First book I have read by Neill Cameron. I loved it so much. The bit I loved in it most was the bit where the doughnut and the bagles were fighting... I am on the doughnut side.

This was quite funny and fun to read and I like the art + I need donuts now, but I had expected one story instead of short bits and bobs that connected in ways.
Oh, but I so love that the velociraptors looked like the way I know and love. Not those fluffy chickens.
And the how to draw bits were fun!

Ok lets do this:
For some strange reason I felt slightly offcut by the donuts especially Sprinkles. He is really dodgy. It seemed to me that the donuts were trying to brainwash me and the bagels were the real victims. Admittedly there were funny moments but I felt like some of the humour surrounding Spronky the Peculiar donut was a little forced. In the future I would like to learn more about the bagels including Platoon Commander Poppyseeds backstop.
Characters:
⋆.˚✮Sprinkles✮˚.⋆
5/10 there is just something so off abt this guy i feel like he is the secret mastermind behind it all and is trying to ethnically cleanse the bagels.
"Here! Study the face of the enemy [the bagels]..."
"Don't you think they look a bit like us?"
"No!! we are very different!"
He is obviously hiding something
⋆.˚✮Jammyboi✮˚.⋆
6.5/10 jammyboi is purely British and just there for comic effect but he comes across as rather arrogant as he is always smirking
⋆.˚✮Caramel Jack✮˚.⋆
9/10 PEAK CHARACTER CARAMEL JACK IS MY GUY THE ONLY PROBLEM IS HE ISNT IN IT ENOUGH. JUSTICE FOR CARAMEL JACK!!!!
⋆.˚✮Chalky✮˚.⋆
7/10 funny and deserves more pages
⋆.˚✮Justice donut✮˚.⋆
8/10 a hero fuelled by anger and or sadness we do not know. I would like to see justice donuts backstory in a future novel
⋆.˚✮Anxiety donut✮˚.⋆
5.5/10 slightly better than Sprinkles yet just as if not even more unnerving. Why is anxiety donut so anxious? What is she anxious about? What is she running away from? Could it be the guilt at helping to lead the charge against the innocent bagels????
⋆.˚✮Dadnut and lil timmy✮˚.⋆
7/10 educational!!!! Didn't and lil timmy are two of the donuts who aren't twats. Way to go!!
⋆.˚✮Spronky✮˚.⋆
5/10 he's just... there doing bizarre things as previously mentioned the spronky humour is a bit forced
⋆.˚✮Private plainbagel✮˚.⋆
8/10 he's so nonchalant and mysterious
⋆.˚✮sergeant sesamesead✮˚.⋆
9.99/10 his name is just *chefs kiss* WE NEED MORE BAGEL ACTION THE BAGELS ARE INNOCENT
⋆.˚✮Platoon Commander Poppyseed✮˚.⋆
10/10 he is a musunderstood soul using anger to try gain justice for his wronged race. THE BAGEL BATALLION WILL HAPPEN ABD THE DONUTS WILL PAY
⋆.˚✮That one ginger guy ✮˚.⋆
8/10 proof that the donuts are evil, just let my man have his glow up pleaaase!!

I will definitely buy the next one. I can hear my bank account crying. Overall good but needs character building👌

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (3.75)

A comic-style collection of short, character-focused stories following a chaotic donut squad. Each short is quick—usually one or two pages—and introduces different characters, mini-storylines, and absurd humor that keeps kids engaged.

What Worked
• Quick, bite-sized shorts: Perfect for kids who don’t want to commit to a long storyline, but still get to follow recurring characters.
• Colorful, lively illustrations: Keeps the pages visually engaging and playful.
• Silly, absurd humor: From over-the-top chaos to recurring gags like donuts attacking dieters or messy chocolate-filled shenanigans, the humor is ridiculous in a way that kids will enjoy.
• Interactive creative element: The simple tutorial at the end for creating your own characters encourages kids to engage creatively with the book.
• Flexible reading experience: Shorts can be read individually or together to follow a loose storyline, making it versatile for different attention spans.

What Didn’t Work
• Humor may not land for adults: Some characters’ antics and the absurdity are tailored to kids, so it might not click with older readers.
• British/American references mix: Terms like marmalade, cricket, or Prime Minister vs. president/White House may feel inconsistent or confusing for some readers.
• Certain graphic content: A few illustrations, like adult diaper jokes or implied risqué humor, may feel odd or off-putting.

This book is silly, fun, and chaotic—perfect for kids who enjoy quick, humorous reads and don’t need a fully linear storyline. The humor leans absurd, slightly potty-style, and over-the-top, which makes it great for readers who like Captain Underpants-style nonsense. The mini-storylines and interactive end pages make it engaging and playful, even if some of the references or jokes might fly over younger readers’ heads.

