“The dead of night is where we belong.”

This was an okay story, but it wasn’t for me.
I don’t know why but I didn’t really enjoy this book, we got a bit of action and a bit of drama, but I just found that this book didn’t hold my attention, and I didn’t feel anything for any of the characters. I think this was probably just a case of wrong person, wrong book, but it was missing something for me, and I was pleased that it ended early.

Thank you so much to Fire Quill Publishing via netgalley for sending me a copy of Dead of Night by Caryle Labuschagne .

I really enjoyed the main character Opel, i think her quiet vulnerability made her more realistic. I also thought ot was interesting to have her not have any memories. That was unique, but it made her confused but also made me confused at times.

It is a dystopian and i thought the world was well done, the characters were developed, but the story itself didnt keept my attention.

It wasnt what i was expecting, from the description i thought it would be filled with action and drama but it was slowly paced with little action and not much drama.
Also the plot of the story was rushed, i would finally start getting into the story and something new would happen and i had to refigure out what was happening.

(I received a copy from Netgalley, In exchange for an honest review.)

I just couldn't get interested in this one unfortunately, so I spent the majority of the book bored. It dragged quite badly for me because of it, and I was quite glad when it was over.

Overall, Not an enjoyable read for me.

Despite Dead of Night’s fast pace and intriguing premise, I struggled to lose myself in its story. Several factors just didn’t work for me, mainly the lack of character depth and the seemingly sporadic plot. I felt overwhelmed by confusion for most of the time, but in those few moments of clarity my frustration at the characters, none of whom I could remotely relate to, was stifling.

Overall, I think the presiding reason I couldn’t enjoy Dead of Night was because the storyline was flat, but fast. By that, I mean that the author had very obviously sacrificed important character-building scenes and subtle tension manipulation in favor of a lightning-fast pace. Unfortunately, this meant that any attempt at reaching a climax fell hopelessly short, because there were no slower, relaxed scenes to contrast the snappy, intense ones. Additionally, he characters didn’t have those slow scenes to communicate their emotions to the reader, and as a result they seemed distant and two-dimensional. Everything suffered as a result of this, and it became increasingly difficult to keep up my energy and spirits as the author threw event after event, plot twist after plot twist, at my head.

One thing I will congratulate the author on is her beautiful writing style. There were moments when her words became pieces of art on the page, and I think the reason I kept reading was in the hope of stumbling onto those passages every now and again.

I was really excited when I first heard about this book! It sounded like an awesome dystopian book! The cover was then revealed, which totally made me want the book even more! I mean, the cover is just amazing! I've also met the author at a Book Convention, but had yet to read any of her books, so when I was offered an ARC of this one, I jumped at it! While I enjoyed this book, I had a few problems with it too! Well, one minor problem with the plot! The plot of this book developed at such a rapid pace! I mean, I was getting into a scene and then something would happen and the plot would develop even further! I even had to re-read a few scenes they moved that fast lol! That's the only problem I had with this book though! Apart from that, I loved the plot and it really intrigued me and left me desperate to read on and see how things were going to develop! I also loved the unique dystopian concept to this book too! I don't think I've read a book with the same concept before! It was executed brilliantly too! I overall really enjoyed the plot and the direction it went in! The characters were awesome! Opel was the main female character and she was quite vulnerable in this book! She was also a really confused character because she couldn't remember any of her memories! I did feel sorry for her, but Opel became such a strong person as this book progressed! I just loved her! She put herself in danger to protect and save the ones she loved! That showed me how far she had come in such a short time! I also loved her relationship with her love interest, Aecker! I could see that she had feelings for him and that she would do anything to save him! I just loved Opel and I can't wait to see her develop in the next book! Aecker was the main male character and he was so hot! I loved Aecker's determination and persistence in this book! He never once gave up on Opel, and that told me a lot about the kind of guy he was! Aecker also put himself in danger to save the ones he loved! He kept his wits about him in this book too and I could see that he would do anything to protect Opel from danger! I would say that Aecker went through the most in this book, which made me feel really sorry for him! I really wanted him to catch a break and be able to spend some downtime with Opel! Their relationship was dangerous as soon as it started though, so I understood why Aecker went through a lot! I was really happy when I discovered that this book was going to be written from both Opel and Aecker's point of views! It made this book even better and it was really interesting to go inside both characters heads! It also helped me connect with them more too! I'll definitely be reading the next book in this series, even though I had a few minor problems with the plot of this book! I can't wait to read it and see where the story's going to go next! The ending of this book also left it at the perfect place! It left me intrigued as to what's going to happen in the next book! The cover for this book is just amazing! I was blown away when I first saw it because of how unique it is! It drew me right to this book too! Big thank you to Carlyle for an ARC of Dead of Night!

