The Nosey Parker Mysteries #9

The Cornish Christmas Pantomime Murder

Rate this book
It’s Christmas in Penstowan, and local amateur dramatics group the Penstowan Players are putting on their annual pantomime.

This year it’s ‘Aladdin’, and half the town have been drafted in to help, including Shirley Parker, who only has a small part in the chorus but will no doubt upstage everybody, and Tony Penhaligon, who’s treading the boards as the baddie, Abanazar. Ex-Metropolitan police officer turned caterer Jodie Parker has managed to get away with not appearing, but only if she agrees to cater the opening night party.

But it’s not just terrible jokes, quick costume changes and backstage chaos that wait in the wings… When the Widow Twankey (otherwise known as Tim, the mayor’s husband) trips over a corpse lying next to Aladdin’s bloodstained magic lamp, it’s time for Jodie and her partner, DCI Nathan Withers, to find the killer.

Was it the genie of the lamp or an overly harsh theatre critic? Or does someone in the Penstowan Players have a dark secret they will do anything to protect?

It’s nearly Christmas in Penstowan, Cornwall, England and time for the pantomime theatrical performance full of music, comedy, and jokes. The Cornish Christmas Pantomime Murder by Fiona Leitch is full of murder, entertainment, and a police investigation, along with some sleuthing in the ninth and latest book in the Jodie ‘Nosey’ Parker series. Besides Jodie, it features her husband Detective Chief Inspector Nathan Withers along with several returning characters including Jodie’s daughter Daisy as well as her mom Shirley.

Both Shirley and Daisy are helping with the pantomime and Jodie is catering after the open night performance for the cast and crew. Jodie’s oldest friend, Tony Penhaligon plays the villain in the show. Amongst the terrible jokes, quick costume changes, and backstage chaos, a corpse is found lying next to a bloodstained lamp. Who was killed and why?

Jodie left the London metropolitan police force and moved back to her home town. Despite taking on a new career of catering, that hasn’t stopped her unofficial investigations and occasional consulting with the local police. Her sense of humor and warmth continues to shine in this story. She is a likeable and friendly character who is good at listening to others. Nathan has a great sense of humor and has a pragmatic approach to life. He’s well respected by his colleagues. Their chemistry creates a fun dynamic. The secondary characters continue to develop and Germaine, Jodie’s Pomeranian, shows up throughout the story.

Overall, this is an entertaining story with great characterization that quickly drew me into Jodie’s world. The author did a great job of enabling this reader to visualize the scenes; making it feel like I was in Penstowan helping to solve the case. As usual, Jodie picks up clues through gossip, luck, and asking the right questions that lead to an array of suspects. It was a fun, appealing, and delightful read with a solid mystery to unravel and humor sprinkled throughout. A couple of things that stood out for me were the long memories in small towns and Jodie’s struggle with having a purpose in life. Where will that lead in the future? Themes include friendship, family, small town dynamics, murder, secrets, gossip, and much more. Relationships continue to play a major role in this series. A recipe is included at the end of the book and food is mentioned throughout the novel.
I recommend the novel to those that enjoy the genre. It was a fun and relaxing read and I can’t wait for the next book featuring Jodie and her family and friends. For more enjoyment, the books are best read in order, but this can be read as a standalone.

HarperCollins UK – One More Chapter and Fiona Leitch provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date is currently set for October 31, 2025. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.

This is the ninth book in The Nosey Parker Mysteries series. Jodie (Nosey) Parker and D.C.I. Nathan Withers were married in the previous book although Jodie has kept her rather entertaining maiden name.

It is Christmas in Penstowan, Cornwall, and the local drama club is putting on a version of Aladdin for the Christmas pantomime. Just about all the town is there to watch the show when a body is found back stage when the performance is only part way through. Nathan finds himself in charge of a murder case and of course Jodie provides some help from the sidelines.

This is a well written mystery with lots of red herrings. Nathan is lucky to have Jodie and the local gossip mongers on the case as the obvious suspects fall by the wayside one by one. I did guess who the murderer was but had to wait for Jodie to explain why they did it. A good little mystery to read at Christmas time.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

The Cornish Christmas Pantomime Murder is the ninth book in The Nosey Parker Mysteries series It could be read as a standalone, but I suggest you to read the previous books because it's really a pleasure to meet Jodie and her family at the beginning and to follow their journey.

