Heart of the Wolf

Rate this book
Some people believed true love lasted forever.

Forever didn’t exist, and Brielle accepted long ago that she was destined to spend this life alone. Forgotten in a place where she was unwanted and underappreciated.

The only thing she was certain of was that her one chance at happiness now only existed in her dreams. When the visions of a blonde Dane she saw years ago came to call on her. Visions of a forbidden foreigner beckoning her to join him.

After collapsing in the woods, he visited her one final time, ferrying her to Heaven, Hell, or Valhalla.

It didn’t matter which.

At least she wouldn’t have to be alone anymore.

Heart of the Wolf is a standalone Viking romance with a happily ever after.

This was a huge success! - exactly what I wanted :) Leif is the ultimate protective, competent, ridiculously devoted MMC - you can't help but think, "ugh fine, take my heart." Brielle, the FMC, matches him perfectly: strong, gentle, kind, and quietly badass. I loved them together 🥹

The tropes here? Chef's kiss. Fated mates, hair braiding, found family (my weakness), "touch her and die" (Leif delivered), AND he gets her a kitten!! 😭🫶 I was a goner.

It's not a high-stakes story, which works perfectly. It's binge-worthy, cozy, and heartwarming, the kind of read that makes you wish you were tucked away in a snowy cabin.

Would I rec? Absolutely!! If you like warrior heroes who fall hard and stay soft for their girl, this is the book.

My first ever ARC!! I'm honestly so excited and so grateful to Michelle Love for the chance to read Heart of the Wolf early. Can't wait to dive in 🤍

This was such an incredible, comfy and cozy read! And exactly what I needed.

The main characters — Brielle (an English healer) and Leif (the konungr, king, of the Norse people) — were loveable, there wasn’t a moment when I felt irritated by them, they easily communicated with each other and cared for each other instantly. This is a fated mates romantasy, and let me tell you how glad I was that they were in love the moment they saw each other. I don’t need characters fighting the bond, what I need is what happened here — love, care and tension. Definitely, this book wasn’t a slow burn in both terms of romance and lust.

Besides the main characters, the secondary ones did a great job either. I adore the found family trope too much, so when they all took care of Brielle, who was unwanted in her village, it made me emotional. Seriously, no trope is better than this one, when the character who never felt love from other people, is being treated with love and care from people they don’t know well!

The world building was simple, but I’m not going to complain about it because I cared about romance the most. To be honest, I’m not a fan of Norse Mythology, so thankfully it didn’t make me overwhelmed.

The author’s writing is amazing. I love how she portrayed all the characters. I never felt lost in the plot.

There was some drama, of course there has to be, but the MCs stayed strong with each other. No miscommunication, all the honesty, and all the love.

Tropes:
- Norse Mythology
- Fated Mates
- Hair Braiding 🔥🔥🔥
- Found Family
- Touch Her and Die

“Beautiful women make even the strongest men bend."
"Beautiful," she snorted, the word sounding foreign on her tongue.
"Yes. Beautiful. I would lay this world at your feet, if you wished it." His hands caressed her curves, settling on her hips. "I would kill anyone who hurt you. I would rip my still-beating heart out of my chest and give it to you if it brought you joy."

Thank you, Michelle Love for sending me the ARC of your book.

ahhh I forgot about safety *spoilers*

-virgin FMC, MMC not a virgin but he didn’t seem to be a manwhore, no mentions about his past, I think he was celibate since he first saw the FMC 10 years ago (they were separated since prologue until chapter 1, I think he knew she was his fated mate — but it’s not confirmed or mentioned, those are only my thoughts)
- no OW/OM drama, no cheating/sharing/3rd act breakup

A solid start for a debut author!

“You are strong, a warrior like Sigrun. You may not wield a blade, but your will is stronger than steel. The mightiest of blades that make mountains bend. We may face trials, but our souls will always find each other. You have nothing to fear. For there is no place you could go that I wouldn’t follow.”

