When rising journalist Daisy Jenkins sits down to interview Logan Blake, a brilliant, Cambridge-educated neuroscientist on a mission to redefine men’s mental health, she expects a compelling story. What she doesn’t expect is the spark that ignites between them, or how deeply entangled their lives will become.
From London to Sicily, through years filled with ambition, reinvention and heartbreak, Daisy and Logan circle each other in a delicate dance of missed chances and unspoken feelings. But when tragedy strikes, drawing them both to New York, fate converges in a single, devastating moment that forces Daisy to confront a truth that has quietly shaped their lives from the very beginning.
H. Pearce is a multi-genre author, partner, mother, and student studying mental health and creative writing. Her two areas of study often merge together in her written work, creating heart-wrenching stories that are relatable and raw. She is passionate about bringing attention to matters that are often overlooked in literature, using her areas of study to bridge the gap between what exists and real-life stories people need to read.
This book caught me off guard in the best way. I went in expecting a love story, but what I got was something much messier, more honest, and way more emotional than I was ready for. Logan and Daisy aren’t picture-perfect — they’re complicated, broken, and so real it kind of hurts. Their dynamic felt raw and unfiltered, which made it impossible not to care about them, even when things got hard to watch unfold.
What I really appreciated was how this story didn’t try to romanticize everything. It’s the kind of book that chips away at you as you read and when you finish, you’re left sitting there with that quiet ache in your chest, that leaves you feeling hollow. The finch at the end had me in tears.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ [NetGalley Review – Spoilers Below]
The Last One by H. Pearce is a quiet, beautifully written exploration of love, timing, and the soul-deep recognition that sometimes, the one has been beside you all along—even if you never really got to call them yours.
This is not your typical love story. There’s no sweeping romance or grand declarations immediately—instead, it's a slow, aching realisation of connection built over time, across glances, shared messages to one another, and missed chances. The writing is intimate and understated, and it perfectly captures that sense of yearning we all carry: the hope that someone out there is meant for us.
📌 [End Spoilers]
This story lingers with you. It asks what it means to love someone completely, without allowimg yourself the chance at a relationship with them and even if you never get the fairytale ending. Which sadly for these beautiful characters, they don't. For readers who enjoy emotional depth, bittersweet truths, and stories that quietly stay with you, The Last One is a standout. One of the most affecting reads I’ve picked up this year.
I cannot wait to read more from this author

The Last One by H. Pearce follows the story of Daisy Jenkins a journalist who in the course of her work, crosses paths with Logan Blake, a prestigious neuroscientist dedicated to researching men's mental health. What begins as an interview soon becomes something much more significant in her life.
Although this story is short in length you can perceive the depth of its characters and I must say it was unexpectedly introspective in the best possible way. Additionally, I loved the writing style.
It was very easy to get hooked and not want to stop reading. I often found myself deeply connected to Daisy and Logan's thoughts. By the way, they are both very similar and very stubborn—so much so that they remind me of myself.
The spark that began to emerge from their encounters was incredibly perceptible to me as a reader, but over time, it became something very different for both of them.
Even so, I loved watching them interact and how they brought out so many aspects of each other's personalities. However, it soon turned into many missed opportunities, into something "unspoken but undeniable." Each of them made decisions so far removed from who they were that the story suddenly took a completely different direction.
Now I had to see them in a more independent light. On one hand, it hurt to see how the situation affected Logan, and on the other, I began to recognize Daisy's new reality and the difficult position she now had to take charge of.
Daisy found herself stuck between decisions and truths that her heart may have already resolved, but her mind had not. I certainly couldn't imagine myself in a situation like that, or whether I could do anything differently. Daisy is a very strong woman for that reason.
When the words were finally spoken, it ended up being a very hard blow that somehow also turned out to be something very meaningful.
The Last One by H. Pearce is an emotional gut punch in the best way possible. A love story shaped by time, grief, and the weight of everything left unsaid. It’s tender, aching, and raw—with moments that quietly break your heart.