It's the opening night for the Pantomime at the Penstowan theater. Everything was going smoothly until, not long after the interval, a dead body was found backstage. With a theater packed with actors and spectators, Jodie and the police investigations won't be easy. Will Jodie and Nathan get the murderer before Christmas in order to celebrate their first holiday together as a married couple?

Nathan and Jodie have found their new routine as a married couple, and their house bantering is so funny. I've always appreciated their chemistry, affinity and mutual understanding. They still work amazingly together, even if in an unofficial capacity. Jodie has good instinct and Nathan trust her insights a lot, but in this case I think he relied a bit too much on her.

Fiona Leitch wrote a new engaging and entertaining cozy mystery. I loved the Christmas atmosphere, the amateur play, and Jodie and her family dynamics.

I've enjoyed this reading.I already can't wait for next book.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for kindly giving me an advanced copy of this book to read.

I love the Nosey Parker series by Fiona Leitch and was eager to dive back into the lives of the Penstowan locals, especially our favourite non-police character, Jodie Parker! This time, the story revolves around the local pantomime, where everyone is excited either to have a role within the production, on stage or off, or to be part of the audience. However, a gruesome murder is discovered partway through the first performance. As usual, the police are involved, led by DCI Nathan Withers, aka husband of ex-Met police officer Jodie Parker, who always manages to find clues to support her husband and the local constabulary when solving cases. Along the way, Jodie is feeling the effects of a woman of a certain age, and that was something I could definitely relate to, if not the crime solving! Another highly entertaining cosy murder mystery to add to a fantastic series! Many thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter, for an ARC.

A fun read for this time of year, nice to be set where I live and a good storyline. The writing style annoyed me so much though, very childlike and silly

It's panto season in the Cornish town of Penstowan, and excitement is building. Caterer Jodie Parker has managed to avoid performing but is surrounded by sausage rolls and nibbles as she prepares the first night party food. Surprised at how good everyone is, Jodie and new husband, DCI Nathan Withers, are in the audience when disaster strikes, the body of one of the Penstowan Players is discovered backstage, and the laughter stops as a murder investigation begins. With no obvious clues or suspects, Jodie and Nathan have to unwillingly consider their friends could be involved; it's clear the run up to Christmas just got very tricky. As the festivities get ever closer, can either of them discover the truth before goodwill to all disappears, and they're on no one's Christmas card list?

I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter, but the opinions expressed are my own. I love this series. It's one that can regularly have me laughing aloud and enjoying every word. Married to a proud Cornish man and been involved in panto productions when my children were small, this was an absolute joy to read, and I was sorry when it ended. I read it in a day, and it is absolutely highly recommended.

It is nearly Christmas in Pentowan, Cornwall and Jodie “Nosey Parker” and her family are enjoying the run up to the festive season. Husband (and local DCI) Matt has accompanied the family and many other locals to watch the am-dram pantomime. As is usual with Jodie, murder is on the agenda and soon she and Matt find themselves sleuthing, with Jodie using her unique skills.

This cozy crime series is a great find and having read the previous books in the series I would definitely recommend reading them all in sequence. Not only are they well written and engaging but the characters have developed and enjoying this book was like returning to old friends. Along with the mystery and suspense there is a great deal of humour and many loveable characters. Jodie is a great role model for her daughter and as a character likeable but still flawed, making her seem more realistic than the traditional female sleuth.

I am eagerly awaiting the next book where I suspect there may be an unexpected New Year gift for our beloved protagonist!

I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was interesting to read something about plays and actors, I don't remember the last time I read a novel which included that in the storyline.

The story flows really nicely. I enjoyed the connection between characters, mostly between mother, daughter and grandmother. The author gives these characters dept, e.g., when mentioning relationships, sex, contraception, menopause, etc. I think it's amazing to educate people in such a way and to also "lighten up" the book (aka giving it a break from the main action).

Jodie is a pretty lovable character, I could really relate to her. Alongside Nathan, they make the best couple (both when it comes to personal life, as well as in solving murders haha).

