Faced with the prospect of losing his kingdom, Ryneq gambles on a plan that could ultimately save Torsere, if they can stay alive long enough to see it through. This is it…the thrilling finale to this magical adventure. I consumed all three books back-to-back and loved the easy flow from one to another. The second book dazzled us with glamour and glee but I was braced for book three. It’s go time…everything is on the line. The kingdom, the people, and the dragons are all precariously hanging and the winner takes all. Seran has a powerful dark witch by his side and plans on securing his victory as soon as possible. However, King Ryneq isn’t going to fall without giving it all he has, including his life. Nykin struggles with putting the kingdom before his beloved but holds steady to his faith in their triumph. He’s pulled off a rescue mission before and he’ll do it again. Well, by the gods he hopes to.

What's to like: Whew! The pace is brisk but I was able to keep up without confusion. The plot is full but not overwhelming. The characters pull together and demonstrate the power of solidarity. The elves pledge their allegiance and stand ready, willing to fight till the end. The dragon riders, dragons, and army prepare to storm into the fray. The pages are brimming with courage and loyalty. The end is in sight…with only one conqueror. Eek! Jacobs delivers full-throttle with a heart-racing, nail-biting final act.

What's to love: Bonds, oh such beautiful bonds! New mates…their love may be relatively new but its intensity holds great power. A dragon rider and their dragon…these bonds hold insurmountable value and are treasured by all. Friends and allies…side by side they challenge the terrors raging all around them. Never doubt a bestie! Plan on excitement and sorrow. Prepare for pain and comfort. And finally, get ready for loss and love. I’d love to tell you more but seeing as this is the last book, I need to tread lightly. But I can promise you an energetic and entertaining journey…and I’m thrilled I didn’t miss it!

Beware of: Sequence dependent…you must read these in order. A fiery voyage that will keep you on the edge of your seat. And a sensational love story that you won’t soon forget!

This book is for: If you like a little magic and need a good binge, may I suggest this spellbinding trio? I mean, who wouldn’t want to fly with a dragon?!

A fitting and tension filled ending

Annabelle Jacobs wraps up this excellent high fantasy trilogy with a final book which is action packed and plot heavy.

Things move so rapidly from one beat to the next that it's like being taken on a blindfolded horseback ride with only a sure hand on the reins to keep on track.

Both Ryneq and Nykin have their own journey to undertake and the pressure on each of them is immense.

There are some sad losses along the way too and my heart was in my mouth for so much of this book.

No spoilers, but I felt the ultimate outcome had a good grounding in what had gone on before, no sudden deus ex machina to save the day.

I think there was scope for perhaps a bit more after the ultimate challenge and I still have a few questions left outstanding, but no quibbles about the main arc being nicely tied up.

As a finale, Alliance is a good book. There are points that are a little long winded and strained, but overall, I really, really liked this book. I love the series. The relationship between Ryneq and Nykin has continued to grow and progress and change as the books have moved on. The story had intensified and challenged me as a reader with each installment. This one was the most difficult to read in the manner of emotions. I’ve grown so attached to the characters and to find one a traitor broke my heart and to see others hurt or worse had me near tears. Jacobs did a great job in that sense with this series. The characters, including the dragons because they are very much characters in this series, are so well developed and amazing. I find myself engrossed in their stories every time I pick up one of the books. This book in particular because I’ve grown to know and love each and every one of them.

I really enjoyed the depth of this story. Like I said earlier, there were a few places I felt the story may have dragged a little, but looking back, I think it was needed for the plot. Closer to the end, everything comes so quickly and hits so hard and fast, I was thankful for those moments of downtime. The ups and downs of this book are critical. It seems like every time Ryneq catches a break the witch is two steps ahead of him. This is the darkest of the three stories in that it’s bleak and seems hopeless on all fronts. I had a hard time hoping for a happy ending at times, because the author did such a good job at hiding it.

Alliance is the third and final book in the Torsere series, and you get a fitting finale with a tense and twisted plot.

Ryneq and Nykin have made it back home to Torsere but their troubles are far from over. The witch they are dealing with now seems even worse than the one they just killed. No matter what they plan, she is three steps ahead. Of course, the reason why comes out and wasn't really a surprise but, still, who it was just added an extra layer of heartache to the story.

I will admit, this one had me in tears. It's darker than the others, with almost no hope of a happy ending, which, when it does happen, is full of non-stop action that will take your breath away. This book is not without loss, and it was so well-written! How the characters reacted was just superb! Yes, I know that sounds strange but read it for yourself and you'll see.

