This standalone romance is a "brother's best friend," "best friend's little sister" romance in the Meet Me at Midnight world.
Many moons ago, a dynamic duo of romance authors teamed up under the pseudonym Max Monroe, and, well, the rest is history...
Max Monroe is the New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author of more than thirty contemporary romance titles. Favorite writing partners and long time friends, Max and Monroe strive to live and write all the fun, sexy swoon so often missing from their Facebook newsfeed. Sarcastic by nature, their two writing souls feel like they’ve found their other half. This is their most favorite adventure thus far.
This one started off with a bang! Everyone backs out of the vacation last minute leaving just Avery and her brother’s best friend. Then more horrible and crazy stuff happens almost immediately that I don’t want to spoil.
This was a fun and spicy story. She is a virgin at 27 which was a stretch in my opinion, but it made for a fun plot. I saw one of the ‘twists’ coming from a mile away, but I still enjoyed the ending when it happened.
I think this one wasn’t as funny as the last one that I read by this author was. There were some funny one liners, but def not as much humor. This was good, but def not my favorite by this author. I would give it a 3.5 rounded up. I think it would make a good movie though.

✨ Rating: 5 ⭐️ 🫧 Vibes: wild, tropical and thrilling 🎶 Song: love me to heaven - jonas brothers 📖 Favourite Quote: "I know one thing for sure - I get to spend forever with the two most important people in my life." 📚 Would I recommend? yes! 💬 tldr thoughts: Five stars. Unforgettable. Unputdownable!
In the package: 📦 brother's best friend 📦 rich party girl x adrenaline junkie 📦 stranded on an island 📦 dual POVs
Plot: Avery, a free-spirited party girl terrified of commitment, ends up stranded on a remote island with Henry — her brother’s adventurous best friend and the one man she swore she’d never fall for. As tropical nights and forced proximity ignite their undeniable chemistry, when they return home, they must decide if they're willing to commit to each other.
Thoughts: This was my first time reading a book from these authors and I am OBSESSED. This book is the perfect blend of forbidden tension, laugh-out-loud banter, and soul-deep emotion. Avery and Henry’s chemistry is off the charts — the kind that makes you kick your feet and giggle 🤭
I loved Avery’s growth. She starts as this self-absorbed, party-loving wild child who’s terrified of being truly seen, and watching Henry slowly break through those walls? SWOON. Henry is the perfect mix of adventurous and grounded — the kind of hero who feels dangerous to your heart but also safe in every other way. Neither of them were relationship-type people but ended up being what each other needed. 🥹 There is a trope in this book that I don't particularly enjoy but it worked in this case, so I'm not mad about it!

Thank you Hambright PR and Max Monroe for the arc!
Max Monroe has done it again! I was so excited to get my hands on this book and boy did it completely sweep me away! I adored everything about it and the way it made me feel reading it. Everything about this book just flowed beautifully: the romance, the tension and banter, the characters, the emotions. I was laughing, I was giddy, I was kicking my feet, not to mention you easily fall in love with the characters. This book is technically the second book so I would recommend reading "Meet Me at Midnight" first.
I loved Avery and Henry's story! First you just can't go wrong with a brother's best friend trope. The banter and chemistry between these two were perfection. My favorite aspect of this book was Avery's character growth, especially if you read book one and see how much she has changed from that book to this one.
What to Expect ❤️Brother's best friend ❤️Forced Proximity ❤️Dual POV ❤️Rom-Com ❤️Stranded Island ❤️Banter & Chemistry
I highly recommend that you book this book up and give it a read. I can't wait to read another book by this author.
Huge shoutout and thank you to Max Monroe and Hambright Pr for gifting me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Henry is her older brother's BFF and the whole gang was supposed to fly to a private villa in the Bahamas for a fun weekend. But instead of her bestie and brother and two other friends... it's only her and Henry. The guy she's been crushing on since she was a basically a toddler. They start arguing before the plane even lifts off the ground and unfortunately that's only the beginning. Because they do not arrive at their luxurious villa. Anyone got a spare volleyball to paint a face on?
LET THE FUN TIMES BEGIN!