Overall, it's a solid four-star read. I don't think the ending is that extraordinary, but it's a great cozy mystery that kept me wanting to know more and more!

This slick seasonal mystery is replete with entertaining details of behind the scenes at a Cornish amateur dramatic company's pantomime. For those who are not familiar with this very British art-form, the author provides a handy explanation.

With the murder taking place mid-performance, the vast range of suspects includes the entire cast, crew, and audience. Former detective Jodie 'Nosey' Parker has her work cut in finding the killer, with a little help from the rest of her multi-generational household - elderly mother Shirley, fast-maturing teenage daughter Daisy, and kindly new husband DCI Nathan Withers - and members of the local community. The closeness of Jodie's Cornish village community adds to the story's charm.

This festive mystery comes with a generous side order of sweet romance, not just for Jodie and Nathan, still in honeymoon mood, but also Daisy, navigating her first serious relationship, and Jodie's wily mother Shirley.

My only worry was that ex-copper Jodie's new catering business has no bookings for December or January! But it turns out that's just as well, giving her time to get stuck into solving the mystery, while also preparing for the perfect family Christmas.

Whether or not you're a fan of panto, this is a fun read to curl up with by the fireside this Christmas. The ninth in the series, ir also reads well as a standalone.

Needed a cozy Christmas mystery for the flight home and this was perfect (although the victim was young and did not deserve her death). It is 9th in a series, so I learned background on the fly, but it takes place in or near Cornwall. Very small town, everyone knows everyone else, Jodie our amateur sleuth was a former police officer and is now married to the current police chief. The murder occurs during a production of the annual holiday play which is a variation of Aladdin. Interesting enough, I kept turning the pages and my flight was over before I knew it!

"The Cornish Christmas Pantomime Murder ” the 9th instalment in The Nosey Parker Cozy Mystery series by Fiona Leitch. I cannot get enough of this series, if you love mysteries set in England this is for you! It’s Christmas in Penstowan, and local amateur dramatics group the Penstowan Players are putting on their annual pantomime.

I love visiting Cornwall and Jodie, DCI Nathan Withers, Daisy, and her mum but let’s not forget about Germaine the Pomeranian! This go around we are attending the Christmas Pantomime where Jodie’s mum Shirley and daughter Daisy are front and centre of all the action and this time a little to close for comfort.

The mystery was really interesting, well plotted, and had just enough twists to keep you engrossed and wanting to know what happens next. I really hope there will be a book 10 coming out soon, as I can’t get enough of this series.

I recommend this book to all my cozy lover friends.

Fiona Leitch’s The Cornish Christmas Pantomime Murder is the next sparkling addition to the Nosey Parker series, combining festive cheer with another clever mystery to solve. Set in a charming Cornish village, ex-Metropolitan police officer turned caterer Jodie Parker navigates backstage drama, pantomime chaos, and a murder most unexpected.
As always there is witty dialogue and lovable characters, I’m always a fan of the hilariously over-the-top Shirley Parker. The festive setting adds warmth and whimsy, especially with the pantomimes backstage antics and mishaps keeping the pace lively.
Jodie’s sleuthing skills are sharp and engaging, making her a protagonist you’ll root for time and time again.
This ninth instalment in the series is perfect for fans of Richard Osman and the cosy crime genre. It’s a cosy, clever mystery wrapped in tinsel and topped with a generous helping of humour. Always looking forward to the next visit to Jodie and the gang.

I dove into The Cornish Christmas Pantomime Murder like a feral elf in a trifle bowl because (1) I’m a weak-willed sucker for a Christmas mystery, and (2) I saw the word “pantomime” and blacked out from pure British chaos anticipation. Did I start with book nine of a cozy series I’ve never read before? Absolutely. Did I understand half the recurring character dynamics? Not even a little. But did I power through on mince pies and murder vibes alone? OH YES I DID.

