Picture a warm summer day, frolicking amongst a blooming field of lilies. Suddenly, you step on a rusty nail. While enduring that, you pivot into some medical waste, then finally wind up on a land mine.
Add to that the flushing of a thousand toilets in unison and you might closely approximate the loss of goodwill for the entire series to date that this volume engenders.
On the plus side, Yori and Himari are both making the most of their limited page time. They are the reason this series went anywhere and I wish it was far more focused on them (I would allow for Aki and Shiho as the side pairing).
There’s a ridiculous chapter where they’re on a date after school and decide to spy on Aki and Shiho to see what’s going on between them and it’s an especially charming diversion that also leads to Shiho letting her walls down a little more afterwards.
I also like that Yori gets given a bit more to do this volume, even as just a senpai giving advice. It leverages the time she’s spent dating Himari too, which is a great way to keep her relevant.
There’s also a series of silent panels presented when somebody calls somebody and the way the art comes together to present a gorgeous moment that’s really heartfelt and meaningful is wonderful. It’s very artistically done.
And it’s done in service to this stupid, stupid idea that Miki savagely rejected Ayaka’s confession last volume because she is in love with Aki. Who is also her sister. There’s that flushing sound.
Incest is annoying enough, but showing up suddenly after no hint of it earlier is practically a bait and switch. There’s no reason for it to be here and it is terrible. I often personally feel when it shows up in yuri spaces that there’s this false equivalency of ‘well, two girls in love is taboo, so sibling love is also taboo in the same way’. That is a lie - one of those is absolutely fine.
There’s even a moment where they could absolutely have walked it back, salvaging literally most of the volume, and choose to double down instead. Yippee. Shoot yourself in the other foot why don’t you?
It sucks because everybody just accepts this as totally reasonable and, no, I am sorry, that’s garbage. I don’t like this series’ yuri paradise atmosphere as a rule, everybody is basically pairing off as quick as possible, but it’s better than this cul-de-sac.
In fact, I gave I’m in Love With the Villainess a lot less crap and it also had incest. But it acknowledged it was a bit weird and, more importantly, spent the rest of its time espousing actual gender identity and sexuality. That took the edge off.
I’m not going to drop this, the implication in the afterward is that this might be tabled for a bit and the next storyline looks like it’ll be back on Yori and Himari. But I will be this savage about a volume that got on my case for 85% of its extended page count.
2 stars - what a stupid, stupid idea. It adds nothing except my considerable consternation. This has been one of the most reliable yuri going and that status been stripped in one fell swoop.
incest??? in my yuri???? it's (sadly) more likely than you think 😭 all i'll say is please, PLEASE let Miki dating Aya be the catalyst to her getting over being in love with her sister 🙏🏻🙏🏻
this volume is saved by Hima and Yori spying on Aki and Shiho's date, honestly the highlight of this weird ass arc and genuinely put a smile on my face. the fact that they immediately got caught... 🫵🏻 loser lesbians i love you
the way Aki didn't even hesitate to confirm they were dating??? THE WAY SHIHO DIDN'T KNOW THEY WERE??? they're comedians AND idiots <3 oh and btw they better deliver on that double date. it will fix me i think
also Shiho at the end of the date 🥺🥺 fake ass idgafer i saw you crying about being your gf's priority

SAY IT WITH ME: INCEST AND WOMEN LOVING WOMEN ARE NOT THE SAME KIND OF TABOO. ONE IS VALID AND BEAUTIFUL, THE OTHER IS A LITERAL ILLNESS. I’m so fucking sick of incest in yuri manga. And I have never been more surprised than when it showed up in one of my favorites. Two stars instead of one only because Yori and Himari spying on Aki and Shiho was hilarious and adorable, and I did love seeing Yori give advice based on her relationship with Yori. I just wish so badly the incest was not the major focus of this volume. I hope we move on quickly from it in the next volume and focus more on our two main couples.
okay, i thought miki was uncomfortable because people encouraged aya (who has a crush on her) to confess without thinking about whether miki even likes aya back, but it turns out it was way worse and miki is in love with her own sister… what the hell. ruining a good manga with incest, seriously. and on top of that they have momoka advising miki, saying it’s okay to love someone even if it’s not reciprocal. no!! the best part was himari and yori watching aki’s date with shiho. i thought miki was falling for aya, but then she cries and confesses to aya that she’s in love with her sister, AND THE POOR GIRL STILL SUPPORTS HER AND TELLS HER TO CONFESS. FOR GOD’S SAKE NO!!! and there was even an implication that aki got jealous of her sister, jesus christ no no no!!

This was awful. I hate the incest plot so much. There was really a moment where it seemed like the story was going in the direction of you DO love your sister but that love is different than what you would feel for a romantic partner. Then you turn the page and instead it’s like nah we’re doubling down. Miki loves her sister (romantically). I also haaaate Ayaka just being like that’s totally fine and being like ‘in fact you should confess!’ Like?? No? The art is really beautiful.
My girlfriend dropped Whisper at vol 3. I’m 11 volumes deep at this point. What am I supposed to do?!!
hey, uh… why the fuck is she in love with her sister? what narrative purpose does that serve that having her be into literally anyone else wouldn’t also serve?
the bit where himari and yori were “spying” on aki and shiho but get caught almost immediately is the only thing keeping this volume from being rated one star
God dammit!! Why does yuri have a obsession with randomly inserting incest! I loved the chapter with Aki and shiho, but oh my god I can’t handle this. Why why why..ugh I just hope we get away from this next vol
the incest was as big no and everybody supporting it??? so random, Yori and hima saving this as usual. Also like this manga literally had such good storylines but incest????
