About the author

Yves Sente was born in Brussels in 1964. When he was little, he read La Marque Jaune, Jacobs' masterpiece, over and over again. Little did he know at that age that The Adventures of Blake and Mortimer would determine his destiny...!
In 1998, while he was working for Le Lombard, he worked with the cartoonist André Juillard on the script of La machination Voronov, a new episode of the Blake and Mortimer, a Cold War story acclaimed by critics and the public. Yves Sente then went on to write Les Sarcophages du 6e continent, where he reveals the young life of Professor Mortimer. He confirmed his writing talents with La Vengeance du Comte Skarbek (Dargaud; The Revenge of Count Skarbek, Europe Comics) and then Thorgal (Le Lombard; Cinebook/Europe Comics in English), taking over for Jean Van Hamme alongside Rosinski.

XIII has given the conspiracy the slip when Betty gets captured by some mafioso. After working out a deal, Jason heads to the Netherlands to finally find the original documents of the Mayflower Compact. A document that claims the Puritans from the Mayflower were in actuality a bunch of murderers. Every time I think this series can't get more far-fetched it manages to prove me wrong.

This audacious continuation of the XIII series sees Jason torn between self preservation and saving his friends when a well armed and connected brother turns up for revenge. Fortunately for Jason, his contacts are greater still, and the resulting peace deal sees him gather the means to slip out of the US and head to the Netherlands where he aims to shed some light on Dormann, Jason’s childhood guardian. On the journey, in an attempt to avoid trouble and the attention of the police, he steps in and assists with the fare of a young woman in the wrong class carriage, immediately tying himself to a new set of problems that will soon collide with his own.

The broad widescreen panels, excellent pacing and cinematic framing breathe a sense of realism into this book, evoking the atmosphere of the De Niro movie Ronin or the early Bourne films, particularly with the the latter part of the book. With such care and attention paid to the setting, the characters ease in to the scene and play out their parts enhanced by the effort put into their backdrop. The book’s split into neat thirds, with two action set pieces bookending a deeper look at Jason’s past and his family connections, shedding light on to who he is and why so many people are interested in him and what he may know.

Clearly Jason’s not out of the woods yet, but, perhaps, he now has a greater understanding of who he is than ever before.

XIII:n tarina jatkuu. Jason McLane matkustaa junalla Euroopan halki etsien tietoja kummisedästään. Siinä sivussa paljastetaan tipoittain lisää yksityiskohtia Mayflower-laivan matkustajien salaliitosta, jossa vastapuolina ovat tuhmat puritaanit jälkeläisineen ja ilmeisesti hieman kiltimmät ”seikkailijat” jälkeläisineen. Edelleen on vähän epäselvää, mitä väliä on jollakin 1600-luvun tapahtumilla nykypäivässä seikkailevien päähenkilöiden kannalta. Parasta antia edelleen kuvitukset. Varsinkin junat ja rautatieasemat on piirretty tarkkuudella, jota on yleensä turha etsiä amerikkalaisista supersankarisarjakuvista. Juonesta on sanottava, että välillä käy mielessä, että XIII:n juonta on venytetty jo aika paljon luontaisen elinkaarensa yli.

Un bon tome dans l’ensemble, assez agréable à lire et plutôt facile à suivre. Cela dit, je ne suis pas un grand fan des nombreux retours dans le passé, qui prennent une bonne partie de l’album. J’ai compris l’intérêt pour mieux situer certains éléments et personnages, mais j’ai trouvé que ça aurait pu être amené autrement ou de façon plus légère. Malgré ça, l’histoire reste captivante, notamment grâce à l’arrivée d’un nouveau personnage intéressant. Au final, même si ce n’est pas mon tome préféré, ça reste une lecture solide qui donne envie de continuer la série.

Siguen las peripecias cada vez más enrevesadas del amnésico XIII, quien lleva unos tomos teniendo flashes de su pasado. Una aventura llena de giros, casualidades (¿demasiadas ya a estas alturas?), revelaciones..., que no da descanso.
El dibujo de Jigounov acompaña singularmente bien.

Een vermoeiend verhaal tjokvol plotwendingen en achtervolgingen en referenties naar eerdere gebeurtenissen en "voice-overs" met uitreksels uit brieven en flashbacks etc.

Voorlaatste deel van deze tweede cyclus, benieuwd of ze er volgend jaar een bevredigend einde aan kunnen breien. Niet dat daarmee de reeks ten einde loopt: blijkbaar zijn er al vage plannen voor een derde cyclus rond de open verhaallijn mbt Cuba.

XIII alias Jason Mac Lane sucht weiterhin nach den Unterlagen, die Auskunft geben sollen über die Gründung der mysteriösen “Mayflower Foundation“. Die turbulente Schnitzeljagd führt ihn nach Holland; insbesondere nach Leiden, wo sein an Krebs verstorbener Patenonkel Bart gelebt. Doch weiterhin hängt ihm die für die Foundation arbeitende Profikillerin Julianne im Nacken.

So richtig warm geworden bin ich mit der Storyline von Zyklus II noch nicht. Aber immerhin werden Erinnerungen wach an einige der Hetzjagden aus dem 1. Zyklus. Daher 4 von 5 Sternen ****