This was a sweet and comfy read about fated mates mixed with Norse and Viking mythology. Throw in the fact that Lief is a wolf shifter with those protective "touch her and die" vibes, and this had me swooning all the way to the end.

Brielle is the perfect strong FMC to temper Lief's wolf while loving him unconditionally. Lief, in turn, is so loving and dedicated to her that you could feel his devotion pouring off the page. He may be the strong warrior king for his people, but for Brielle, he is sweet, tender, and devoted to her every want or need.

This was a perfect palate cleanser read for me and left me with the good feels at the end. If you are looking for an easy, spicy wolf shifter romance book, then you should definitely check this one out.

I appreciate Michelle Love giving me the opportunity to ARC read this book.

I had the immense pleasure and privilege reading Heart of the Wolf by Michelle Love as an ARC reader.

In her debut novel, Michelle crafts an enchanting story about fated mates. It weaves Viking lore and Norse mythology all into one beautifully wrapped romantic package with a spicy bow on top. Heart of the Wolf features a wind swept romance that grabs you from the start and doesn't let go until the happily ever after, end.

I'm normally an audiobook listener, so when I say that this book had me in a chokehold and I just had to finish it in less than five days with a very busy mom life speaks VOLUMES. If Goodreads allowed it, I would give this book a very enthusiastic 4.5 stars, so I'll round up. As a debut indie author, I am thoroughly impressed with Michelle's work on this novel and expect to see amazing things from her in the future.

If you're looking for a story that gives "Outlander" meets "Vikings" with none of the slow burn stuff: only fierce, raging passion—this is the story for you!

Onto the potential spoilers...

This was such a good read. The love and devotion between the main characters is like a warm, fuzzy hug.

There is an instant attraction and they both stay true to their characters throughout. The MMC is a stoic warrior and the FMC is more sweet and gentle. They compliment each other in the best way.

I received Heart of the Wolf as an ARC, and this is my honest review.

Stakes: Low
Vibes: Cozy
Cover: Beautiful
Spice: Plentiful

Are you coming off a 5 book emotional roller-coaster binge? Is your mind and soul weary from political intrigue, drawn out drama, endless angst, multi-book longing, and the protagonist having to battle for even a sliver of peace or happiness?

Then Heart of the Wolf is probably for you.

It’s low stakes, our problems are quick and easy to solve, insta-love and obsession, who needs plot when you have cute scenes, and 99% PDA. Heart of the Wolf reads a bit more like a cozy biography than a story. The book spans most of Brielle and Leif’s lives together with the majority of the book taking place over the year or so following them “officially” meeting. There wasn’t a traditional plot that I could identify. No inciting incident leads to them working towards a book long goal. The focus is on the growth and stages of their relationship. There is a perpetual warm fuzzy going on here.

This is Michelle Love’s first novel, and it is noticeable sometimes with purple prose, redundant or muddy descriptors, wandering POV, and metaphors/analogies that sound cool but don’t actually make sense. A strong line editor on her next project will really polish up the potential I saw here. Copy editing was impeccable, though. I didn’t notice a single typo or grammar error.

This was such a cute and quick read! I loved the fated mates theme, the comfort she finds, and the strong women tied into Norse mythology. From the very first page, the story flew by—I was completely drawn in.

It starts with some rough conditions, but once she finds her wolf and feels their heartbeats match, everything changes. Waking up to the man of her dreams, who feels the same way, was so satisfying. She no longer has to return to a place where she isn’t wanted or loved, and instead gets to start a new life with her wolf.

I especially loved the epilogue—we got to see their life in the future, which gave me the reassurance of a true HEA. This was actually my first read based on Norse mythology, and it was really intriguing. Of course, I’d heard of Loki (the god of mischief) and Odin, but the other names and stories were new to me, and it was refreshing to explore that side of the mythology.