ADORABLE! That was so cute and funny and sweet and a bit sad and exciting and adventurous. First we're on that crazy dangerous and romantic adventure for a while - just the two of them - and the second half of the book it's back to life in the real world. A world they both feel they don't fit into anymore. At least not yet. After what they survived. So they spend most of their time together. Secretly.
That was just adorable. I loved reading it. We get to see lots of Beau and Juniper and little Addie. Great cast of people! And I loved how Avery never really changed from the hilarious fashionista IT girl but she grew up a lot in this book.
It wasn't the re-invention of the rom-com - we've read dozens of books in this genre - but pff - who cares. It's why we love romance. There's always something new or funnier or better or whatever!
LEAVE BEFORE I LOVE YOU was such a cute brother's-best-friend Rom-Com. Funny, sexy, exciting and all the things! Run to your nearest book dealer for your own Henny - this one is mine!

"Leave Before I Love You" by Max Monroe is a brother's best friend, forced proximity, enemies-to-lovers-ish, "it's always been you" rom-com featuring a desert island deserting, an eventual secret relationship, tons of snappy, witty banter, and lots of spice. Main characters Avery and Henry get stranded on a deserted island when they are forced to junp out of a plane and skydive into nothingness to save themselves after a tragedy strikes. Avery is a rich princess who thinks work is optional on the outside, but she harbors a secret self, one Henry has always been able to notice because he has been in love with her forever, even when he denied it. Henry is basically the embodiment of a TikTok log-cutting thirst trapper. He is willing to do anything he can to save them from certain death while they are stranded. When they are rescued after almost 2 weeks, reality infiltrates the little bubble they have created for themselves, and they have to learn how to exist together in the real world. Can they make it work? There is a lot to like about this book. The characters have hidden depths to them and are intriguing, even when they are acting spoiled or privileged. And man, Max Monroe does a stellar job of making Avery seem *so* privileged. I've never read a book that discusses designer brands quite as much as this one does. The layers of each character begin to peel away as they slowly accept each other into their lives, revealing the true depths below. I adored Henry so, so much. He has had a lot of tragedy in his life recently, and he comes across as so genuine and endearing. I loved the banter between them as characters. I think this book it a liiiiittle bit too long, though, which is my only complaint. There are a few repetitive moments here and there. Luckily, audiobook narrators Will Damron and M.K. Blackwood do an excellent job bringing these characters to life in fun, attention-grabbing ways. I enjoyed this for the most part!
Thank you to NetGalley, Max Monroe, and Dreamscape Media for the complimentary ALC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this review.
What happens when you end up stranded on an island with your brother’s best friend? You get this delicious masterpiece.
Honestly the banter and vibes between Avery and Henry are so so good. I wasn’t a huge fan of Avery in Meet Me at Midnight, but her and Henry together really grew on me. There’s just something that never gets old about an MMC who would do anything to protect her.
Watching them develop both on and off the island was such a treat. Thank you so much to Hambright PR for the ARC + ALC. The narrators did such a great job!
I was in a constant state of contemplating DNF’ing this story. The pendulum was swinging from fun, romantic to cringe and awful and sometimes even boring. ⚖️
I didn’t, and that means something, I Dnf loudly and proudly. But this was one of the worst books I actually finished. That doesn’t mean it’s terrible, because I wouldn’t have finished it if was. I hope that makes sense.
Avery is one of my all time least favorite FMC’s. She is spoiled and incapable of taking care of herself, and I did not understand the lovable aspects of her. I know they are there, because I am being told that it’s there. But…. Henry literally gentle parents her most of the time. Nor is she the sharpest tool in the toolbox.
Avery and Henry have known each other their whole lives, and they end up on a deserted island together for 2 weeks. This was a unique “meet cute” and it was so fun and nice to see their relationship grow naturally without any outside influences. That is what I liked about the story. But there is also a lot I didn’t like. Avery has a hard time telling the truth, to everyone around her, and the ending had me pulling my hair out. No spoilers!
My biggest problem with the story was I didn’t buy into Avery’s person or her alleged “double” life. I found her shallow and unrealistic. She was 2 dimensional and Henry was a little invisible. I just didn’t feel them.
