This story was a bit unusual. I read this book purely based on the cover and the title. And while the title and the cover fit the story, it didn’t go in the direction I assumed it would. Well, you know what they say about assuming….

It’s a bit on the short end. And it was pretty straight forward with little to no side story, unless you count the one guy who keeps calling to speak with her, but that doesn’t really go anywhere.

A nice ghost/mystery story with a bit of scary thrown in. A lot of it was back story and it was a bit vague. I did enjoy her profession, it made me snort laugh. There was not a whole lot that stood out to me or that I connected with. It was a cute, short ghost story.

I don’t think I’ll read more in this series because I don’t feel the need or want to

I read J.R. Rain's "Vampire Moon" which I got for free on Amazon and I was instantly hooked. I then proceeded to read books 1-10 of the series and several of the short stories books that were associated with it. After reading the book description for the books in The Witches Series and found out they shared a common character, I knew I had to try the series. I just finished this book and was not disappointed! I loved the characters and the plot line and was even thrown for a little loop towards the end which I won't write about because I wouldn't want to spoil it for anyone. This is definitely a book that you should read if you're interested in books about psychics, witches and the like. J.R. Rain is one of my new favorite authors! And now, I'm going to go read book 2 in the series...

Allison works for the Psychic Hotline, and unlike most of her colleagues, she's the real deal, with abilities that seem to be growing daily. When one of her callers asks for her help in finding his daughter's killer, she feels a little out of her depth but is nevertheless determined to do all she can. Her encounter with this client also brings someone else into her life, the spirit of a woman who claims to have been one of Allison's soulmates through many lifetimes and who reveals the true extent of her powers to her.

This was a quick and rather entertaining read, albeit one without all that much depth (though that wasn't unexpected considering the short length). A little too heavy on the religious stuff for me.

Wow

What a wild ride. Loved the characters. A psychic hotline worker is the real thing.. she gets a call for help and she can't resist helping. She is in for a big surprise.

Looking forward to the next book.

I loved, loved, loved The Witch and the Gentleman by J R Rain. It took me totally by surprise…and did I say I loved, loved, loved it.

Allison is a rare psychic, able to see, feel and hear, remote viewing, and she is also a source of blood for what she knew was a very powerful vampire…and friend. She wasn’t supposed to take clients outside of the 911 Psychic Hotline, but Peter Laurie..she felt something and threw caution to the wind. I love her friend, Samantha, a very nice, sweet vampire.

The one legged sea bird. The bee.

Love, love, love it.

Allison works on a psychic hotline. The difference between her and her co-workers is that she’s actually a very talented psychic whose abilities are still growing. A call comes in from a man wanting help finding his daughter’s murderer. It’s against company policy, but she does go out to meet the client and starts investigating.

The mystery is more or less a reason for Allison’s horizons to expand. By that I mean learning about who and what she is along with gaining a better understanding of the spirit world and how some of it works. I found the mystery, how and what Allison does and what she learns to be very interesting and I’ll definitely be reading the rest of the series.

This is an offshoot of the Samantha Moon series which I had read years ago. Unfortunately I hadn’t read far enough into the series to read Allison’s story which is brought up a number of times without enough detail for the reader to understand what had gone on. I’ll be going back and re-reading that series.

Character building is somewhat lacking, but if you don’t need depth in your characters, you’ll find this an enjoyable read.

3.5 stars - you'll probably enjoy this more if you read the Samantha Moon series first.

Allison Lopez might seem like your run of the mill Psychic Hotline operator, but she’s not—she’s the real deal, thanks to her friend, Samantha, an immortal vampire. When Allison is asked to look into the truth of a young woman’s murder, her life changes, becoming stranger, as if it’s not already strange enough.
The Witch and the Gentleman is book one in a two book series by J.R. Rain. It has many elements seen in the ‘Ghost Whisperer’ TV show, that has a character who can see and talk to ghosts. This is a novella, which means it can easily be read in one short sitting. My main complaint is that it’s over far too soon. Rain has created an interesting character in Allison Lopez, and should develop her more fully.
There’s a bit of a twist at the end that the reader might not see coming, and it’s somewhat entertaining, although a bit derivative. Not bad, though, for the first book in a series.