✨ARC Review✨

To say I was excited to receive the ARC for Heart of the Wolf is an understatement. I’ve been looking forward to reading this book since I first saw Michelle Love’s IG posts about it, and it was everything I wanted in a romantasy! I’m a sucker for Vikings, wolves, fast-burn fated mates, and healthy green flag romances where two lovable MCs quietly build a strong and lasting love. So to say this book scratched every one of my itches is putting it lightly.

The writing here is gorgeous. Not overly verbose or dense, the intelligence and intention of the prose immerses you in the world without bogging you down with unnecessary details. The dialogue was natural and authentic, the world building was light but enough to paint a clear and vibrant picture. The romance was the focus here, and it showed.

The characters were well developed, believable, and likable. Brielle (FMC) is an English healer. She is lonely and outcast in her community, and dreams of the man she saw 10 years ago when he came to collect their tithe. Her growth throughout the book is staggering, and the way she faces her fears to ingratiate herself into Norse culture makes her a warm and gentle soul that is easy to root for.

Leif (MMC) is the ‘king’ of the Norse clans, a man blessed by Odin to shift into a huge wolf. He saves Brielle from an attempted attack, and their bond becomes undeniable. Leif is the perfect combination of touch-her-and-die and gentle cinnamon roll wrapped in green flags. He can deny her nothing, and his desire to worship her and his penchant for praise kink makes him a yummy morsel I couldn’t get enough of. She truly compliments him, and the author did a fabulous job showcasing how their souls complete each other.

The romance was a 10/10. I absolutely love a quiet, easy, healthy cozy romance, with little angst and a whole lot of chemistry. This delivered. These two had me giggling, gasping, kicking my feet, and smiling so big my face hurt. The spice was 🥵🔥.

I don’t want to say more, but if you love Vikings, strong women, spicy men who love to praise, the best found family, fated mates, and a swoon worthy romance that nothing can tear apart, I recommend Heart of the Wolf!! (I already preordered the physical book for my shelf and to reread whenever I want. I know it’ll be a comfort read for me!)

Sometimes the right book finds you at the right time, and that was definitely the case for me. I’ve had this ARC on my list and saved it for a day when I thought I could finish the whole thing, and that ended up working perfectly because I could not put it down. It was the ideal cozy read for a lazy day when all I wanted was a swoon-worthy MMC.

Heart of the Wolf is a Viking romantasy, but it definitely falls more to the side of fantasy romance than romantic fantasy. The fantasy in this is relatively light. There isn’t a ton of world-building to digest. And the fantasy elements, while integral to the overall story, aren’t all that strictly necessary for the plot. So this is great for anyone in the mood for a touch of low-stakes fantasy.

The book seemed pretty well written. Honestly, I got so swept up in the story that my editing English major brain turned off. There weren’t any errors/issues so egregious that it distracted me from just enjoying the book.
However, there were a few moments that I noticed didn’t seem to follow through with the in-story logic. Some of the events and motivations of characters didn’t really make sense within the story the author character. That happens to be a personal pet peeve of mine. In the grand scheme of things, those moments didn’t really harm the story or my enjoyment of it, but I think some tweaks could have made the story even better.
I absolutely loved the main characters. They were so fun and lovable. I thought the FMC in particular showed some decent character growth. It was easy to become invested in their love story. Some of the side characters, as much as I enjoyed them, could have used a little more fleshing out.

Overall, this was just a really easy, fun read. There were moments of darkness, but the love story is really front and center. I gave this 4.25 stars, and 3 🌶️s for spice.

Tropes:
🌙 Viking romance
🐺 Fated mates
💀 Touch her and die
🏹 Found family
⚡ Norse mythology

Some stories wrap around you like a warm cloak, pulling you into their world until you forget the one around you. Heart of the Wolf did just that - I devoured this debut in a single day.

Brielle has always lived in the shadows of her father’s indifference and the crushing weight of her village’s sacrifices to the Vikings. But year after year, she can’t help but notice the white-haired jarl—the Dane who lingers in her thoughts long after he’s gone. Until fate intervenes.

Attacked in the woods, Brielle is saved by a mysterious wolf and awakens in a Viking village, face-to-face with the man she’s longed for: Leif, or Úlfr.

