This remains a light hearted and fun series. There are some great characters and the paranormal aspect is entertaining. I would give this a 3.5 stars if I could but I will round up to 4 stars.

I would give it more than 5 stars if I could!!! This is the best book yet in the series!!! Just wonderful!!
Violet and Doc are so fantastic in this book, you can really see the growth of the relationship and the growth in their personal lives too.
I am not going to give anything way, but I will say that there are places you will not only laugh out loud, but keep chuckling about way after you are done.
This is a must read, you will love it.

This was book 5 in the
"Deadwood"
series. Violet and the gang are back at it in Deadwood. In this book we have Rex her ex showing up at her office he is the twins father he wants something. In this book we me a new character Hawk. Violet stumbles over a dead body while doing her thing around town and all hell breaks out. While chasing ghost her life is falling apart and her family and friends rally around her. Her relationship with Doc is progessing and he is getting to know the kids. We also see that Cooper and Sparky and all of there back and fourth. I love all of the kooky characters in this series. I really like the way Ms. Charles writes and the narrator was good. I am looking forward to listening to the next book in this series.

This series is quirky - Violet is quirky. Sometimes I like her and her spunk and sometimes I am so frustrated with how often she buries her head in the sand and lives in the land of denial.
Her relationship with Doc is also frustrating, I thought there would be more progress by book 5. I like Doc and think he needs more depth, right now he just seems like a faded out sidekick - although we do find out some more in this book I still need more.
Here kids are great and more interaction there would be nice as well - since motherhood is a large part of who she is
By far my favorite character is Harvey and am looking forward to finding out what's happening on his property.
Besides my complaining I did enjoy these books (1-5), there was something that kept me coming back for more. I will continue reading them and hope for character and relationship growth.

“An Ex to Grind in Deadwood” is Ann Charles’ latest book on the wild and crazy activities in Deadwood, Arizona. This fast moving humorous mystery key protagonist, Violet Parker is a single mother raising two children. She is a Realtor for Calamity Jane Realty and she finds many life threatening issues developing at those listed properties of hers she thinks are haunted. Charles provides her readers with Violet’s back story including all of the unique situations of the first four books.
Readers will find several support protagonists - some are friends and working associates of Violet and the other support characters come from the paranormal world or as “Doc” calls them - ghosts. All of the support protagonists have well developed back stories. The key support characters are “Doc”, a financial adviser and is Violet’s lover, Old Man Willis Harvey, Violet’s body guard, Violet’s best friend Natalie, Violet’s Aunt Zoe, and detective Cooper. There are all sorts of humorous characters and some antagonists who add to the chaos that Charles weaves throughout this suspense filled mystery.
The plot continues to develop around Violet’s life and how she deals with work, murder, family issues, and ongoing problems with Violet’s estranged family and ex-boyfriends. Violet’s biggest problem are those coming out of the information she finds as she and “Doc” talk with ghosts who live in properties she has listed. They share in the formation on murders past and present. Violet has to find a way to pass her ghost stories on to Detective Cooper and keep him from throwing her into the jail for being involved in the murders.
Violet is working hard to manage her life and raise her children when people from the past keep adding issues and concerns challenging Violet at every turn. Her sister and ex-boyfriend upset Violet’s day-to-day life. Charles' well-developed story never slows down and she is always helping readers understand to expect the unexpected.Violet’s Aunt Zoe provides her moral support as well as a home to raise her two children. In Charles’ new book we see a new side of Aunt Zoe adding to the plot’s chaos with her strange antics and her connection to the paranormal world.
This murder mystery is filled with action and twist and turns that will appeal to Charles’ readers. I enjoy how Charles adds intrigue and surprises throughout the story, never giving her readers a hint as what is going to happen next.

This one was better than the last book, slightly :). Violet finally closed on a property 😃😃, more supernatural happenings are piling up in her life, and then the scumbag ex comes bag into the picture. Violet are Doc are still navigating their relationship but her constant internal whining is irritating. However, she’s come clean about Rex and that does help with the situation. In the meantime, more murders, more ghosts, more seances, and finally more clues and what Violet herself may be.