We’re in Penstowan, a small Cornish town where apparently everyone is in a pantomime production of Aladdin, which is only loosely related to Christmas in the way that Die Hard is. Jodie Parker, our main girl, is a former cop turned caterer who has somehow avoided being roped into the stage nonsense by bribing the universe with sausage rolls. Her teenage daughter Daisy, her chaos goblin of a mum Shirley, and half the townsfolk are all in costume. There are genie lamps. There are glittery villains. There is someone named Widow Twankey. And just when everyone’s getting into the “it’s behind you!” spirit… boom. Body backstage. Covered in fake snow and regrets.

Honestly, the vibes were 10/10 for festive murder energy. The mystery? Somewhere around a solid 7.5. There's a legit corpse next to a prop magic lamp and a killer running around in costume like a Shakespearean Scooby-Doo episode, but the pacing drags just a touch between dramatic flourishes. It’s got red herrings, weird alibis, local gossip, and one very chaotic community theatre group that might never emotionally recover.

Jodie, for her part, is half charming, half chaos engine. She is absolutely the kind of woman who says, “I’m just helping,” while actively committing minor B&E. Her husband Nathan is the local DCI and the most patient man alive. He investigates real crime while she barges into dressing rooms with mince pies and theories. Do I understand their dynamic fully after skipping the first eight books? No. Did I feel like I was third-wheeling their murder date night? Absolutely.

The book thrives when it leans into its cast of theatrical weirdos. The suspects are all delightful nightmares, dramatic and sniping, and one tambourine shake away from a meltdown. Shirley absolutely steals the show by being the kind of mother who accidentally solves half the mystery while wearing sequins and insulting someone’s gravy.

But let’s talk holiday vibes. Chef’s kiss. The whole thing feels like a boozy Christmas pudding lit on fire... warm, slightly unhinged, and possibly hiding something deadly inside. There are carol services, festive feasts, murder clues hidden in costumes, and just enough cozy description to make you wish your own Christmas involved slightly more glitter and significantly fewer corpses.

Now, because I have to nitpick (it’s the rules), there’s a stretch in the middle where things slow down just enough to make you check if you accidentally skipped a chapter. The actual reveal of the murderer isn’t wildly shocking. If you’ve watched any episode of Midsomer Murders in your life, you’ll probably clock it. But what the plot lacks in gasp-worthy twists, it makes up for in big-hearted mess, theatrical antics, and genuinely funny one-liners.

If you’re already invested in the Nosey Parker universe, this feels like popping back into town for the holidays and catching up over tea and trauma. If you’re new (like me), it’s like arriving at a chaotic family Christmas party where everyone knows each other, and you’re just here for the murder and mini quiches.

It’s cozy. It’s chaotic. It’s a little predictable. But also, it’s Christmas, and I’m not mad about any of that. 3.5 glitter-covered, turkey-scented stars.

Massive thanks to HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter, and NetGalley for the ARC of The Cornish Christmas Pantomime Murder, and for enabling my deeply unserious addiction to festive murder.

It's mid-December and the local Penstowan am-dram society are putting on a production of Aladdin as their Christmas pantomime. Half the village are involved and the other half are in the audience on opening night - it's all going swimmingly until a body is discovered and the theatre immediately becomes a room full of suspects. Jodie Parker is married to one of the local police officers and used to be one herself, and in no time gets pulled into the investigation. Can they find who killed the cast member?

I really enjoyed this book, it's an ideal example of how good a cozy murder mystery can be. The writing was funny, conversational, and unmistakably British throughout. The plot was very well thought out and detailed without being hectic and hard to keep track of. There were genuinely good reasons for everything which happened - it's a major frustration of mine when an author throws in a random event for with no benefit to the story and there was none of that here. The pacing was good, the characters were relatable, and the descriptions of the village were great for making me feel like I was there as a reader. Despite this being the latest in a well established series, I didn't feel at all like I was missing out through not having read the previous books - though I definitely want to now!

I did have a couple of very minor frustrations which prevented this from being a five star read - the main one being that after great pacing through the whole book, the last few chapters felt a little rushed. Also the final confession / conclusion of the killer happened off page which was a bit disappointing. Don't let that put you off though - this is a brilliant, fun, cozy and festive read; very highly recommended.

