From the author of Not Quite by the Book comes a deliciously witty novel about second chances, secret identities, and the art of rising above life’s bitter moments.

At forty-six, Sophie Bianco’s life is half baked—trapped in a controlling marriage and estranged from her critical mother. Her only solace? The Invisible Baker, her secret business helping overwhelmed moms create Pinterest-worthy moments.

When her mother’s death coincides with the last straw in her marriage, Sophie grabs her chance. Armed with divorce papers and her savings, she reclaims her childhood home. But freedom comes with hoarder-level chaos, plumbing disasters, and an ex-husband plotting revenge. When her daughter announces an engagement that echoes Sophie’s own mistakes, the past threatens to repeat itself.

Desperate for income, Sophie takes a position as a pastry chef, finding unexpected sweetness in both the work and the charming restaurant owner. But as family drama and professional opportunities collide, Sophie must finally answer the question she’s been Who is she when she’s no longer invisible?

Just Add Happiness caught my attention because I love a story where a woman at any stage of life finally decides her life deserves better than the scraps she’s been handed. Watching Sophie Bianco rebuild herself from the wreckage is the real heart of this novel, and the journey ends up being far sweeter and more grounded than I expected. The story blends humor, tension, vulnerability, and a lot of honest growth, and I can honestly say Sophie’s transformation isn’t neat or pretty. It’s messy, brave, and quietly satisfying in all the ways that matter.

Sophie, Alicia, and Sophie’s daughter, Camilla, are all characters a reader can root for without hesitation. Sophie, as the narrator, is the most fully realized, a mix of virtues and flaws that makes her feel believable. Alicia and Camilla add energy whenever they’re on the page, and my personal favorite was Raisin, the cat, who quietly steals scenes without even trying. The weak link for me was Sophie’s ex-husband. He’s written as the clear villain of the story, and he certainly plays the role, maybe a little too perfectly. I would have preferred more nuance there, but he fills the part he’s given well enough to win an Oscar.

The book starts off at a good pace, but the middle slowed down for me as Sophie circles the same thoughts again and again. It makes sense for someone going through a divorce, swinging between hope, anxiety, anger, and flashes of humor, and I did laugh out loud more than once. I wanted the best for her the whole time and felt some of her frustration right along with her, even when the introspection stretched a bit long. Thankfully, once the story crossed that midway hump, the momentum shifted. About two-thirds in, it hit a stride that kept me fully engaged, and I genuinely didn’t want to put it down after that.

Fans of chick lit will enjoy Just Add Happiness, and I’d especially point it toward readers of Sophie Kinsella and Sophie Ranald. So many Sophies! This is a warm-hearted, gentle read that left me feeling optimistic, and I think it’ll do the same for anyone who needs a lift. If you’re craving a pick-me-up or a breather between heavier books, this one is well worth reaching for.

I read a digital copy made available by Lake Union Publishing through NetGalley, and this review reflects my honest opinion.

“A deliciously witty novel about second chances, secret identities, and the art of rising above life’s bitter moments."

Thank you, Lake Union Publishing, for sending me this ARC. 😊

This isn’t my normal genre, but this was honestly super cute and entertaining. Filled with the nitty-gritty of life and a bit of drama to keep the pages turning. The plot had multiple layers that enhanced the pacing, keeping me hooked from the very first page. I was able to binge this in less than 24 hours.

The only reason I am docking a star is that I was a little bummed by one of the turns of events later on in the book. With so much happening in the FMC's life, I think she deserved a smidge more happiness.

This book was a pleasant surprise - I definitely recommend giving it a chance even if, like myself, this isn't your usual genre.

A tender, emotional story about rediscovering yourself when life falls apart.

-♡-♡-♡-♡-♡-♡-♡-♡-♡-♡-♡-♡-♡-♡-♡-♡-

Just Add Happiness is one of those stories that sneaks up on your heart. It’s equal parts heartbreaking, hopeful, and quietly powerful. A reminder that it’s never too late to start over.

From the very first pages, my heart went out to Sophie. She’s the kind of woman who carries everyone else’s weight before even considering her own. Between a crumbling marriage, a complicated relationship with her mother, and the quiet exhaustion of always keeping the peace, she’s stuck in a life that no longer fits. You can feel her frustration, her fear, and that small spark of hope she keeps tucked away for “someday.”