Over the past couple of years, I’ve found that my favorite genre is dystopia. I couldn’t be bothered with a romance novel. To my dismay, I found myself loving every moment of this unusual take on love in a world where love itself is a crime. From the very beginning, I found myself captivated with the story of Opel and Aecker.

Having been a big reader of dystopia, I know how this genre has swelled over the past few years and has found itself being written into near exhaustion. This author has breathed new life into the genre and taken a unique and fresh approach which is both mesmerizing and completely satisfying. Love is universal, take that away and what happens? This story exams that and more.

There are so many layers to this story; loss, hope, betrayal, frustration and so much more. The choices of the characters lead them through many difficult situations. The action and the character reactions kept the story moving along. There were times where the story seemed to have a bit of a lull or feel a bit too much, but the author eventually moved it back into the direction needed before it got to distracting.

I recommend this book to all lovers of the dystopia genre, especially those that are looking for something a bit more close to the heart. I look forward to reading further in this series and from the author, herself.

I am a little on the fence with this book. I wanted to love it but I felt I missing something in this book sometimes. I think I needed a little more backstory with some parts of the book. I wanted this book to grab me and hold me and tell me the story but I felt let down. I didn't connect with this book as I had hoped I would. *This book was given to me for free at my request by NetGalley and I provided this voluntary review.*

I receive an arc of this book in exchange of an honest review.
I have to say I am quite disappointed at this one. I feel that Dead of Night had a potential of being great if only the story itself wasn't cut so short. When it end all I could think was "That's it?" And I don't know how to put it all in words without spoiling anything. So bear with me.

Dystopian books are a huge favorite of mine. Simply put because it's interesting all the different takes for a society. This one love is a crime. I mean that alone should make the would be reader squirming in their seat excited, and intrigued. Opel and Aecker are the main characters and I loved them dearly. You take this journey with them that's so helpless you can't help but cheer along with them in hopes things work out.i very much will pick up the next installment for this series.

Opel wakes up without any memory of how she got there in a post-apocalyptic, post nuclear fall out world. This is a well-written and fast paced book. There is a lot happening in this book and it jumps around through different characters' points of views and plot points. I had a hard time at first keeping up because the story was moving so fast but towards the middle things started getting really exciting and I was enjoying it more. 4 stars.

Dead of Night was a story so unlike others that I have read before. When I heard about this book, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. Even the cover of the book pulled me in. Major cover love. So when I had the chance to read and review it, I was excited beyond belief. I loved that this story had dual POVs. I loved being inside both Opel's and Aecker's heads. I was able to understand them a little more and that helped. I loved the uniqueness of the story. What Opel really was and how she came to be I thought was interesting. It had an intriguing premise that definitely caught my attention.

After being attacked, Opel wakes up with no memory of who she is or what has happened.
Opel was a tracker, not human. No feelings, no nothing. Only death and destruction are what trackers see. Or so they thought. The more Opel hung around Aecker, the more she changed. She was slowly turning human. She even got sick after seeing blood!!! Out of the whole story, she showed the most growth and change. Aecker became everything to her. Even though she was going soft, she still new how to kick some major butt!!! It was also very different for a tracker to completely shut down and come back. She is different somehow. I can't wait to learn all about the details of what makes her unique and special. And the important question why? Why her. What has she hidden that they all want? Can't wait to find out!!!