The constant brand name dropping was 🤮 The mini Kelly bag was epic cringe and had it not been in the epilogue, that would have been my last strawberry. 4 epilogues??
Should you read it? Probably not. It’s not going on my list of recommendations 😂
Overall, I'd probably give this book 3.5 stars, will round up. The audiobook narration was great! I absolutely loved Henry, but I wasn't the biggest fan of Avery. Their relationship progression was written really well, even though I didn't love Avery, I couldn't help but root for them. This book had some good humor, I chuckled out loud several times, mostly at Avery's antics. The story line was interesting and made me wonder if I could ever survive something like that, definitely not by myself. This book gave me Still Beating by Jennifer Hartmann and a touch of One True Loves by Taylor Jenkins Reid vibes.
*Dual POV *Brother's Best Friend *Forced Proximity *Trauma Bonding *Stranded on an island
Format: ebook and audiobook - narrated by Will Damron and M.K. Blackwood
Thank you NetGalley, Max Monroe, and Dreamscape Media for the ALC and ARC.
First I would like to thank Netgalley for sending me this book in exchange for an honest review. I went in this book with people saying it's enemies to lovers however Avery and Henry were friends and were on good terms. I didn't like how the author kept mentioning luxurious brands to describe our MC's clothes, I know it's a way to show that she wears expensive things but it felt like a sponsorship at some point. The romance was rushed, the author kept mentioning how much her virginity meant to her only for her to make her lose it to Henry without any consideration which is unlike her character. Chemistry between them wasn't good. Avery is also a very hollow character that I didn't like at all. When they were falling out of the helicopter all she could care about was 'will i die a virgin'? Okay sure whatever. She said that she doesn't work or do anything but takes money from her dad and mind you she is almost 30, and then reason is? because people don't expect much from her, Like girl that's not a reason that's an excuse. Also Henry was kind of problematic he kept thinking "how can she be a virign but still be dating left and right", I didn't like that at all. The relationship was only sexual and they didn't have any chemistry, it didn't feel like a romance novel but a friends with benefits one, they only thought about each other in a sexual way. They didn't get to know each other better they just had constant sex. But the most annoying thing was the cheating trope, both were dating other people and they decided to have sex multiple times (SPOILER HERE) and when they were rescued and went home, they were annoyed at their partners and left them in such a cruel way, even Henry's gf told him "I was here mouring you and you were fcking her?" And honestly she couldn't be more right. Characters were unlikable, I felt like Avery was really objectified and overall it wasn't for me.
I definitely binge read this in one sitting, the book took off running right from the get go!
When Avery, her best friend June, her brother (who also happens to be June’s husband), and 3 of his friends make plans to go on a Caribbean vacation for New Years, a multitude of things happen leaving Avery going alone with her brothers adrenaline junkie best friend Henry. Henry had the brilliant idea that it would be fun to sky dive to their destination. What starts off as an already stressful vacation turns into an absolute nightmare!
Henry is a playboy, but the kind of playboy that is reliable, a secret boy scout, and definitely puts a mask on for the world to see. Avery is a spoiled rich party girl, who kind of gives rich girl air head vibes, but she also has the biggest heart. While she did make me say WTH a few times she absolutely grew on me.
When their world gets turned upside down, they’re thrown into the forced proximity moment that rivals all forced proximity moments. The only thing she can think is they need to leave before she falls in love.
-brothers best friend -survival journey -forced proximity moments -secret relationship
Thank you so much to Hambright PR & Max Monroe for the gifted copy in exchange for my honest review
Ugh, this book could have been a solid five-star read but the last 30% of it totally ruined it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The amount of disappointment and frustration was killing me as I really did want to like this book and I actually did, especially the first half of it. Max Monroe's books had always been hit-or-miss for me; as much as I LOVED the first book in the series, Meet Me at Midnight (it was by far my most favorite book from them, honestly), Leave Before I Love You simply didn't live up to my expectations.