When “someday” finally comes, it’s messy, emotional, and full of setbacks. Honestly, there were moments that genuinely stressed me out. 😭 She could never seem to catch a break, and it’s hard not to feel every hit right alongside her. But what I loved most was watching her slowly start to stand on her own two feet. Little by little, she finds her strength again, not because someone saves her, but because she saves herself. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🫶🏼

The side characters add so much heart to the story, especially Alicia, her loyal and hilarious best friend who’s always in her corner. And can’t forget about little Raisin. The cat who somehow manages to bring light and laughter when Sophie (and the reader 🫣) need it most.

This isn’t your typical romance. It’s more about rediscovering joy, friendship, and purpose after loss. There is a touch of sweetness and a hint of love, but it’s beautifully balanced with themes of self-growth, forgiveness, and learning that you’re never a burden for wanting to be seen.

Bittersweet and empowering, this one is a story for anyone who’s ever felt invisible and is ready to remember who they are again. 💜💜💜

thank you to netgalley and the publishers for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

i will start off by saying, this is not my typical read in some ways. i tend to migrate towards dark, suspense, fantasy, etc., where i like to escape reality a lot of the time.

this, was not any of that, but still was an amazing read.

Julie wrote about trauma, grief, and just how an older woman tries to find her own happiness in the world that seems so against women sometimes.

i did take a star politely because sometimes the fmc rattled off into her 'what if's' so much, i wanted to literally jump in the book and hug her and calm her down. which in ways, feels like my own head sometimes. but it also felt like sometimes it just dragged.

this was definitely a good read and plan to look forward to more her of her writing.

This book fell prey to trying to fit too much into one story. When I picked up the arc, I thought I was going into a love story, but it turned out to be more of a literary fiction with a romance subplot (that doesn’t get introduced until 40% in, which caused the book to feel a little slow moving).

I see what the author was trying to get across here, but there were a few too many moving parts for the story to feel fully fleshed out and believable. There were also a few practical inconsistencies that would pull me out of the story.

Overall, I enjoyed it well enough but didn’t love it. It’s a good read if you’re in the mood for more of a women’s fiction book, but don’t go in expecting a romance book.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

This was a nice feel good book that discussed important themes such as divorce, friendship, family, forgiveness, and love.
It prompted me to reflect on my own life at many points and it also puts difficult situations into perspective in a constructive way. The friendship between the main character and her best friend was beautiful too.

this was a wonderfully written portrayal of grief and what it feels like to try to navigate the world without one of your pillars. even with the distance between you and all the conflicting feelings, losing your mom is always a complicated experience.

sophie's journey to process a new world where she's no longer a daughter but is still a mother, while dealing with her (admittedly) horrible husband and a daughter moving onto adulthood feels realistic, and it's clear there's a lot of empathy in these words.

it's never too late to reinvent yourself and find your passion. it's never too late to choose yourself.

Overview
Just Add Happiness is a heartfelt contemporary romance that blends emotional depth with a comforting dose of feel-good charm. The story follows Sophie, a woman navigating life after a painful divorce, as she embarks on a journey of self-discovery, healing, and new beginnings. Along the way, she encounters unexpected friendships, rediscovered passions, and perhaps even the possibility of love again.
Falling under the genres of romance, this book includes several beloved tropes such as second chances, finding yourself after heartbreak, and the “meet-cute” spark. At its core, though, it’s also a story about resilience and emotional recovery showing how the past can shape us, but not necessarily define our future.

My thoughts
Just Add Happiness was a short and sweet emotional romance that struck a lovely balance between heavier themes and uplifting moments. I appreciated how it explored the impact of unhealthy relationships and abuse, not only on the individual but also on the wider family dynamic. At the same time, it offered plenty of the light-hearted, cliche-but-comforting moments that make chick lit so enjoyable.
My only small criticism was that the ending felt a little rushed. After nearly 300 pages of Sophie’s growth, self-reflection, and healing, I would have loved a bit more space for her new chapter to unfold. Still, it was a genuinely nice read - warm, emotional, and quietly hopeful.

This book is for the girls.

“There will always be someone determined to think we aren’t enough.” I passed her another treat. “Fact.” “I think as long as we know we’re enough, who cares about the naysayers?”

