Get Them Back! [Manésvella]

Getting even was supposed to be simple.

Aqilah had one goal: write the perfect love letter to her crush, Syazwan. Easy, right? Wrong. Instead of a heartfelt reply, he humiliates her in front of the whole school. Now, she’s out for payback. Meanwhile, Isyraf is done being the punchbag of his ex, Batrisyia.

When rumours fly that Syazwan and Batrisyia might be a thing, Aqilah and Isyraf strike an unlikely deal: team up, take them down, and show the school’s golden boy and queen bee they aren’t untouchable.

“You’re overthinking this.” – Isyraf

“I’m being smart. I can’t have a loose end!” – Aqilah

“I am your loose end.” – Isyraf

But revenge isn’t as sweet as it seems. As things spiral, Aqilah starts questioning what she’s really fighting for.

“There’s no ‘next time’. We failed!” – Aqilah

“Oh, so you’re backing out because the man you’re in love with will be in love with you in the future?” – Isyraf

Between dramatic schemes, late-night plotting sessions, and accidental heart to-hearts, Aqilah begins to wonder: what if the real prize isn’t revenge, but something completely different?

This book is perfect for school kids.

It tells the story of Aqilah who wants revenge after being humiliated during assembly.

But I found it funny... ermmm.. surely Syazwan can’t be that clueless, right? He just read the whole letter without stopping even though it was obviously long and not that important. He could’ve just stopped halfway!

Because of that Aqilah ended up with the nickname “Love Letter Girl” all over school.

Then there’s Batrisyia who’s apparently dating Syazwan. When Aqilah tries to prank Syazwan... someone else gets caught in the crossfire.

Lastly Aqilah starts to change and regrets what she did.

As for Puan Kamsiah, she seems a bit biased.. some students only get punished for a week but Aqilah has to endure it for months!

Overall, it’s a lighthearted read about school life and teenage drama.

I love the ending!!! I love to see Aqilah's character growth. When i read the part "validation from someone", I feel that. I used to have that kind of feeling while I'm teenager. I want to be accepted by many friends till I reach certain age, I felt like, I no longer need to prove myself better, I feel so grateful to live with the best version of myself. And I'm proud of that.

So to Aqilah, if you read this, you are the best version of yourself. I'm so proud of you. And to author, I want a sequel hahahahah.

A funny and enjoyable story. Would have loved this more if I were younger. And I love the moral of the story. And the end? Sometimes love does not have to be loud

Aqilah is a 16-year-old girl who ends up in an unfortunate situation: a love letter she was passing to a boy she fancies gets accidentally read aloud to the entire school during an assembly. What starts as a minor misfortune quickly spirals into her most humiliating moment—and it fuels her need to avenge the tragedy.

How? By placing most of the blame on the letter’s supposed recipient (who, by the way, is also the poor soul who unwittingly read it out loud on the mic). Aqilah then teams up with a senior a year older to scheme some pretty questionable things in order to “get back” at… well, the people she thinks are out to get her.

Or so that’s the premise. But the more you try to rationalize the characters’ motives and logic, even through a teen lens, the more you’ll find yourself scratching your head. We’ve all been there—we were all once hormonal teens making impulsive decisions based on assumptions, without bothering to fact-check. But Aqilah’s thought process demands a heavy dose of belief suspension. And strangely enough? That’s not too hard to do.

Because Aqilah (and most of the characters here) doesn't give you much to root for. Her motivations lack depth, and her actions often feel hollow. So it’s hard to feel grounded or truly invested in her journey. Reading this book is like watching a chaotic TV show where you're not emotionally attached, but you're definitely here for the drama—munching on popcorn while all the ish hits the fan. It’s wildly entertaining and perfect for killing time.

That said, I do wish the writer would pay a bit more attention to some of the repetitive expressions—characters tend to “slap their heads” a lot, and there are quite a few instances of “doing raspberry,” which start to feel a bit overused. A few moments also read vaguely, like when a character is described as “sounding like Lorde”—I paused and genuinely wondered what that meant. Lorde’s singing voice is iconic, sure, but in speech? What does “sounding like Lorde” in conversation actually sound like? That kind of description needed just a little more clarity.

And that is what I want to truly commend the author for. You can tell she is really. A. Good. Writer. Technically, at least. Not once did I feel the writing was over-stylized, rushed, or dragged out. Farhah knows how to keep the plot moving and the reader seated. The plot itself? Fun as hell. The dialogue is sharp, believable, and full of energy. The prose has that unputdownable quality. I devoured it in one sitting—outside, at the mall, no less.

At the end of the day, I always say this: I respect any book that gives me a good time, even if I didn’t fall in love with it. And this was a good time. I didn’t slog through it, it didn’t waste my time, and it wasn’t trying to be anything it’s not. So kudos, Farhah! I’d love to see her write more—dramatic, juicy, messy stuff especially—but hopefully next time, with a main character I can deadass root for from start to finish, no matter how messy she is.

3.5 stars!

Get Them Back! By Farhah Dhamirah

Imagine this: you've just written the perfect love letter and bravely handed it to your crush. But instead of a sweet reply, your crush humiliates you in front of the entire school. 😩😭

Well, that's exactly what happened to Aqilah.