Look, I wasn't expecting how this story of Avery and Henry began as I had no clue they would be stranded somewhere in such a trauma-bonded way, but I was completely hooked from page one. Despite the fact that Avery wasn't my favorite character in Meet Me at Midnight due to her lack of work ethic and terrible princess complex, I was quite looking forward to her relationship with Henry, the golden retriever book boyfriend material. However, after spending 13 days together in such close proximity without any connection to the outside world, you'd think the experience would force Avery to grow more mature. But nope, she ended up getting back to her pre-trauma status of being an utterly spoiled brat who whined about designer brands and privileges she apparently had always taken for granted even under dire circumstances.
All I wanted to say was that I just couldn't tolerate Avery and Henry seriously deserved so much better!!!!! Henry was the epitome of a perfect boyfriend who took care of Avery however he could, constantly brought comfort to her, and made sure she had nothing to worry about other than her materialistic satisfaction. And what did she do in return? Nothing! Nothing aside from seducing him to take her V card in such an unideal situation. Sorry, I simply didn't like you, Avery.
Anyways, Leave Before I Love You would've been perfect if it ended at 70% and spared me the detail of yet another trope with a *surprise* that I absolutely hated, in my opinion. Since that wasn't the case, I would not recommend this book and you could thank me for saving you some time without getting to know what a spoiled princess Avery was. Trust me, your life would be easier without her presence! :D
***Thanks to the authors' team for providing me with an e-ARC.***
This is my fourth book from Max & Monroe and, as always, it did not disappoint! I absolutely adored Avery and Henry—the banter, the tension, the swoony moments… all of it had me hooked. I do recommend reading Meet Me at Midnight first to catch all the little connections, but honestly, you could jump right into this one and still fall in love. Max & Monroe just know how to balance laugh-out-loud moments with heartfelt romance, and this story reminded me exactly why I keep coming back for more.
Thank you to Hambright PR, Max Monroe and NetGalley for the advanced copy!
Stranded on a deserted island… with your brother’s sexy best friend? Yes, please!
What to Expect: ❤️Brother’s Best Friend ❤️Forced Proximity ❤️Dual POV ❤️Rom-Com ❤️Stranded Island ❤️All the Spice!
We met Avery in Meet Me at Midnight, and truthfully, I wasn’t a fan of her character. She came across as a carefree, rich party girl who didn’t take the world seriously, but there was a lot we didn’t see in the last book. Her transformation is one of the most satisfying parts of this story. She grows in such an authentic way, all while keeping her sass and spark, and her chemistry with Henry? Off the charts smoking hot!
This story was everything… witty banter, sizzling chemistry, and heartfelt growth. Avery and Henry’s story is the perfect mix of fun, tension, and swoon-worthy romance. I couldn't put it down! If you love the brother’s best friend trope with a fresh twist, forced proximity, and characters who steal your heart, add this to your TBR ASAP. 💕🔥🌴
4.5 stars rounded up!
Audio review: M.K. Blackwood and Will Damron were an absolute dream team for a narration duo! I'm seriously adding them to my "must-listen" list. Blackwood nailed Avery's personality to a T! All that sass, stubbornness, and inner softness just came through her voice so perfectly. And Will Damron? He made Henry's emotions feel so real. I'd definitely recommend this audiobook!
Thank you to Libro.FM, Max Monroe, and Dreamscape Media for the #gifted ALC. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I was so excited when I got approved for the new Max Monroe ARC, I had to move it to the top of my list, and i’m so glad I did. I loved it! We first met high maintenance Avery in Meet Me at Midnight, her brother Beau and her BFF Junes book. She was kind of snotty and posh, with funny scenes of her at work, so I was glad we could get to know her on a deeper level than her money, designer clothes and “Starbys.” I’m from the Valley Girl generation so this shortening of words/names is new to me. She did that a lot, but she grew on me so much when she’s stripped bare in a situation where her and MMC, Henry need to rely on each other for everything. She was funny and caring of others, a side she hides in her vapid party girl reputation. Henry was a man sized Boy Scout and it was so attractive, especially in the situation they find themselves in. And I dug that plot line, haven’t read that in a long while. Enjoyed their forced proximity and how author could write them falling in love while the world outside is unknown.. So romantic, but I always did have a crush on McGyver. There are just the right amount of flashbacks to lay their foundation without getting lost in them. Their crush as teens and into their 20’s was fun to read and just quick chapters. The scenes with bff June were hilarious. June is pregnant and very hormonal and those scenes very laughable.
Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read another Max Monroe, I’ve left this recommendation willingly.
Leave Before I Love You was so flipping fun, and I had a blast reading it! It was an entertaining, low-drama story full of good times, a bit of adventure, and plenty of chemistry. The predicament Avery and Henry found themselves in had me hooked from the start. There’s a great mix of sweet moments, heated ones, and just the right amount of emotion.
Avery had a big personality. She was spoiled and entitled on the surface, but underneath, she’s got a huge heart. I really enjoyed watching her grow. Henry, her brother’s best friend, was such a sweetheart. Strong and capable, I loved how he took care of her when chaos hit. Even more, I loved how Avery stepped up and held her own in the middle of their crazy situation. I loved learning about their history and enjoyed the flashbacks, sharing just how deep their feelings really ran. I loved how they relied on each other, let their guards down, and really opened up. I also loved the building heat between them and when the sparks started to fly, there was a nice amount of spice involved for sure. When real life comes around, making things seem complicated, I loved how they came back together and made it work. Plus, there is a curveball along the way that made for a nice surprise, and I liked what it added to the story.
I really liked the characters involved. It was fun to see Beau and June again, even though she was a bit over the top. I loved Avery’s unexpected friend group. I thought they were a wonderful addition.
Overall, I thought this was a cute, lighthearted, and charming read. With likeable characters, a great pace, and really good details, I found myself smiling, laughing, and feeling the emotion right along with Henry and Avery. It had the perfect mix of sweet, flirty, and entertaining!
I absolutely adored Avery and Henry’s story. I had no idea what these two would have to go through but in the end, their experience changed everything.
Avery and Henry come from different worlds even though they have been in each other’s lives since they were young. Henry is Avery’s brother, Beau’s best friend. He is an adrenaline junkie who has worked hard to make a name for himself. Avery is into fashion, spending money, goes through guys like it’s her job, and doesn’t really work even though her real job is working for her father. These two seem like oil and water but when they are thrown into a serious situation, they end up being just what the other needed.
Avery and Henry are awesome together. I love that she shows him a side he’s never seen and he realizes that she is so much more than she shows the world. She is fun, silly, and a hot mess at times, but she is kind and has a huge heart. I love her relationship with her best friend June and her friends from The Pines.
Henry is my new book boyfriend. The way he takes care of Avery and supports her dreams is beautiful, even as she doesn’t know what her true dreams are. I love that he is there for her, and doesn’t let any drama get in the way of them being together. I love that they are good in and out of the bed room. They know how to turn up the heat but also to bring on the sweet and swoony moments.
I love that this story took turns I didn’t see coming. I was hooked on the very first chapter and was shocked with where the story landed Avery and Henry. And then I loved that they were able to truly get to know each other on a. Deeper level, letting them into their hearts, especially when neither had been in love.
I love how the story is a fantastic mix of hilarious moments and serious ones. I enjoyed all the interactions between them and their friends and family and had a smile on my face the entire time. I loved seeing June and Beau again. They always make me happy. And my heart swooned the more time they spent together as I saw their love story unfold. And the epilogue was icing on the cake!
I really enjoyed this book. In the last book when you meet Avery you get the impression that she is a spoiled rich girl. She is, but she has many layers and we get into layers in this book. I love it!
The entire group is supposed to go on a vacation to the Caribbean, but then everyone backs out except Henry and Avery. Henry is Avery’s brother’s best friend. They do not want to waste the money they already spent so they decide to go. Unfortunately plans change. I don’t want to spoil the story, I did not expect this story going in this direction.
Avery and Henry are forced into a situation that gets them both thinking about each other in a different light.
I listened to the ALC and the narrators Will Damron & M.K Blackwood did a fantastic job. Their voices showed the personalities and emotions of each of the characters. They kept the story flowing smoothly and kept my interest.
Thank you Max & Monroe, Hambright PR and Netgalley and Dreamscape Media for the gifted eARC and ALC.