Lots of good quotes and funny moments, the characters are likeable and the women are supportive of each other.

There were a few moments that took me out of the book to remind me this was unrealistic at times but that’s what books are for, right? Of course she fits in her college pants and is a willowy baker who always finds the money she needs at just the right time- this is supposed to be a break from reality, giving us what we don’t always see or experience in our day to day life.
I think overall it’s a fun read and it brings awareness to the way many women are treated and how they internalize their treatment and their relationships.

The narrative starts to peal back some of the layers of what it means to be a woman responsible for so many invisible or unnoticed details and yet having to constantly remind ourselves and others of the respect we deserve while fighting our own insecurities.

If you like Gilmore Girls and Hallmark movies and Abby Jimenez books, I think you’ll like this book too.

This is a very good novel about freeing oneself from a disastrous marriage, rediscovering oneself and pursuing dreams you once left behind.

Sophie has a lot of internalized trauma after watching her parents' marriage when she was growing up. While it distanced her from her mother and she was adamant to not end up the same, she kinda does. Maybe Robert is not physically abusive, but he very much abuses her psychologically through the whole marriage.

I found Sophie annoying at times, but she really tries to come into her own. We meet her at the point in her life when she finally decides to leave Robert. And then her dreams of being a baker come into life step by step, while trying to survive a messy divorce from a lawyer, nonetheless. That's when she finds Lucas, a sweet owner of a French restaurant.

I enjoyed a story about proper adults (finally!), that proves it's never too late to make changes in your life and do what actually makes you happy. Sophie goes on a rediscovery journey while dealing with her trauma and slipping back to her old ways from time to time, which I found refreshingly realistic. There's no magic wand moment here, nothing happens just because, like in life. Relationships are complicated and Sophie navigating through hers with her mother, her daughter, husband, friends and new boss is delightful to follow.

One big minus for me was the reveal plot point towards the end. Victoria is a b*ch, and I didn't find the moment powerful, I kinda felt bad for Sophie she couldn't do this on her terms and really come into her own through that. The moment felt very much forced.

Anyway, this is a very good novel, though the romance is more on the sidelines (which in no way takes any stars from it!).

Thank you to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy.

Julie Hatcher writes women’s fiction so well! Her heroines are always so real, facing common challenges that all readers face. Her newest release (coming 12/30/25) is the perfect story about second chances, grief, and building a life you are proud to live.

Sophie’s spirits have been diminished after living years with an emotionally abusive husband; she knows she wants/needs to leave Robert and has been secretly baking for customers as a side hustle to save up for financial freedom. When her mother unexpectedly passes, she finds herself with a potential ‘out’ in the form of her mother’s small neglected home. As she works up the courage to strike out on her own, readers follow Sophie as she works through her childhood memories and fears about her daughter’s upcoming engagement while she attempts to broaden her culinary career at a local French restaurant. Hatcher does a great job making Sophie’s story a balance of setbacks (unwelcome home pests, contentious divorce proceedings, and Sophie’s grief) with snippets of hope (found family surrounding her, a new nose ring!, and the slow-burn connection with her new chef boss). Readers will adore Sophie’s determination and growth as she blossoms into a baker who no longer has to hide her skills and spirts.

This new release is perfect for readers who enjoy stories that are witty and lighthearted on the surface, but do not shy away from the messy reality of leaving a controlling marriage or dealing with family secrets. Be sure to keep a snack near by as you dive into this one, as the descriptions of pastries and cupcakes are mouth-watering!!

many thanks and gratitude to NetGalley and Brilliance Publishing for providing me with an early audiobook copy of Just Add Happiness by Julie Hatcher in exchange for my thoughts and honest review.

i enjoyed this sweet (no pun intended!) novel that is about self-discovery, starting over, and finding love when (and where) you least expect it. the main character, Sophie, finally decides to leave her abusive marriage and take a chance on herself. she’s also grappling with the loss of her mother, a person that she had a complicated relationship with. while navigating life on her own, she encounters setbacks and obstacles, and while this may sound like a bit of a downer, it is anything but! this novel is uplifting and features characters worth rooting for; the humor is fantastic and there are many heartwarming, stand-up-and-cheer moments.

i found Sophie to be such a well-written, realistic character. she has talents that she keeps hidden but is given the opportunity to let them shine. yes, it’s a hard road to her independence but so worth the experience. also, her cat, Raisin, is a hoot!

the narrator of this audiobook is Amanda Stribling and she is phenomenal. her voice captures the emotions and energy where appropriate and each voice is distinctive. the entire listening experience was great. i highly recommend listening to this when the book is released!

