Disgraced distance running star Tripp Monday, after the death of his younger brother, spirals to rock bottom. Tripp fights with his personal demons and those trying to help him in his journey to regain not only his peak running form, but also find himself and become a good man once again.
A fascinating character study written by John P. Flynn
In the last year Tripp Monday's life has shattered, starting with being kicked off his professional running team and then ruminating on the death of his younger brother. Tripp's coping mechanism turns into alcohol abuse and drug usage. With his running career in ruins, and his personality change ostracizing him from his group of friends, Tripp moves out to Arizona, seeking a safe haven provided by Dave Dawson, the only person he ever really respected in life.
Once in Arizona, Tripp faces an internal battle, pitting his conditioned response of giving up on life against having the will to climb out of the hole he has dug himself into. His anger towards the unfairness in life, intensified by drug abuse and heavy drinking, provides extremely significant barriers for him to conquer. Through running, Tripp has a start on the path to recovery. With the Olympics drawing near, Tripp is pushed to work to qualify for the marathon race and represent team USA. A special group of people rally around Tripp, driving him to not only strive to qualify, but to ditch his destructive habits.
The rollercoaster ride of Tripp Monday is felt by all around him and the question of whether he can be saved or instead go into a life of misery and destitution is difficult to answer throughout his journey. Defining moments personally and from a running perspective will dictate the outcome of the man he will become.