With excellent world-building, characters to love and hate, plus some steamy scenes, this trilogy has been outstanding. I have loved every moment and am sad to see it come to an end. This is one of those books you wish you could un-read, just so you have the opportunity to read it again with fresh eyes! Absolutely recommended by me!

2.5 rounded up

This was my least favorite in the trilogy, which is always a bummer when you end on a low note. Tonally, this book was a lot darker and grimer than the first two books, in a way that I was totally unprepared for based on what was set up in the first two. Yes, this is a war, but things got a lot more gruesome and depressing than what I felt the author had set us up for--I can handle dark when I'm expecting it, but this didn't feel in line with the first two books and thus took me off guard. I found Nykin to be a lot less likable as well--frequently over-reacting and misunderstanding his husband/not giving him the benefit of the doubt or understanding his position, which was not a cute look. I also thought the resolution, when we got there, felt super rushed leaving the ending ultimately unsatisfying. I found Nykin's weird and continual bondings to various elves to be such a weird plot point that was never addressed, and IDK, there was just a lot of stuff that I didn't like in this series that I was able to ignore in the first book, but by the time I got to book 3 was starting to be annoyed by.

After escaping Seran once then causing him to retreat in Alel, Nykin and Ryneq are back in Torsere with the expectation of a full blown war. Unfortunately, while the elves have offered their aid, Seran has such a vast army and a powerful witch at his side that being able to defeat them is unlikely. But Ryneq won’t give up and he’ll even make some hard choices to finally beat Seran. But when Ryneq is betrayed by someone close to him, all Torsere’s advantages are gone and it’s up to Nykin to make the ultimate sacrifice to put an end to the war.

I’ve been reading the Torsere series since it came out and eagerly awaiting the next installments. So, when I saw this was the last in the Torsere series, I was quite saddened because this has truly been an awesome series. In this book, as with the other two, it’s filled with a ton of suspenseful moments that kept me on the edge of my seat with its intensity. I loved that each book has it’s own major conflict but also that there’s an overall story arc that keeps them all connected. As this one is the final story, it’s the ultimate showdown between the key players in the game (I won’t say who, though!). A lot happens that makes the story very fast-paced and exciting. I won’t go into details because, one, I don’t want to spoil it for readers, but also because there’s just so much that happens that I think readers should discover each event as it takes place during the story. Trust me when I say, this book takes you on a wild ride and it’s not all about the war. It’s about Ryneq and Nykin’s relationship but also about Nykin and Fimor’s relationship, too.

As for the characters, if you’ve been following this series, you know that Nykin is an impulsive almost stubborn guy that once he sets his mind on something, he plans to follow through with it. At the start of the series, he was almost innocent but now he’s more assured of his place and taken to his role as king-consort quite well. Ryneq is still the serious King but now he’s feeling overwhelmed and almost helpless. This book, though, shines more light on their relationship, how new it still is and how they haven’t had much time to really ‘explore’ their relationship. They have a few rocky moments and feelings they have to work out but considering they’re at war, their stress is only highlighting those tough moments. I still adored them just as much as I did before. Ryneq is still somewhat jealous and possessive but he’s come to accept that Nykin is his and that won’t change. I just love them together so much! And I loved that their bond grows deeper with each day but also that Nykin included Ryneq more when it came to Fimor.

My only little niggle with this one is that there were moments when I wanted to be ‘reminded’ of what happened in past books. Such as when it mentions Thane’s injury or when certain people were mentioned. Unfortunately, I couldn’t remember what happened or who they were while reading so I was always curious to know more about those tiny details, which were never elaborated on. Also, while there is a glossary, it’s at the end of the book so I didn’t see it until I had finished reading, which wasn’t that helpful at that point :(

All in all, this was a fabulous conclusion to an already fantastic series. As far as I know, this is the conclusion of the Torsere series and while I’m sad to see them go, I’m quite happy with the way things ended. I do hope the author considers a spin-off because I’d love to see more of the dragon riders and the elves, especially if Jaken gets a story of his own!!

Another exciting and fun installment in a series that I always enjoy immensely. Book three maintains and increases the intensity of the previous books.

Ryneq and Nykin are still very much in love. They are so attracted to each other and affectionate. They don't waste time on petty crap, but appreciate their relationship and don't take one another for granted.