Just Add Happiness will be available on December 30, 2025.

If this book teaches you one thing it is this: It is never too late to make a change in your life. We follow our main character as she is hit with blow after blow that culminates in her finally divorcing her husband and making a stand on her own away from the toxic relationship it was in.

What I liked best about this book was how it realistically portrayed the FMC dealing with life's challenges. Things don't suddenly happen, you make them happen. The story deals with themes of toxic relationships, standing up for yourself, taking charge of your life, exploring who you can be, and finding love through it all.

The story really picked up, but it took about 40% of the book before I was hooked. It's a slow start but has a strong end.

Thank you NetGalley for a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

"Just Add Happiness" was a satisfying read. In this well-written book, the author tells a compelling story about a woman in her mid-forties navigating her way past an emotionally abusive marriage, low self-worth, and a broken relationship with her mother. The story's deliberate pace allows readers to fully learn about the characters and understand the complex dynamics of the main character, Sophie’s, relationships. My one critique is that the author had the main character go down rabbit holes of negative 'what-ifs' a little too frequently, and I often found myself wanting her to "chill out." Additionally, the story could have benefited from a stronger element of personal therapy, which the main character so clearly needed. Despite this, the book was a perfect blend of laugh-out-loud moments and some truly bad behavior. While I would have liked a bit more romance woven into the plot, the light touch was endearing. I would highly recommend this book, especially for all the 40-somethings out there who are still finding their way. I read an advanced copy from the publisher via NetGallery.

What a whirlwind of a book!

When I first saw the cover and title I thought it was going to be fluffy and happy the whole time. A woman finding herself after ending her marriage yadda yadda yadda. I was honestly not expecting the amount of emotional growth and the strength of women packed into this audiobook. I absolutely applaud Sophie for all she did and her journey. Her friendship with Alicia was perfect too. Everyone needs a friend like that.

Amanda Stribling did a great job of bringing the story and whole cast of characters to life! I really enjoyed her work.

This was such an emotional read for me. The author did an amazing job representing emotional abuse and finding ways to try and overcome those ideas placed in the main character’s (Sophie) head. I loved the growth of the Sophie with the support of her friends. The romance was a cute bonus as well. Definitely recommend

This was my first NetGalley read and I enjoyed the experience.

I'm a romance girlie and I like to use them as palette cleansers after heavy reads or just a bad day in real life.

I chose this book because of the cover and I thought the title was cute. From the looks of it, a baker romance story with a cat, maybe a little cozy read for the start of fall.

It is not any of those things, truly. There are romance elements, but I wouldn't call this a romance. The FMC enjoys baking but she herself isn't quite sure she's a baker. Honestly, the main motif here was uncertainty. I felt that all the thoughts, conflicts, and relationships were "underbaked", so to speak.

You're reading half way through the book before you hit a character that the FMC shows romantic interest in. This book had potential to be a great romance if maybe 3 relationships were chosen, perhaps the FMC's husband, daughter, and boss relationships and fully developed them. I wanted to care about these characters, but didn't. I wanted to root for something, but couldn't. I ended up looking forward to the book's ending so I can move on to another book.

A good romance is a book where I'm sad it's over, I want it to continue, or I'm haunted thinking about these characters all day.

I'm really let down by the cover, I thought it was going to be treat. I'm rating this 3 stars because I appreciate the real life issues it talked about and the feelings that go with it.

At one point, Sophie, the FMC talks to her best friend:

Alicia: "Please say you go the last available room... And there's only one bed."
Sophie: "I think that only happens in romance novels."
Alicia: "Why can't this be a romance novel?"
Sophie: "Robert put a real damper on the plot"

GIRL. What are we doing here?!?!?

Julie Hatcher has delivered a remarkably authentic portrait of personal transformation in Just Add Happiness, a novel that refuses to sugarcoat the messy realities of rebuilding a life from scratch. What could have been a predictable escape-from-abuse narrative instead becomes something more nuanced and ultimately more powerful—a meditation on resilience that feels both uplifting and grounded in genuine human experience.

