In My Rhythm

Rate this book
Zora Hart has learned to thrive on her own terms.
A plant shop owner with roots deep in Atlanta’s neighborhoods, she knows how to nurture growth—but trusting people? That’s harder. After too many years building walls she calls independence, Zora’s not looking for anyone to save her. Not again.

Darius Lawson moves quietly through the world.
An app developer with a sharp mind and a steady hand, he keeps his circle small and his peace closer. Love has always felt like something loud he didn’t know how to hold—until Zora crashes into his life with all her stubborn beauty and wild heart.

Neither of them is built for halfway.
And neither of them is used to someone staying without being asked.

As business pressures, betrayals, and old fears surface, Zora and Darius must learn how to move at a rhythm neither of them controls—a rhythm made for two.

In My Rhythm is a soulful, slow-burn romance about tenderness without condition, trust without performance, and choosing love without losing yourself.

It’s okay for a book to have a theme. My issue is when the theme is constantly shoved down my throat throughout the story as if I’m not smart enough to get it unless it’s explicitly spelled out to me several times. Trust me, I get it. I got it two chapters in. There was no need to mention it several times per chapter. There comes a point where it just becomes redundant.

The two main conflicts in this book felt almost…cartoonish? I’m not even sure if that’s the right word to describe what I feel towards it. First of all, I had no idea the plant world had such a big audience - and even had beef on top of that. Then Darius’ own conflict felt very — strange. Very out of left field. I think I audibly said “oh” when I realized where it was going. It’s like a switch flipped because that was incredibly out of character of him and there was literally nothing in how he acted throughout the novel to indicate he even moved like that. And the way Zora didn’t care at all that he did that was - weird, to say the least.

There were also multiple points where entire scenes were repeated as well as several grammatical errors. I do try to give grace when it comes to independently published works, so this didn’t bother me as much.

I still stand by my initial thought that this book wanted to be deeper than it was. Don’t get me wrong — there /is/ depth, just not as much as it insists it has. It’s a decent book. I see what it wanted to be clear as day. And I think most people would have, more or less, a nice time reading it. However, it just laid it on very thick.

This story was written with care

I really enjoyed reading Darius and Zora’s story . Darius had come a long way and he was definitely a man now . I feel like this was a slow burn but I feel like the author handled the characters with care and gave us time to understand them and their love story . Of course it was nice to see Saige again . Kiera was the best friend and support Zora needed and was funny . Jemma and Tamara got what they deserved. But let’s talk about them spice scenes who knew Darius was going to talk you through it. Not me lmao. Hot hot hot . A good follow up.

Loving Their Rhythm

This read hit different but in a good way! It’s a slow burn for sure but in a good way! I’m a plant girlie and the talk about it in this read was relaxing. The fact that this story is based around the spectrum is a plus for me. To know me would be to know how I feel and advocate for special needs!

Let’s chat - the way the author described both FMC & MMC was on point. If you read Colliding Into His Arms you learn about Darius and that he’s on the spectrum but will instantly fall in love, at least I did - 🥹!

Darius -He was silent in his own way, calculated, educated, family oriented and not the one to play with in my opinion. Can’t forget noise bothered him and he kept his ear pieces with him at all times -🤣! Everyone close to him understood him. My guy along with his sister Saige opened a community center for all especially those that are autistic! Not only that, can’t forget the award winning app he created. Loved that he was the type that didn’t get loud or yell to be heard or to tell someone off.

Zora is a light that would brighten any room she enters. She was a sunflower in her own way. Raised in foster care, no stability and no love or support, it right my girl a lot and made her the woman she is today - owning her own plant shop - Wild Hart! Not just that that she makes her own plant soil. The attention and care she provided to the plants showed her nurturing and caring spirit.

What I enjoyed is the connection between Darius & Zora! It’s like their connection was immediate but due to past experience they were guarded! The way they paid attention to each other and noticed things each did when something was wrong or needed to be said. The way they asked each other permission before they got into their personal space. They both learned each other rhythm - 🥰. Oh but behind that room door, my guy was a different person. The spicy was spicing - 😜!

They both dealt with childhood trauma. Zora in the system and dealt with emotional, mental and I believe it was attachment issues. Whereas Darius, dealt with neglect from his mother and to me physical abuse from her friend. Basically they both lacked love at a young age and they were shown the incorrect way to love in my opinion, but they found it in each other - 🥰. The support they showed each other was beautiful, especially when someone was stealing from Zora and they all addressed it with her. Oh but when jealousy and greedy surfaces that caused harm to Zora, the side of Darius that was mention left me speechless. They tried it and messed around & found out. That man played no games about her or their rhythm - 🥰!

There’s so much more that I could and want to talk about, but I promise my review would NEVER end 🫣. That’s how much I enjoyed this read. That ending, listen when he said “Be My Rhythm”, I think a tear dropped. This series needs to be added to my collection of physical book. Enjoyed this read so much!

We met Darius in the first book in this series, Colliding Into His Arms, which if you haven't read you should start there. Although the story was mainly about his sister Saige, we did see glimpses of him and learned that he was autistic. In this book it is now 8 years later and we see how he has grown into more of a man and how he has created something for himself to help him in his everyday life that can also help others.

It was nice seeing Darius in a different setting and how he was able to create comfort in his various settings. It was also nice watching the relationship grow between him and Zora who had some bad situations with people in the past and is weary to let people in. Once she did let Darius in she saw that he was not like others in her past and that she could trust him and rely on him. There was some bumps along the way but she got it together. It was interesting to see him dominate in the spice scenes as well.

I also liked that this book had some kind of drama element in it that fit within the storyline and the people who I wanted to get what they got, got it. If you read it, you'll see what I mean. Overall this was a good romance with a good amount of story and spice.

