What would you do if the only things standing between you and the angel you love were another angel and the fiery pits of Hell?
When Anya and Micah declare their love for each other, the battle for the souls of the star-crossed angels stretches across the heavens. With Heaven forbidding their love, Micah vows to protect Anya by sentencing himself to Hell.
But Anya won’t let him go without a fight. She goes into Hell after him, only to discover an angel from Micah’s past is willing to do anything to keep Micah in Hell.
With love and lies blinding Micah, Anya fights to get him to face his demons and return to Heaven, even if it means hearts will be broken.
The battle for the angels begins where it left off. Between Heaven and Hell is forbidden love.
Georgeann Swiger earned her degree in journalism from West Virginia University, and then spent five years as an anchor/reporter at WBOY-TV in Clarksburg, WV. After having children, she left television news to be a stay at home mom. During that time, she discovered creative writing was more fun than writing about real life tragedy. Imagining interesting character and having them come to life on the page is now her passion. When she’s not writing, she works as a substitute teacher. She lives in Reedsville, West Virginia with her husband, two kids, and a temperamental cat who tries to rule the house.
Cloven Cloven by Georgeann Swiger is the second book in the Trinity of Souls Series and a follow-up to Adorned, released earlier this year. While the series began as an upper YA novel, it’s crossed over into New Adult.
Cloven begins when Anya is dumped off in hell—yes, dumped. She’s just had her becoming, though nowhere near as glorious as everybody had promised it to be, and she is officially an angel trying to make her way into the Kingdom. Naked and completely clueless, Anya is in ‘no man’s land’ outside of the Kingdom and meets a few new characters, who immediately take advantage of her trusting nature and intentionally mislead her—an unfortunate means to an end.
Sometime later, we FINALLY meet Micah when Anya has made her way into the Kingdom. There was much alluding to Micah’s feelings for Anya in Adorned, but I never saw a lot from either. Swiger definitely remedied that problem in Cloven, though Micah and Anya’s reunion is short-lived. So much drama these two! Still reeling from consequences of actions taken during Anya’s human life, the two are separated again, leaving Anya once again on her own, trying to navigate her world, which now is focused solely on saving Micah from himself.
Cloven felt much more like a love story to me. Adorned established Anya’s role as a human while this follow-up showed her learning to be an angel along with the complexities of the forbidden love between her and Micah. I felt the angst of their separation, which propelled me to read Cloven in one afternoon sitting. I wasn’t even halfway done when Swiger brought me to tears. No exaggeration.
The remainder of the story had Anya chasing after Micah to save him from demons of his past. Micah is a beautiful character who has such a story of his own. I’ve implored Ms. Swiger to write a story from his POV, and I’m hoping she does… seriously girl, throw me a bone here.
The characters in Cloven were well developed. Anya grew tremendously since the first story. The whiny teenager from Adorned is gone and replaced by a brave girl on a mission to save her man. She surprised me tremendously, and I was truly impressed at how much she grew up. I guess being dumped in hell will do that to a girl.
And Micah. I was so happy to see him unafraid to show his feelings for Anya. He kissed her, did sweet things for her and didn’t seem to care if anybody saw, knew, or cared—which surprised me after the chaste kiss on earth threw him. Micah was clearly developing too, though again…girl. I want Micah’s story!
And then we have the supporting characters. Whew. Swiger added a few new faces and brought back a few faves from Adorned. We meet Cole, Dahlia and her entourage and of course, Lucifer. Oh, Dahlia—how I LOVE to hate this woman. She’s the classic bully. Swiger also had me guessing which team the players were on, even in the Kingdom. This alone kept a sense of urgency and ‘who done it,’ propelling me quickly through the story.
Finally—in true Georgeann Swiger fashion, she left me hanging. Okay, not literally—it’s NOT a cliffhanger ending but if you read Adorned, you’ll suspect the subtle whispers will keep us guessing once the final story to this series is released. Why is my stomach in knots?
I completely enjoyed Cloven. Swiger has a little bit of ‘dark’ in her writing, her visual interpretations are vivid, and I feel the gloom and doom underneath the sticky sweet moments that shows her ability to juxtapose emotions. And advice when you read Swiger… look for her dropping hints about her story—characters, clues here and there. She weaves all these in, which is a true mark of an expert storyteller. Bravo.
I predicted from Adorned that once Swiger got her feet wet with writing, she would take off and I believe she has. Cloven was an impressive follow up to her debut and once again, Swiger has left me on the edge, waiting to see how tortured she will leave poor Anya and Micah when they finally get their Happily Ever After.
And for Georgeann, I beg of you… Micah. That is all.

Psychocat Reads Review of CLOVEN by Georgeann Swiger
(I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)
Five and a half months ago, I had the opportunity to read and review ADORNED, and I made sure Georgeann knew I wanted to know when the next book came out. As soon as we had a date for CLOVEN, I snuck in into the earliest possible spot. So let's see if the second book in The Trinity of Souls Series made it through Psychocat's claws unscathed.
The Book As Part of a Series: There is no question, you need to read ADORNED before picking up CLOVEN. This book picks up at a pretty critical part of the story, but if you haven't read the first book you'll be completely confused. Ideally I would have loved to reread ADORNED before jumping into this one so that everything was fresh. Fortunately I was able to get regrounded in the characters and story pretty quickly.
The Characters: Speaking of characters, it was great to jump back in with some familiar names. We get to revisit all of the angels from the first book (Anya, Micah, Sam, Celeste, Eli, Simon), and meet several knew ones. Just like before, each of them has their own unique personality and quirks. They'll often leave you snickering at just how un-angelic they really seem.