Aecker is a sweetheart yet he is a protector. The way he protects Opel is so sweet. But he has the moves of a Tracker. So that leaves me wondering if he has been encoded without himself knowing. He cares so deeply and that is what I love about him. He has suffered through so much and became the amazing man he is because of it. He cares for the people of Cupola. After his brother has been captured he goes on a rescue mission alone leaving Opel with Noah. He is then captured because he doesn't want to see the people hurt because of him.

Noah is a character that I didn't like at the beginning, but he is slowly growing on me. He is changing being around Opel and Aecker. I LOVED the banter between Opel and Noah while they were together. It was hilarious!!!

Even though I enjoyed the story, I did have a few problems with it. The plot moved so fast that I had trouble picturing what was going on. I just couldn't see it. I had to go back and reread at times. Another issue I had was, I felt as if chunks of the story were missing. For example, one paragraph talked about how Opel couldn't remember. Then the next paragraph she remembered. I was like "when did that happen?" I just felt as if chunks of the story was missing. That happened on more than one occasion throughout the story. I also wish I connected with the characters a little more. Other than that, it was a fantastic read.

Dead of Night was a fun-fast paced story that hooked me from the very beginning. It does leave off with a little cliffhanger so I have to wait until the next book to see what happens next. Hopefully I don't have to wait too long Carlyle!!!! There were so huge twists with this story especially at the ending. Can't believe who the guard really is!!!! Can't wait to see what happens with that!!! I also want to know the secrets that Opel has hidden. That is what is really liking me. I am having one of those need to know moments!!! This story is a must read and I highly recommend it!!!

When I first read the blurb and saw the cover for Dead of Night I was excited to read this book. It sounded engaging and interesting. As I read this book, I found myself really disappointed. This wasn't what I was expecting. This is a sci-fi dystopian romance novel and the first in a series, but honestly, it doesn't feel that way. For me, it feels like the author starts the story somewhere else, and then gives us the rest. What happened to the world? The author doesn't say. What's going on with the weather?? The author doesn't say. What has created all these changes and aversions? The author really doesn't say. Love is an emotion that will get you killed. There are different types of humans, and creatures/beings called Trackers. The world is different than it once was, and emotions are not something you admit to let alone: love.
We don't get a lot of background on the characters either. There is so much potential with this story, but I feel that it falls short in so many places. I kept waiting on a flashback to tie the story together and to give me something to go on, but it never happens. The story shifts back and forth between Opel and Aecker. They have become attracted to each other in three days and have fallen in love. The author lets us know quickly into the story that they know each other, but nothing is ever clarified. This honestly frustrates me. The storyline is interesting, but I just feel like I'm missing a lot for this to be the first book in the series.
There are also some spelling errors throughout the book as well. Like the author says "offence" when it should be "offense" and "intimating" when it should be "intimidating." I had such high hopes for this story, but I just feel that it falls flat. There are some elements that I absolutely love in this story, but I just wish that the author had put more thought into the storyline. I hate feeling like I'm missing chunks of the story.
I am rating this book 4 out of 5 stars. For me, this does not feel like "the first" book in a series. It feels like a series already in progress with a storyline well underway. I'm hoping that the next book will be more cohesive and not feel like the author expects us to fill in the gaps.

I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis from NetGalley.com

There were aspects of this book that I really liked and others that I feel could have used some more attention. The descriptive writing of the book was done very well and made for an enjoyable read. However, I strongly feel that the romance of the book was too rushed.

To further elaborate, I was sucked into the book by the first paragraph because of how vivid the descriptive writing was on what the character was going through. I felt like I was there, I understood the kind of utter agony the poor woman was going through in the first several paragraphs. Unfortunately not long after said character got doe-eyed about a guy she didn’t know while concurrently she couldn’t even remember who she was herself.

