Wendy Knuth thought that zombies were getting a bad rap. What's more likely, a human apocalypse or a zombie apocalypse? Well, now there is a kinder, gentler zombie family. These zombies don't like blood, but they love tomato juice! Thanks to Wendy, now you can see things from the zombie's perspective.

After playing video games with her children, Wendy Knuth was inspired to write books about zombies for kids. She hopes that humans of every age will enjoy reading these books as much as she loves writing them. Wendy is happily married to an old, bald guy, and they live in Arizona, where they continue to raise their two zoners.

A wonderful children's book that could be enjoyed by young readers, or one read by adults for the child equally. Exciting, bright artwork and a mystery to solve keep the interest peaked, with a fun alternative world ruled by Zombies to stimulate the imagination.

I found something off about this book that I can’t put my finger on. In some ways, it is almost too text heavy and that does the glorious illustrations a disservice. In other ways, the the roles are so stereotypical that it undermines the use of a zombie family, especially one where all the children are still pretty.

My son (8) and I (the Mom) reviewed this book for Mother Daughter (and Son) Book Reviews. Here are excerpts from our reviews. For full reviews, please visit Mother Daughter Book Reviews.

SON SAYS:

I think the whole book was really funny and I like the last page where Kamper is imagining a toy hippopotamus. I really liked the pictures and the cover because they are funny. I liked the picture when Kamper jumps out of the tent and the pictures of Wolfbag. I also like the ones of Gargoy saying “Oh no!” and “Help!” because he gets squeezed a lot and the one of Monster. I found the picture of the Mom weird and the Dad one kind of surprised me when he took off his mask. I didn’t think the pictures were scary – they were funny.

Overall, I really liked the book and I thought it was funny. I would read lots more books about these zombies. I think kids under 5 might be scared of the pictures but everybody else would love this book.

MOM SAYS:

Moore Zombies: The Search for Gargoy is a clever and humorous picture book focusing on a family of zombies working together to solve the mystery of the missing “Gargoy”. The book features a lovely collection of characters, a fun mystery to solve, and fantastic detailed illustrations that children will absolutely love to examine closely. I recommend this book to children who love books featuring zombies but not for children who may be frightened by these types of images. This book may not be for everyone, but we really enjoyed it! Ages 5 to 10.

A children's book doesn't have to be about cuddly teddy bears or happy-go-lucky toys to be wonderful and sweet. I have three kids ranging in age from three to thirteen years old. I have a slightly twisted sense of humor which has been passed down to my kids, either by genetics or parenting I do not know. I fell in love with this book and made sure my brood delighted in the story much the same. I may have been a bit overzealous in my presentation to each of them, especially the thirteen year old, but I found them all asking to see it again, days later, even the problematic teenager who is usually more excited over video games and which girl in History class commented on his Instagram than anything I could possibly throw at him. THAT alone warrants a five star rating.

I'm not done yet. The illustrations are stellar. Kudos to Brian Allen for capturing every grotesque detail down to the Never-tagged raven atop the Moore family mailbox. Each page presented new disgustingly cute details that could be pondered over time and time again. This may be the only book in existence that could feature a toddler with an exposed brain that elicits a, "ahh cute!" from my three year old daughter. Again, let me make this abundantly clear, I have a twisted sense of humor that has been handed down to my children.

Not only is 'The Search for Gargoy' wrapped with fascinating and beautiful illustrations, the story within is as much a gift as the visual. We follow Baby Zom as she searches for her lost toy, Gargoy. Along the way she is assisted by the entire Moore clan from her older brother, Kamper, to her sugar sweet sister, Gothina and the family genius, Broheimer. We can't forget Mombie Moore and Pop, the matriarch and patriarch of this lovable clan. The attention to detail is astounding. No matter how many times I read the book to my daughter, aptly born on Halloween herself, I find something new before I reach the last page. I don't want to give away anything because the discovery is half the fun. Wendy Knuth has created a heartfelt tale that's both sweet and cute... about zombies... for kids and adults of all ages... about zombies.

When I was in junior high, my English teacher gave me a children's book titled, "Slugs" by David Greenberg. I didn't think it possible for another book to come along and replace this as my most beloved children's story. I was so wrong. I will be giving copies of 'The Search for Gargoy' as gifts for years to come.

