Although many of us dream of verdant pastures and orchards dripping with fruit when we consider going back to the land, there's one thorny issue that will send most homesteaders-to-be scurrying back to the city within the first decade --- money. Yep, even though we'd rather focus on lambs and tomatoes, the most relevant green object for many new homesteaders is dollar bills.

The trouble is that homesteads require a lot of maintenance time and are often located in economically depressed parts of the country, so finding a nearby job that can fit between the cracks is tricky. In my experience, the homesteaders who go the distance are the ones who turn into entrepreneurs, making money from their farms or homes so they can escape the rat race (and find time for what really matters).

But what kind of business should you start? This is the question Tim Young answers in his new book. He mentions hundreds of money-making suggestions based on bringing in income from your land itself (for example, with farm stays or hunting leases), using your skills to make a buck (perhaps by being a mechanic or online copy-editor), or producing a product (such as cheese or chicken pluckers).

Young combines his own learnings with the experiences of eighteen other homesteading families to produce a well-rounded account of your options as an entrepreneurial homesteader. When you pull it all together, the author has created a must-read for anyone dreaming of homesteading, or wanting to make their homestead more financially secure. Because you don't want to be one of those homesteaders who throws in the towel and ends up back in an apartment in the city, do you?

This is a great book for inspiration & ideas for anyone dreaming about a homesteading lifestyle. It gives a lot of general overviews on different homestead business ideas & basic interviews with people who are living that dream.

However, this is not an in-depth business book. It will open you up to ideas & possibilities, but you will have to do further research to figure out which options will work best for you & your location. Each option/idea presented, indeed, opens up the world of specialties & many, many in-depth books are available on each topic & often each geographical region.

But if you’re still at the starting stage & not sure which direction to go, this will be a great book for you.

If you are considering homesteading, farming, or just living off the grid, the first chapter or two are a great pat on the back. They really pumped me up. The rest is just a series laundry lists of money-making ideas, interspersed with short interviews. My gripe is that there was NO DATA. I already know that honey can make "good money," that raising beef "takes time," and that people "buy a lot of soap." Where are the numbers, Tim??? What is the actual market price of honey? How many seasons does it take to fatten up a steer, what is the cost/lb of silage or grass, and how much can organic beef be sold for? What is the market share of homemade soap, and what are the actual revenues? The "real life cases" are just quick interviews with questions like "what do you miss about city life?" not useful breakdowns of their business models. Unless you need tips like "you can make money teaching foraging classes" or "save money by cancelling your cable subscription," don't waste your time on this book.

Great for me to listen to while I'm forging out an existence here in the country. Gave me some new perspective and insights into how people make money on their homesteads. Even if I might not be as "rustic" as some of the interviewees.

Because I am such a newbie to this topic, I hesitate to give it a star rating, but it definitely provided some wonderful ideas and inspiration. The stories/profiles throughout made the goal of homesteading for profit feel achievable.
