Ria is a screwup. At least that’s what she thinks of herself.
Her mom’s not-so-constructive criticism and constant reminders of her past mistakes don’t refute the narrative either.
Fortunately, there is one positive thing they both believe Ria becoming a documentarian.
With a year of film school under her belt, Ria finally finds herself on a path that both she and her mother could be proud of…that is until a mistake behind the wheel changes the trajectory of her life, and she deems herself unworthy of true happiness.
Ria’s guilt and fear of messing things up pushes her to live a “safe” life, where she works a job she hates, pushes away the man she loves, keeps around a toxic best friend, and allows other people’s opinions to dictate her choices.
But when she finds herself in trouble at her cookie-cutter job, a new opportunity arises to participate in a life-changing film competition. The timing feels like fate and reignites the spark she once had for her forgotten dreams.
Will Ria be able to capitalize on this opportunity and heal old wounds in the process? Or will the past she's been running from catch up to her and steal her dreams away for a second time?
MORE THAN MY MISTAKES is a story of redemption, forgiveness, purpose, love, friendship, and everyday girlhood.
I didn’t expect to finish this book with a face full of tears, but page 238 took me out 🥹 and made this an unforgettable 5⭐️ read! This story was so touching, relatable, quietly powerful, uplifting and freeing. The young women in this story deeply touched and inspired me. Not only is the book very enjoyable, but It touches on relevant topics that we all experience at some time - escaping the mistakes that keep us bound, learning to set boundaries, and allowing the judgment of others keep us confined in a mental prison, unable to break free. One major mistake can ruin your life and haunt you for years, making you clam up and disappear into yourself, stricken in shame and defeat. This is Ria. She was in college, pursuing her dream of being a film maker. She had encouraging friends, and her future was bright, until it all got fucked up with a big mistake. The mistake that stuck with her for many years, filling her with anguish and the judgment never went away. Now, she has a second chance, but can she get out of her own way to live in her true purpose? Does she deserve it? She absolutely does! This is a story that I want my 19 year old daughter and everyone to read. One can find solace in Ria’s story, peace in forgiving oneself, and hope in the journey of starting anew. There’s also rest in the fact that we ALL make mistakes and have to push through the mental torture to forgive ourselves and move forward making better choices. Nobody is perfect and brighter days are ahead!! This is a great indie novel that I highly recommend to everyone!! It can get a bit much with the friend drama and nightlife scenes, but it all works well for the story and will be something that keeps readers keenly tuned in!! I read the ebook and I looked forward to laying down and savoring Ria’s story as often as I could! What a remarkable feeling it is to fight your through the mistakes that try to keep you down and hold you back from being the very best version of yourself 💓 “…Your life is not ruined. It’s simply in reconstruction.” “Do other people’s opinions about you hold more weight than what you believe about yourself?” 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐓𝐁𝐑 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧?
I was so excited to sign up for Amanda’s debut novel—and she delivered in all the best ways. From layered character development to the raw emotions left on the page, she struck the perfect balance between romance and self-growth. I rooted for Ria every step of the way, hoping she’d see herself beyond her past and make it to the other side of forgiveness.
More Than My Mistakes is a beautiful reminder to extend grace—to others, yes, but especially to yourself. We’re all carrying stories, trying to break generational curses and quiet inner battles. This book isn’t just about romance—it’s about all the relationships that shape us: family, friends, support systems. It had me reflecting on how we show up for each other through the highs and the lows.
I wanted to hug Ria and whisper, “You’re going to make it.”
Even though the romance was more of a background plot, I loved watching Ria and Onyx grow from friends into something real. The intimate moments of unwavering support and soft love had me cheering for Onyx every time.
Also—I need more of this friend group. I’m a mix of Elle and Kayla, and I absolutely love that for me. 💚
This was such a beautiful story—not just a love story, but a journey through life, trauma, setting boundaries, and surrounding yourself with the right people. I loved seeing so many women support one another, overcome obstacles, and reclaim their power. 💪🏾✨
Now let’s talk about the romance! This book keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat. Expect f-boy tendencies 👀, but also real men who show up and put their women first. 💯
The fact that this is Amanda’s debut novel completely blew me away. I can’t wait to see what she does next. Make sure to grab this one when it drops on 6.6.25!
This was my first time reading from this author. I really enjoyed this book. I could relate to the main character. Her highs and lows as well as her insecurities and anxiety. I loved how the author intertwined her friends and family in this story as well.
The journey of Ria is both poignant and relatable. I was immediately drawn to Ria's character, a young woman grappling with her own insecurities and the weight of her past. Amanda expertly captures the frustration and growth that comes with navigating life's challenges. Ria's struggle to break free from her toxic relationships and embrace her true passion for documentary filmmaking resonated deeply with me.
And even though romance isn’t the main point of this story. Onyx sureee did have me swooning and smiling like a little school girl with a crush.😭 He was definitely so patient with Ria and was her biggest cheerleader. He never let her sit in her self doubt for too long.