This story did not start how I expected at all and I loved it! I don’t want to spoil anything. I loved that I didn’t have any spoilers. I’ll just give you my basic feelings on this unique, entertaining and swoony story. My only hint is that it is a very unique case of forced proximity, I think that made their connection stronger and I was completely invested in them.
Henry is one of Avery’s brother’s best friends. They hang out in the same circle of friends and on occasion have kissed. There’s obviously some attraction they aren’t facing. When they are in an extreme forced proximity situation they see each other in a fresh light. They see each other’s hidden depths, and they like what they see. No surprise, this is a romance after all. What follows is a very unique romance. I love the way they appreciated each other and the vulnerability they showed. When it gets steamy it’s also very emotional, I loved that aspect so much. Henry doesn’t have any family anymore, he’s made a huge success out of his company, but he feels a bit lonely and unfulfilled. Avery plays up the fashionista who is all fun and no work. Yet, she does some incredible things no one knows about. She has never had a serious romantic relationship before. The two together are adorable, sweet and fun. This story gave me all the butterflies and excitement of first love. They are fantastic together, of course there are some emotional speed bumps they hit. The secondary characters are awesome, many I know from the author duo’s book-𝙼𝙴𝙴𝚃 𝙼𝙴 𝙰𝚃 𝙼𝙸𝙳𝙽𝙸𝙶𝙷𝚃, which is Avery’s best friend and her brother’s book. I recommend it as well. Loved it! They are standalone’s, you can read this and not be lost or overwhelmed by characters. This was such an enjoyable, engaging read. I love the characters so very much and their story is so awesome. I recommend this feel good romance, I love the whole vibe.
This narration was so fun! Will Damron & MK Blackwood were perfect for Henry & Avery!
This was a fun, adventurous, romance, with tons of banter & emotion! Forced proximity, brothers best friend, friends to lovers. This book was so much fun. Avery & Henry are forced to spend time together after an unfortunate series of events & the story did not disappoint! This was my first book by Max Monroe & I was so excited to get this ALC! I can’t wait to read more by this author!
Thank you, Hambright PR, Netgalely, and Max Monroe for this early listening opportunity!!
A prim & proper princess gets put in unfortunate events with her brothers bestfriend who is the definition of adrenaline junkie 🤭
Forced proximity causing two people who have butted heads for over a decade to work together? Chefs kiss😘🤌
I loved loved loved the banter. The complete opposite of these two was amazing. I just couldn't get over how childish Avery was. She didnt feel like she changed much until the very end to me😭
I did giggle a few times🤭 especially the audio was so funny in the banter. The spice was hawttttt and may have blushed a little too🙂↕️
I did really like how the first half of the book went. I loved seeing them work together. It kinda fell off to me a little until the ending which was adorable !
What I couldn't get over, even if in these unfortunate events... Spoiler(?) • • • Was the cheating. Both characters were in relationships before the event happened. Both knew what they did was wrong but still continued. They were in dire situations but to me they didnt seem like they cared enough for their relationships before..

I loved this story so much! In Meet Me At Midnight you get to see Avery as this sassy friend but in this story you watch her grow! The humor, the tension, the spice, the brother’s best friend, the bantering. It was the perfect combination for a perfect story. And Henry 🥵 The epilogues were 🧑🍳💋 Please read this!
Thank you, Hambright, Max Monroe, and NetGalley for the ARC and signed copy! I will treasure this!
OutFUCKINGstanding performance!! Where have M.K. Blackwood & Will Damron been all my life?! They took an already really great story and made it explode skittles and glitter and the party in my ears could have gone on for many more hours and I would not have minded one bit!
Thank you Dreamscape Media & NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to this ALC!!
Leave Before I Love You is a romantic comedy with an adventure survival twist! It’s the second installment in the Midnight Series, but it can be read as a standalone romance. If you've read the first book in the series, characters Beau and June make satisfying appearances. The story features some popular romance tropes, including “brother’s best friend,” “forced proximity,” and “slow-burn to heated romance!”