I was lucky enough to have been chosen to be a beta reader for this lastest book in Ann Charles Deadwood series. This is the best one yet! If you haven't read this series, START NOW! you will not regret it!

4.5 Stars... A cryptic phone call sets off a string of dangerous events that leaves Violet and her family at risk... Add to that the return of the exes and a "Realty Paranormal" reality show and Violet has her hands full... One positive amongst the chaos is the growing connection with Doc Nyce and the role he plays in the protection of those she loves most... Violet's life has been anything but normal from the moment she entered Deadwood; as the mysteries unfold she may discover the truth to her legacy and then her life will never be the same... I am enjoying the growth we are finally seeing in Violet and the choices she makes; secrets are revealed and fears are confronted letting readers settle a bit more into these characters and watch the relationships unfold... A unique and engaging paranormal read that keeps getting better with each book in the series:)

"Oh my molies!"
I can't believe I am going to have to wait until the next instalment of the Deadwood mystery series to see what happens next!
This book, the fifth in the series, has it all: mystery, hilarity, paranormal "happenstances", spine tingling horror, romance, the characters we know and love (and hate in some cases: I'm looking at you, Ray...), as well as new fascinating characters, and, of course, the usual chaos that is the norm of Violet's life.
Reading this book had me running the full gamut of emotions. One minute I was so frightened I was reading the book through my fingers over my face, and a little later I'd be laughing so hard I'd nearly pee my pants!
I'm especially interested in figuring out the mystery surrounding Violet's family. Can't wait to read more!
Ann Charles is obviously a cruel and heartless person to make us cool our jets, waiting with breathless anticipation for more from Deadwood! (Just kidding, she seems lovely, really.)
Write quickly, Ms. Charles, quickly...

This cozy mystery series set in Deadwood, SD has become my guilty pleasure read. I see all the things that bug me about some series books - a Mary Sue heroine, repetitive dialog/situations, and ridiculous plots- but I'm still enjoying reading these in the most ridiculous way. Don't start with this one, though. If you don't already know what these books are about, I don't think it will make sense.
Warning: This is the first book of the series to have no ending. Not a cliffhanger, per se, but seriously no ending. Book 5 is more of a part 1 to book 6 than a complete book. Each prior book ends with some sequel bait but only after completing the primary plot arc. This one doesn't complete the arc and just ends mid-plot. I'll have to read book 6 to finish the story, so any review I write feels incomplete until that happens.

Oh yes, Violet is back and is up to the top of her purple boots in trouble again! With everything swirling around her, Coop snarling at her heals and Doc at her side, this fast paced book takes to unexpected places. Jump on and enjoy the ride because this is a fun, sexy ride! Great job Ann Charles!

I love these characters and the way they interact! I am already antsy for the next one. I will not give any spoilers but we learn even more about the things left hanging in the last book with the albinos and family and well relationships.

More of a cliff hanger than most. I'm looking forward to book 6 but I'm thinking it's time to resolve some these story lines. There is such a thing as dragging it out so much that people lose interest.

Just when Violet thinks things have settled down for her, she stumbles upon another dead body that seems to have a connection to her young son, the local detective still thinks she is trouble, another detective shows up and doesn't seem to like her much, either, and to top off all the negative things happening to her, her ex shows up, he who fathered her children but then slept with her sister and waived any parental rights to the twins so he would have no responsibility. It is a good thing she has her true-blue boyfriend Doc to protect her, both from the living beings out to get her as well as the ones from beyond the grave.

Love the gang. The humor makes me giggle. But...HOW in the heck does Violet go days without explaining or asking serious, pressing questions. Like, your Aunt drops tidbits of mysterious information your way and you "don't have time" to follow up or find out more information because of kids and work and "stuff". Bahhh. Violet makes me wanna shake her shoulders violently sometimes.