The novel’s greatest strength lies in its unflinching examination of how people survive impossible circumstances. Hatcher doesn’t romanticize her protagonist’s situation or rush toward easy solutions. Instead, she creates space for the complex emotions that accompany major life changes: relief mixed with terror, hope tempered by practical concerns, joy shadowed by lingering trauma. This emotional honesty elevates what could have been simple wish fulfillment into something more substantive.

The culinary elements serve as more than mere backdrop—they function as both literal survival mechanism and metaphorical healing process. Hatcher understands that food represents comfort, creativity, and connection, making the baking business feel essential rather than coincidental to the protagonist’s journey. The progression from secret enterprise to public profession mirrors the character’s own evolution from hidden to visible, creating thematic coherence that strengthens the entire narrative.

What distinguishes this from other women’s fiction exploring similar territory is Hatcher’s attention to community building. The supporting characters don’t exist merely to prop up the protagonist but form a genuine network of relationships that feel organic and lived-in. These connections provide realistic counterpoint to the isolation that defines the opening chapters, showing how healing happens not in solitude but through carefully chosen relationships.

The writing maintains impressive emotional range without becoming manipulative. Hatcher finds humor in dark places without minimizing genuine pain, creating moments of lightness that feel earned rather than forced. The dialogue captures natural speech patterns while advancing both plot and character development, demonstrating technical skill that serves the story’s emotional goals.

The romantic elements develop with appropriate caution, acknowledging that someone emerging from an abusive relationship needs time and space to rediscover their own desires. Rather than rushing toward romantic resolution, the novel allows for gradual trust-building that feels psychologically authentic. This restraint serves both character development and reader satisfaction.

The setting works effectively as both literal location and symbolic fresh start. The inherited house functions as perfect metaphor—something with good bones that requires significant work to become truly habitable. Hatcher avoids heavy-handed symbolism while still allowing the physical renovation to mirror emotional rebuilding.

While the novel occasionally treads familiar ground in the women’s fiction genre, Hatcher’s execution feels fresh enough to justify the familiar elements. The focus on practical concerns—legal fees, housing repairs, business development—grounds the story in reality while still providing the emotional satisfaction readers seek.

For readers who like:
- Character-driven stories
- Culinary fiction
- Community-centered narratives

Final Verdict
Just Add Happiness succeeds by treating its difficult subject matter with respect while never forgetting to provide genuine hope. Hatcher has crafted a story that acknowledges the complexity of starting over without losing sight of the possibility for genuine happiness. This is comfort reading that doesn’t shy away from discomfort, ultimately creating something both satisfying and meaningful.

December 22, 2025
I picked up Just Add Happiness after five days of not being able to read anything and somehow this book reminded me why I love reading. I finished it in a single sitting wrapped in a quiet steady kind of hope. As Sophie says, “Blooming flowers always gave me hope for new beginnings, and I was in desperate need of exactly that,” and that feeling runs through every page.

Sophie’s journey from fear invisibility and self doubt to strength and self trust felt achingly real. She asks the question so many women are afraid to voice, “What if I leave the security that this life provides me, and I end up even more miserable?” The answer is not handed to her easily. Growth here is messy terrifying and brave. “The devil I knew was manageable. The devil I didn’t know everything outside my carefully cultivated life was terrifying.” And yet she keeps going because sometimes “being spontaneous and brave proved far better than remaining small and unnoticed.”

One of the most powerful things about this book is how it redefines heroism. “Heroines didn’t have to lead armies to be heroic.” Sometimes it takes strength just to smile when you would rather cry. To show up. To keep living. Sophie’s inner wounds believing she was “a disappointment and a burden” are handled with so much care especially as she confronts generational pain and chooses to do better. “My mother would not die drunk and alone. She deserved so much better than that. Even if she didn’t think so.”

The women friendships are everything. Alicia and Ilona hold this story together with wisdom honesty and radical kindness. Alicia’s words felt like a mantra. “Because you can do anything you choose and find real happiness wherever you want.” And later “There will always be someone determined to think we aren’t enough. Happy people don’t shit on other humans.” Ilona’s grounded warmth “Things don’t matter once the person who loved them is gone” and “As long as you keep working on it life’s going to look amazing real soon” was exactly the anchor Sophie needed. This book says it clearly. Women know how difficult it is to be women yet we judge and berate each other for making different choices. Here women standing up for women truly shines.

