A Bridesmaid’s Guide to Murder

Rate this book
She's paid to be your best friend on your big day... but she never expected murder to be part of the deal.

Emelia Walsh has one of the most unusual jobs on the planet—she's a Professional Bridesmaid. Armed with an emergency kit that would impress MacGyver, Emmy steps into strangers' weddings and becomes whatever the bride a confidante, an emotional buffer, or a human fire extinguisher.

When Emmy arrives at the picturesque Evergreen Summit Resort for Monica Turner's winter wedding weekend, she's prepared for the usual wardrobe malfunctions, family tensions, and maintaining her cover as the bride's "old college friend." What she's not prepared for is the web of secrets, rivalries, and suspicious circumstances swirling beneath the perfect snow-globe setting.

When a shocking murder disrupts the wedding plans, Emmy’s role shifts from emotional buffer to amateur sleuth—all while dodging questions from handsome but infuriating Detective John Sutton, who seems both suspicious of her—and strangely interested.
In this charming first installment of the Bridesmaid's Guide to Murder series, Emmy discovers that when you make a career out of stepping into other people's stories, sometimes those stories include murder.

This cozy mystery kept me guessing all the way to the very end, while still keeping me engaged with an enjoyable storyline. The things that were missing from this murder mystery were excessive gore and profanity, and I’m thankful they were omitted!
I’m looking forward to reading the next books in the series!

An absolutely delightful cozy mystery! I really enjoyed meeting and getting to know Emmy.

Emmy is very intuitive and her gut feelings serve her well. Her ability to read people is second to none. She is always observing others and actively listening as if it is her business to do so. Her seemingly natural talent to manage chaos is directly tied to her very impressive problem solving skills. She is always prepared for just about anything.

What’s a girl to do with such a skill set? Why not become a professional bridesmaid?

As Emmy settles into her current gig, there is a wedding to manage, many people to meet and supervise, details to tend to, and oh yes, a murder to solve. Who knew that a professional bridesmaid would make such a great amateur sleuth! Let the adventure begin.

As Emmy joined forces with Detective Sutton, clues were uncovered and puzzle pieces fell into place. All this crime solving led to some sparks flying and some light romance.

This was such a fun read and I look forward to reading more from this author.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Booked With The Emily’s through BookFunnel. All thoughts expressed in this review mine.

Delightful Cozy Mystery

Darling Cozy Mystery. This could definitely be a hallmark mystery show. A professional bridesmaid who helps solves murder while saving the brides day as well. Definitely an exciting read. And I honestly didn’t guess the person who done it until the end. I can’t wait to read book 2. She has roped me into this. I’m invested. I can’t wait to find out what happens to Emelia as well. I hope she gets a happy ending.

Content: just mention of blood and dead body. Nothing graphic. No sexual content.

Thank you to the author and Booked With The Emilys for the opportunity to read a review copy of A Bridesmaid’s Guide To Murder. This was such a fun book! I’d read one other book a while ago that featured a “bridesmaid for hire” and I thought the premise was so interesting. That one was a romance. This one is more of a cozy mystery with a hint of romance.

Emelia Walsh (Emmy) is a professional bridesmaid. She steps in and acts as more than a wedding planner; she’s a temporary member of the family, basically, solving problems, making sure things go smoothly for the bride and all the members of the wedding party, and so on. She might even act as a confidante and often has to put out fires - either in reality or metaphorically.

In this story, Emmy is at a beautiful inn in Vermont, for a winter wedding. The weather isn’t really a factor in the plot, but it does provide a lot of atmosphere to the story. She’s prepared for the usual craziness, but not for a murder in the wedding party! Because she basically has a “dossier” on all the wedding party members, the detective in charge winds up deciding to utilize her knowledge and expertise to help solve the crime.

I loved Emmy! She’s so smart and resourceful, but also lonely. She would love to have the close family and friend relationships that she sees when she works a wedding. John Sutton, the detective, isn’t sure what to make of her at first, but gradually realizes what a gem she is. And it doesn’t hurt that there seems to be a mutual attraction starting to grow between them! I’d love to read the rest of the books in this series (this is the first one) to see how both their relationship and her career grow. There are currently three additional adventures featuring Emmy: A Bridesmaid’s Guide to The Things People Hide, A Bridesmaid’s Guide to Double Crosses, and A Bridesmaid’s Guide to Family Ties & Alibis!