Books often struggle with going into too much unnecessary detail to begin with or too little, but there’s usually a graceful cushion with science fiction writings due to the very nature of the material, how peculiar and original it so often is. The romance in the book wold have prospered more if the readers were given the chance to know the two in said romance separately before they met one another. Not only would it have given the readers a chance to gage at their personalities and get a feel for what kind of people they are individually, but it would also be a good place to start developing the scenery around them. Essentially just a couple of chapters to build tension upon their meeting.

While I feel the romance was a bit too fast paced because the characters were just placed together at the beginning of the book, it was beyond reproach how such a daring topic was explored creatively and a cohesive story was weaved from it.

Overall for me this book teeters between 3.5 to 4 stars, though since Goodreads doesn’t allow halves, either way it would round up to 4 stars. The detailed, descriptive writing was done eloquently in my opinion, but would have recommended a little tinkering with building up hype for the two core characters, and in turn their romance as well.

Everyone that knows me, know that I'm not a huge fan of Dystophian novels.
But the cover of Carlyle's Labuschagne's new novel Dead of Night, really spoke to me, and I just have to read it.

It follows both Aecker and Opel's point of views and I have to say, I wasn't once lost in whose point of view I am. Carlyle really execute that beautifully.
The story is taking place after world war three. It's a world where power rules and the more you have it, the more you want. Inborns, are known as humans and Trackers are generated to become killers. (not humans I might add)

Opel (Tracker) is a really intriguing character, with no memory of who she is, or what she is, we start reading about her and how Aecker rescued her from a prison. The two have chemistry from the first page and it didn't stop.
Aecker (Inborn) is in hiding with all the other inborns. (a very interesting story behind that, but you have to read the novel to know more about it.) He loves reading books and there were not as many after world war 3 destroyed everything, so he sees the books he found as treasures. He is a beautiful well developed character which I would like to know better myself.

Enough said about the main characters. Dead of Night takes you on a crazy journey with danger around every corner. It's a real page turner and sit on the edge of your seat as you feel entrapped with the characters, feel danger following you (and them) just as you think you (the characters) have escaped it and best of all, you feel how strong these two characters love for one another is, even if one of them were generated to be not capable to give love. A real tear jugger at the end, but hey not all novels can end like fairy tales. (Reminds me a little of Romeo and Juliette, don't know why, but that end does.)

It's very realistic and a really well written story. I can't wait for more of the Aftershock novels to come.

Well done Carlyle, I really enjoyed this one till the very end. I can't wait for what comes next.

"The MOMENT YOUR UNIVERSE SPINS OUT of control and collides with something so much greater than yourself, your initial reaction is shock and fright-a deep-seeded fear that runs through every inch of your body and brain. As you are jounced from your course, silence surrounds you, haunting you as the world around you tilts off its axis. All you can do is wait for the fall."

In this book we follow both Opel and Aecker. Opel can't remember anything that happened before Aecker found her and took her in to "The Gate" which is an outlawed community of people who have escaped from the Old City of Cupola.
The problem with Opel being there is that she isn't human ... or well not fully human at least. She's a Tracker "Trackers are soldiers, spies, assassins. They are here to kill any Inborns and infiltrate their hideouts. To bring violent death to Believers and make examples of their flaws."

The problem is though that she doesn't remember being a tracker and she can feel things and understand them unlike most trackers.
Along the way to getting Opel's freedom and trying to figure out exactly what she is, Aecker and Opel fall in love. Which is considered a flaw in the new post-nuclear fall-out world. Their love for each other is used against them and could be their downfall.
My feelings on this book are kind of mixed. I did enjoy it and I really liked how this was a different take on a dystopia. I wasn't expecting love to be the main premise of the book when we got past the halfway point. This didn't make it bad or make me enjoy it any less was just a bit of a disappointment when I figured there was going to be more about the world itself and how they were going to stop the bad people that were now in control. I am interested in what will happen in the next book and how things will end for Opel and Aecker.

