The Call of the Sea #14

Saturn Ascendant

Rate this book
Post Captain Sir Nicholas Turnhouse, Bloody Nick, is loose in the Mediterranean in his razee, Saturn. He is now well towards the top of the Captain’s List and all his actions are taken with one eye on the promotions to Rear Admiral due within a few months.

Wellington is active in Spain and Britain is celebrating its first military successes in Europe. The Navy is tasked with supporting the Army by closing the Western Mediterranean to French shipping, forcing all stores to be sent overland, at risk to the swarming guerrilleros in their incessant war with each other and the French.

Spain is suffering invasion which has unleashed long simmering discontents and a multi-sided civil war. The Spanish peasantry are experiencing little short of genocide.

Nick must protect British interests and, when possible, take pity on the Spanish people. He rapidly comes to the conclusion that little has changed. The best aid he can give to the Spanish is to destroy the French wherever he can find them.

N. Turnhouse with a job-lot of orders

Still fighting the French, yet careful not to completely rescue the Spanish allies, let them fight their own battles in their own way, while helping those Nick can.
I always enjoy the concern & responsibility Nick shows for the youngest upon his ship, in mourning the loss of those he respected, valued. Many a new man learns what a good leader-teacher their captain makes, takes in what is said, & equally what is not said.

This has been a wonderful series and a fun read. However the last couple of books included this one are simply repetitive and frankly boring as the story seems to move to different locations with the same results. New characters come and go but don’t generate much interest and there is nothing beyond the usual seafaring jargon and occasional mayhem. Perhaps it’s time to bring this story to a close.

Excellent book!

Another easy read as “Bloody Nick” continues his career in the Royal Navy during the early years of the 19th century against Napoleon. The war of 1812 with American is on the near horizon and Nick is at the top of the Captain’s List hoping for appointment as a Rear Admiral of the Blue Squadron. Time will tell what the future holds.

Excellent, Mr. Wareham!!!

A great continuation of the tale of Nickolas Turnhouse. Lots of characters come and go, many due to the admirals promotions and Sir Nicks' constant tutelage. Hopefully the next book will see ' Blue at the Mizzen ' for our hero!
My usual thanks to Mr. Wareham for all his work on this series!

consistent

Another excellent read of the adventures of Bloody Nick. I hope he is made and given a squadron to command. I enjoyed the making of Robbins a Commander and given a sloop as he surely deserves it after all his earlier problems. One thing I would like to see is Nick meeting his first son with Arabella. Waiting on the next episode.

another great Bloody Nick tale.

I so enjoy Andrew Wareham, and the Bloody Nick series.
Much maneuvering in the Mediterranean, as the Peninsula campaign begins. Some very exciting actions ashore and afloat.

Not What We Expect

Very disappointed in this latest episode, could have been written by an auto-writing program. Probably was. I feel like I’ve just wasted a part of my life reading this very poor example of the Andrew Wareham book-mill. We expect better!

A Worthy Addition to the Series

I’m a fan of Andrew Wareham! His novels of the sea are all excellent, and in Bloody Nick Turnhouse he has created a likeable character.
Highly recommended.

This series continues to please.

A lively set of main characters, changing frequently, and a consistently entertaining story line demonstrate Wareham’s strengths as a valid and productive Age of Sail author.

Another delight!

A wonderful surprise to see that another episode in the Bloody Nick series was out. The cast of characters grows but the “usual suspects “ are to hand.

heck of a place to leave us in!

Tiny bit miffed for the ending IS a cliffhanger - but well worth the read to get there.
I NEED the next book NOW! Please?just can’t wait!

Action At Sea Again
In another great addition to this entertaining series, Nick Turnhouse is firmly in control, and this story highlights that more than ever. Major characters come and go, showcasing young men who are drawn into a life of duty and sacrifice. Throughout it all, Nick Turnhouse exemplifies devoted service to the British Navy for his crew.

As we reach the later stages of the series, there is a growing sense that events are building towards a conclusion, with developments both at sea and at home driving the momentum of the story forward. The author's narrative arc has run its course, and the young man who set out to sea at the beginning is now a decorated naval officer on the path to a brilliant career.

As devoted readers of this series, we have shared this journey.