The story follows Avery Bank, a privileged party girl who has been quietly crushing on Henry Callahan, her brother’s best friend, for years. When a plane ride to a short getaway goes terribly wrong, they’re forced to parachute onto a deserted island. With no escape in sight, their simmering attraction evolves under high-stakes survival.
The story is told from the alternating first-person POVs of protagonists Avery and Henry—and readers get to clearly see how opposite these characters are. Avery’s POV is high energy, sarcastic, and filled with over-the-top inner monologues—and readers will eventually see past her “rich party girl” facade as she speaks to readers of her fears of being judged and longing for connection. Henry’s POV is much more grounded, thoughtful, and dry-humored. He quickly reveals the depth of his long-held feelings for Avery—and his internal struggle with loyalty to her brother, and his tendency to overanalyze make him very likable! Seeing both sides of their banter makes their relationship layered and believable!
Speaking of banter, there's so much of it throughout that it will keep a smile constantly plastered on readers' faces! Avery is very emotionally reactive—her privileged, party-girl persona sometimes shines through in her dialogue, and she can be insufferable at times. But after a few days on the island, when the dire reality of their situation sets in, her attitude improves. On the contrary, Henry is A+ book boyfriend material from the onset. On the island he acts as Avery's protector—and when their relationship becomes intimate, he’s the perfect gentleman, making sure she’s comfortable and her needs are being taken care of every step of the way. He’s almost a “too good to be true” male lead—and some readers may argue too good for Avery!
The island is lushly depicted, and the scenes there—whether it be fishing, foraging for food, or swimming in water—are very immersive, and readers will feel like they’re right there with Henry and Avery! The writing is fresh, snappy, and very readable! While the majority of the story takes place in the present, there are several flashbacks that show the history of attraction between Henry and Avery—from flirtatious conversations in their youth to a shared kiss just a few years earlier that was brushed under the rug. Their chemistry is palpable in every scene together—spending so much time together on the island and relying on each other for survival forces them not only to confront their feelings for each other but also to open themselves up emotionally. For those who love authentic, meaningful dialogue that's a segway to heated scenes—this book is especially for you!
Overall, Leave Before I Love You is a standout swoony rom-com, as it thrills (at least in the first half) as much as it tugs at your heartstrings. Fans of Max Monroe’s previous books or those who love forced proximity romances, survival stories, and slow-burn to steamy love stories will devour this book!
My Review: Leave Before I Love You by Max Monroe is a 2025 romantic fiction novel. It is scheduled for release on 9/12/25.
About the Book: “She’s the rich party girl; he’s her brother’s wild, adrenaline junkie best friend.
…when she finally gives in to her attraction to Henry, what was meant to be a fling might just turn into something more.”
In My Own Words: Henry and Avery have secretly been on a slow burn hum status for a while. When an unexpected life altering event occurs, they finally allow the burn to turn into a blaze.
About the Characters: The family and friends were a colorful group. They were funny and entertaining all in one. They had rich people problems, for sure. In terms of Avery and Henry, I liked them as individuals and I liked them together as a couple.
Avery - > Unique, savvy, flirtatious, loyal, spontaneous, guarded, hesitant, kindhearted/good, hides in plain sight…except in front of Henry
Henry - > Adventurous, protective, honorable, sexy, decent/good, brave, encouraging, allows himself to be vulnerable in front of Avery
I loved how Avery and Henry allowed themselves to be free with their feelings.
About the Conflict: The initial conflict that led to the stranded status was so original. I loved it! The references to Wilson and Helen Hunt made me smile. It was a great nod.
Fighting the emotions and the obvious stress and anxiety that went along with the situation the leads found themselves in was written so well. The tension pulled and in doing so, it had me.
The conflict that the featured couple faced upon their return home proved to be layered. The press, the family, the BFF who was all in her own feelings, the partners that came for them - it all added texture to the story.
About the Audiobook: This novel was narrated by Will Damron and M.K. Blackwood. The duo did an amazing job in bringing this story to life. The entire listening experience had me completely hooked.
My Final Say: I genuinely liked this story. It was all about adventure, all about family, all about love, and all about forever.
Other: Readers who enjoy “brother's best friend," "best friend's little sister,” age gap romances will like this book.