If you love Halloween, buy this book. If you love zombies, buy this book. If you have kids, buy this book. If you have a dark sense of humor, buy this book. If you are still reading this, what are you waiting for? Buy this book!

Baby Zom isn’t happy.

Baby Zom doesn’t want to go camping.

Baby Zom doesn’t want to play Hungry, Hungry Humans

Baby Zom wants Gargoy.

But Gargoy is lost.

Moore Zombies is a delightful picture book. Each page has a wonderful illustration depicting the scene as it’s told.

I would love to have seen the pictures in color, but they’re in black and white in the eBook. They are still fun to look at and there’s so much to see in each one.

Baby Zom is adorable, even if she is a zombie. And she looks to her older siblings to help find Gargoy.

Her brother Kamper is like a typical boy. He’s always on the go and his room is a mess.

Next oldest is her sister Gothina. She likes pretty clothes and accessorizes with her creepy crawlies.

And the oldest of the bunch, Broheimer loves to read. He’s the nerd of the family.

Together they set out to find Gorgoy.

This would be a great story to read aloud with young children. But I think older kids and grown ups would have just as much fun following the dirt trail to the end of the mytsery.

Did you know zombies love tomatoes?

I won't lie - I totally bought this book for the cover. (Brian Allen - great job, dude!!) The book as a whole, though, is definitely worth it. I loved it. Fun story and great characters. It reminded me of old Scooby Doo shows with the kids investigating the mystery of Gargoy's disappearance. My favorite part is when you meet the father - read the book and you'll find out what I'm talking about.

This is probably the kids' favorite Halloween book so far. I have read it over and over again for the last couple of days. They laugh even harder each time. And I'm glad they like it because it gives me another chance to read it again :)

Baby Zom is upset and goes to his older brothers room. Kamper Moore likes messing with and jumping out at people. Baby Zom tells his brother, "No Gargoy." Maybe big sister has seen him. Gothina Moore has many creepy crawly friends who she raises and cares for. She also wears them. They all three follow a trail to Broheimer's Room. In the human world he would be called a geek or a nerd. They all decided to help Zom find Gargoy. They worked together to solve this problem. Children and adults alike will enjoy this new family of irregular people who come together to help their brother find his Gargoy.

I got this as a free book.

I like children's books sometimes. (I'm not afraid to admit that, as an adult, I sometimes enjoy something simple like a children's book.) I'm also currently getting into the autumn mood, which means reading books that are all things Halloween and autumn related.

All in all, this was a cute little book for children who like zombies. It's part of a little series and, I admit, I may very well read the others just as light, quick little reads.

Zombie adorableness

Really enjoyed reading this to my dogs as a bedtime story. Baby Zom is adorable. In fact, all the characters are likeable. I will keep an eye out for new books by this author.

Meet the Moore family and their particular hobbies as they search through the house to find Gargoy, the toy that Baby Zom needs to sleep. Her comfort blankey if you will. A wonderfully illustrated book that doesn't hide from the rotten appearances of the zombies. Not good for the very young.

This is a wonderful story that enables the younger children to participate in the zombie movement. The characters are definitely zombie, but not that scarey. They also have good morals and each child is well developed. I like that each child is his or her own personality with special interests. Yet, all the children support each other and gather together to solve the mystery. Toward the end the father is a bit of a surprise, but his mask is charming in a zombie way. That the children are of different ages and have different pursuits is great. This book will appeal to a wide variety of children. The fashion ideas and the science project are typical of non-zombie children. So are the love of camping and the baby wanting a cuddly gargoy. I also like that Mombie has special food that her children like. What mom doesn't bake/cook/purchase something special for her children? The Illustrations are absolutely priceless. Not just a snapshot of this child or that project, but full page, color pictures with great detail are extremely artistic. The front of the house includes the door knocker, the doggie (or whatever) door, the mail box, the welcome mat, a black raven, and an eerie looking house. It is fascinating and rather creepy at the same time. The story is written in a way that both children and adults will enjoy it, kind of like the adult humor that Disney scattered throughout his children's movies. All in all, the story is well written and the illustrations are grand. I would recommend this book to anyone. I keep a copy for visiting children. It gives them something fun to do while the adults are chatting.