What unfolds is a breathtaking Viking romance of fated mates, found family, Norse mythology, and my absolute favorite - touch her and die 🔥.

Michelle Love’s writing style is gorgeous and immersive, weaving together fierce devotion, myth, and longing into a story that feels both timeless and fresh. It’s the kind of romance that lingers in your chest long after you’ve turned the last page.

Release date: November 8th
Perfect for curling up with on a crisp fall night.

In my honest opinion, this book wasn't really my favorite.

I was somewhat intrigued by the first half of the book, and then halfway until the end I was just waiting for it to be done with because it didn't feel like anything was picking up.

The romance was instant love, not a whole lot felt really original, and the majority of the book was the main characters loving on each other, which can be fine to an extent, but I want more surrounding the characters and world with high stakes and political intrigue which I think the author tried to do, but any conflict the characters met was almost instantly resolved.

I still gave it three stars because I didn't hate the book, it was easy to read, I did read it quickly and it is a simple book for you to enjoy if you are tired of high fantasy, intense plots. I think that was my biggest problem is I was hoping for more and my expectations weren't really met. And that is okay!

Not all books are meant for everyone and the majority of books are for the authors themselves. I appreciate authors wanting to share what they have created with other people in hopes they may enjoy their world with them.

Overall I am greatly honored to have been selected as an ARC reader for this book and leave my honest review.

I have high hopes for Michelle if she decides to continue with more novels.

I enjoyed this quick Norse mythology Romantasy. It felt really easy to follow, and the characters were especially likeable. The MMC Leif is so beautifully spoken, he drops some really romantic lines, along with some that made me laugh, one of my favourite being “Odin once said death by a maiden’s thighs was as honorable as by sword. If you send me to Valhalla, so be it.”

Brielle, our FMC is a really independent and strong woman, who learnt how to fend for herself after growing up in a detached and cold household. I thought she showed real courage and kindness throughout the story and I enjoyed seeing her character grow.

The story felt a little fast paced for my liking, that might be due to the fact that it’s instalove/fated mates. Weeks went by really quickly in the story and the plot was fairly predictable. I personally thought that the antagonists were quelled too quickly and they could’ve had more substance added to them.

Overall, I would recommend this book if you’re looking for a quick, feel good, HEA Norse mythology themed read!

This book releases on 8th October! Go grab it!

I would like to thank Michelle Love for the ARC. I have read this book voluntarily and this is my honest review.

This book was such a cozy romance read with a touch of Norse mythology and wolf shifters mixed in.

Brielle is the village healer, caught between her Christian upbringing and the pull she feels toward the mysterious Nordmen who come each year. When she’s attacked in the forest, a massive wolf rescues her, and that wolf turns out to be Leif, Odin’s chosen, who can shift between man and wolf. Their bond is immediate, destined, and impossible for either of them to deny. From there, it’s fate, family drama, and lots of heart.

Even with some heavier moments; like betrayal, kidnappings, and dealing with her father’s disapproval, the story never felt dark. Instead, it had this warm, comforting vibe as Brielle and Leif built a life together. Their love story felt both magical and down-to-earth at the same time, which made it easy to root for them.

And I really liked the way it all wrapped up! The ending ties everything together beautifully, giving the book a sweet “full circle” feel.

If you’re looking for a romance that mixes Norse mythology, wolf shifters, and fated love, but still reads like a comfort story you can curl up with, this is definitely one to add to your TBR list!

I was chosen as an ARC reader for this book and I have to say, for what it is, it’s really cozy. The prose is beautiful and incredibly detailed. If you’re looking for a really, really, really, really easy read, this is the book for you. Everyone is just so happy and the conflicts last 2 seconds before everyone’s in their domestic fluff. It very much is a soul-mate/fated mates story with a “touch her and die” trope tied in. Loved the relationship between Lief and Brielle but it was just so happy. This rating is probably a reflection of me and my need for conflict and excitement other than smut every chapter.

