A girl combating a sleep enchantment, a young man trying to save his brother, and a deception that forces them together.
Daphne is well known for her endless naps and for the enchantment that fuels them—after all she comes from Oakden, and Oakden’s Legacy is famous for two sleeping and thorns. She’s ready to finally be free of the sleepiness, even if that means returning to the birth kingdom she left long ago. But when she steps over the border, the Legacy’s enchantment doesn’t lift. Apparently she’s going to have to fight harder to escape its clutches—something that would be easier if the very handsome Finley didn’t keep getting in her way.
Finley has spent his life protecting his younger brother—but when the foolhardy youth falls prey to the Legacy, the boy is going to need more than just Fin to escape. Thankfully a new arrival to the kingdom gives Fin hope, even if he has to use a tiny deception to secure her assistance.
But the deception has consequences neither expected, and both their plans are soon in tatters. When they’re forced to work together, how can Daphne trust someone who lied to her and how can Fin save both his brother and the beautiful girl who’s slowly stealing his heart?
Enter a world where tales of the past shape the enchanted landscape—where glass can bend like a slipper and picking a rose courts danger. A world where the inhabitants must overcome the fabled Legacies as they find romance, adventure, and friendship.
Note, this series is comprised of interconnected stand-alones. However, for greatest enjoyment, it is recommended to read them in order
Melanie Cellier grew up on a staple diet of books, books and more books. And although she got older, she never stopped loving children’s and young adult novels. She always wanted to write one herself, but it took three careers and three different continents before she actually managed it.
She now feels incredibly fortunate to spend her time writing from her home in Adelaide, Australia where she keeps an eye out for koalas in her backyard. Her staple diet hasn’t changed much, although she’s added choc mint Rooibos tea and Chicken Crimpies to the list.
She writes young adult fantasy including her Spoken Mage series, and her Four Kingdoms and Beyond the Four Kingdoms series which are made up of linked stand-alone stories that retell classic fairy tales.
Even since meeting Daphne in the first book, “Legacy of Roses”, I’ve been eagerly waiting her story—hence why I devoured this book in less than four hours. In my defense, this third book was much shorter than the prior books at only 270-ish pages. I admit to being shocked and disappointed to that detail when I saw it! However, I think the length worked out well enough for the plot and I don’t feel like anything was too rushed or dragged at all.
After dealing with Rosalie’s triplet younger brothers for years in book one, Daphne has another little-brother figure to handle in this book with Finley’s younger brother who is almost as much as a handful as the triplets!
Daphne is a fun character because while some might call her lazy for constantly napping, it’s due to the Legacy and she actually has a lot of wit and logical behind her actions. Like I've said in my reviews of the prior books in this series: this is SUCH a creative series and I love the setting of this world and all the details. Once again, the word "magic" is never used so I feel like you could call this series non-magical but still have "fantasy" elements that couldn't happen in our boring real world.
I will say that I didn’t quite connect with Finley and how quick the two of them fell for each other. Though I think that was because of all the weeks going by that we the reader don’t see, but the characters experienced. Either way, I really like Daphne and if she’s happy and likes him, I do too, I suppose.
Unfortunately, I did find some errors in this book that I haven’t seen before in one by this author such as head jumping (in this case it was when the POV of a main character switches in a chapter that didn’t start with their name—such as at the beginning shortly after Finley and Daphne meet and there are things added (not conversations) that only she would know, but it was his POV chapter and thus is shouldn’t have been mentioned at all?) and also a time where it randomly had a 1st person sentence in the midst of the rest of the book being completely in 3rd person. I know these things happen and it’s not a big deal, but it was still kind of disappointing.
I was thrilled to see Avery and Elliot (from the connecting book in this series) again and then Rosalie and Dimitri at the end. I love see best friends in books and Daphne and Rosalie are two of my favorites.
I’m very sad that now I have to wait over a year until the next book of the series releases and honestly not sure how I’ll make it. If you need me, I’ll be huddled in the corner, keeping track of the days by drawing lines on the wall.