In My Rhythm
C.M. Campbell

Darius and Zora’s love story is sultry and steady. It’s their tenderness that fosters a love that is gentle and strong. Both parties have embraced the trauma of their youth. But, frequently the past, whether it be through guilt or shame lingers in the stillness. This is a story of two characters choosing to ground themselves in the present instead of running from yesterday’s disappointment. It’s revealing. You can’t hide from what festers inside, no matter how quiet you think the pain has become.

Campbell’s writing style is poetic in a way that ambles into your brain and stays there. Waiting for you to revisit when the time permits.

My takeaway is to be available for the good things. To be open for the unexpected, perfectly accidental moments. By no means does that mean that everything from that point will be uncomplicated. That would be too simple and nothing about life is simple when it comes to love.

Thank you @ for the ARC.

In My Rhythm (Finding Home: The Lawson's Book 2)

This book was so good. It was the kind of good that will have you living it for days. It is rooted in grief, love, listening, being seen, being heard, and being silent.

Darius was brilliant. His mind worked at his own rhythm and not everyone else's. His mom never understood that. She just saw him as broken and couldn't be bothered. She let her friend use him and when Darius decided that being used was enough, he sat with his decision and let go.

Zora battled against love because she always lost. No matter what she planted, something would cause it not to grow. She closed herself off for protection and became rooted in what she knew best. Meeting Darius the day her truck broke down changed how she planted her roots.

This was such a beautiful and well-written book. I truly enjoyed this series and I can't wait to read more books by C.M. Campbell.

This book was vey different and interesting. I like grown man Darius and how present and attentive he was with Zora. Zora had past trauma after being in the foster care system that made her scared to commit but Darius’s strong presence was what she needed to move forward all in their relationship. The book left questions like was Jemma and Tamara’s bodies found and did the have a funeral for Jemma, what was the ending result with Loren and did she cease and desist using Zora’s formula, an what happened with GGC spotlighting Wild Hart. The book was well written but left unanswered questions in my opinion.

Loved It

We got a glimpse of Darius in Colliding Into His Arms, but this time we get to see him in a completely different light. Grown man status. Running his own business. Quiet BDE. Darius is the man, do you hear me?!

I'm not gonna give the book away, but I loved Zora as well, especially when she softened. She and Darius balanced each other well.

In My Rhythm provides just enough angst, drama, romance and spice to keep you hooked. I sure was! So it's a five star read for me.

Great Book

I never write a review but I had too. I loved this book. I was smiling at D & Zora's love grow. I love how it showed Autism in a different light. There is so much we don't understand & know about the condition. Love it was a real story plot & not just filled with a lot of sex. Each sentence wasn't filled with a lot of cussing which I am thankful for. I loved Darius character & Zora was great too. The supporting character was a great touch. I don't want to leave a long review but this was a really great story.

Loved This Book

Shined a light for me that just because you are on the spectrum or have a disability does not mean that you can’t live a normal life. It doesnt mean you can’t fall in love normally or that you can’t crate a career for yourself. There’s is a person out there for everyone and when you meet them you won’t be looked at as a burden or a charity case. Autism isn’t an end all be all for life there brains just work a little differently. BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN BOOK. great job!

Honestly I absolultely LOVED the MMC and FMC! Their chemistry was perfection. The autism representation was beautiful! Overall I would give this book a 3.75 star out of 5! I loved the book up until about the 76% mark, and then it dragged and the last 24% took a turn that it didnt have to. The FMC was kidnapped, the MMC went and killed the kidnappers!

I really was sitting here like how did we get here! The scene wasn't horrible just didn't feel like it belonged in the book because it as so beautiful!

Two individuals hesitant to share a space with someone again, after being let down one too many times, take a chance with the unknown and choose each other. From the moment Darius and Zora met, the pull....the chemistry was there. Darius was a patient man;“slow. steady. certain.” Darius learned how to care for Zora in the way she needed & not in the way he wanted to. He paid attention- “I see you. You’re safe with me.” The way they loved each other was to their own rhythm…nobody’s else.

Good read!

I was excited to read Darius story and it was good… It was something special between Zora and Darius and the chemistry between the two I adored…it was some parts that fell flat or wasn’t cohesive but it didn’t turn me away from the story because I really wanted to see it through until the end. Nevertheless I can’t wait for what’s next

Poetry in pottery!

This book is a reminder that love can be like a
sultry silhouette and sometimes it can be where you bury yourself and get dirty.
I absolutely enjoyed this book. I do hope the author rereleases it because there’s some parts that are repetitive (an editing issue). Overall, a delight!

Had good potential

The storyline was excellent BUT there were more than a few grammatical errors and one chapter actually repeated itself. The scenes were not well thought out. I did enjoy the characters and will read the author again, but I’m hoping the editor does a better job.

a beautiful love story

I read this book in one night and I am so in love with Darius and Zora. This book showed people on the spectrum as people. Darius is such a beautiful soul and Zora is like a lot of women who is so use to being hurt. That you assume everyone is going to hurt eventually. I am glad she allowed herself to be loved. 5 star read!!

Just Wow!!

I can't even explain how heart warming and full this book is!! It had errors and usually once I see too many errors I put it down!! But I literally couldn't! It wasn't hard for me to look past the mistakes to see the story the author had for us! And it was beautiful!!!!!!!

Sweet

Sweet organic romance. A little too much use of the word “intentional!” A few loose ends after the failed abduction. I loved watching (reading) how Darius moved and excelled with autism. So proud of him. I loved him in book 1 but loved him more in his own story.

This was so fake deep. I was incredibly disappointed. I saw where it COULD have went, but there was so much repetition and error it was hard to overlook. The plot seemed almost comical. Idk a lot missing and a lot to be desired.