Dead of Night takes place in a future world following World War III. Much of the earth has been decimated; society is broken and now governed with little to no freedoms. Emotions are no longer tolerated, love and faith are illegal, and any illness is considered a flaw with all flaws inexcusable. The tale begins with Opel waking up from unconsciousness; she has no memory, is in an unfamiliar place with a strange bracelet on her arm, and Aecker is keeping watch. Her mind is completely blank and she remembers nothing. Aecker has knowledge that he will not share leaving her to heal and her memories to awaken on their own, as well as in fear that others will find out who she really is. Ultimately they have to flee and set off together. This is the first book in a new series and there is a lot of world building and character introduction, both of which leave room for more to come with the ongoing storyline in future books. There is plenty of action with intriguing discoveries and hard choices to be made, betrayal, courage, and love. Dead of Night has an intriguing premise going on with incredible adrenaline pumping action and obstacles to overcome, as for me I am looking forward to reading how this world continues to unfold. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, although not of the throw the book at the wall variety, and left me eager for the next installment of the journey. I would recommend this book for young adults and to those young at heart those who enjoy dystopian tales with promise of more to come. I requested this book from the author and received it with a request for my honest review without any compensation whatsoever, other than the joy of reading a new book, and while I do follow the author on Facebook this is not reflected in my opinion of this read.

"Together we belong in the dead of night."

I am a YA Paranormal reader, but sometimes I have a tendency, when I am looking for new reads, to step outside of my comfort zone and give another book a try. And that's exactly what I did with this one. I wanted so bad to read this book, because the cover and the blurb drew me in, and well......

This book is nothing like I have ever read before. I fell in love with Aecker and Opel and their love story. I love how I was able to connect with the characters and feel as if I was watching a movie in my head. I loved reading about all the obstacles that they went through to try and keep their love together. There were s few sad places that made me hate those obstacles but they always figured out a way to come back together. I started reading and devoured it in one sitting. I hate it when books end and this one was one of them.

I highly recommend this story. A MUST READ!

This was the first book by Carlyle that I have read, and I must say I was floored :) It was amazing! She is well known for writing dystopian novels for young adults, and she has a distinct style of writing. This book starts at the end of World War III in the future. And any imperfection is now seen as unacceptable - including illness and emotions (the largest one being LOVE). Aecker is an "Inborn" and rescues Opel (who has no memory) from a facility. Opel and Aecker couldn't be more different, but somehow they break through each others walls and what we get is an awesome but forbidden love story. And by falling for each other they are breaking all the rules. Will it be worth it in the end, will they survive? You will have to read this awesome book to find out! This is a fast-paced ride all the way to the end, and I can't wait to read more from Carlyle including the Broken series :) And judging by the ending there will be more books in the Dead of Night series as well. I can't wait to see what happens next - I love to read Dystopian novels because it makes all of the bad things in our world today seem small. The characters in the novel are complex and well portrayed, and it feels like you literally become a part of the story and really KNOW them. It had me rooting for their love from the beginning, because I am a total sucker for a good love story, especially when it is forbidden! I can't imagine living in a world like this where you aren't allowed to have any emotions, I hope it never really happens. Highly recommended read by Carlyle and check out her other books while you are there :)

Dead of Night it's the beginning of a complicated Love story set after WWIII. The two main characters have this incredible chemistry that you can see from the first chapter. The story is told in the pov of the two main characters that has you sitting on the edge of your seat throughout The whole book and it is one that I can't wait to be continued. With every calm section there comes a twist or a turn that had me wanting to not put this book down.  There are parts of the story that connect the characters in the book perfectly and Carlyle has truly out done herself having read some of her other titles I was extremely excited about this book and it exceeded all of my expectations I'd advise anybody who's a sucker for a Love story to book buy the amazing book you won't regret it . Having heard some of the background story about the characters lives during the book I found myself highly afraid for them. I know that sounds weird but you know you have a good story when you care about the characters. Along with there stories the two main characters name were beautifully chosen.  Opel and Aecker became people I came to care about and the story when on chapter after chapter I started believing how they found each other was for a higher purpose but That's all I'm saying if you think you would like this please please please go buy it I would recommend it highly.