Potential not met by Author

I have recently become a fan of JR Twine, and the two series I have discovered have been enjoyable light reads. The only problem I can see is that the main characters in the two stories are so much alike that one could take the Samantha Moon character from the "Vampire for Hire" series and replace the main character "Allison" , and there wouldn't be a whole lot of editing required to make the story line work. This talented author needs to take a leap of faith and change his characters & / or story lines to make 2 different series. The TaLent to do so appears to be there.....but will this author step out of his apparent "comfort zone" to try something new? I am eagerly awaiting the next book he publishes to see if he can.

I can't tell you how much I really enjoyed reading this book. The author's writing style is inviting to readers and when you open the book you feel at home. Allison Lopez is working as a psychic at a phone in hotline company. The big difference between Allison and the others is that she is actually psychic. She is a remote reader who can see people and what they are doing. When Allison gets a call from Pete Laurie, whose daughter was murdered, she wants to help solve the murder and find the killer. Along the way she is going to also find out a lot about herself and her connection to the supernatural. Reading this book, I felt like I was there with Allison ass she went through her experiences and that is what a good author will do for a reader. Great job.

'The Witch and the Gentleman' took me by surprise. I loved the storyline and how it played out. I felt so much emotion coming through the story. There was humor, some holy crap moments, sad moments and some truly happy moments. Allison is a great lead. I love her compassion, her sarcasm and her wit. I can't wait to read more of this series. J.R. Rain has such an awesome ability to pull you into his stories. Definitely an amazingly talented author. This quick read is a must add to your tbr list. Recommended read.

Well, I thought this was pretty good at first - a nice supernatural-escape-type book. She's a psychic, there's a mystery, and she also discovers she can see/communicate with ghosts. Okay. Then, it just gets totally ridiculous. Even for a psychic who talks to ghosts.

The Witch and the Gentleman (Witches, Book 1)
by J. R. Rain

The main character in this book is well known to fans of Rain's Samantha Moon fans, as the character is one of Samantha's few friends, Allison. As usual, Rain tells a good story, complete with lots of action, strange happenings, twists, and turns. NOTE: SPOILERS FOLLOWING.

I did not rate this book highly for two reasons. The first is the premise that someone as adept at dealing with the paranormal would not have noticed earlier in the story that the entity she is dealing with is a ghost.

But the larger reason is Rain's insistence on making the Abrahamic God a part of the Wiccan religion. Nope. Not a thing. I know that Rain comes from a Christian family, and that of late in his Vampire for Hire books he has been pushing religion, attempting to use his stories about a vampire as a religious discussion vehicle. But trying to marry the God of the Abrahamic religions (Jewish, Christian, Muslim) to the pagan religion of Wicca is off the charts ridiculous. But there it was, with a Wicca "Spirit" (as opposed to ghost) stating that Wiccans accept the Abrahamic God as the great creator, and managing to throw even Gaia into the mix. First, believers in the Abrahamic God would not believe in Wiccan gods and goddesses, such as Gaia. Second, believers in Wicca would not believe in the Abrahamic God. Trying to mesh these beliefs into one happy family grouping makes, or should make, believers in any religion. Abrahamic or Pagan, roll their eyes.

So, even though I like the character, I won't be reading more of the Witches series.

An exhausting read.
This is mostly due it being a first person narrative and the non-stop "explanations".
Mostly of her own thoughts, actions, etc. and then she likes to go of on a tangent. Like the mc'd make a discovery, start trailing of on a completely different thought and it'd take 2 whole pages for us to find what she actually discovered...
Very little action, just a lot of thinking (the above mentioned explanations) and talking (yet more explanations).
She also really likes to point out how crazy she is and make frequent references to her very special friend Samantha Moon. Seriously, if you wanna advertise your other books save it for the end of the book, don't spam the story.
Then again there barely was any story to speak of. No world building, limited story building, and as for the characters, shallow at best.
In fact we hear more of her super special friend Samantha Moon than we do the people actually involved in this case/story. Like after a brief encounter we find out whodunit, but we never learn why, how or anything else about the case. Really weird...
I also don't understand how a "professional" psychic would have such a major freak-out when meeting Millicent or realize sooner who/what Peter is.
I could go on, but enough said

I'm a little stuck on how to review this novella without completely roasting the author...(which I don't like doing because creative work is such a personal thing.) But this book was not good. I suppose there is an audience for this kind of stuff as the author has published several titles, but for me it was cheesy, repetitive, and shallow. (If we heard about her "vampire friend Samantha Moon" - who did not actually play an active role in the story - one more time, I was gonna lose it. And if Millicent used the term "dear" one more time...)