Lucas is pure green forest energy. Steady kind and emotionally safe. His gentleness heals without trying to fix. “You gave your heart to a man who didn’t take care of it. That’s not your fault. You loved. That is a brave thing.” Through him Sophie dares to ask “Was it possible that some men really do cherish their wives?” and slowly relearns trust. Being loved does not make her smaller. “It was overwhelming to be so starkly visible and unapologetically wanted. I was lovable desirable and worthy.”

What stayed with me most is the insistence on choice. “If at any point I became unhappy with my circumstances I had the power to change it all.” Even when everything feels impossible “I did a lot of impossible things these days. What was one more?” Sophie chooses herself again and again. “I was free and worthy of joy even if others didn’t understand my choices.” And finally “Whatever else happened I would keep choosing happiness.”

By the end the transformation feels earned and luminous. “For the first time in a long time I didn’t want to hide.” The closing moment NOW OPEN! THE VISIBLE BAKER 111 FRONT STREET BECAUSE EVERYONE DESERVES TO BE SEEN is not just about a business. It is about a woman who stopped making herself small.

This book is warm empowering and quietly life affirming. It understands how women disappear and how brave it is to step back into the light. “There was so much life to live. There wasn’t enough time to live it.” Five stars without hesitation.

Okay, so Just Add Happiness by Julie Hatcher is exactly what it promises: a warm, feel-good story that sprinkles joy like confetti but also digs a little deeper into what it really means to be happy. It’s cozy, uplifting, and the kind of book that makes you want to curl up with tea, a blanket, and maybe a notebook to jot down your own happiness goals.

The premise follows our FMC, who isn’t just floating through life on autopilot, she’s actively wrestling with the fact that “happiness” isn’t something you can just pick up at Target (though wouldn’t that be nice?). She’s had her share of disappointments, she’s juggling responsibilities, and she’s questioning whether she’s even allowed to chase joy when life is messy. Then, through relationships, personal challenges, and a bit of self-discovery, she learns that happiness isn’t a destination, it’s something you add into the everyday, in small and meaningful ways.

The tone of this book is what really sold me. Hatcher writes with humor and warmth, balancing laugh-out-loud moments with the kind of poignant observations that stop you in your tracks. There’s witty banter, heartfelt conversations, and just enough romantic spark to keep you swooning while you reflect. It feels like talking to your funniest, wisest friend who always knows when to crack a joke and when to hand you tissues.

I especially loved how the characters felt real. The FMC isn’t perfect, she makes mistakes, overthinks, and second-guesses herself, which made her so relatable. The love interest (yes, there’s a romance tucked in here!) was sweet without being cookie-cutter, and their dynamic added a soft, hopeful layer to the story. The side characters were also charming and gave the book that community feel, like you’re part of a circle of friends cheering each other on.

Now, why 4 stars instead of 5? A couple of sections dragged a little. Some of the “lesson moments” leaned a bit too close to self-help territory, which slowed the pacing. I also found myself craving a touch more conflict in the romance side, it felt a little too smooth at times. But honestly, those are minor quibbles in an otherwise delightful read.

What makes this book shine is its message: happiness doesn’t come in grand gestures or perfect plans. It’s in the little things, laughter over burnt cookies, taking risks even when they scare you, choosing joy even when life throws curveballs. By the time I turned the last page, I felt lighter, hopeful, and ready to look for sparks of joy in my own day.

Final thoughts: Just Add Happiness is heartfelt, funny, cozy, and uplifting. It’s a book that reminds you to embrace imperfection and seek joy in the everyday. Four stars from me because it’s charming, encouraging, and gave me that warm glow I want from a comfort read, even if a few chapters could’ve been tighter.