Told in multiple timelines, this is a slow burn second chance romance that explores how love can linger—haunting and beautiful—even in the shadow of devastating loss. Pearce captures the complexity of mental health, guilt, and healing with unflinching honesty. Every page feels heavy with longing, and by the final chapter, you’re left gutted in the quietest, most powerful way.
Note: This is not a happily-ever-after story. It’s real, it’s raw, and it doesn’t wrap everything in a neat bow—but that’s part of what makes it unforgettable.
Tropes & Themes: 💔 Missed opportunities 💞 Second chance romance 🔥 Slow burn 🖤 Grief & Loss 🧠 Mental health rep ⏳ Dual timelines ⚠️ Accidental death
⚠️Trigger Warnings⚠️ Pregnancy, suicidal thoughts, PTSD, grief, loss of a loved one, and accidental death. Please read with care.

Wow. The Last One completely wrecked me - in the quietest, most delicate way possible. It’s short, but don’t let that fool you. This story carries weight.
Daisy and Logan feel so real. The kind of “what if” love that lives between the lines. The timing is always off, the words never quite said, and you’re just watching it all unfold with that sinking feeling in your chest because you know how it ends… and yet you hope anyway.
It’s tender, it’s raw, and it doesn’t shy away from the messy stuff - grief, longing, duty, motherhood, mental health. H. Pearce somehow captured all of that in just over 200 pages, and I devoured it in one sitting with tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat.
This isn’t a happily-ever-after kind of love story… it’s the kind that lingers. The kind that makes you stare at the ceiling after finishing and just feel for a bit.
If you’ve ever had someone who felt like home but never really got to be yours… this one will break you. And you’ll thank it for doing so.

I feel like I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into when i requested this arc. It’s this kind of book everyone should read because it leaves you raw and empty at the same time. It’s not the kind of love story that you usually see. It’s slow and so full of yearning. You know these moments you have with people where you think what if? What if I have said that or what if I would just act. But you don’t do it so it will be just a missed chance.
Logan and Daisy taught me so much. I respected them both deeply for how real and human they felt.
I also wanna add that the writing was so beautiful. You felt the meaning behind each word. And even though this book was only 200 pages, it didn’t feel short at all. I will definitely be checking out more books by H. Pearce.

This book destroyed me. I felt so sick. So freaking sick I threw up twice. My heart hurt so bad. I think I've never felt so heartbroken as I was now after finishing this book. I wanted to scream and cry so hard but it was 2 AM now. My chest hurt from the sadness this book brought me. If it was possible, I wanted to dive into the book and made Logan and Daisy never met. This story was so unfair for both of them and everyone in this book. My throat was so tight now because the pressure I had to try not to cry again. How could this book made me so mad, sad, and miserable all at once? I hate this book so much I need to give it 5 stars because I am a masochist.
Thank you to H. Pearce, Victoria Editing, and NetGalley for the ARC.
I think I felt every emotion whilst reading this book. Themes of love, grief, trauma, mental health.
Wonderfully written. This is the first book I have read by H. Pearce but will be hunting down more!
Daisy and Logan, 2 characters who keep meeting each other through a period of time. Who you feel for but also get frustrated at them because of the circumstances and them not telling each other their true feelings.
This book is all about having a connection with someone but it always being the wrong time. You're rooting for the main characters to be with one another but it sadly never happens for them.
I wanted this to have a happy ending so bad, but then I also think that was too predictable. so in a way I'm glad it didn't end that way but also sad about the way it did!
Thank you to H.Pearce, Victoria Editing and Netgalley for the ARC.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC. Wow what an absolute tearjerker of a ride. Thought I would start this short story with a cuppa this morning. Literally could not put it down and read it within an hour and half. A story about soulmates that come together with missed chances and unspoken feelings. Top stars for me, absolutely loved the style of writing and I’m checking out what else this author has written.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from The Last One but it completely broke me. What’s starts as innocent strangers having a connection, turns into a bond never on the right timeline. The words, the way the author connected the POV’s to include both was beautiful. You see the raw emotion each is feeling throughout their crossroads. Years worth of “not being friends”, you see Daisy and Logan bond over the simple conversations and instant connection.
