosby has earned two paws up for providing the reader with a delightful story that will simply make you smile!
Disclaimer: I purchased a copy of the book and will provide my honest review in addition to participating in a virtual book tour event hosted by Reading Addiction Blog Tours.
I received this ebook from Bette for review and I am so glad I did. From the beginning it was a little different for me because it is told from the view of Cupid. It took me a couple of chapters to get into the gist of it but after that I couldn't stop until I finished it. It is a story of Linsay who is the cupid' assignment having a long history of finding love. She breaks up with her boyfriend, loses her job in New York, and loses her apartment. She decides to move back to New Jersy to live with her widowed father who she figures is lonely and needs her. Little does she know that her father has found an old love,Eleanor and has rekindled a romance. Lindsay doesn't like Eleanor taking her Mother's place and Eleanor's son ray doesn't like his Mom trying to move on with her life. There is also a dog situated in Lindsay's life via computer that no one can see but her. Lindsay finds another boyfriend when she goes to work for a Veterinary Clinic and things start looking up for her. Lindsay and Eleanor develop a relationship and while shopping one day are both hit by a car gone airborn. This is a very heartwarming story of families and their troubles. Love and all of its twist and turns. A Cupid that doesn't mind stretching the rules when needed. I couldn't leave this story til it was all done. Thanks to Bette for sharing this book with. I loved the ending and think everyone else will too.
Ms. Crosby has such a beautiful way of taking the lives of normal people and turning them into fascinating adventurers. Part of the joy of reading her books is recognizing yourself in the characters.
In this case, Cupid comes along as the narrator, and works hard to straighten out the relationships between a few interrelated characters. As in her other books, the real magic is in the writing. Here is Cupid discussing love:
"...that's the beauty of what I do. I make love unexplainable. Humans fall in love with someone and claim it's because of a special smile, or the crinkle around their lover's eyes, but the truth is they're clueless about the magic that brings such thoughts."
I find myself highlighting more passages in her books than in nearly anything else I read. Often it is just a nice phrasing of simple idea, such as this:
"But you know the funny thing about life is sometimes when you're looking to move away, The God Lord plunks you down in just the right place at the right time."
I also thoroughly enjoyed the antagonism between Cupid and Life Management, which is the "organization" responsible for the bad events in your life. As someone who has experienced the interference of this organization, I found myself cheering on Cupid as he engaged in battle.
If you haven't had the pleasure of reading one of Ms. Crosby's books, there is still time to enjoy this short novel before Christmas is over.
I am so glad I got the chance to read this sweet, clean romance that is perfect for Christmas but honestly perfect for any time of the year. I loved everything about the book. The story was sweet, and it even had a few twists and turns that I did not see coming. The romance was wonderful and not sappy. I loved the fact that Cupid told much of the story, and he is an angel. I liked the references to God, and I enjoyed the humor. And who couldn't love the dog? That is an integral part of the story, and you must read it to understand.
When I say the book is clean, I actually mean it. There might be one or two words that could be classified as mild profanity, but I was honestly not offended. There were no sex scenes--go figure! While the book is not Christian, you will find moral principles and Christian references. I also love the writing style she chooses--telling the story from several different perspectives. She does this expertly--some authors are not at good in this area. The only thing that would make the book better is a sequel. If you are looking for a feel-good, easy-to-read, light romance, this will definitely fit the bill!
I was sent a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
This book not only comes with an adorable cover and a worthy cause for saving dogs from part of it's proceeds, it's also a fanciful love story for the Christmas season and throughout the year.
Cupid's job is to unite the right people for a lifetime of love, but sometimes humans go and jump into lust with the wrong people and problems ensue. Problems also arise when people find another partner in marriage that was not in "the plan". One such couple is Eleanor and John, who found and lost each other as young people. They married other people, each had a child, and now in their fifties they find themselves widow and widower. Cupid has matched them again, but their grown children are causing many problems for this new pair. Cupid must go to work again to make everybody live 'happily ever after', which is Cupid's job designation from the BIG BOSS.
This book has lots of humor, emotion, and hidden great advise about 'real love'. It's a joy to read. Hint---there is a sweet little dog that wins over hearts, with some help from Cupid. If you're looking for a great fun read, this book is definitely for you!
Who doesn't like a book with a happy ending? I read for enjoyment. I read to escape the chaos of day-to-day life. I really enjoyed this book as it allowed me that escape that I needed while delivering the "happily ever after" that I crave. A book about love and overcoming obstacles is what this book is about.
Don't let the title fool you as the book is not really about Christmas, though "Christmas time" does come in more ways than one. This is a great feel-good read no matter what time of the year you read it.
As a dog lover, I especially loved that there is a dog interwoven into the book. While the dog doesn't play a major role in the book, the dog plays a very important role all the same. At the end of the book the author writes the most beautiful tribute to the dog (her own that is pictured on the cover) that will have every dog lover in tears and nodding their heads in complete understanding.
If you are looking for a book to pick you up and help you escape from the mundane day-to-day or you are just looking for a happy ending to help you feel good, I encourage you to read Cupid's Christmas! You won't be sorry!
This book not only comes with an adorable cover and a worthy cause for saving dogs from part of it's proceeds, it's also a fanciful love story for the Christmas season and throughout the year. I got this book free from the author. This is my honest review.

Ms. Crosby has hit a home run with this darling story! Great for Christmas--or any other time. It is a story of hope, second chances, redemption and love. I've not ever read a story before like this, a story not in first person or third person, but with a narrator (Cupid) telling the story. And I loved it! Ms. Crosby has a clean, clear and concise way with words that tells the reader exactly what's going on...no guess work. At times I was empathetic with Lindsay and her insecurities, but at other times I was so fed up with her not seeing what was right before her eyes. This author cleverly wove Lindsay's story with bits of hilarious magic, the up-and-down emotions of her widowed father, a widow lady and her angry son, and a dog search that tied it all up together into a wonderful happy-ever-after for all. What a glorious, satisfying story. I would recommend this to anyone of any age who wants to read a very good story.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were interesting and the plot involves a dog and we get to hear from Cupid himself. "Humans think Valentine's Day is my favorite but it's not, Christmas is. Valentine's Day is a farce, a joke. It's a single day of sharing love - but Christmas, well there's just no measuring the amount of love that stirs up." It was very fitting to read during this season and it really makes you consider what is truly important in life, and that is the ones we love.
This is a sweet little story that is perfect if you want a quick read during the holidays or any time! It gets you into a good mood reading about Cupid, who is a funny little fellow, doing his job with two families who need to be blended into one. A widow and a widower want to marry but their adult kids aren’t happy about this. I especially enjoyed reading about the widower’s daughter and her chance at finding love of her own. It involves a sweet little dog, too!