Through the books, readers have been wondering how Violet is able to do what she does, experience the spooky and come through. Finally, we are getting some answers but not all. Things are coming together to give the reader more information and more meat on the bones of the stories in the series.
Because this is a series, the book ended on a cliffhanger and to be honest I wanted to start the next book right away (so I did).
Several new characters made an appearance in this installment of Deadwood Mysteries that warrant a mention. First is Freesia, who Violet had an immediate connection with as the owner of a rooming house and possible client. Second, I should mention Stone Hawk (what a moniker huh?) who is a smarmy law enforcement officer who has a not-so-great history with Coop. Lastly we meet Violet's sperm donor who elicits an immediate reaction of revulsion and wondering WTH Violet was thinking in the first place.
Violet's children play a part in this storyline but it's more peripheral than other books so far. Something tells me that won't be the case for long as a picture of Violet's son is found in a murder victim’s home.
I love this series! Each book gets better and better. Every plotline is fresh and exciting. Filled with ghosts, demons, murders and other unexplainable phenomenon, every book so far in this series surpassed the previous one.
Recommend?
I recommend this series of books to everyone....I will admit I have become a bit of a fan-girl for Ms. Charles' characters and this series.

I'm really enjoying the Deadwood series!! Violet is in the thick of it again. The romance with Doc is hot, and Detective Cooper is starting to grow on me. Headed to #6 now. Can't wait!

An Ex to Grind in Deadwood bk 5 [Deadwood series]
This is a Paranormal Romance series following the same couple and their group of friends.. You see how much the hero watches out for the heroine and how all their friends look out for each other..
There is a lot more twists and turns in this book that will keep you on the edge of your seat and you will not want to put the book until you finish the last chapter.. Also this is the book that Violets Aunt Zoe tells her about their family history with Non Human bad guys..
The author has put the right characters together throughout this series and i hope it stays that way.. The relationship i like and love in the book is Doc and Violets relationship and i hope they stay together..
Ann Charles does amazing job putting this book together with all the mystery, murder and romance in one book is amazing.. I love her deadwood series and i can't wait to read more in the series.. You can see how much work and detail the author has put in her deadwood series and i am so happy to have them because they are the best mystery books i have read and the details in each book are amazing because it really makes you love the mystery, the plot lines, the characters and the romance and i like how she puts real facts throughout her books..

I hate rex's character so much because he is a ass and thinks he can get anything he wants just by clicking his fingers and also i did not like the way he was treating violet since he was the one that hurt her all them years ago.. I was so glad that doc and cooper are looking out for violet a lot more now that they know rex is in town and i was so happy to see that Doc saves violet from Rex outside her workplace and it was also awesome because cooper showed up to help out.. It was also good to see Doc coming to help Violet when he finds Rex inside her workplace trying to hurt violet..

I have absolutely loved this series since I first discovered the first book “Nearly Departed In Deadwood” a few years ago and I eagerly await each new one…devouring it in too short a time because I can NEVER stop reading until I have finished it! An Ex To Grind In Deadwood was no different! I started reading it as soon as it was downloaded to my Kindle shortly after the book was released and away I went…back to the wonderful town called Deadwood, South Dakota where we once again find our crazy and whacky friend Violet and her loveable family and friends. From the handsome Detective Cooper or Coop as he is called, who is once again investigating another mysterious murder to the eccentric Cornelius Curion…the “Ghost Whisperer”….yes….each and every one of them that we have come to love so much are here!
If you are a follower of this series then you will not want to miss this added addition to it! It is filled with everything that someone looking for a good read wants! It has mystery…murder…a little romance (yep Doc and Violet manage to sneak in a little loving)…and a whole lot of laughs! This had me laughing out loud so many times my family was questioning my sanity!
I cannot say enough how much I enjoy Ann Charles story telling! While reading I can picture the town, people, buildings and action so vividly in my mind because of the descriptions she paints with her words and I am so happy that I discovered her books and always look forward to reading her wonderful stories.
I definitely recommend this story and series to anyone wanting to escape into a wonderful world where you will be thoroughly entertained and meet some new “friends” and have a few laughs!