Daisy and Logan - may you both have peace with your love.
This was my first book that didn’t have a happy ending. The finch will forever have a place in my heart 🐦⬛

"The Last One" by H. Pearce is a deeply moving and thoughtfully crafted contemporary romance that truly resonated with me, earning a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
This isn't just a love story; it's a poignant exploration of life's complexities, and I found myself completely drawn into its emotional currents.
What truly stands out in this novel is its profound emotional depth. H. Pearce masterfully delves into the characters' inner worlds, making their joys, struggles, and heartbreaks feel incredibly real and raw. You genuinely feel for Daisy and Logan as they navigate their individual paths and their intertwined destinies.
The central themes of fate and timing are woven throughout the narrative with such grace and impact. The story beautifully illustrates how moments of connection, ambition, and unforeseen events can shape a relationship across years, sometimes bringing people together and sometimes pulling them apart. The journey over the years that Daisy and Logan undertake is compelling, showcasing the evolution of their lives and feelings in a very authentic way. It's a testament to the idea that love isn't always easy or perfectly timed.
Beyond the rich emotional landscape, the book is simply beautifully written. H. Pearce's prose is evocative and flows seamlessly, drawing you into every scene and every feeling. This elegant writing style elevates the story, making even the quiet moments feel significant. For readers considering this book, here are some key elements and potential content warnings:
Tropes You'll Find: * Missed Opportunities / Right Person, Wrong Time: The core of their enduring connection. * Fated Love / Destiny: A strong underlying theme guiding their paths. * Second Chance Romance: They reconnect and face their past after periods apart. * Slow Burn: The relationship develops over a significant span of time. * Dual Timeline: The story often shifts between past and present to tell their full journey. Potential Trigger Warnings (Please be aware): * Grief / Loss of a loved one: The story deals with significant loss and its aftermath. * Mental Health Themes: As Logan is a neuroscientist, mental health struggles (either his own or those he's helping) are a thematic element. * Past Trauma: Characters experience past events that have deeply shaped them. * Accidental death/injury: A pivotal tragic event occurs that impacts their lives.
While the emotional intensity might be a lot for some readers, and the nature of missed opportunities can be bittersweet, "The Last One" offers a powerful and unforgettable experience. If you appreciate contemporary romance that explores the deeper complexities of love, destiny, and the beautiful, messy journey of life, "The Last One" is a must-read.

The Last One" by H. Pearce is a compelling and emotional romance that beautifully explores the complex features of fate, timing, and the profound connections that shape our lives. The story introduces us to Daisy Jenkins, a rising journalist, and Logan Blake, a brilliant neuroscientist. Their initial encounter, an interview that Daisy conducts with Logan, sparks an obvious connection. However, life, ambition, and unexpected circumstances unfortunately keep them apart, leading them on a delicate dance of missed chances and unspoken feelings across years and continents, from the busy streets of London to the calm landscapes of Sicily. Pearce skillfully weaves a story that highlights the push and pull between two individuals who are clearly meant to be together, yet consistently find themselves just out of reach. The novel excels in portraying the emotional depth of Daisy and Logan's relationship, making their journey feel authentic and relatable. I found myself cheering for them, experiencing their triumphs and heartbreaks alongside them. The exploration of men's mental health through Logan's work adds a thoughtful layer to the story, grounding the romance in a contemporary and meaningful context. This element adds richness to the characters and provides a strong foundation for their motivations and struggles. While the story is undeniably a romance, it's also a journey of personal growth and reinvention for both Daisy and Logan. They navigate their individual careers, face personal challenges, and learn from their experiences, all while the unspoken connection between them silently guides their paths. The culmination of their story in New York, where tragedy strikes, serves as a powerful turning point, forcing Daisy to confront a truth that has been quietly shaping their lives all along. This moment brings a significant emotional weight to the story, leading to a lovely and satisfying resolution. "The Last One" is a beautifully written and engaging novel that will appeal to readers who enjoy contemporary romance with depth and emotional resonance. H. Pearce delivers a story about the enduring power of connection, the complexities of human relationships, and the idea that sometimes, the most profound truths are the ones we've known all along.