Thank you to @abigailscott.98 and @bookedwiththeemilys for the #gifted book.

This captivating first installment in Emelia Walsh's Cozy Mystery series kept me hooked from start to finish.

I especially enjoyed Emmy’s unique role as a professional bridesmaid, always ready to support the bride amid wedding celebrations. When a murder occurs during the Turner wedding weekend, Emmy teams up with Detective John Sutton to uncover which family or friend is the culprit.

What fascinated me was Emmy’s preparedness, her emergency kit can handle any crisis. Her keen observations and talent for reading people not only aid her in her profession but also play a crucial role in unraveling the mystery. The chemistry between Emmy and John is charming and instant. I also appreciated Emmy’s relationship with the bride, Monica, which added warmth to the story.

Emmy’s tragic backstory drives her determination to keep weddings from being disrupted, adding depth to her character. The mystery itself was quick-paced and delightful, with an unexpected revelation of the murderer.

Abigail has continued the series with three more books, all available in paperback and on Kindle Unlimited. I’m excited to read them all!

🌼 A Bridesmaid’s Guide to Things People Hide
🌸 A Bridesmaid’s Guide to Double Crosses
🌺 A Bridesmaid’s Guide to Family Ties and Alibis

I highly recommend this cute mystery.

What a delightful cozy romantic mystery! Abigail Scott is a new-to-me author and I was utterly smitten with this first book in the Emelia Walsh Cozy Mystery series. Weddings are a soft spot for me, so I’m now all in with this series.

Emmy is a bridesmaid for hire but when a murder happens right before a wedding, it’s more than she bargained for. The Hallmark energy is strong with this one and it’s the perfect story to settle into if a witty and spunky heroine, grumpy detective, and a great whodunit story is your vibe.

While this wedding mystery is full of found family connections, especially for Emelia, there are some moments of self-worth discovery that I was totally here for. But I think it’s the grumpy-sunshine and opposites attract between the bridesmaid (excuse me–maid of honor) turned amateur sleuth and the hotty detective, John, that really stole my heart. The peeks of attraction that simmered along with the mystery gave me a delicious taste of what’s to come in this series and I couldn’t be more happy about it.

Emmy is a wonderful FMC for this story, as she’s so caring and detail-oriented, and I loved flying through the pages of this one.

Content: mild romance; mild moments of peril/death

This book is everything a cozy mystery should be—fun, charming, and delightfully quirky!
I adored Emelia, our "bridesmaid-for-hire," whose wit and determination had me hooked from the very first chapter. Add in a cranky (but secretly soft) policeman, small-town gossip, and a perfectly tangled mystery, and you’ve got the ultimate cozy escape. Warm, witty, and just the right sprinkle of suspense—loved this one!

If you enjoy cozy mysteries with humor, heart, and a heroine you’ll want as your new BFF, this one’s for you!

- Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the story and was immersed into the beautiful setting that is Vermont(I've never been but I want to visit now)!

- The writer has paid close attention to detail to create rich, vivid and wintery descriptions; 'stepping into fresh snow', 'being greeted by wave of warmth' and heavenly scents we know too well when winter comes around. cosy vibes!

- Loved also how weather was used symbolically; mentions of the chaos of the snow whilst events are taking place and how it soon settles once everything comes to a close. Thought that was beautiful!

- Enjoyed the banter between the protagonist and the detective and the gradual slow burn into a potential relationship in future books.

- Insight into the protagonist was also interesting, her past and how her past experiences have shaped her present were well written and not too much. It didn't stray away from the main plot of the story. It all tied together very well. What a unique, interesting profession! She's such a loving, caring and dedicated person!

- Finished the book in one sitting as I was eager to find out 'who' the culprit was as I had no idea! I kept changing my mind!

- I will definitely be on the look out for the next book. I really want our protagonist and detective to get together.

A special thank you to Voracious Readers Only for giving me and readers the opportunity to discover authors and their lovely books.

This cute little murder mystery puts the heroine, Emmy, a professional bridesmaid, in the midst of the worst of wedding disasters - the murder of one of the members of the wedding party. With a limited cast of characters, there is a limited list of suspects. Of course, the policeman called on the scene,is the hunky, handsome John Sutton. In spite of tension between them, a spark of romance begins to grow between John and Emmy. The book doesn't have any exciting or unexpected turns, but it's an interesting, light read that you can enjoy when you just need to kick back and relax. I received a complemenatry copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers only (although I did go ahead and buy a copy on Amazon just because the format was better for me).

