Florine Stettheimer: A Life in Art

Rate this book
Painter, poet and salonista, Florine Stettheimer (1871-1944) only had one solo exhibition (1916) in her lifetime, though her work is seen today in international museums. Florine and her sisters, Carrie and Etta, were beloved eccentrics. She's best known for designing the sets & costumes for the Gertrude Stein-Virgil Thomson opera, "Four Saints in Three Acts."

Film critic Parker Tyler on the Stett sisters ? This expensif book is an oddity to showcase Tyler. We know the Stett sisters were wonderful eccentrics and Florine a valued artist. Tyler adds little in this commissioned effort. No bio, no nothing. Only a brief intro by Carl Van Vechten makes sense. Half the painting pix are b&w, which makes no sense.

Says CVV: "Florine was a completely self-centered and dedicated person. She did not inspire love, or affection, or even warm friendship, but she did elicit interest, respect, admiration, and enthusiasm for her work in art."
