Crowned starts out with these three words “Believe in yourself.” That’s what this book is about.
Quinn is a fairy with the dream of becoming the fairy princess. So she makes all the preparations. She gets her dress ready. She prepares her sceptre. She puts her crown on her head and then tries to think how to find a hero to make her into a queen. She goes in search of one kissing all the frogs, looking in all the mirrors and all the other things princesses have done in fairy tales. She doesn’t find one.
So when she comes upon an ogre, she takes matters into her own hands and stands up to him herself. All the fairies in the land decide to make her queen because she is brave and smart.
It’s then that Quinn realizes that all she had to do was believe in herself and she could reach for her dreams herself. She didn’t have to wait for someone to fulfill them.
I really enjoyed the rhyming style of this story. It helps make the story flow and is fun to read.
The pictures are a delight! I think they were my favourite part of the book.
The lesson about believing in yourself is so important for young girls. Believe in yourself. You don’t have to wait for someone to do it for you, just believe in yourself and reach for your dreams.
The best part of Julia Dweck’s books is the messages they have to teach young children. I rated Crowned 5 stars out of 5.
Thank you to the author for providing a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. A positive opinion was not required. All thoughts are my own.
Quinn is a fairy sprite who dreams of becoming queen. But how does one become a queen? All the books Quinn has ever read claim that damsels in distress are rescued by princes and then live happily ever after. Quinn’s search for a handsome prince is brought to an abrupt halt by a nasty two-headed ogre who threatens the safety of Fairy Land. Can Quinn summon the queen inside her heart to outwit this evil foe?
Hott Review: I really enjoyed this book. Julia Dweck’s verse coupled with Beth Trott’s amazing images takes readers young and old into a fairy world with the lovely Quinn. It is so refreshing to remind our children that they can do big things too. That we don’t need to be rescued is something that in sadly lacking in the education of many. I loved this small and utterly fun push in te right direction!
Excerpt: And suddenly, a dreaded sound, As something wicked stomped the ground. A gruesome ogre, wide and tall, And both heads said, “I’m King of all!” Now looking round, Quinn was alone. How could she stop it on her own? But fairies always locked their doors When ogres came to settle scores.

I love Quinn, and think she would make a great role model for little girls. The rhyming story is simple and easy to follow, and easy to read for young readers, as well. The illustrations are big and colorful, and simply adorable. Quinn shows that girls don't need to be "rescued" by boys, and that it's okay for them to be smart, brave, and independent.
There are a couple of activity pages at the end of the story as well. The one with various queens from history shows that there are/were REAL women like Quinn, which is a wonderful teaching point. The other, where children can find the hidden frogs, is fairly easy for the younger ones, and would aid in counting practice.
Highly recommended for anyone who has a young girl in their life.