Thank you to Victory Editing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
This was my very first experience reading a novella, and I’ll admit I approached it with a degree of hesitation. I wasn’t sure how a shorter format could deliver the emotional depth and narrative satisfaction I usually seek in a longer novel. But to my surprise, it absolutely did. The prose is sharp, evocative, and beautifully economical. Each word is chosen with care and carries emotional weight that lingered long after I’d turned the last page. I found myself both immersed and invested, devouring the story in a single sitting because I simply couldn’t put it down.
That said, there were moments where I struggled to fully connect with the narrative. This is more a reflection of my personal preference than any flaw in the writing. I tend to gravitate toward stories that offer deep character exploration, and this one left a few emotional corners unexplored. There was a “fill-in-the-blanks” feel at times where I longed for just a little more insight into the characters’ inner lives.
Even with that in mind, I can't justify rating this anything less than ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. The writing itself is utterly captivating, and the story stayed with me in a way that speaks volumes.
This was my first time reading this author, and I can say with confidence it absolutely won’t be my last.
This book is a moving and heart-rending story of two star-crossed soulmates, Logan Blake, a neuroscientist, and Daisy Jenkins, a newspaper reporter, who were never fated to stay together as a couple.
When Logan and Daisy met each other initially and intermittently afterwards, they felt they had a profound attachment to each other based on mutual acceptance and understanding, but they never acknowledged or expressed it verbally to one another. However, they repressed their emotion, but it never did disappear.
When feelings are suppressed, it is manifested in many ways, impacting both mental and physical well-being and influencing how a person interacts with the world.
As the title implies, the author was alluding to the couple's final opportunity to reveal their true feelings. the last one shot at happiness, and the chance to connect with each other's essence before misfortune strikes.
H. Pearce had an inimitable style of writing that brings out strong images and evocative emotional responses. Her words flowed effortlessly and captured the core of a love story that resonated with the readers. This classic narrative has a definitive touch of an unforgettable romantic tragedy.
I hate to rate this a 3 because based off of the author’s actual writing, she is so incredibly talented. It’s the story and how it unfolds that makes me want to rip my damn hair out. The writing was undeniably beautiful. It sucked me in immediately and until the 50% mark I couldn’t put the book down. The Duel POVs were very well done and I liked how they overlapped so we got both perspectives on the same scene. Surprisingly, I didn’t hate the third person narration either. It somehow worked really well with this story. I think there are people who will love this book, unfortunately, I am not one of those people. I absolutely hated it. I was left feeling angry, frustrated, sad, and ironically depressed- considering the author is a mental health advocate. I could go into detail about why this story elicited all of the above emotions from me but I don’t want to give away spoilers. I say give this book a chance and if you don’t mind the “tag your it” back and forth, never seems to progress and go anywhere, romance than keep reading because you will probably love this book. If you find yourself not vibing with the book than let me save you the frustration and DNF it because it never gets better, it only gets worse.
Wow, few books leave me struggling with my thoughts at the ending but this one did 4 stars for the writing and for the FEELS it made me feels but honestly this is probably a 2 star story for me
SPOILERS: Logan and Daisy meet in their early twenties and feel a spark, a connection but life pulls them in opposite directions. The bump into each other every couple of years, sometimes on accident, sometimes planned, sometimes through email but they are never allowed to be together. Logan gets married at one point hoping he’ll fall in love with his wife but after a few years he realizes that’s not fair to her and set her free. Daisy also gets married to the right guy at the right time but he is severely wounded in the military and she essentially looses him as a human and looses the life she thought they were building. During her darkest days, she reaches out to Logan for companionship and to just feel human again. They never cross any lines. The final scene is them admitting how much they love each other but that he is moving to America to put distance between then, but then he dies in an accident.
This was frustrating and sad. The characters chased happiness their whole lives and never really found it.