This is a charming book which I bought for the children who visit me. When it arrived I sat down and read it twice. Yes, it was that fun and the illustrations are wonderful. There is something new to see every time you read the book. My visiting children, who are 3, 6 and 8 years old always ask for the book whenever they visit. I like that the story moves right along and your curiosity about who or what Gargoy is increases with every page. Can't wait for the end, but really don't want the book to end. I really like that even though they are Zombies, the brothers and sisters in this book help each other. It is great when a book not only is fun to read but also teaches good values. A good author. I hope she writes Moore stories about this zombie family. And Moore pictures please.

I was so happy to open a package in my mailbox and find this book! I read it right away to my daughter. She loves zombies (she's 2!), and when I entered to win this book on GoodReads I had my fingers crossed!
This was one of the longest books I've read to her, but she was completely engrossed in the stories and the illustrations. The pictures are a-mazing!!! The story is pretty awesome too! Baby Zom lost her toy Gargoy, so her entire zombie family gets involved to try to find it. It was a cute message about a zombie family working together to help out their youngest member.
All in all this book was great. My daughter loved every aspect of it, and I did as well. I can see myself reading this to her regularly for a long time. I highly recommend this to families with kids who love zombies and great stories. It is definitely a great book for children and parents.

Moore Zombies: The Search for Gargoy was given to me for an honest opinion and review of the book. Though I am not a huge fan of fantasy or horror, the illustrations in this book will knock your socks off. INCREDIBLE! is the word that comes to mind first. The theme is the standard 'lost and found' or 'who done it' as the Zombie siblings pull together to find Gargoy. Just what is a Gargoy we do not know until the very end. From sibling to sibling, room to room the kids gather to follow the clues until the mystery is at last resolved. What makes this story fresh is the illustrations; from beginning to end they captivated me and I think it will hold the attention of every youngster who reads it or instead can't take their eyes off the incredible pictures.

I read it to kids who aren't afraid of zombies and monsters. I am kind of conservative about scaring them because I'm too over bearing with their sensitivity but still think this is great for children of all ages. I think the nice pictures would help ease it and make it look more fun and cute. I find this book to be pretty interactive to try and get the kids to think of all the possibilities and solve mysteries. I hope the author would write more of these as a series because I thought it was great to look at each character and learn about them.

The Moore Zombie Family solves another adventure and mystery!

It was quite an extraordinary and yet quite spooky zombie story
yet great story teaching kids and especially family siblings that if they would work as a team any thing can be solved. For this reason I think grade school kids who are into such things as this will really enjoy it and this is why I am giving this ebook five stars and well as the great illustrations involved. I received this free and in return here is my honest review. Great work Wendy! By Angela

I enjoyed reading this book. It breaks a lot of the stereotypes held about zombies. They are usually clean and love tomato juice. I had no idea!
This is a cute book about a little girl who loses her Gargoy and her search to find him. She solicits the help from her brothers and sister and her parents. She finally finds Gargoy in a surprising place!
This is a five star book!

I read this book to me kids, they both sat still and listened (always a good sign) all the way through, they said it was 'good'my son liked the 'boy bits', my daughter the older girl - something for everyone. Asked to score it out of 5, they got a bit confused, but after a while we settled on a 3.5 and a 4.5 - hence the 4. I have to say - I liked it as well!

My daughter enjoyed us reading this together. I love how it's a positive zombie story, so it helps underline the point that not all zombies are bad. She was a teeny bit scared, but not to the point that she wanted me to stop reading. It's not too long so we were able to finish it in one sitting without me hurting my throat from too much reading aloud.

Got this as a freebie on my Kindle. It is quite short (I read it while having a cuppa) but it's a fun little story and the illustrations are lovely and very colourful. I haven't come across many books for kids about zombies, it's usually witches and ghosts. Recommended.

OK I will be the first one to say that the world is a bit zombie obsessed. With that said this book is very cute. I think it is the basic story that is cute, but the zombie aspects are entertaining. I also love the artwork.