(Side note: if Archie--actual name Archer--doesn't get his own Robin Hood inspired bonus tale, I'm staging a rebellion 😂)
Main Content- In this series, each of the kingdoms have the origin story of a fairytale and in this book it is Sleeping Beauty; Each of the kingdoms have the remains of the enchantments of the original tale in the land (called ‘the Legacy’) and the Legacy is always trying to recreate the original events; While the Legacy is not a sentient force that can punish people, it can manipulate and influence others to do something to match the history of the land (such as tempting someone to pick a rose or accidentally touch a spindle); Some of the countries have capitalized on their unique features like the Cinderella kingdom having amazing glass work and the Sleep Beauty kingdom have well-known sleeping draughts and enchanted spindles used to put someone to sleep.
The Legacy doesn’t like it when people stray from their birth countries and there are burdens placed on those who do, though, they are different for each person (such as Daphne who falls asleep often, but her parents felt a pain while away from their birth country that continued to get worse); We see Daphne fall asleep multiple times and her concern about it (described as a “pull” on her and then she sleeps); Daphne and Finley have a conversation about her parents, if what they did was selfish, and her emotions about it all (she tries hard to not be resentful towards them as she can’t change what is done, but Finley encourages her to feel her emotions and not push them down); Daphne is traveling back to her birth country in hopes of meeting her “true self”—the Daphne that doesn’t have the burden of the Legacy.
In Oakden (Sleeping Beauty kingdom), babies are blessed by godparents to “speak a blessing over the baby” which are chosen from the list given to Oakden’s famous sleeping princess (no one risks having actual christenings for fear of the Legacy) and while some believe it only makes the parents feel good, others believe it has some effect on the child due to the strength of the power of the Legacy in that area at the time of the blessing.
Some characters are able to make a brambly path clear by touching it due to the influence of the Legacy’s power on them (not described as magic); Those under the Sleeping Beauty enchantment can sleep for decades if someone else doesn’t break it (the person and anyone with them when the enchantment happens do not age while asleep).
No language stronger than ‘blast’; A few mentions of curses (said, but not written or cut-off); Eye rolling & Sarcasm.
Fights/Fighting, Injuries, Pain, & Passing out (up to a few sentences); Seeing someone tied-up, nicked with a sleeping draught knife (knocking the person unconscious), & held at knife-point.
Finley picks locks, breaks-into a place, and lies to Daphne at the beginning of the book; He feels guilty about lying, but deems it necessary due to needing help for his brother that only she can provide; Finley and his brother, Archie, also steal items from others but Finley tries to always return it (thus being more of a borrow than a steal) and Archie thinks of himself like Robin Hood and steals from the rich for a good cause; Finley thinks that he might have to threaten Daphne to help him (with a sleeping potion-laced knife); Finley has to twist the ear of a horse to cause a scene (which he apologizes to the horse for & the horse is okay).
When Finley talks about his father, there is hatred because of what he did to their family (including abandoning them and Fin says his father ruined his life).
Mentions of the deaths (of parents, including one in childbirth) & a father abandoning his family; Mentions of the possibility of someone killing another or “running them through” (also a villain ordering for someone to be “dispose[d] of”); Mentions of stealing, thieves, & break-ins; Mentions of abductions & nightmares of it happening; Mentions of injuries & pain; Mentions of gossip & rumors; Mentions of hunting and preparing the meat; A couple mentions of possible murder; A mention of a possible assassin; A mention of a fire; A mention of a drunk who drowned; A mention of another man possibly being drunk; A mention of a plan to have a man drinking a few drinks to gain information out of him.
1 almost kiss (up to a few sentences), 2 kisses lasting a sentence, 2 kisses lasting a couple sentences, 1 kiss lasting a few sentences, Remembering a kiss & Staring at lips (up to a couple sentences).
Touches, Dancing, Embraces, Hand holding, Warmth, Flutters/Shivers, & Nearness (up to a few sentences); Some jealousy & winks; Noticing (up to a few sentences but mainly that the other is beautiful/handsome); Daphne and Finley are quickly attracted to each other, but she tries to not focus on it.
Because of the sleeping beauty influences, to wake someone who touched a spindle, they have to be kissed, but it can be on the hand or foot, not just the lips; This brings up a few parts with the possibility of an old man kissing a young girl (to gain her property) or even an older girl kissing a young boy (who she views maternally and kisses him on his forehead); Those who wake the beauty, however, are susceptible to the Legacy’s influence and the beauty will think they are in love with the one who woke them (often lasting for weeks).
Mentions of a kiss; A few mentions of rogues & flirts; A mention of Daphne noticing men looking at her friends the way Finley looks at her and she finds it intoxicating; A mention of a man saying that sometimes love isn’t enough for couples (in the context it implies that wealth or the lack of it is important); A mention of a married couple kissing.