If you’re looking for a graphic novel to entertain kids with fast-paced humor, visual gags, and short, laugh-out-loud episodes, this one delivers. My son (10) finished it in a single day and laughed the whole way through, which says it all.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩)

This was such a fun read—and a huge hit in our house.

I read this with my 8-year-old, and what started as “just a few pages before bed” turned into us staying up to finish the entire book. It’s fast-paced, funny, and completely ridiculous in the best way.

Every page had him laughing (and me doing way too many donut voices), and the characters all have such distinct personalities that it never feels repetitive. The mini, episodic stories keep things moving, and the running jokes—especially the Bagel Battalion—really land.

What surprised me most was how engaging it was for a developing reader. My child typically prefers being read to, but with this one, he jumped in and read along—and I noticed a big boost in both confidence and fluency. That alone made this a standout for me.

The illustrations are bright, energetic, and packed with little details and jokes (keep an eye out for the background humor).

If you have a kid who loves silly humor, or a reader who needs something engaging and low-pressure, this is an easy recommendation. We’ll definitely be picking up the next one.

Thank you to NetGalley and First Second for an ARC to review. All opinions are my own.

Are you ready to meet the newest squad in the neighborhood? They are just like a variety of donuts you’d find in a staff lounge, one of everything! You have your classic sprinkles, seems innocent, but secretly plans to take over the world.. wait, what? Jam boi-a fan favorite, but always splatters and ruins everything. And then you have your Spronky donut-unknown flavor, tread carefully. You get the picture, all types of characters.

Flip through the different storylines as the donuts convince you they are the superior food until the bagel battalion infiltrates the story! The battle of donuts and bagels begins! Which round, doughy breakfast concoction will reign supreme?

Kids will love the silliness of this graphic novel. Ultimately it sets up for a sequel as a rematch seems inevitable.

I didn't know how much I needed to get into the minds of donuts who were taking over the world, but it turns out that in some ways, this was exactly what I needed.

This is my first exposure to this series and to these characters in general. I did come into this read anticipating a unified, more developed plot, but instead, there are a number of vignettes. I did enjoy getting to know the specifics of each donut's schtick, but I was left a little unfulfilled by the overarching storyline. This may be more a mismatch of expectations than anything else, but it's still a major takeaway.

The art is fun, the characters are wild, and I never eat donuts or anything close, but this left me with a major craving for them!

*Special thanks to NetGalley and First Second for this arc, which I received in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

A hundred stars. A million stars! We LOVED this book and will be buying a copy as soon as it’s available.

Donut Squad is a hysterical graphic novel told in mini comics about the adventures of the many donuts and their plight to take over the world. When the bagel battalion gets word of their plans, a fight for domination ensues.

This book is hilarious for children and adults alike. With bizarre “Far-Side-esque” comedy, these smart and witty jokes are a step up from the average graphic novel’s potty humor. Whether Dadnut is launching into a soliloquy about the Prussian War or Spronky is spreading butter on a cat, their absurd antics are guaranteed to get a laugh.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC! We can’t wait for the next Donut Squad book!

Donuts are trying to take over the world with their advertisements and yummy flavors, but their nemesis Bagels are not going to stand by and let it happen. Join this silly adventure as the donuts go head to head with bagels to keep the human race "healthy."

The colors and drawings of this graphic novel are topic notch and keep the reader interested. The plot does get a little lost at the beginning, but once the bagels enter the scene the story makes more sense. This story had my son rolling with laughter, while I rolled my eyes at some of the situations. Adults will shake their heads, but kids will absolutely embrace the silly.

This was surprisingly divisive. While I found the book repetitive and a bit of a slog to get through (though I will admit that it’s helpfully designed for expressive read-alouds with different character voices), the response from children was overwhelmingly positive. There were shrieks of “the best book ever!” at the end, followed immediately by independent re-reading, reading aloud to each other, and then drawing their own donuts.

Thanks to First Second and NetGalley for the advance reading copy.

Excellent silliness with clever writing and appealing illustrations. The strips work best when collected together, as you see simple gags repeat but with inventively different payoffs; and everything combines into a big meta-narrative at the end. My 8 year old and I had great fun reading it out loud!

A completely silly graphic novel about donuts? Sign me up. I got it for my younger kids, but the length meant a few rounds of reading. They loved it, though - the donuts vs. bagels plotline is captivating. Can't wait for a rematch!

¡Y qué bien me lo he pasado!
