Elana Bishop, the Consort of External Affairs and Diplomacy, never expected her diplomatic mission to become a murder investigation.
Two years after discovering she was actually a vampire, Elana attends the V7 summit—the decade's most important gathering of vampire city-states—hoping to build alliances against the dangerous ex-Arbiter Ahura Tarsin.
When summit attendees begin dying under mysterious circumstances, Elana must use her unique insight power to uncover the killer while navigating treacherous vampire politics.
Each death sends the summit further into chaos, derailing her crucial alliance-building efforts.
Elana races against time to solve the murders, convince skeptical vampire leaders to join forces, and stop Tarsin's plan before it's too late.
Will Elana unite the fractured vampire world against a common enemy? Or will ancient prejudices and fresh corpses doom both vampires and humans to Tarsin's twisted vision of the future?
Pick up Wind, Waves, and Wetwork now and dive into a thrilling world of supernatural politics, ancient powers, and deadly conspiracies!
That one word sentence is the final sentence in this deeply entertaining installment, instantly transforming what had been a light-hearted homage to Agatha Christie into a dark and slightly terrifying thriller.
Don’t worry, however, Mike’s Author’s Notes will set you to chuckling whether you want to or not. This in turn will have the fortunate side-effect of programing your subconscious to find laughter in the next day. So all will end well.
Getting back to the book, I experienced a mental guffaw when Elena compared the mystery to the game of Clue and old-school mysteries alla Agatha Christie, since I was already starting to draw the same analogies myself. In many ways, and I wouldn’t be surprised to find Mike did this intentionally, this book really DID feel like an homage to Miss Marple, and I’m totally ok with that.
Having your sci-fi vampire series transform into a real whodunnit is great fun. Just read it, and you’ll see what I mean.
Now here’s the best part…. In part because the characters themselves are sequestered away from the rest of the world, this book can stand proudly on its own. Even if you have read nothing else in the SpiderKing Universe, you can start here. Mind you, you’re going to catch a few spoilers once you go back to the rest of the series, so perhaps that’s NOT the best suggestion I could make. Still, this would be a valid entry point into this world if you’re so inclined.
This is one of my favorite Anderle series. The settings are so imaginative. The characters are so engaging, I keep thinking of them days after reading. The plot is a surprise and you can’t help rooting for the main characters. This book is no exception. It’s a whirlwind of people, and at first I had trouble keeping track of them. But by the end you’re engaged in each one’s story and struggles. Such character development!
Enjoyable series. This book was for me one of the best so far. I really enjoyed the investigations and the negotiations that Elana had to do. She does have a bit of a silver spoon evidently since she can talk her way around everything and it all seems to go well for her. I was waiting for Leif to pull out something about a Prophesy related to her - glad that didn't happen. Dr Moravian was especially interesting, and I hope there is more about her in future books. Looking forward to book 8
Elana has been chosen to go to the big Vampire convention to try and get all of the City-States to work together against Tarsin, before she manages to finish her take over plans. An exciting book in this series with lots of action, intrigue, and new allies. As usual with this series, I did not want to put the book down, and I am so looking forward to the next book.
