LIBERTY

Rate this book
Prom at the Statue of Liberty was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for 17-year-old seniors Alex, Gianna, Julio, Marty, and Sarah in this high-stakes young adult thriller.

Not that they're all friends. Julio is a jerk jock who bullies Marty and makes him do his homework. Sarah thinks Marty and Alex are dweebs. And Gianna is invisible to most of Edison Village High as the quiet weirdo.

What awaits them at prom is more dangerous than high school drama. It's Dr. Clayton Brushwood, a deranged terrorist who orchestrates a hostage crisis. All in a plot to bring America to its knees.

Now, five kids who started the night hating each other must band together, trust one another, work, and believe in each other to save both their friends and the country. To become the last defenders of LIBERTY.

Perfect for fans of One of Us Is Lying, The Breakfast Club, Alex Rider, and Die Hard. LIBERTY is an action-adventure story about unlikely courage and friendship that doesn't let up till the last sentence.

I’ll be honest—I wasn’t sure this book was going to be for me. It’s YA, and I’m a 40-something reader who usually doesn’t reach for high school drama and prom night chaos. The first few chapters felt a bit repetitive, and the lack of section breaks made it a little hard to settle into. But once I hit around the 70% mark, I found myself really curious about how these five teens—who didn’t even like each other at the start—would figure out a way to stop the madness.

Dr. Brushwood, the villain, was definitely over the top, but his actions definitely kept things interesting. I was a little put off by the way he called everyone "Bro," but I guess that was his personality quirk (and I'm probably just old lol).

The 5 teens all had their own quirks as well, and it was cute trying to see how they would work through their differences to be able to save everyone. Towards the end, I was more invested than I expected. The final moment actually brought a tear to my eye—it was surprisingly touching and gave each of them a moment of heart.

Not really my genre but I did enjoy the read. Quick enough to finish over a weekend, and worth picking up if you like high-stakes YA thrillers with a dash of unexpected emotion.

This YA thriller is set on prom night in New York City and follows the story of five teenagers with very little in common who must come together to save the world. Marketed as a mix of Die Hard and The Breakfast Club, that description perfectly captures the vibe of this book. It delivers a strong blend of high-stakes action and suspense, all wrapped in classic high school drama.

Some elements felt a bit over the top—particularly the villain, who came across as a little cartoonish. That said, it didn’t take much away from the story; in fact, it added a kind of exaggerated flair that could work really well in a different medium. This leads me to think it would make an incredible graphic novel. The snappy dialogue and dynamic action sequences are so visually driven, I could easily imagine them playing out in illustrated panels. Still, the book stands strong on its own—just a thought!

Not my normal read as I don’t read YA but I do love a thriller occasionally! This book was a quick read. Some parts in the beginning were a little repetitive and some transitions made me have to reread a paragraph but I did like the book over all. I really enjoyed most of the characters; I mean the villains were what you want in villains and the heroes weren’t your every day heroes. It was fun to watch five unlikely people come together to do what needed to be done to survive. I did find myself wanting to keep reading because I needed to know how they were going to pull their plan off! If you or your kid is looking for a quick thriller that will keep your attention till the end, this one is for you! 😊 Thank you Dr Perry Norris for allowing me an ARC of this book!

This book was everything I wanted and didn't know I needed. Before reading it, I was told it was comparable to Die Hard x Breakfast Club. That comparison is spot on. You have the cliche high school cliques and roles that are forced to befriend and work together to overcome a spectacular event. When an evil genius shows up to overtake prom and attempt the largest terrorist attack on the country all in one fell swoop. The students unite and defy the odds to take part in the most epic adventure possible. This book is short, action packed, and absolutely worth the read. I hope it gets picked up to make a movie and the movie is just as good as the book. Absolutely epic.

This was such an intense short YA fiction novel! Fast paced. Thrilling. Action movie potential! Writing style could improve, though.

Although the writing is fast-paced, the way the multiple POVs are written sometimes doesn't feel fluid. You rapidly jump from one perspective to the others throughout each chapter, instead of a chapter being dedicated to a certain POV. You get used to it as you read, but it feels like you're experiencing whiplash trying to keep up with who's perspective it is, with no headings, paragraph or page breaks to separate them.

Overall, entertaining with cinematic potential.

I don't normally read YA books, not for any particular reason, I just hadn't picked one up in a while. I read a lot of crime fiction. I will first say if you're a YA reader or new to crime or action then this would be PERFECT for you.
I found the book quite fast paced which to me isn't a bad thing - I struggle with my attention span so this being fast paced actually worked out for me. I've not read a book with a plot like this, it's a unique story that I really enjoyed. The character development was great, the unlikely friendship was heart warming. Just the right amount of heartbreak, the villain was well written, I hated him! I read 90% of this book in one sitting, could not put it down.

Prom night was supposed to be magical more so when it was at the Statue of Liberty. But when it all flips over and it becomes chaos that's when it all starts going downhill. The civilians in the story are the ones you can imagine just bad people doing bad things. But your heroes? You will never guess who they are. It was thrilling, it was fast-paced, it was good. Recommended!

I was lucky to get the opportunity to read this book, and it's marketed as a mix of Die Hard and the breakfast club, and I will say that it's pretty accurate, some "high school drama" mixed with some "hostage party". the book kept me my attention all the way, I read the book in one sitting.