My Thoughts: 👉 Overall, I loved this story. Only reason I’m not giving a full 5 stars is because the FMC was occasionally aggravating in her naïveté during the divorce proceedings when it came to underestimating what her husband would do. As a woman who’s supposed to be 46 years old, her thinking process seemed like a younger woman at times. Perhaps it was because she had been cloistered away as the dutiful housewife and mother? Idk 🤷🏼‍♀️ it was just frustrating. - That being said, I loved everything else. Be warned that this story could be very triggering for some people (check TW’s!), but I loved the overall theme of a woman taking back her autonomy and finding a backbone to say no to being used and abused. It also discussed the bullying that moms go through when it comes to having to prepare baked goods for child functions, something I’ve never heard mentioned in a novel before, but can totally see how it’s applicable to real life! - Also the search for a bio parent, finding a job to support yourself after having been mostly dependent on your wealthy husband for so long, finding an unexpected second chance at love and learning to allow your child the room to grow without constantly pushing your own trauma on them. I felt that this story held so many valuable life lessons! I can’t even list them all. - I did see some reviews where it was said that too many different things were happening in this story, but I enjoyed all of it and felt it was easy to follow along with. The audiobook was a really good listen as well!

Also, I wouldn’t call this a romance novel. It feels more like women’s fiction with a hint of romance thrown in the second half of the story.

“I was invisible for many years, as I think too many women are. I cooked, cleaned, cared for my daughter and managed the emotions and mental load of everyone in my family. I did that for decades and I did that alone.”

📚Just Add Happiness
✍🏻Julie Hatcher
Blurb:

My Thoughts:
Sophie! In the midst of a bitter divorce, she does the best she can. Her soon to be ex is ruthless and conniving and so full of himself that at the end, justice really is served. I liked her friendship with her boss Lucas and the balm he is to her in her hard times. Also, her best friend Alicia is such a rock star in how she is there for Sophie through it all with laughter shared and tears.
I liked the storyline of a middle-aged woman rebuilding her life and her heartwarming relationship with her daughter and friends, but the romance is disappointing and just a tacked-on afterthought that isn't really explored. This is an American book taking place in Southern Virginia which accounts for the setting feeling a little alien to me. However, if you like baking, female solidarity, self-discovery and second chances, this is for you but be prepared for a lot of murderous thoughts towards Robert.

Puntos importantes a considerar:

Julie Hatcher, the Author of “Just Add Happiness” has added heartfelt and emotional ingredients in her recipe that makes this a well-written book. The Genres for this tasteful book are Fiction, Romance, Women’s Humorous Fiction, Divorce, Family, and Mothers and Daughters. The Author vividly describes the scenery, the plot, the food, and the dramatic and colorful characters. The characters can be described as complex, complicated, some sweet, and some salty, and spicy.

The Female Protagonist, Sophie Bianco has an estranged relationship with her sick mother, a protective relationship with her daughter, and an abusive and emotionally unbalanced relationship with her husband. Sophie finds baking adds to her happiness and also contributes to her being able to afford an attorney to divorce her narcissistic and bitter husband. Actually, Sophie has a unique idea to make cupcakes for parents that need them for their children’s birthdays in school and calls herself “The Invisible Baker”. The parents pass the cupcakes off as their own creations.

Before Sophie’s mother passes away, she reveals some dark secrets, that contribute to Sophie feeling vulnerable and having trust and feelings of no self worth. At every chance he gets, Sophie’s husband ignores or, or emotionally gaslights her. After Sophie’s mother passes away, Sophie gets the courage to see a Divorce Attorney, and her husband does everything in his power to make her life miserable. The house that Sophie inherits from her mother requires much fixing up, and Sophie looks for a job. She still is “The Invisible Baker”, but takes a job as a pastry chef. She tries to keep her baking job a secret.

I appreciate how the author discusses the importance of family, friends, courage to have a new beginning, self worth, love and hope. I enjoyed this wonderful story and highly recommend it.

I received a complimentary review copy of this book from Netgalley.

I always have to add the disclaimer that Julie is a dear friend. But, folks, I am a librarian, and I have read a lot of really bad books. I can say that Julie's is not one of them. In fact, I have enjoyed this book more than any of her others, and I think she is only going to grow in this genre. If you didn't know, Julie has written a boatload of cozy mysteries as well as romantic suspense with Harlequin. But women's/book club fiction has allowed her to spread her wings and really develop characters. This story is complex and sad at times but ultimately joyful.