I do think some of my issues lied with the writing. Everyone is just biting their lips til they bleed or???? The amount of times I tried to self-inflict bleeding whenever a “metallic tang” was on their tongue from biting their lips too hard. FMC is always crying, why is she always crying? I expected more out of the Norse mythology other than being a phaser, all you get are name drops of gods and stories.

What an absolute pleasure this was to read! A perfect comfy, cosy read from start to finish - filled with Viking lore and Norse mythology makes the perfect setting for this magical tale!

The relationship between our fated mates FMC and MMC, was sexy and romantic, filled with passion from the get go! The spicy throughout is outstanding, and the romance is quick to start, but still engaging and impacting right through to the happily ever after at the end! That’s not to say there’s not some twists and turns along the way, with adventure and tribulations throughout … however with all the ‘were is my wife’ energy we knew that our happily ever after was in safe hands!

This was a stunning debut from Michelle, and anyone who likes a cozy, historical romance will adore this! A perfect read for any romance fans full stop!

I think a certain sliver haired Viking will be making his way to a few book boyfriend lists 🐺

This book completely exceeded my expectations. Michelle’s writing is both beautiful and immersive, perfectly capturing a love story that feels timeless. At its core, this is a story of love—both for oneself and for another.

Brielle and Lief’s journey is one that lingers, rich with Norse mythology, fated mates, “touch her and die” intensity, and even tender moments like him teaching her how to braid hair. The relationships shine as the heart of the story, offering growth, self-discovery, and deep connection. (Even if you want something more plot driven, don’t be afraid to pick this up. You won’t regret it!)

It’s a book that keeps you invested from beginning to end, reminding us that love can always be found—even when others fail to see it. A must-read for anyone craving romance, myth, and meaning woven together seamlessly.

Thank you so much for sending me an ARC! Congrats of the amazing book!

I’m forever grateful I got to be on the ARC team for Heart of the Wolf. I’ve loved Vikings since I was a kid, so any kind of Viking romance is already an instant yes for me but this one? It just felt special. The story follows Brielle a woman who’s convinced true love isn’t in the cards for her. She’s spent years feeling unwanted and overlooked holding on only to the dreamy visions of a mysterious blonde Dane she once saw. What I loved most is how the author blends mythology. Brielle’s journey is heavy with grief and longing and the writing makes you feel it the cold woods, the ache of wanting to belong, the strange magic that keeps pulling her back toward this forbidden foreigner who shouldn’t even be real. When he finally appears again, the story turns into this beautiful mix of mystery, fate, and spiritual connection. The author is so sweet, and I’m honestly so happy this book brought them onto my radar. Highly recommend if you’re in the mood for a unique Viking romance.

This was the perfect wholesome romantasy I needed!

We mostly follow the MFC Brielle. She’s the daughter of the village leader and the healer for her people. She is told the Vikings require a yearly donation to leave her village untouched. This yearly donation is slowly killing her village as it cannot afford the loss of resources, but this is how she gets her first glance of her wolf!

This is a insta love, but it’s fated mates and given the MFC’s past it’s really no wonder she falls quickly!!

The MMC Leif, is the perfect protective/caregiver trope. The moment he reconnect with Brielle his devotion is unwavering. He worships her religiously.

Their relationship causes conflict among Leif’s people putting Brielle in harms way! Until he can figure out who’s behind it chaos wreaks havoc between the clans.

I am so unbelievably grateful to Michelle for giving me the opportunity to read Heart of the Wolf as an ARC. To say that I consumed this would be an understatement. I absolutely devoured it!

Michelle has done such an amazing job of weaving Norse mythology and Viking culture into this gorgeous tale of fates mates.

Brielle is so relatable as a character, just trying to do the best she can with what she has... Be it her work or her life. A chance meeting in the woods changes her future is so many ways.