Meanwhile, Isyraf is done by being the punching bag of his ex. Tired and fed up, he crosses paths with Aqilah and together, they hatch a plan for: revenge.

Mission:
- Operation Chemical Chaos
- Glitter Bomb
- Operation Monday Assembly

Will they be able to take their revenge successfully or falling in love instead?

Since this book is about highschool students, it somehow reminds me of my highschool life. Siapa je tak ada crush kan dulu time sekolah! 😜

For me, this book is such a light read for me. I've read this book in one sitting and I'm quite enjoyed reading it.

However, I feel like the chemistry between Aqilah and Isyraf wasn’t as cute or fluffy as I expected. They don't have many scene together. It's chaos and slowburn. Maybe that’s because the author focused more on the revenge and frienship plot rather than the romance, which is understandable. The butterflies moment only really came toward the end of the story. It would’ve been nice to have more scenes of them together after SPM—we need GTB 2! 😩🙏

To me, this book is more about friendship, trust, personal growth, and forgiveness. Aqilah’s character development, how she acepting her fault and seek forgiveness to others.

Sometimes, revenge isn't a good idea... and this story subtly reminds us of that. While Get Them Back starts with chaos and hilarious payback missions, it ends with a bigger message which is hurting others won’t truly heal your own pain.

"𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐱 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧."

Aqilah and Isyraf may have be partner in crime for revenge, but what they really found was friendship, healing, and a new beginning. In the end, it’s not about getting even—it’s about moving forward.

Overall, if you’re looking for a high school story that’s chaotic, a little dramatic, and has just the right amount of heart—Get Them Back! is worth picking up. 💌

I was contemplating in either to give this book a 3 or 4 stars review, but then I've decided to go with a range around 3.5 to 3.8 hahah

Before I get into details what ick this book has, I would like to mention that this plot actually deserves more pages — another book, a sequel maybe.

I would love to read more about Aqilah's story in the future; maybe like during her university years or after that even. I like the character growth from her side. It might seem cliche but that's the reality.

Other than that, I got distracted a lot when starting this book because of its tenses.

"This was her only chance..." would be correct if she had done the action, but since it's an attempt — an action — that will be made in the future, it should've been "This is her only chance..."

I'm not a professional editor myself so please, just take this with a grain of salt. I'm sure this book review can be taken as feedback to improve in the future, for myself as well.

Overall, the plot and flow are amazing and not confusing. Great for calm reading in the evening heheh.

Aqilah, a 16 year old girl ends up getting humiliate by the whole school when her crush accidentally read her love letter out loud during the assembly. This minor misfortune turns into Aqilah’s need to avenge the tragedy.

The storyline and character development (towards the end) is kinda good. It’s a very light read - though I’m not too keen on the revenge plot but still, I quite enjoyed reading the novel. The book emphasises on friendship, self growth, and to be better version of yourself. As much as I like reading this, some of the scenes are quite repetitive, hence I kind of skipped some pages. And when I read this novel, though I’m not attached emotionally, but still it succeed in keeping me entertained.

Aqilah x Isyraf - I don’t really feel the chemistry between them (since I thought they will be the endgame). And, I was hoping for much more scenes of them being together - when they realised their feelings for each other, but I guess open ending is a thing now

I read this 3 days ago, this book is suitable for high schoolers, with its setting and theme. I like that it focuses on prank/bullying, as this happens a lot in real life at school. I personally think the public humiliation didn't justify the revenge Aqilah sought, especially since Syazwan was also a victim and was nice throughout the book. I liked him! But the message about accountability on Aqilah's part, as well as the favouritism and bias issues among teachers toward students, is an important lesson for us to learn. I recommend this book to young readers 👍

If you are still in school, 16 and below, I would love to recommend this book to you! 💃🏻

I might've enjoyed it very very much if I was 16 hoho. A fun and fast-paced read! Oh and I actually guessed the ending right with 100 pages to go when I predicted where the story was heading ><

I hate to admit that I watched a lot (like a lottt) of American teenage dramas throughout my undergraduate studies, to the point of me actually enjoying this kind of story. Well, what is life without some teen dramas? 😌

love that it give the vibes of coming of age, romcom and the kind of 2000s movie that shared the similar vibes with mean girls and etc

love that throughout the 300 pages it gives good flow. from what caused aqilah's revenge-her preparing it-the damage done-how she redeem back for the damage that has been done

the relationship between the ML and FL is good too. tak rasa rush

cuma ending tu je laaa tak puas sikit. lovey dovey sepanjang novel alih-alih hujung dia gitu je

this book is the literal epitome of roller coaster ride , but it is what makes the book soooo interesting. the character development in every chapters and the plot ?!?!?!?! literally what keeps me captivated into finishing this book . to have a guy that shoots an entire horror short film just to confess to me. and i return his confession by making a basketball machine and balloons filled love letters <3 AHHHH literally one of the cutest novel i’ve read so far ! the romance is sooo slight in this book but somehow it manages to catch my heart ,and not to mention, taylor swift’s songs as reference in this book ??? especially better than revenge ?? easily a 5/5 from me !!