💐 Bridesmaid’s Guide to Murder 💐

Synopsis
Emelia Walsh has one of the most unique jobs out there—she’s a professional bridesmaid, stepping into weddings as whatever the bride needs. From calming nerves to managing chaos, she’s seen it all… or so she thought.

When she arrives at Evergreen Summit Resort for a winter wedding, she expects the usual drama—not secrets, tension, and a shocking murder. Suddenly, Emmy finds herself playing amateur sleuth while trying to keep the wedding from completely unraveling… and dealing with a very observant (and slightly frustrating) Detective John Sutton.

As the mystery deepens, Emmy realizes that stepping into other people’s lives might come with more danger than she ever signed up for.

My Thoughts
This was my first book by Abigail Scott, and as someone in the wedding industry, I was immediately sold on the premise—bridesmaid + murder? Yes please.

I love a cozy mystery, and this one really delivered. It had the perfect balance of sleuthing and light romance, with a fun, engaging storyline that kept me turning pages.

I will say, I found myself wishing for just a little more spark between Emmy and John—but there was enough tension there to keep me interested and definitely curious about where their relationship goes next.

Overall, such a fun read, and I’ll absolutely be picking up the next book in the series 💙

THIS WAS SO GOOD! A cozy, romantic mystery with whodoneit vibes?! SIGN ME UP!

Emilia is a bridesmaid for hire but when the best man ends up dead, she’s thrust into the middle of a murder investigation, while also trying to maintain some sort of calmness for the bride.

THEN ENTER OUR GRUMPY DETECTIVE JOHN SUTTON!!!!! He is the complete opposite of our sunshiney Emilia. BUT I LOVED IT. They immediately hit it off and not only did they just completely understand on another, but John truly saw Emilia for who she was and helped her embrace her unique self.

“How did this man, who barely knew me, see me, I mean really see me, so well?”

“Just so you know.” Dimples appeared as he spoke. “You’re not forgettable. Not even close.”

UGH SWOON! We love a grumpy detective with a sweet side only for her WITH DIMPLES TOO!!!! Lethal combo🤣

“A handful, sometimes. Stubborn, absolutely. But good. And right now, if I was being honest, adorable. Watching her think has become my favorite thing in the world. She's the most difficult person I know, but she's easily the most fascinating. I’d walk through fire for her smile.”

This book kept me guessing on every page. I was addicted and I could not stop reading it! Even if i was wrong about who the suspect was 😅🤣

If you love cozy, romantic mysteries that’s a SLOWWWWW BURNNNNN over the whole series (all of which are available now!!!) go check this book out!

I picked up this book during the Christmas break as I was in desperate need of an escape from reality, and this was the perfect remedy. I ended up reading it in one sitting and immediately started the second book in the series. Talk about smitten!

”It was strange, the way a whole weekend could unspool like that. Everything planned down to the last flower petal—undone by something so tragic.”

The interesting premise is what initially drew me in, and before I knew it, I couldn’t tear myself away. This entirety of 2025 went to helping plan my sister’s wedding this past November, and I felt myself thinking about all that went into that and what mirrored this story. No, there wasn’t a murder, but there was some major drama, and the truth was a mystery, so I could see a lot of parallels.

Despite having to suspend reality to read cozy mysteries, I think this was masterfully done. Everything is kept simple and surface-level with nothing going too deep despite this being a murder investigation. The characters are believable and have a certain charm that keeps the reader engaged, and while the predictability is evident, there was a little twist I didn’t see coming, which is always a treat.

This is such a great start to a series, and I’m excited to see where the Emelia Walsh mysteries take us next!

Whoever heard of hiring a bridesmaid for your wedding? That is exactly what Emelia Walsh is, and she is very good at it too. She’s like a wedding planner and member of the wedding party all at the same time without any of the drama. But, a murder occurs and high stress is part of the venue when the groom becomes the person of interest. It’s up to Emmy to help solve the murder and give the couple their HEA.

I loved this cozy mystery! Not only did it have a list of suspects that possibly could have been the killer, but there is also the beginning of a romance between Emmy and Detective John Sutton. While she can be quite persistent in investigating without always having police permission, she also becomes a pivotal part of solving the case. We also learn the reason why Emmy chose to become a professional bridesmaid, which John helps her let go of some of the past.