It is Christmas time in Penstowan and that means time for the community pantomime, aka Panto. Almost everyone in Jodie Parker's family is involved with the Panto somehow. She might only be doing the catering, but Daisy and her mum are part of the cast and crew, so it's all hands on deck for opening night. Just as the second act begins, a body is discovered backstage, so DCI Nathan Withers, Jodie's new husband is immediately in investigator mode, with Jodie as his informal consultant. Everyone in the cast and crew along with most of the audience are suspects and it is the week before Christmas! As the police investigate the crime, with Jodie's help, like it or not, they narrow the suspect list, but they also find themselves looking at a 40 year old cold case that might be related to this murder. Can they solve these cases before it's time for Christmas dinner. read on to find out!
Twisty plot with lots of possible suspects, even as the list is narrowed and while I did suspect the villains, it wasn't until late in the book and it was truly fun to see how it all played out.
I loved so many things about this book. First and foremost, the characters dish out just enough snark to keep me laughing and I found myself thinking of members of my own family as I read about Jodie and her family and friends. so much alike in so many ways! Penstowan calls out for a visit, preferably when the weather is a bit warmer, perhaps during beach season instead of Christmas, although I'd hate to miss the Panto!
My thanks to NetGalley and Kensington for the opportunity to read an early copy of this book in exchange for my honest thoughts.

The Cornish Christmas Pantomime Murder by Fiona Leitch takes us back to Cornwall and Jodie and her quirky family. After they were married, she and Nathan built an apartment for her mother adjacent to the house, although some days she spent more time in Jodie’s house than her own. Her mum and Daisy, her daughter, were performing in the Christmas pantomime and beyond excited. Jodie was providing refreshments. All was going well until Daisy discovered a body in a closet backstage. Then, Nathan took over and it looked to be a gloomy Christmas. Daisy was handling it better than the adults. But, who could have done it? Most of the cast were busy at the time and an audience member backstage would have been noticed.

Jodie is a good character. She had returned home to Cornwall after retiring from the London police department. She took her responsibility as a single parent keenly and realized the constant worry for Daisy was not the thing. So, after twenty years, she retired. She was now a caterer, albeit, one without much business at the moment. I always like this series because of the quirkiness of the residents. Nathan has become a solid part of the story and Daisy is probably up and away soon. Leitch is cleverly and sympathetically addressing a woman’s change of life and it is a refreshing change. Murder is always so sad, but some good came out of it, coincidentally. All is once more well in their tiny home.

This was a real delight to read.

First and foremost this is a *very* British book. Not only is it set around a pantomime, an incredibly British form of entertainment, but the humour is very British throughout. As I'm British, I enjoyed that a lot, but it might be a little bit of a shock to some American readers.

It was a lot of fun. The characters were engaging, well thought out and three dimensional. There was stuff happening outside of the main murder mystery plot, but none of it felt like mindless filler, there was a really good subplot about mothers and daughters talking which was great. The mystery itself was well done, there were red herrings and different strands to explore. The motives all felt real as well, actual reasons for killing someone.

Our MFC is fun, she knows she's nosy, but she's good at solving crime, at finding a place after retiring from her job. I hadn't read any of the previous books in the series but I didn't feel as if I was missing something - aside from a desire to read the rest of them!

The last few chapters were... good, but they didn't match the height of everything that had come before. There was a little too much logic leaping, a little too many coincidences and things being wrapped up in overly neat bows. It is a shame because everything up to that really hit the nail on the head. Still a really fun tale and the best cosy murder mystery I've read in a while.

This was another entertaining mystery from Fiona Leitch for DCI Nathan Withers and his wife Jodie to solve.
The first night of the local pantomime was going really well until just after the interval when the body of the actor playing Aladin was discovered backstage. It quickly becomes clear that the murder was probably committed by a fellow member of the theatre company and as this includes Jodie’s daughter Daisy and her mother, the case begins to feel very personal to both her and Nathan.
I really enjoyed this mystery and as usual there were plenty of twists and turns as suspects were introduced and alibis inspected. One thing that I love about this series is that all of the characters have some depth to them with motivations that make sense. The case kept me engaged throughout the novel as although I was correct in my identification of the murderer, I had no idea about the motive.
Nathan and Jodie are a brilliant pairing and their relationship continues to deepen now they are married. The family banter that demonstrates the warmth between all of them is another lovely feature of these books.
This is the 9th in the series and although it could be read as a stand alone, I would recommend that you read at least a couple of the previous books in the series to get full enjoyment of this latest instalment.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Christmas Pantomime Murder and am grateful to NetGalley and the publishers, Harper Collins UK One More Chapter for providing this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Book 9 of the Nosey Parker Cosy Murder Mystery Series.