The Last One broke my heart. It’s a short book, but it hits hard.
Daisy Jenkins is a rising journalist, and Logan Blake is a neuroscientist trying to change the way people talk about men’s mental health. When Daisy interviews him, she doesn’t expect to feel such a strong connection, but it’s there. Over the years, as their lives take them all over the world, they keep crossing paths. The timing is never right, but the feelings never really go away.
This story feels so real. Daisy and Logan have the kind of love that almost happens, but not quite. You keep hoping they’ll figure it out, even though deep down you know how it ends.
The book deals with tough, emotional things like grief, motherhood, love, and mental health. It’s honest, messy, and deeply moving. H. Pearce somehow packed all of that into just over 200 pages. I read it all in one sitting, and by the end, I had tears in my eyes.
This isn’t a fairytale romance. It’s the kind of love story that stays with you. If you’ve ever cared deeply for someone but never got the chance to be with them, this book will hit home.

This is the book that tells the reader to stop and pay attention to whatever is right in front of you! This story is a slow burn that speaks to long time connections and lingers with you. Took me a few to really think about this review. We all want to believe there is someone out there. Someone that is made just for us. This book goes there. SLOW SLOW BURN. No insta love. Daisy and Logan bring thoughts of fate to my mind. Meeting one another time and again. They never really say how they feel to each other (I did find this a bit frustrating at times). So much a right person but the wrong time circumstance in this book. The characters are very well developed. The plot is well structured, but the pace is very slow. If you love a good slow burn, this is a book you will thoroughly enjoy. I didn't expect the unhappy ending. I haven't read many that don't end on a happy note. Lots of emotions, very raw. Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book! Happy Reading!
And then there are the books that leave you gasping for air because of the strong emotions they evoke. This book is on the shorter side by Pearce has packed it so full of beautifully written characters and a powerful story that the reader is fully immersed and invested. I would say this book ranks top in books on mental health, grief, loss, love found in the midst of it all, and of true humanity. This is a book that will leave you contemplating it's themes, its characters, its plot and sub=plots long after you read the last page. And perhaps you will be the reader that thumbs back through it, just wondering, just thinking, just....well just recovering from the intense emotions.
I will say this book deals with some weightly things and those who choose to read it should take heed to trigger warnings. Read with care, and if you can't handle it (just put it aside).
Side note: I would put H. Pearce with authors like Nicole Fiorinna (Stay with Me trilogy) and K.M. Moronova (The Fabric of our Souls) - though the setting is different.
The Last One is the second novella by H. Pearce that I have had the pleasure and privilege to have received and read as an advanced reader’s copy provided to me by BookSirens. My review is VOLUNTARY.
As with the first novella, One Year, this tiny tome had me in its grip from its first word to its last. I love the way Ms. Pearce writes and the way she carefully constructs her stories. In both novellas the chapters alternate between the thoughts and actions of its two main protagonists who initially meet on a work assignment and coincidentally meet time and again across decades, with occasional, deliberate contact between them. Although both feel an intense and immediate connection and attraction that never is extinguished nor acted upon, they maintain a connection until they no longer can. The story is heartbreakingly sad throughout, as neither act upon their desires for each other, and as life moves on around them. The ending left me melancholy, which is a rare occurrence.
Thank you @NetGalley and @VictoryEditingNetGalleyCoOp for this ARC! Thank you to @EarlyReviewers as well for choosing me to receive and review this book.
We follow the life of Daisy and the life of Logan and how their lives somehow intermingle and they keep coming back to each other. While living separate lives most of their life, they continue to run into each other, email back and forth, and continue their day to day. So many event occur in their lives and yet, they come back to each other. In a story of love, grief, death, marriage, divorce, parenthood, and military life, you learn to fall in love with each character separately but then all together too. It’s is beautifully written to keep the reader wanting to know more and pulls you in till the very end.
I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves a slow burn that helps you learn to love the journey of your life, one choice at a time!
Have your tissues ready—this one will make you ugly cry.