These poor guys can't seem to catch a break. Their romantic relationship began during a hostage situation and a seemingly impossible rescue mission. Their marriage began with the beginning of a war that threatens their kingdom. And now they've returned home from the elves kingdom to find themselves under siege and fighting a losing battle. I'm really hoping that we get another book where these men get to be happy and actually see who they are outside of the danger and war.

Things get dark for Ryneq and Nykin and they're separated. It's up to Nykin and Fimor to save the day again. Everyone must make serious and dangerous sacrifices.

Nykin and Fimor's bond is tested beyond anything they've experienced before, which for these two is saying a lot. The connection and love that they share is beautiful and beyond the magic that bonds them, they always choose each other.

This witch is even nastier and more dangerous than the one in the last book. The greed and desire of the evil bad guys for the dragons and their magic is outmatched only by the loyalty and devotion of the people of Torsere. I love that about them, there is never any question that they will do anything but fight to save the dragons. You have to respect a people who remain loyal in the face of such scary and dangerous threats.

There are a few moments throughout the book where things look hopeless and I was worried for them all. Everyone is in danger and there are painful losses. But there is also new love and deep friendships, and as always the magic of dragons.

An great series that is romantic and engaging . A world that is full of magic, elves and dragons! Stories of intrigue, war, friendship, and a love that has thrived in harsh adversity.

Original Blog Post: eARC Review & #Free eBook #Giveaway: Alliance (Torsere #3) by Annabelle Jacobs

We would like to thank author Annabelle Jacobs for donating an ebook copy of Alliance (Torsere #3), to 1 lucky commentator who gets chosen. Make sure to leave a comment below to get a free ebook copy of Alliance.

This is a story wrought with suspense, intrigue, action and heartache.

The finale to the Torsere series, author Annabelle Jacobs brings us back to the kingdom of Torsere where the young King Ryneq finds himself returning home from the back of the dragon Fimor. However, it is not a joyful homecoming for he and Nykin return with fear in their hearts: Seran's army is at their gates and the inevitable war is at hand.

There is a glimmer of hope on their side for elves are there to help them out. However, the witch they face has knowledge of the dark arts that involve both dragon and elven magic and it is unfortunate that the time of peace had given way to the forgetting of some knowledge that may harm both. The witch of Seran has this knowledge and is not hesitating to use it and it is causing death and mayhem.

Ryneq is at his wit's end, torn from the acceptance that Nykin has to go to war from the front lines with the other dragon riders sworn to protect the kingdom while wanting his consort to stay safe with him. Torn that he knows he has to protect his people and knowing that should the dragons fall to Seran's whims, the world as they know it would end. This is the finale and it is a bloody one. Friends, new and old, fall to a magical war and sacrifices are made to save others.

I really felt for this read not only because of what Ryneq and Nykin had to go through, but for what the others had to do to win a war. It is a bloody one that caught me by surprise, even if I knew that war would eventually end in deaths. It is a tense read for the suspense does not let up, even to the very end.

I am sad this is the end, but I am glad that Ryneq, Nykin and the dragons will have the end they all deserve and worked hard for.

4 Heart Review by Dan

In book three, “Alliance”, we are back to the continuing story of Ryneq and Nykin. They return to Torsere to prepare for battle with the evil king next door…who just won’t die already and do everyone a favor. It turns out that King Seran of Rodeth was behind the evil witch that tried to kill our heroes in book two. Even though she is dead, Seran has another witch…this one even more powerful and she will be helping with the attack on Torsere.

What will happen though when the witch brings the dragons, dragon riders, and even a king to their knees with her diabolical plans? Can the elves save them, can the dragons overcome her magic?

I don’t want to do any further spoilers than are already contained in the blurb. Suffice it to say that it is an enjoyable fantasy romp, with battles, bloodshed, an evil king, and an even more evil witch. The characters are all very well portrayed and I found myself despising that witch and king right along with our heroes!

I enjoyed the conclusion of this trilogy. I recommend this book, but again recommend you read all three in order, because they just won’t make sense without the background details! And they are all good, so why not?

5 Stars!

This series just keeps getting better and better! You absolutely have to start with Capture and follow up with Union and prepare yourselves to be blown away with Alliance, the thrilling conclusion of this fantastic series.

The battle to save Torsere and the dragons is about to start and tempers are running high, which creates some friction between our heroes, Ryneq and Nykin. Unfortunately, King Seran seems to have the upper hand with the aid of another witch, one even more powerful than the last, and even with the elves' help, things seem dire for Torsere.