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is book 5 in the Deadwood series, and a fantastic continuation of the previous books. In my opinion, it is the best so far!
Violet is trying to stay out of trouble, but trouble always seems to come calling and literally this time. A dead body turns up and Violet and the gang embark on another hilarious ghost adventure! Of course, Detective Cooper is not too thrilled about her connection to another death and having his former partner in town to investigate isn't helping.
The spooky Abe is back to help conduct a seance. I must say that scene was incredible! I was so drawn in by the whole encounter, it was just amazing! Violet's "gift" is explored a little more, but not enough to let us in on the big picture. I feel the author is on the verge of revealing something big and can't wait to read the next installment.
I love the interaction between all of the characters. The dialogue is witty, snarky and just plain funny! I laughed so much reading this book. I definitely recommend checking this one out!

This was the first in the Deadwood series I've read, and probably should have started at the beginning. Having heard praise for Ann Charles and read her first book in the Dig Site Mystery series, which I enjoyed, this book was disappointing. The constant inner dialogue in which Violet self-obsesses about nearly every detail in her life, juxtaposed with the often tedious outer dialogue between characters, left me yearning for some nice descriptive paragraphs. Too much detail bogged the story down, and references to prior events left me without context. There were often snappy, clever or humorous comments - "Last night's train wreck backed over me, leaving deep grooves" - that earned chuckles, but the main character's immaturity, sex obsession, knee-jerk hostility to law enforcement, and all the unresolved relationships and murders left me cold. The non-ending with everything up in the air was unsatisfactory.

This is an extraordinarily well written and entertaining story! This book is the best in the series! They keep getting better and better! I laughed out loud so many times during Violet's adventurous murder mystery and never knew what to expect or what was coming up next! The new characters fit very well into the story and I especially liked the interaction between Violet and Stone Hawke. I enjoy the way aunt Zoe's secrets are slowly revealed throughout the series!

Fantastic 5th Book in the Deadwood Series, you can't help but love Violet and all the trouble that finds her!!
I like to write reviews but I like to keep them simple and not tell you the whole story in my review…so here it is, would I tell my two best friends to read this book yes or no…YES, I would most definitely tell them to read An Ex to Grind in Deadwood!
I read over 100 books in 2013, from Bikers, Military Ops and Serial Killers to Shifters, Vamps and Fairies…I don’t discriminate as long as there is a sexiness, mystery and a story line that keeps me up past my bedtime! I’ll try anything!

I enjoy this series very much. Set in the small town of Deadwood, a town with many ghosts and haunted buildings, the main character, Violet Parker, is a realtor with Calamity Jane Realty. Her clients sell or buy haunted houses at a rate of at least one per book. I like the characters. This is lightweight, escapist fiction, but is very engaging and good for distracting oneself from whatever real life may be throwing at you. If you haven't read the earlier books, start with Nearly Departed in Deadwood.

As much as I love the Deadwood series, this one didn't do it for me. It's a filler book. More day to day life, and in Violet's world that's crazy on its own, than anything else. The best part of the book is probably the last 50 pages where things get interesting. As soon as you settle in to find out more, *boom* end of book. Wha? But, but, but.... Nope. Sorry faithful reader. Everybody gets a cliffhanger today including the characters!

There are very few Mystery writers that can make me laugh out loud, but Ann Charles has that knack. I just love the characters in her books. The interaction between the characters are just hilarious. The first time I started to read an Ann Charles book which was Nearly Departed in Deadwood (Book 1) when reading the first page I thought I don't think I'm going to like this, an old man standing on his porch with a shotgun. Well I was very much mistaken by the third page I was hooked. I have read every book in the Deadwood series, all the books in the Jackrabbit Junction series and all her short stories please keep going Ann Charles, waiting for the next.