This book devastated me—in the best way. I was completely invested in the love story between Daisy Jenkins and Logan Blake. It’s a story of missed chances, where love blossoms into a beautiful friendship, only to become a reflection of the paths not taken when life has other plans.
The Last One is an emotional journey that will leave you aching for what could have been. H. Pearce captures the complexity of timing, circumstance, and the quiet pain of almost-love. I loved how the story walked us through both Daisy and Logan’s lives, showing how deep and enduring their connection was, even as it evolved.
In the end, love does win—but not in the way we hoped. And that’s what makes this story unforgettable.
Thank you, NetGalley, for this ARC. Truly an unforgettable story.
Good lord, this book is an emotional roller coaster ride. This novella follows Daisy and Logan and we get to experience their yearning, trauma, sadness, hopelessness and intermittent moments of happiness together. I really loved their relationship even though they always seem to be ships passing in the night. The end of this book is a definite tear jerker so bring your tissues. Also ignore me over here in the corner crying and hugging my pillow.
Be prepared to finish this book in one sitting because you will not be able to put it down. This is my first read from this author and I can say that it definitely won't be my last.

"Sometimes, we settle for what we think we deserve and not what we need".
The chapters alternate between Daisy, a journalist for The Daily and Logan, a well-known neuroscientist being interviewed for his fundraising. After a brief meeting when they were young, the story follows them through their adult years and their brief encounters and email exchanges. Both live very different lives, and go on to experience various trials and tribulations through adulthood. Focusing on love, loyalty and the power of time, sometimes the one person you want is the one person you can't have. This is one of the most powerful books I've ever read; I struggled to put it down. It's thought-provoking, tear-jerking and incredibly well-written. An absolute must-read.
I really enjoyed this novella, but it left me wanting more. This easily could’ve been a full length novel, as I was drawn in by the story and the emotional rollercoaster near the end. Overall, I enjoyed the 2 POVs of the main characters, although at times it did feel repetitive and not always something new was added to the scene. The story throughout was emotional, tragic, heartbreaking, but left me feeling a bit hopeful for the main character. I will definitely check out other works by the author after this! 📚 I’d recommend this book for anyone looking for strangers to lovers, SLOW burn, yearning… but also tragedy, depth, and missed opportunities . ✨ Thank you Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
Daisy is an up and coming journalist who has an appointment to interview Logan a neuroscientist. They both experience an instant attraction and throughout their lives they occasionally and accidentally happen to meet. The connection is powerful and told on dueling timelines. A tragedy brings them together and they admit their feelings though they are never acted upon.
I am not normally attracted to books in the genre and this one is an exception. It is a powerful story with very likable characters. I did something I’ve never done before and have marked all the books by this author as books I want to read.
This novella took me on such a ride—Daisy and Logan’s story is full of yearning, heartbreak, trauma, and those fleeting but beautiful moments of hope and connection. Their relationship pulled me in completely, even as they kept missing each other like ships passing in the night. It’s raw, emotional, and deeply affecting.
The ending? Total tearjerker. Have tissues nearby, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself curled up hugging a pillow like I did.
I flew through this in one sitting—it’s impossible to put down once you start. This was my first read by this author, and it definitely won’t be my last.
On the surface it looks like a story of missed opportunities, a man and woman attracted to each other but circumstances never being right for a relationship to develop. But it' s far more than that. Daisy marries a man somewhat impulsively and finds out he has sustained devastating injuries in an IED attack. The story becomes one of duty: a woman's need to pick up the pieces, no matter the cost to her. From the initial premise of a superficial meet cute that never goes anywhere,, The Last One delivers a powerful punch that will stay with me.
Important lesson here is to let your feelings and thoughts be known. Don't wait until it's too late! I couldn't put the book down last night. . . . was too eager to know how this story would end. The two main characters just couldn't get timing and the stars to align even though they were both in love with each other. I know what I hoped for, but this was heartbreaking and completely not how I imagined it would end. If you enjoy an emotional read and a book that will stay with you, then you'll really enjoy this!