Leif is amazing! Devoted, honorable, and so very much in love with Brielle. He braids her hair... And gets her a kitten. *Swoon*

I've been a huge fan of Michelle's work for a long time! No one should miss out on this heartwarming, cozy, and very spicy story of found family and fated mates. 5/5 stars. Highly recommend!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️/🌶️🌶️

Thank you to Michelle for providing me with an advanced copy of Heart of the Wolf. As always, my opinions are my own!

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book. I enjoyed it but it didn’t wow me. It was a quick story of Brielle, the English Christian healer who admires the Norse folk in secret and Leif, the Konungr of the Viking village.

After setting her sights on Leif when him and his people pick up their yearly supplies from Brielle’s village, she feels an instant connection. A pull toward this man she’s never spoken to. And 10 years later, the fates set their plans in motion.

It’s very instant love and adoration, with quickly solved and passed over problems. While action packed both in spice and fight, it just came across as a bit dull? I still enjoyed it, just not as much as I wish I had.

Heart of the Wolf is a cozy, fated mates fantasy. It’s low stakes and has the sweetest romance. If you want an MMC that is a walking green flag for his woman, then Leif is for you. There’s open positive communication that builds Brielle and Leif’s relationship. They both work hard to be what the other needs. Plus, lots of spice!

I also enjoyed the side characters and the welcoming environment they made for Brielle. Brielle had been alone for so long and was sweet to see her find a new family.

In this book you’ll find: fated mates, planned pregnancy, Norse mythology, found family, hair braiding (Leif braids Brielle’s hair 😭), and over the top protectiveness by an MMC.

Thank you Michelle Love for the ARC!

I thought this book was entertaining and interesting because it was a spicy romance with a Viking twist. Can't say I've read any Viking romances before, but I enjoyed this one! It was a well-written story, seemed historically accurate. I liked seeing the relationship between Brielle and Leif build. And Brielle's acceptance into her found family was deserved. This book also has fated mates and a wolf shifter so a lot of tropes going on, but didn't seem like it was trying to hard. Overall, it was an easy, sweet story to read with lots of spicy scenes and a HEA. Just putting this out there, there is pretty much no language in the entirety of the book *except* the spicy scenes, then it is rather vulgar.

i received an ARC of this book.

Its my exact cup of tea. We have a touch her and die MMC who is violent and dangerous but not an asshole. a novelty these days in romantasy in my opinion. Our FMC is also great; traumatized and self sacrificing but not annoyingly so. i have noticed authors make FMC's annoying lately mistaking that for being interesting. Michelle Love may be on her debut novel, but she doesn't fall into that trap here.

some of the best bits:
* all the paganism (i would definitely rec this to pagan Romantasy fans)
* we have a wolf shifter MMC!
* the yearning and longing that these fated lovers experience in the first 20% of the story is so good.
* solid spice. not just one good scene.

I had the absolute privilege of receiving Heart of the Wolf as an ARC, and what an incredible read it turned out to be!

From the very first page, I was completely swept up in Leif and Brielle’s story—I truly couldn’t put it down. Leif is everything you’d hope for in a Viking king: strong, intimidating, and commanding…except when it comes to Brielle. With her, he transforms into the softest, most tender version of himself. And honestly? That trope gets me every single time.

This book had the perfect balance of heart, intensity, and swoon-worthy romance. I’m already looking forward to diving back in for a reread!

** ARC copy **

I knew from the get go that as long as the myth and folklore was semi accurate I was gonna love this book and man did I enjoy it. This book made its way onto the list of books that inspired the one I'm working on.

I absolutely love the dynamic between Leif and Brielle. He takes such good care of her, it's so sweet. Normally I'm not a fan of the whole instalove dynamic, even in the form of fated mates, because it ends up still feeling too forced to me but It was very well done in this one. It felt like the author gave them enough development that it didn't feel too rushed.

Honestly I don't really have much else to say. I have no criticisms or complaints. It was an amazing feel good read for me and I'm excited for book 2 (will there be a book 2? I have no clue but the author may or may not have told me that I gave her some ideas for book 2).