I really liked Anya in this book. She's far from perfect, but she is strong even when she's not really sure what's going on with a situation. It's not that she never freaks out about things, but she doesn't let that cripple her.
The Relationships: The tie between Anya and Micah is at the heart of CLOVEN's story; however, there are plenty of other dynamics impacting the story. After the mentions in ADORNED, it was very interesting to meet Dahlia. Wow. There's so much I could say about her, but I won't do her justice. Her dynamic with everyone is rather amazing to read.
One of the trickiest things about relationships in CLOVEN is never quite being sure whom Anya should trust. Honestly though, the constant wondering about true motives and wanting to see if various characters are on the good side or the bad is part of what makes this book such a page turner.
Too Perfect or Perfectly Flawed: Taking into account the second comment in the relationships section and the fact that a good portion of this book takes place in Hell, I think too perfect flew off the table in a heartbeat. The reality is, this book doesn't follow some easy and predictable path. Just be prepared that once you get through the first third of it, you may not be able to close the book.
Jen's Final Rating: 4.5 STARS! I connected to CLOVEN faster than I did ADORNED, but it still didn't feel like it hit a really good stride for the first few chapters. Of course, as noted above, once I hit around 30% completed, I just had to keep going. So my big questions now are where is the next book, and what the heck is up with Lennox?
Psychocat's Final Rating: 5 CLAWS! I really don't want to dig to deep into her decision to rate a book that features Lucifer with 5 claws. This implies things about Psychocat that I prefer to pretend aren't true. Hopefully I'm wrong and she just really likes Anya and Micah.
Adorned, the first in The Trinity of Souls series was enjoyable. It was a fun, interesting, new take on the Angel genre, going in a refreshing new direction (as opposed to the Fallen Angel bad-boy idea-which is great, but slightly overused). In Cloven, Georgeann Swiger takes her series to a whole new level, creating edge-of-your-seat conflict, detailed settings and swoon worthy romance.
Suffice to say, I greatly enjoyed Cloven.
If you’ve read Adorned you know that Swiger left us with a rather mean cliffhanger. The beginning of Cloven throws us right into the fray of what happened directly after Anya dies…and is sent to Hell. That’s right. A good portion of this book takes place in the good ole Underworld, and that’s always a good time, am I right? It certainly makes our heroine face her fears, decide what is truly important to her, and see how far she is willing to go to get what she wants, nay, needs. I liked Anya quite a bit more here than in Adorned; we finally get to see what she’s really made of, and by the end, it’s impressive. She has a few If Micah and I can’t be together, life isn’t worth living whiny moments, but I can forgive her since she stepped it up when things got serious.
And serious, things got. When you’re making meetings with the devil himself, you know stuff is serious. Lucifer does indeed make an appearance and it is chilling; I also sense that it will not be his last moment of the series. But the real villain at this point, for me at least, was Dahlia. Oh, she has a past Micah, sure. She takes care of him some. I wanted Anya to slap her across the face every time she opened her mouth.
Micah was far more swoon worthy and less annoyingly bossy in Cloven. Seeing him in his element (awesome angelic soldier) was great, and I felt worse for him than I did for Anya when their relationship is called into question. Everyone believes he should have been able to avoid loving a human, and it makes him less angelic that he didn’t. Dahlia’s power over him is a great conflict, and it creates the opportunity for Anya to help herself rather than relying on Micah to save her.
I missed Eli. I practically jumped for joy when he FINALLY appeared.
With a bleak setting, life or death conflict, forbidden romance and oodles of character development, Cloven is a must-read stand out in the Angel genre.
Perfect for fans of Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton.
This review was originally posted on Star Crossed Reviews I received this book for free for a Blog Tour in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Thank you to Faye for contacting me to take part in this tour. I loved Adorned and I was thrilled to be asked to take part.
We begin exactly where the first book left off. Anya is just about to enter Hell. Once she does she realises it's a vast desert land. There is nothing for miles. She doesn't know what to do or how to get out. She's then abducted by Cole who assures her he can help. Anya isn't sure whether to trust him but to be honest she has no alternative, what else is she going to do burn in the desert? Anya goes with Cole who takes her to literally the last place in Hell she want's to go Dahlia's.
This book is full of so many twists and turns that I was at a loss at who to trust. It seemed that everyone had a ulterior motive for trying to help Anya and were just using her for their own personal gain.
All Anya wanted to do was get to Micha. Her forbidden love. He is insistent that they cannot be together. I liked Micha and all I wanted was for the two of them to be together. They go through so much that it feels like they deserve to be happy.
There is a whole host of supporting characters in this book that range from Evil and manipulative to creepy and perverted and of course there's a few good ones thrown in there too.
This is an excellent follow up to the first story and I really hope there's a third.
YEEEEEES. Four and a HALF stars for this awesome page-turning sequel.
This is the kind of thing that I like to see. All of my issues with the first book - the whole high school drama crap that just blergh - GONE from this book and replaced by a fantastically descriptive world between Heaven and Hell. Well really Heaven and Hell. I'm actually glad I ended Adorned and jumped right into Cloven, mostly because of the great cliffhanger that we ended. And I have to tell you that I was sucked into it - even overpowering my flying anxiety from Chattanooga to Washington.
The ONLY thing that dropped it a half star for me was the ending. Not the ending, but the ending-ending. I can't see where the series goes from here. It felt like the HEA for our main characters. But I think there's more books.
Seriously though, definitely loved this book SO MUCH more than the first. Highly recommended series
When her truth starts sinking in about her existence, she starts realizing she isn't safe....even though she's been warned by those who are close to her. I had to purchase the last of the collection,Trivium, because even though I finished this book...it isn't the end of the story.