It honestly seemed like this was a novella based on a larger book series or, at the very least, a sequel rather than the first in a story. There were several references to things that had happened previously, as if there had been another earlier book.

Ultimately, the writing was amateur, and it was a pristine example of telling rather than showing. I finished it because the audiobook was only four hours, but I wouldn't recommend it...

Allison works part-time for a psychic hotline. Little do her callers know that they are dealing with a REAL psychic, whose power was enhanced daily thanks to a vampire.

One of the callers she gets is in agony. She connects with him right away with her psychic intuition and reveals for him that his daughter was murdered. He wants her help in finding her killer.

Even though she can’t see ghosts, Allison felt an eerie presence in the gentleman’s house. It was there that Peter (the handsome gentleman) divulges the whole sad story. Evidently, Peter’s mother was a witch, who died a while ago and encourages Allison to take her spell book.

Dreams of ghosts and girls, of murder and witches. Allison gets sucked into a chilling mystery and whirlwind of voodoo. And although she was new to all this witchy stuff, Allison takes it in stride…and lots of alcohol.

Compelling and well-written. A good read and full of mysterious twists.

I've read the Samantha Moon series as well as the Alexis Silver and decided to start on Allison's series as well. I was curious to learn more about Millicent especially. This one wasn't quite as great as the Moon/Silver series, but I can tell it will get there. I know some people are starting these without reading the others, so some slowness in the beginning for character development is needed. I enjoyed learning more about Allison and meeting Millicent and look forward to continuing the series. Also a big thanks to the authors for putting all of these on Kindle Unlimited so when I hunker down to catch up on all of the series, I can do so without breaking the bank.

Good read

This is the first J.R. Rain book I've read, so I dont know what the typical writing style. It was a little preachy, but easily overlooked. The story line was good. I did have a hard time with the repetitive descriptions of past interactions, main character background, etc and found myself skipping paragraphs when that started again. I liked it enough to want to read another in the series and check out other works by the author. I did like how the psychic powers were presented and thought it was a good storyline.

a beautiful spinoff

I got obsessed with the Vampire series by J.R. Rain and wished I had written out the order of the spin off of Allison the witch with Sam’s vampire detective books. I feel like this is such a good book and look forward to more witchy adventures by Allison, but also feel like I missed information while I was reading Samantha Moon. Definitely suggest reading both in the chronological order as best as possible, or else it’ll feel like you are missing information .

I have read several of this author's stories and what I have read, so far, I have liked. This series is a bit different from the others I read. In this story, a psychic, a real one is called by a man looking for someone to help him find the murderer of his young daughter. The plot is strange, but very straightforward and the psychic is visited by ghosts, which has never happened to her before, and the premise is finding out who killed the young girl. You are going to be blown completely away by the ending. Trust me on this if nothing else. I highly recommend this book.

An interesting introduction

This was an interesting introduction into the personal world of Allison (the protagonist) who happens to be a supporting character in the "Vampire for Hire" series. It brings us into her everyday life, and let's us watch her discover that she is a witch, and how she grows into a lead character of her own. An entertaining read, a little new agey, but a fun story nevertheless. 😊

I really enjoyed this novella.

I have read other books by JR Rain, I find his writing style easy to read and his story-telling engrossing, entertaining and with well written plot lines.
This novella was no exception. Our main character, Allison, is funny, kind-hearted and isn't a "damsel-in-distress" waiting to be saved (always a big plus in my opinion).
I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Great new series

I am so glad I stumbled onto this series just finished the first book and could ed wait to download the next one. I really liked the way the story unfolded and the very realistic way the paranormal aspects were explained. Having followed my own spiritual path for more than 50 years I appreciate finding an author who would write in such a thoughtful way about the subject.

Enjoyable, but...

This was an enjoyable read. My only complaint is that for the first half of the book, anytime her friend Samantha Moon was mentioned, her entire name was written. After the first time, you realize she must be a character from the Samamtha Moon books. It kinda felt like it was pushing the other series. I did enjoy the book and will probably read the next one.

I am actually rather impressed with this book! We were given just enough of a backdrop in character development that it kept me wanting to know more. I love the personality of the main character, Allison. Quarky and fun and grounded. The storyline was clean and constantly moving. Looking forward to reading more of this series!