Sophie Bianco is stuck in a hateful, loveless marriage. She's been saving up for a divorce by starting her business, The Invisible Baker, where she provides homemade bakery to busy moms who are being judged for bringing store-bought cookies to every PTA event. When Sophie's mom dies and she inherits her house, she now has a place to stay and a way to get out, but she is still struggling. Her ex, Robert, is a cruel man, trying to find every way to sabotage her. Their daughter, Camilla, is on the verge of getting married. Sophie is afraid that her daughter might end up in the same boat as she was. And Sophie also finds out where her anonymous father might be living--in Paris.

Sophie's life turns around when she becomes the pastry chef at Chez Margot, a local French bistro owned by a charming widower. While Lucas, the love interest, is not the main focus of the story--Sophie is the driving force of her life changes--the restaurant is a catalyst for Sophie to fully harness her abilities and show the world what she can offer.

Sophie's voice is so clear that you'll feel like you're talking to her directly, and the novel is so funny and sweet. I really hope everyone loves it.

At forty-six, Sophie Bianco’s life feels half-baked—stuck in a controlling marriage, estranged from her critical mother, and quietly pouring herself into The Invisible Baker, her secret business helping other moms create Pinterest-perfect moments while she stays unseen.
When her mother’s death collides with the final breaking point in her marriage, Sophie takes a leap. Armed with divorce papers and her savings, she returns to her childhood home—only to find hoarder-level chaos, plumbing nightmares, and an ex-husband bent on revenge. As her daughter announces an engagement that mirrors Sophie’s own past mistakes, she’s forced to confront how easily history can repeat itself.
Taking a job as a pastry chef brings unexpected joy, purpose, and a spark with the restaurant’s charming owner. But with family drama and new possibilities pulling her in different directions, Sophie must finally face the question she’s avoided for years: who is she when she’s no longer invisible?
✨ My thoughts:
I absolutely loved that the main character is middle-aged and bravely reinventing her life after years in an emotionally abusive marriage. Sophie believed she was being strong by staying for the sake of peace, and I appreciated how powerfully that idea was explored—especially during the book club discussion that mirrored her own situation. This story beautifully captures the weight of societal expectations placed on wives and mothers, and how freeing it can be to finally choose yourself.
A heartfelt, hopeful read about second chances, self-worth, and finding your voice. 🧁📚

Sophie Bianco stays in a loveless marriage with a controlling and emotionally abusive spouse for the sake of her daughter. She cleverly creates a business providing scrumptious baked goods for mothers too overwhelmed to produce homemade treats for school events under the title of “The Invisible Baker” – invisible to the public and her husband as well. Over the years she manages to accrue a nest egg to hire a divorce lawyer. When Sophie’s mother dies and leaves her a house (albeit in nightmare condition), she takes the leap and leaves her beautiful but miserable home. The story that ensues is filled with sadness, fear, humor, and romance as Sophie navigates her new life with courage and resilience.

I thoroughly enjoyed rooting for this likeable protagonist as she struggles to maintain her business and her equilibrium in the face of her soon-to-be-ex- husband’s vengeful actions. The support system she has in her longtime best friend, her neighbor and her work colleagues at the restaurant provide stability in a chaotic time. While there are other novels I have read with similar themes, this one was particularly inspiring and kept me engaged to the satisfying conclusion.

My thanks to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for the privilege of reviewing this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I’m giving this book five shining stars

What touched me most was how beautifully it shows the healing power of a healthy relationship after leaving an abusive one. Watching Sophie grow and flourish honestly made me so happy, almost like I was cheering her on from the sidelines.

Her ex-husband though… I hated him so much that at one point I actually wanted to throw my Kindle at the wall. Then I realised he wasn’t worth damaging my most prized possession over—that’s how strongly the writing made me feel!

There’s so much wonderful character development in this story, and Sophie especially is written in a way that made me wish she was my best friend in real life. She’s strong, warm, and someone you can’t help but root for.

I also connected with this story on such a personal level. I saw parts of my own life reflected in Sophie’s journey, which made the book even more powerful for me. One big takeaway is that I want everything Sophie has for myself—proof that good things still happen to kind people, and that the right people will stick by you through the hardest moments and celebrate with you in the good ones.

This book gave me hope, joy, and comfort all at once.

Thank you to NetGalley, Lake Union Publishing & Julie Hatcher for allowing me to read an ARC Copy of Just Add Happiness in return for an honest review.