This was an interesting twist on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale! The world building was vivid, with aspects of the original fairy tale brought through in a very engaging way. The characters were entertaining and unique, and their interactions were realistic and enjoyable. It definitely lived up to the standard built by the previous books in the series!
3.5 Too forever to get into and I was a bit disappointed in Daphne, she was very different from the other books in the series. But other than that it was okay. Wasn’t too much of a fan of the dude, but he was better by the end. All in all, okay.
Content Rating: 5/5 Content Notes: I can't remember many details of things, but I know there was some kissing and fighting. Pretty clean, though. Theme Rating: 5/5 Age Rating: 13+
Initial review: I need more. Need more, I repeat! How am I to wait so long for the next book?😭😭🤣🤣 just kidding… I think I’ll survive😜😉
This book started off a little bit slower, but it was amazing once I got into it! It was so good to read Daphne's story, and it was excellent overall- the plot twists were almost predictable, but not quite, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Spoiler ahead!- Overall, another great Kingdoms of Legacy novel!!
There’s room for more than one Sleeping Beauty in this tale. I’ve eagerly awaited the release of this book, and it lived up to my high expectations. Daphne caught my interest as a side character, and she shone even brighter as the main character! I loved the nods to Oakden’s Legacy that we learn. The plot has multiple twists and turns that all felt right but weren’t entirely predictable. Fin started on the wrong foot, and I wasn’t sure I would like him, but he and their relationship grew on me. Daphne was too sensible to choose a toxic guy, and thank goodness Fin was much more than meets the eye. I can’t wait to see what Avery’s quest for breaking the Legacy’s hold has in store for us in future books.
Really fantastic retelling of Sleeping Beauty. Clean in language and content, I highly recommend Legacy of Thorns!
First book I've been disappointed in for the whole series! None of the characters stood out to me. There were some humorous scenes, but not enough for me to recommend this to anyone. It has a dual POV, with both POVs being written in third person.
I have been eagerly anticipating Daphne’s story since Legacy of Roses and this book did not disappoint! I loved it! Daphne has been my favorite character in this series. She is a feisty and clever character. Legacy of Thorns was a brilliant take on Sleeping Beauty. The uniqueness of this tale quickly captured my attention. The continual world building in each book is well done and interesting as we learn about each kingdom’s legacies. I loved her dynamic with Finley. It was well written and Daphne definitely met her match! The romance was swoony with only kisses. I also loved Archer and he was hysterical 😂 He quickly became my favorite side character. I hope Archer gets his own story. Such a wonderful book and highly recommend!
This book was really good! I loved getting to read Daphne's story and I loved how she went on her own journey as she was previously a side character to all the other characters from the previous books. I also really enjoyed seeing Avery again and I loved all the humour, storyline, and characters. Archer was so sweet and adorable and it was absolutely hilarious how he became infatuated with Daphne and, later, how he ended up getting a taste of his own medicine! The ML, Finley, was also so incredible! I loved how protective he was of Daphne and how he tried to regain her trust after having lied to her. This book is a perfect sequel to the previous two books in Kingdoms of Legacy and I absolutely cannot wait for the fourth book!
I was so excited for Daphne’s story, but alas it did not have the same pop and clever originality of the previous tales. With the addition of new characters and a new land in the kingdoms of Legacy, I didn’t feel the connection and vividness to draw me in and live through their eyes.
A wonderful Sleeping Beauty spin. Daphne is so clever and I love her story. It seemed just a tad crazy for her to fall in love so quickly, but Fin was a cutie too!
Ahh, I’ve been waiting for this book since the last one! The cover is so pretty! I love the pink! This is a Sleeping Beauty retelling/reimagining! I didn’t love this one as much as the last one, but it was still very good! I really love Daphne as a character and I’m so glad to see her happily ever after! She kept making me sleepy and wanting to take a nap with how many naps she took and how easily she fell asleep! 😂 Finley was interesting. It took me a bit to like him, but once I did, he was great! Daphne and him fit so well together! Archie is SO annoying! He was driving me insane! I look forward to his future romance, I hope! 😁 I’m so glad to be back in this world and reading Melanie Cellier again! I’m so sad the next one doesn’t come out until next year! I really enjoyed this one and highly recommend it! 5 stars!