This is the first book in the Emelia Walsh Cozy Mysteries Series and I can’t wait to read more! The murderer was a little difficult to determine, which keeps you turning the pages until the very end. The author was so thoughtful and has included a link to Cozy Mystery Bingo cards that looks like a lot of fun.

I received a complimentary copy of the book through Booked With the Emilys. I was not obligated to write a positive review.

I really enjoyed How Was a Bridesmaid’s Guide to Murder by Abigail Scot—it was exactly the kind of cozy mystery I love curling up with. The idea of a professional bridesmaid instantly hooked me, and Emelia “Emmy” Walsh quickly became a character I found myself rooting for. Her emergency-kit-at-the-ready competence and emotional intelligence felt both believable and refreshing.

The snowy Evergreen Summit Resort setting gave me full winter escape vibes, and I loved how the story contrasted picture-perfect wedding moments with simmering secrets and tensions. Watching Emmy shift from wedding problem-solver to amateur sleuth was especially fun, and her instincts for reading people made her investigative role feel natural rather than forced.

I also enjoyed the dynamic with Detective John Sutton—their back-and-forth added just the right amount of humor and spark without overpowering the mystery. While I did guess a few things along the way, it didn’t take away from the enjoyment, and the pacing kept me turning pages.

Overall, this was a cozy, entertaining read that felt both light and clever.

Bridesmaids + murder... well, that's not a combination I tend to think of... but it worked well in this cozy mystery! Emelia is a bridesmaid for hire (talk about a fun job) and has her fair share of wedding stories to tell but she didn't expect a murder mystery to be among them! And yet, that's just what happens when the discovery of a body puts wedding events on hold... and has readers questioning each and every member of the wedding party as a possible suspect. This wedding party may be super close, but that doesn't mean they don't have their fair share of secrets... and maybe a motive or two. With so much to uncover, it kept me guessing right through to the end. Throw in a handsome detective for a little hint at romance and there was much to enjoy in this one. I don't read a ton of cozy mysteries, but this one felt like the perfect Hallmark style mystery, and I couldn't help but enjoy it. This is the first book I've read by this author (and the first in this series), but I find myself looking forward to reading more.

Book Review⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you to the author @abigailscott.98 and @bookedwiththeemilys for the #gifted book.

If you love a cozy mystery wrapped in romance with a total Hallmark vibe, this one delivers in the best way. Set against the chaos of a wedding gone very wrong (hello, murder 👀), this story blends witty banter, emotional depth, and a satisfying whodunit that kept me guessing.

Our sunshine heroine is sharp, relatable, and quietly working through her own emotional walls, while the grumpy detective love interest brings just the right amount of tension. Their dynamic? Elite. The slow-burn chemistry paired with a workplace-adjacent partnership made every interaction feel layered and meaningful.

I loved the strong female friendships and found family elements—they added so much heart to the story. It’s not just about solving a crime, but about healing, self-worth, and learning to trust again. Cozy, closed-door romance readers will feel right at home here. This feels like the start of a series you’ll want to settle into.

3.5-star read.

I love cozy mysteries and cozy fantasy novels to break up my heavier reading. This one fit the bill of a cozy mystery. It was light hearted, gave enough background on the characters without spending unnecessary time on them, wasn't graphic, and moved along.

I didn't see the twist coming and that is why it was a 3.5 vs a 4 star read for me. I was expecting more clues so I could sleuth alongside the main character and there weren't many actual clues to follow in the book.

When we first meet the detective and interact with him, it seemed like this was going to go down the romance path and I'm glad it didn't but there was enough time spent in Em's head about John that I think it lost the point of being a mystery. It was done well, don't get me wrong, just not what I was hoping for on that front.

I will probably read at least one of the other books in the Emelia Walsh Cozy Mysteries, but it didn't hook me to the series like other cozy mysteries did.

A Bridesmaid’s Guide to Murder by Abigail Scott is a cozy mystery. Have you heard of a cozy mystery? I haven’t and of course I wanted to read this and find out. This is the first book in the series, An Emelia Walsh Cozy Mystery.

Emelia is a bridesmaid or maid of honor for hire. She is hired as the maid of honor for Monica’s wedding in Vermont. Everything seems to be going smoothly until someone is murdered. Emelia builds a relationship with the lead detective to help solve the murder. There are so many twists and turns in this book, it has you on the edge of your seat. Make sure you read this book to see how it ends. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5 stars.