My star rating is 5 out of 5

There are so many layers to this story; loss, hope, betrayal, frustration and so much more.  The choices of the characters lead them through many difficult situations.  The action and the character reactions kept the story moving along.  There were times where the story seemed to have a bit of a lull or feel a bit too much, but the author eventually moved it back into the direction needed before it got to distracting.

I recommend this book to all lovers of the dystopia genre, especially those that are looking for something a bit more close to the heart.  I look forward to reading further in this series and from the author, herself.

I am a sucker for a love story, and Dead of Night is really not the typical "love story" but it's all about finding that impossible love and refusing to let go no matter what!
In life Opal and Aecker are total opposites, he lives a so called free life outside of The Gate and she is a genetically modified tracker designed to be the end of him. Somehow, the two meet and he is able to break through to that little piece of humanity inside of her and they fall in love against the odds.
Nothing is impossible when love is around, Aecker has to abandon the way of life that he knows, and Opal is fighting to learn what it means to love and not see it as a defect- because love isn't supposed to exist anymore right?
Poor Opal goes through Hell and back just to 'be' and Aecker has to fight to live life the way he wants it. These odds are so stacked against them, but you start this book and you'll find yourself turning page after page to learn more as we go along.
The book bounces chapter by chapter from POV's so watch which view you are getting, I was so caught up in the story that I neglected to notice it a couple of times and I go confused, this was totally my fault though LOL.
Fantastic book, love love love it!!!

A MUST READ and 5 Stars from me.

"Together we belong in the dead of night."

Aecker and Opel - love as deep as the night sky.

War between Cupola and The Gate, held by a great man of his time, now handed down to his sons, Aecker and Dyllian after his death. The treaty had held strong despite The Gate's constant battering. Aecker, Dyllian and the Old city of Cupola, the breed of Inborns, the peace now hangs in the balance as Aecker is unwilling let Opel go and leave her in the suspicious hands of the new president of the Gate, Erik, whom claims to be Opel's husband-to-be. Aecker knew Opel before, this unexpected information doesn't smell right to him. She would have said something?
Aecker and Opel have history, even before she was accused of being a Tracker. She's not a tracker, she's something else?
Trackers are soldiers,, spies and assassins sent by The Gate to infiltrate the City rebels called Inborns and their hideouts.
Things between The Gate & Cupola are going to be shaken, treaties will be broken.
Can Aecker save his people and Opel?
Or will he lose it all?

Dead of Night focuses on the one thing that everyone needs - love. In a world without love, what would happen? Would there be wars? How would people show affection?

Carlyle Labuschagne has done an amazing job of capturing a world ravaged by war and technology that took away love and everything that makes us human. What happens when someone who is supposed to be "perfect" falls for an inborn, someone who wasn't made into the perfect being? What happens when you aren't supposed to feel an emotion and you do? What lengths would you go to save the person you fell in love with?

I cannot express how much I loved this novel. From the very beginning, when Opel has woken up and forgotten her memories until the very end when she realizes exact what love is, I loved it. I fell in love with the characters. I couldn't imagine living in the world they lived in, but Carlyle has done an amazing job of putting me in there.

If you're a fan of dystopian fiction - or just love - you need to read this novel now.

I have read a few post apocalyptic books and they are really difficult to get right because a whole new world needs to be created with rules etc. This book reminded me of a cross between the E4 tv show the 100 and the book Delirium by Lauren Oliver.

This one is about a girl who has lost her memory, Opel. She has to trust the people around her when they do not trust her. Aecker wants to help her but his brother is more reserved. What if she betrays their secrets?
In a world where people have to fend for themselves and live in fear. Can love exist when everything is against you. Opel and Aecker are the romance characters of the book.

I thought this book was going okay until the ending. I don't do spoilers but there is no other way to say it. I like happy go lucky endings.

As for rating I don't really know what to say because knowing the ending which would defeat the object of reading it spoilt it for me.

This is the first book in the series therefore there may be more to come that pull this book back.