Quote that I liked:
🌸 Finley sighed. "This is going to hurt, isn't it? Hurt me, I mean." She gave him her sweetest smile. "Maybe." He sighed again. "I guess I deserve it."
Ugghhhh my only regret is the rest of the series isn't published. I need more!! I love Melanie Cellier's books and this is no exception. I was so excited for Daphne to get a story after loving her in the first two books. I was intrigued by her sleeping curse right along with her.
Daphne and Fin were easy to root for. But I also adored the side characters in their found family too. The side characters are so well fleshed out in these books and they make it that much more enjoyable.
I had a lot of fun and I don't know what I'll do with myself while I wait for the next ones to be published. Cry, probably.
But it just missed the mark. I wish Melanie Cellier had heard of hypersomnia or fibromyalgia. Hearing about someone who's constantly fatigued believing it makes her not her true self, it hurts. And someone with a constant ache? That's my whole life. Would have loved to see those conditions treated with more seriousness, but I can't blame her. No one's heard of them. It was still a beautiful book.
I was so excited for Daphne to finally get her time in the spotlight. Some other characters from the series do pop up, and they just add to the magic of the tale. I am curious where the next tale will take us since, other than the overarching one, a lot of the little story threads have been tied up now. Can’t wait! Maybe we will meet some fun, new people!
Filled with plenty of adventure, romance and intrigue. We must not forget to toss in a nap or two. Also. This story flowed very well was very enjoyable and is definitely a fun to read. Some places I will admit were easy to figure out, but overall a great romanticy.
Finally we got Daphane's story. This story didn't disappoint and I loved the quirky elements of this story. I can definately see future heroines and heros in upcoming books. We get to see a glimpse of Avery and Elliot from Ties of Legacy. Definately recomend this author
I’ve loved Daphne in the other books in this series so it was so fun to get to read her story! And it was all I pictured - humorous, fast paced, excellent characters, and a fun take on how fate and choice come together. Wonderful book and can’t wait for more!
I really loved reading this wonderful book! I loved the characters and the plot! I absolutely loved this retelling of Sleeping Beauty I had a hard time putting this really wonderful book down! I am really looking forward to reading the next book in this really wonderful series!
Somehow my husband guessed it. He told me a thing but the story pointed elsewhere. But he was correct. So as not to spoil it, I will say I loved the twists and turns this book took. A fun read.
I find these stories interesting and creative. I did feel like Daphne and Fin loved each other because it was written in the story to be that way. I didn’t really get any connection or chemistry from them.
I feel like this was the best one yet, it also helped/was so cute having the amazing character building of Daphne through previous novels until she got her own and of course the required cameo pivotal to saving the day 🥰
This is my favorite series of Melanie Cellier’s, and I absolutely loved this book! I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series when it releases!
Loved Daphne's story. Super cute, very sweet, and such a great read! I had no idea that more books are planned. But that's exciting, as this series keeps getting better and better!
I have just spent the past month binging every single Cellier book. So forgive me, but I am going to review them all as one.
Is it woke? Not really. There is the tiniest hint of 'women can do ___ too." Everything else is perfect.
Is it good? Cellier's works are phenomenal. Her world building is second to none, and her tone is perfect. She manages to have a light and easy to understand tone but also be entirely enthralling, making it perfect for teens and women alike. Her characterisation is great, and her mysteries captivating. Her only stumble is a penchant for not answering questions that her works pose about the characters or their past, which is still driving me insane. Obviously some of her earlier works are less developed, but the world building and tone is still amazing, and their charm makes them fantastic. I particularly adore her subtle nod to Christianity with the higher powers evident in her works. For audio book fans, Esther Wayne is a fantastic narrator and makes every line even better. Fans of Chanda Hahn, Deborah Grave White, and Lynette Noni will love Cellier.
Is it appropriate for your children? It is. Though some have mild mature themes, it is all off page and written in a way that it will often go over younger reader's heads. Every book is a clean romance, and there is not even a whisper of an unworthy or abusive love interest that happens so often in fantasy romance. Propriety is always adhered to, and real true love wins the day with romance that protects as well as the other types of true love. 11-12+
This series has been very cute and an interesting take on fairy tales and the lore that surrounds them. I've enjoyed every single one of them! And look forward to the next one! This author has become an instant buy for me.