Emelia Walsh is the new heroine in this trailblazing whodunit. Walsh runs into a puzzling homicide while working as a professional bridesmaid for a client's wedding in Vermont. This incident spurs her to try her unsophisticated investigating skills in solving the riddle. Red herrings were thrown her way but with the collaboration and supervision of Detective John Sutton, she was able to eventually resolve the conundrum and identify the perpetrator.

The novel had all the positive attributes of a rewarding cozy murder mystery-amateur sleuth, quaint and charming setting, relatable character and a strong hook. Crime enthusiasts will certainly enjoy the sense of escapism this blithe and lighthearted crime narrative provides!

A cozy whodunnit murder mystery with romance, and add in Hallmark vibes? I was all in from jump!!

Emilia, is a bridesmaid-for-hire (I mean how fun would that be) but at one of the weddings a groomsmen ends up dead..

Detective John Sutton enters the picture and my goodness!! He is so swooney! They are the perfect grumpy/sunshine combo.

The mystery kept me hooked the whole time. I was constantly guessing and still never got it right. Which I love when that happens it’s makes the story even more fun.

This was a quick read and I cannot wait to see where it goes from here, such a fun story!

Completely unrealistic - a detective including a completely strange person, someone on his suspect list on top, just would end in his watching traffic again, if not being dismissed. Furthermore, when she Emmy sees him the first time, she knows who he is, his first name and surname, which I think is a major error in the storytelling.
However: the protagonists were absolutely adorable, the storytelling (with the exception of minor things like mentioned above) humorous, fluent, fast paces.
Either in spite of, or because of the flaws in the story (I am not sure myself which of them), I loved this book and will definitely read more in this series.

Absolutely loved this! Couldn't put it down and ended up diving right into book 2! (You'll see what I mean when you read this one. Trust me!) If you're into cozy mysteries, you should check this series out. Lots of banter, lots of sass, lots of suspense and keeping you guessing who did it and what's gonna happen. Also, some mild romantic tension between our professional bridesmaid Emilia Walsh and infuriating handsome Detective John Sutton. Highly recommend if you're looking for a palette cleanser from your usual reading.

I was very impressed with how mysterious this was. The characters in the wedding party were written in detail so you knew whom was whom. The couple were so emotional you could feel it through the pages. The twists and turns it was pretty good. Emmy was intriguing in her own way. We had a heroine who was everywhere due to her job and she put that to good use. The detective was determined to find out who she was and why she was in his investigation it was definitely a good chase there. Overall I recommend!

This book was so good! I had my suspicions the whole time, and they weren't even close 🕵️
Emelia, a professional bridesmaid, has seen it all her in job. She has a back up plan and a solution for everything. Ink security tags are no match for Emmy and her trusty kit! But what she hasn't seen, or expected, is a dead body the night before the wedding.
Detective John Sutton is assigned to the case, and who is a better suspect than the maid of honor, who has files on every person involved in the wedding!?

If cozy romantic mysteries, with a witty heroine, romantic tension, detective love interest, amateur sleuth, and a murder at a wedding interest you, then you won't want to miss this!

Thanks to bookedwiththeemilys and the author for the gifted copy of this book.

This was such a fun, cute, cozy mystery. If you have ever been at a wedding, you know something is going to go wrong. Unfortunately for Emmy Walsh, murder happens at the wedding she is attending as a professional bridesmaid. She decides to do a little sleuthing on her own much to the dismay of the cute grumpy detective assigned to the case.

I really loved Emmy’s witty personality. Everyone was a suspect and the mystery had me guessing until the end. I was able to easily follow the story and despite the amount of characters had no problem keeping them straight. For those who struggle with remembering who is who, the author does give a character list at the beginning of each book in the series, which is super helpful for reference.

I really enjoyed the characters and the cozy mystery vibes, that I have since sped through the series and am about to finish book 4. Super easy quick enjoyable reads.

3.5 ⭐️ rounded up! thoughts for now...

okay despite my rating i actually did enjoy this cozy whodunit and abigail's writing! the only reason for my rating is because...

i guessed the "who?" basically right away after the murder happened

i felt there was too much baggage added to the FMC that didn't have a point though if the book had been longer i think it could've been fleshed out

i can't the sort of insta love in less than 48 hours and it made the detective seem super unprofesh

BUT the epilogue makes me want to continue the series so i'm looking forward to tha ☺️