Wow, just wow! This was a brilliant way to wrap the series up. The battle was well-thought-out and executed, and the result was satisfying and that's all I'm saying about it, because this is a book (and series) you definitely need to experience for yourself.

Ryneq and Nykin were realistic and flawed, and as such made mistakes, but they were both willing to work things out, strengthening the bond that joined them from the start.

The secondary characters, mostly the elves and Selene and Ryneq's firsts in command, really came into their own in the last two installments.

Overall, this is a fabulous series. Well-written and with a great world-building and an amazing cast of characters, it had everything, action, romance, camaraderie and a story I know I won't forget anytime soon. Super recommendable!

‘Alliance’ is the conclusion to the ‘Torsere’ series. Out of all the books, this one is the one where you will be on the edge of your seat throughout the whole read. It is high intensity and will leave you speechless and heartbroken several different times. In the end this book is about the battle that has been building up through the previous volumes. Lives will be lost and damage will be done, but in the end, will Torsere still be standing?

At the end of book two, Ryneq and Nykin knew that flying back to Torsere was the right decision because a very powerful witch has teamed up with their enemy and they plan to overtake the kingdom.

Ryneq and Nykin have not been together very long, but their bond is growing stronger each day. Along with their bond, the one between Nykin and his dragon, Fimor, is growing stronger each day as well. With imminent danger right around the corner, Ryneq and all of his army try to come up with the best solution to protect their kingdom. With each plan, it seems that the enemy is one step ahead. Not to mention the fact there is another traitor in their midst and this one is even closer to Ryneq that the last.

Everything is truly starting to look as if there is no possible way that they can defeat the enemy when they breach. Even with the Elves’ help, time is not on their side. When it comes to light that the witch is specifically after the dragons and riders, a plan is hatched that if the worst is to happen then the dragons and riders will leave for the Elven kingdom until they come up with a way to be able to come back and defeat the enemy.

This plan does not go over well with Nykin because he is afraid what will happen if Ryneq is captured. What will happen to the king and their kingdom if they cannot come up with a plan to take back their kingdom in time? What will happen once the new plan is set in motion if the worst was to happen? Can Nykin live with the consequences of what he may have to do in order to defeat the witch?

This book was such an incredible read! I had so many different emotions going through me as I read this book. I am sad that this was the last volume in this series but man, what a way to end it. It definitely went out with a bang! Incredible read and incredible series! Very highly recommended!

** I WAS GIVEN THIS BOOK, BY THE AUTHOR, IN RETURN FOR AN HONEST REVIEW **
Reviewed for Divine Magazine

This one didn't sit well with me. There was quite a lot wrong with it that didn't have to be. Saying that, however, there was enough of the original characters, plot and feeling of the two previous books to keep me happy. I just think it could have been better.

For me, book 3 is nothing more than the second half of book 2. The two should have been one book, with one complete storyline, the way that book 1 was. However, that's not the case. Book 3 acts more like the missing parts of book 2; the action, adventure and danger that was missing from the previous book. It's all been crammed into this one – much shorter – story, so much so that it doesn't really work out the way that book 1 did. There's no balance.

Irritatingly, the characters also seemed to have developed supreme short-sightedness, as well as a case of terminal stupidity. Things that are mentioned, quite cleary, as being important are conveniently “forgotten” or never mentioned again, until it fits neatly into the plot. I can't tell if we're expected to not notice the importance of them, which is kind of stupid, or if we're supposed to believe that Ryneq is really that stupid, busy or ignorant of their importance.

I can get over Ryneq being stupid enough not to see the second spy – even though I knew they were a spy in book 2 – since it was never glaringly obvious until near the end. But, I absolutely refuse to accept that he's ignorant enough to forget something important – that he demanded an answer to, during an interrogation – when it was staring him right in his face and had been vocalised. Yet, he never once brought it up or thought about it again until it had already happened. Ryneq has NEVER been so shortsighted, ignorant or irresponsible before, in any of the books and it irritated me to see it happen here.

There was a big change in a lot of the characters, which was really unsettling. Ryneq was ridiculously stupid, when he'd never been before, Nykin was a little more pathetic and prone to overreacting, which had never happened before and it all left me really unsettled. By the time I was halfway through this story, I didn't care how much action was in it, I just wanted it to be over soon. It felt so much like it was being dragged out, in a way that was unbelievable and unnatural, when the first two books had been so evenly plotted. It felt too much like the author realised they didn't have a lot of space left in the first half, so tried to cram too much into it, then realised they actually had more space than they thought by the second half, so they dragged it out a little longer.

