Rate this book
This is a book about the History of Russia and the Russian people. Centuries before the Eastern Slavs established their first major political entity (Kievan Rus’), the East European Plain, and especially the territory of modern day Ukraine, was inhabited by a variety of Indo-European and Indo-Aryan tribes (in addition to those making up the Eastern Slavs), including the Scythians (600BC to 200BC), Goths, Avars, Magyars and Huns (100 to 900AD). This book traces the history of Russia and her people from these earliest days, when they struggled to form their first polity, and follows their journey through the middle ages, through the Bolshevik Revolution, the Great War, rise and fall of the Soviet Union, and the reemergence of Russia as a world power under Vladimir Putin. This book contains the following chapter 1.Origins2.The Early Centuries3.Ivan the Great4.Ivan IV5.After Ivan the Great and the False Dmitriys 6.The Romanovs Enter History7.Peter the Great8.Interim After Peter9.Catherine the Great10.Tsar Paul11.Tsar Alexander I12.Tsar Nicholas I14.Tsar Alexander II19.Tsar Alexander III20.Tsar Nicholas II21.Aleksandr Kerensky22.The Bolshevik Revolution23.The Civil War24.The NEP and Rebuilding the Economy25.The Post-Lenin Interim and the Rise of Stalin26.How the Cold War Started27.Nikita Khrushchev28.Leonid Brezhnev29.Yuriy Andropov30.Konstantin Chernenko31.Mikhail Gorbachev32.Perestroika 33.Glasnost 34.Demokratizatsiya 35.Boris Yeltsin36.Vladimir Putin

Mark me naive, but I didn't realize that Russian's were not European. I thought that they were, historically, with a detour caused by the Communist system. Not so. The Slavs and the Rus might live next door to Europe, but are in fact, not European. That explains a lot of the current world standings.

This is a very brief history... at only 132 pages. But is a good jumping off point for further enlightenment. I loved the longer view... the Romanov dynasty lasted 700 years... one family... more than twice as long as the entire history of the United States.
