I stood in the clearing in the heart of the woods where the stars looked down upon the night. Head tilted back toward the darkened sky, eyes closed, I listened. The woods bordered my house—all one-hundred and thirty-something acres. Every little sound, every gurgle, rustle, bustle, buzz, hiss, peep, screech, hoot, cry, creak, crack or croak, I knew well. Harvest came every third Friday of the month. On that night, regardless of the weather, I carried the leather pouch into the woods to collect my mother’s specimens.
I had done this for as long as I could remember.
In the life of Bug Martin there are three things that are for certain. One, the third Friday of each month, also known as harvest night, she is forced to go into the woods alone to collect her mother’s shopping list of weirdness. Two, her mother’s less than sound mental state. And finally, the fact that Bug feels like an outsider both at home and at school.
In her somewhat problematic, repetitive, lonely existence Bug has very little knowledge of her heritage…actually her memories in general are vague. Bug’s world seems to revolve around marking yet another day off her calendar and carrying on with her daily routine—the one true thing that she’s still in control of.
However, just when Bug begins to question the circumstances that surround each harvest night, she is confronted with a blast from the past. Her old nemesis, Tobias Keogh, the boy who accused her mother of being a witch in front of their sixth grade class, has returned home. His reappearance brings two revelations into the light: one, that his memories don’t mesh with hers and two, that he knows far too much about her.
In the process of questioning things and trying to come to terms with Tobias’s homecoming, Bug’s eyes are opened not only to new possibilities but to a whole new world…one that she never even knew she was a part of.
When it seemed like I was only an F away from flunking out of the sixth grade, a retired schoolteacher took me under her wing. After some tutoring and testing, she informed my parents that the reason I was having trouble in school wasn’t that I was dumb but instead dyslexic. When my stepfather heard this, he decided to take me to a used bookstore with the belief that the best way to improve my reading skills was to read. Some of the books were hard to get through at first, but with his encouragement, I refused to give up. We made many trips to that bookstore, and I especially loved the science fiction and fantasy sections. Then one day, after complaining about the ending of a particular book, my stepfather told me that if I didn’t like the books that I had been reading, then to write one myself—so I did.
My first attempt resulted in a horribly written western when I was fourteen, staring a cocky gun-slinging cowboy by the name Curt Calhoun. Curt along with his seven brothers, who all shared C names in common, may never have seen the pages of a book, but that was the day I started writing, and never stopped.
Shawn Reilly lives in Mt. Comfort Indiana. She has three beautiful and talented daughters, one very loving and supportive husband, and an overweight American Pitt Bull Terrier named Noah. When she’s not writing she’s spending time with her family, boating and fishing, and attending signings. She is the author of The Union series and The Children of the Alliance Trilogy. She supports those with Lupus, Fibromyalgia, and animal rescue.
I have read all of Shawn Reilly’s books and have loved them all so I knew that this book would not let me down! I've never read another book quite like Bug. Just the line on the front cover grabs you and makes you want to read more.
Bug is a young girl with a very strange home life. Her mom seems crazy and her dad is dead, she never met him. She has no friends at school; in fact everyone makes fun of her but there is no reason why. She also has to go into the woods around her home once a month to collect things for her mom. The more you read, the more you can’t put it down! I enjoyed this book a lot and can’t wait for more! Definitely 5 stars!

Shawn's books are always an adventure. Her writing draws you in and transports you to another world. Bug does just that. It's an engrossing tale that leaves you wanting more. I highly recommend this book as well as the rest of the trilogy.
Captivating story, variety of characters, good plot
The intricate intertwining characters come together to create a new look at the lives of witches and familiars it is a very interesting take on how things are and the problems they face. I normally wouldn't have chosen this book or series because that's not the genre I normally read; but I read the six books in the union series by Shawn Reilly so I tried this one. I loved the story and can't wait to start book 2 I've already purchased two and three so I'll be ready to finish the series. I can't wait to start book 2 tomorrow. I'd recommend to anyone who likes a very good story with turns and twists it's hard to put down and draws you in.