Maybe my big problem is that books 1 and 2 in the trilogy build up my expectations too high. Whatever the reason, this one lacked so much that it didn't have to. If it had been combined with book 2 – with the action replacing some of the more lovey-dovey stuff that was over done in the previous story – then it could have been an epic ending to a two-part series. However, because it was three books, there was a lot of faffing about and cramming in whatever could fit into a short space. There was also a lot of repetition – both with Ryneq's captivity, the arguments and misunderstandings between him and Nykin, as well as the day to day activities.

~

Overall, book 3 should have been the big bang of the series, the masterful closing of a trilogy. Instead, it tried too hard to answer all those unanswered questions, to tell us a million and one things, and to make sure everything was tied off in a nice little bow.

~

Favourite Quote

“He ran his hands over the hot skin of Nykin's chest, watching the way Nykin trembled under his touch and ignoring the desperation threatening to surface. Despite all his wishes to the contrary, Ryneq couldn't shake the feeling that this was good-bye.”

This last book was a doozy. I was biting my lips, my nails, and whatever, so nervous at what was going to happen in this. There were so many directions this could have gone and I was really surprised at how it ended.
Ryneq and Nykin couldn’t even really enjoy their joining. As soon as it was over, they were whisked away to Cerylea’s wedding. And there is where things go wrong. A dark witch is there along with the missing king, trying to crack the protection and start things. But what no one expected, was the witch was just a distraction. There was another with Seran and they were about to take over Torsere. They worked many plans, some flying home quickly on the dragons, but it seemed no matter what happened, they were going to be ready. Especially when they find out how the witch is staying so strong. And Ryneq has to make a decision he never thought he’d have to. Some are going to have to retreat. But even with that, the witch has made threats about them coming back or things will get much worse. And after what Ryneq just saw, it’s already at its worst. And Ryneq hopes there’s a plan that’s coming, because if not, they’re all going down.
This was a hard, hard one to read. You never quite knew what was going to help, even with the elves. There’s another traitor in the mix, witches popping up, using magic they shouldn’t have been. It’s just one bad thing after another. And for Nykin, all he wants is to protect Ryneq, but Ryneq has other ideas and it’s leaving them fighting and tense. I was actually scared for a minute things might be pretty much over, but then we can’t have that for an HEA ;) . The point is, it’s been horrid in ways you could never imagine for Torsere. And all are doing their best to be the best at their duties. To save the King, to save their home. But sometimes it’s too overwhelming and surrender or retreat may have to be the option. But no one wants that. And I felt my heart break at what some of these were feeling. How hurt, or angry. How painful this was. It wasn’t all sunshine and roses. Sacrifices were made, as in any war, and it’s leaving things for the rest as a loss of hope for everyone else.
It’s such a great book. And a great series. I really recommend it. You might need tissues at some points. It’s a very emotional story. I’m glad in the end of what happened, but it was one heck of a journey to get where they had to be.

1.5 stars = An unsatisfactory romance.

The writing and story were decent if you enjoy M/M dark fantasy with minimal romance. I’d estimate the series is 90% fantasy and 10% romance at best, with no steamy sex scenes at all. The focus is primarily on the drawn-out war between Ryneq, King of Torsere, and Seran, King of Rodeth, with the story becoming progressively darker.

By the 30% mark, I was ready for it to end and skimmed to the conclusion. The addition of a witch working with Seran, who gruesomely kills several characters, along with the heavy body count, made it a poor fit for my romance preferences. A major letdown, especially since I really enjoyed the first book! 😢

This book is the culmination of the first two, gone is the slow pace this book brings war and there is a chance that bot the king and nykin could loose all they dream of but together along with the elve the must not only protect the kingdom but protect the dragons as well this is a fast paced hold on to your seats ending to a wonderful trilogy and trust me by the end you will be wishing there would be another book because it pains you for thw story to end. Major HEA apear all across the board but with that comes a price not everyone makes it out alive. You definitely dont want to miss this trilogy

This is a series of 3 books and to get the entire story, they must be read in order. Each book starts immediately as the prior one ends with no overlap. I really liked the series but I read them all back to back. Had I not, I would have hated it because there was no final resolution until the last book. Same review for all because its one story.

Fluid writing, great characters.