The story beautifully explores themes of redemption and self-forgiveness, reminding us that it's never too late to chase our dreams. The emotional depth of Ria’s journey, paired with her pursuit of happiness amidst self-doubt, kept me turning the pages. I felt an intense connection to her experiences, making it impossible not to cheer for her as she confronted her demons.
Ultimately, this book is a heartfelt exploration of what it means to reclaim one's identity and purpose. More Than My Mistakes is a must read for anyone who has ever felt like a screw up but yearns for a chance at redemption. Ria's story is a testament to the strength found in vulnerability and the power of embracing our true selves.
I’m not crying, you are!!! Wow this was so freaking beautiful!
“Your wound was not your fault, but your healing is your responsibility”….wow
This novel was beautifully written and I am really at a loss for words trying to write this review. It took Ria some years to get out of the hole she dug herself in. I say that she put herself into that hole, because she let guilt run her life. I am glad that she has such a strong village to support her! That village did not play about her! Her character development did awhile to unfold, but it was intentional. It was what kept the storyline flowing and it brought up the reminder that there isn’t a time limit on healing.
ONYX!!! From time his name was brought up, I knew he was going to be a man to be played with!!! ONYYXX! My gosh! That’s man right there! That’s a book boyfriend right there!!
This book is PERFECT for those who made a mistake in life and constantly berating themselves about it or listening to the outside noise. This book is PERFECT for those in college and just don’t know what’s next in life. This book is for those whole love the tropes friends-to-lovers, second chance romance, and friendship drama.
I loved everything about this story. From Ria and Onyx’s love story, to Ria becoming herself again and for me getting that reminder once again that I need to give myself grace. Wow I love this book! This gave me all the feels!
More Than My Mistakes” was such a beautiful and uplifting story. Even though the book has a romance theme, it’s not only about that. It dives deep into real-life topics—guilt from past mistakes that keep us stuck, learning to set boundaries with people we’ve outgrown, surrounding yourself with folks who truly want to see you win, and reclaiming your power. One of my favorite parts of the book was when Rita finally approached her mom about the way she’d been treating her and those backhanded compliments. That moment was powerful. It reminded me how important it is to face our childhood trauma so we don’t project those wounds onto our own children. I enjoyed this story so much. Amanda was dropping so many gems that I almost highlighted the whole book 😂. One of my favorite quotes was: “Your life is not ruined, it’s simply in reconstruction.” I also loved the sisterhood in this book. The way the girls poured into each other was chef’s kiss. And Onyx? That’s a good man, Savannah!
I seen this book floating around and decided to give it a chance and this ended up being the book I didn’t know I needed to read.
Ria has her life somewhat all together and when she makes a mistake that changes the course of her life and how she treats herself internally.
What I loved about this story was the fact that Ria kept pushing and that she had a village of friends that wanted to see her win, not only professionally but personally. I also loved to see the relationship with her family evolve it what it is now. But most of all I loved how she was able to finally be at peace in her life.
I see that this is book one in this series and I can’t wait to see what’s next for this series.
Enjoyed this book. It was well written and flowed nicely with good editing. Dealt with some heavy topics in a gentle manner. The forgiveness piece really struck with me. I felt like it was a YA / Women’s Fiction . The Closed Door concept in Romance stories ( is not my normal read) I like to see the spicy 🌶️ and not imagine it. Yes, there was intimacy, just not enough for ‘Me’. Heavy on the ‘Me’! However , the author kept me entertained with the strong character interaction and dialogue. Good job and good read for a debut book.
I love how there were two different parenting styles being shown and how the method Ria’s mother was using was traumatizing for her and her sister. Also realizing she needed therapy because she never forgave herself for the pain that she caused others when they had already forgiven her. Ria and Onyx, heart eyes all around! I thought this was a great story and I love the authors writing style.
I loved ever bit of this story! The growth of FMC was realistic and they way Onyx loved her through it all. As a debut book the author did a beautiful job. The character building was well done. I love a good friends to lovers romance. This is one I would most definitely recommend to my romance girlies.
I liked the story. Enjoyed the characters. It’s a good debut. Ria’s was tough and some of her issues were self inflicted. I was glad to see how she was able to pull herself together and press forward.
I enjoy seeing how Ria navigated through a difficult situation and was able to see her worth. I also loved her friends and how they stuck by each other. Mr. Onyx..all gas and no brakes kept me smiling as well. I look forward to reading more from this author.
The way Ria almost made me slap some sense into her! Lawd! Thank God she got her life together! I really did love the book. Amanda Linette... you write without abandon. Your way of weaving the story together is phenomenal. Job well done!
This is an amazing read about personal growth, frenemies, and believing in yourself and others. I knew from jump ol' boy wasn't worth nothing and ol' girl was a number 1 hater .
10/10 this book was so good. Can’t lie though Ria did get on my nerves with her self doubt and sabotage, but she was so real and I definitely seen myself in her. This felt like a love letter to myself. And Onyx, I’m sorry but where can I find me an Onyx, Ria you lucky lucky girl. 😭