Sincere appreciation is extended to the authors, to the publishers (Max Monroe, Dreamscape Media), and to NetGalley. Thank you for granting access to a digital ARC and to an ALC of this title in exchange for an honest critique. The immersive reading/listening experience was so worth it. I thoroughly enjoyed the novel. It’s a wonderful story. I hope there will be more to come from this group of people.
Max Monroe delivers another feel-good read with Leave Before I Love You—a slow-burn, forced-proximity romance packed with heat, humor, and heart. Their classic brand of witty banter and emotional tension paired with an unexpected survival scenario made this feel very unique and engaging- and a great addition to the Midnight world.
The setup is chaotic and shocking in the best way. What was meant to be a fun group vacation turns into a two-person adventure after everyone else bails, leaving Avery Banks and Henry Callahan all alone. Yes please.
The chaos escalates when their skydiving pilot suffers a fatal stroke mid-flight, forcing Avery and Henry to parachute into quite the predicament. Avery, the rich, high-maintenance party girl with a not-so-secret crush on her brother’s best friend now suddenly finds herself stranded on a remote island with that very man. With no one but each other to rely on, they spend two intense weeks foraging, surviving, and slowly letting their walls down. OH NO- forced proximity?! A bit of opposites collide clash?! That delicious forbidden brother's best friend tension?! Slow-burning heat and the gentle unfolding of vulnerability and a situation that just OOZES trust and emotional reliance? Oh yes. Fun indeed.
Their chemistry is great, and the stakes of their life and death beginning really escalates it beautifully to something more raw, intense, and real. Fortunately, if you aren't a huge survivalist fan (like me), the narrative doesn't linger here long. The island really is the catalyst the broader story, which really starts to dig deeper after their rescue. It's like if Blue Lagoon really focused on a post-island HEA- namely can these two work when they aren't in a survive only by leaning on each other dyanmic?
Avery isn't the kind of heroine I'm usually attracted to. She's spoiled and just OOOOZES privilege. But overtime, as we get a more substantive look at her as a character, I grew to like her. And I did love the great dynamic of someone like her being stuck on an island without all her usual comforts and luxury. And her contrast with Henry is great. He's more grounded and level- and honestly seeing Avery through his eyes is what made her grow on me. He brings out the best in her.
The tropes here are lovable and the premise is unique. Forced proximity, friends-to-lovers, brother’s best friend, survival romance, opposites attract dynamic. Like all Max Monroe stories it's a great balance of heart and heat, with plenty of charming and swoony moments as well as hilarious ones. Another great heartfelt and humorous rom-com from the queens of emotive comedy.
The audio was a solid listen. I loved MK Blackwood as Avery- she brought a lot of substance and nuance to the character. And I enjoyed Will Damron as Henry as well, even though he wasn't quite how I imagined page-Henry from my immersive read.
What to expect -Forced Proximity -Friends-to-lovers -Brother’s best friend -Long time crush/longing -Stranded on an island -Banter -Slowburning spice
Max Monroe is usually hit-or-miss for me—either I love it or it completely falls flat. This one leans closer to a hit, but it never quite wowed me.
The biggest issue? Avery. She drove me bananas and I couldn’t bring myself to root for her. When your FMC is more irritating than endearing, it’s hard to fully buy into the romance. Luckily, the relationship itself still worked. It had its swoony moments and enough heart to keep me engaged. It’s definitely a comfort read: trope-heavy, not entirely realistic, but easy to sink into when you just want a fun, fast escape. The dual timeline and dual narration added a nice layer of interest, too.
As for the audiobook, it was solid but not game-changing. M.K. Blackwood really nailed Avery, giving her a voice that fit and felt authentic. Will Damron read Henry well too, but his tone just didn’t match the character’s age or vibe, which made him harder to connect with.
In the end, I think I might have preferred this one as an eARC, but the story itself has plenty of appeal. If you’re looking for a quick, heartfelt romance with a bit of comedy, some classic tropes, and a hopeful take on “forbidden” love, this is worth picking up.
I was fortunate to receive a complimentary ALC from RN Media via NetGalley, which gave me the opportunity to share my voluntary thoughts.