It's Christmas in Penstowan, and local amateur dramatics group the Penstowan Players are putting on the annual pantomime. This year it's "Aladdin," and half the town has been drafted in to help. including Shirley Parker, who has only a small part in the chorus but will no doubt upstage everybody, and Tony Penhaligan, who is treading the boards as the baddie, Abanazar. Ex-Metropolitan police officer turned caterer, Jodie Parker, has managed to get away with not appearing, but only if she agrees to cater for the opening night party. But it's not just terrible jokes and quick costume changes that wait in the wings. When Widow Twankey trips over a corpse lying next to Aladdin's blood stained lamp, It's time for Jodie and her partner DCI Nathan Withers to find the killer.

When a murder takes place in Penstowan, you know Jodie Parker (Nosey) and her husband DCI Nathan Withers won't be far away. It's Christmas time in Penstowan, Cornwall. The pantomime is in full swing, until Widow Twankey trips over a dead body.

Book nine of this series ans it's still enjoyable. I love all the characters that are portrayed in this book. There were many possible suspects and twists.

This is the ninth outing for Jodie & her family & friends whilst it could easily be read on its own to fully appreciate it I’d recommend starting at book one. I’ve loved how Jodie & Nathan have grown closer & are now married plus he values her opinion, then there’s Jodie’s mum Shirley, who’s a hoot, daughter Daisy who is growing up & is a chip off the old block, best friend Tony who always puts his foot init. There’s also Nathan’s team of detectives who work well together. There are quite a few red herrings plus twists & turns until Jodie & Nathan catch the murderer, there’s also a cold case which is solved. A very well written cosy mystery, which I thoroughly enjoyed & recommend, there’s always some humour & of course food plus there’s a recipe at the end

Halfway through the first performance of Penstowan's Christmas pantomime, one of the cast is murdered. Luckily, Jodie 'Nosey' Parker and her husband, DCI Nathan Withers, are in the audience and immediately start investigating.

The Cornish Christmas Pantomime Murder is book 9 in the Nosey Parker series by Fiona Leitch. I've really enjoyed following the characters over the series of books, watching relationships develop, such as the one between Jodie and Nathan, and characters grow, particularly young Daisy.

As always, Jodie is in the thick of things. It helps that she's in the audience when the crime is committed, even if she wasn't, she'd find some way of inveigling her way into the investigation as Nathan is the local detective. With the murder taking place during the interval, the list of suspects is confined to cast and crew, but everyone seems to have an alibi. Combined with this is a complete lack of motive. A fleeting glimpse of a member of the cast initially puts the pantomime dame at the top of the suspect list; however, the process of deduction shows that it must have been someone using the costume as a disguise.

With Christmas rapidly approaching, Jodie finds her preparations for the big day taking a back seat as she becomes preoccupied with the case. Thankfully, Jodie lives up to her nickname and, through gossip and luck, manages to pick up clues that point in the direction of possible suspects, and we discover that some residents of the quaint Cornish town hide dark secrets, secrets that could be worth killing for.

There is a cast of engaging characters, some slightly larger than life as befits a cosy crime novel. The well-established characters make you feel as if you are visiting friends, and new ones add to the sense of mystery. The humor is subtle, and there are enough red herrings to keep you turning the pages. I'm always a little saddened when I reach the conclusion of one of the author's books; it feels as if you've spent an enjoyable holiday with close friends, but now have to return to normal life. Thankfully, the good news is that book 10 will be available in 2026.

As you can tell from the title, there is a murder at the Christmas pantomime, in the small coastal town of Penstowan in Cornwall. It’s being put on by the local amateur dramatics group, who’ve chosen ‘Aladdin’ for this year’s pantomime. All is going well on opening night until the start of the second half when one of the players is found dead.

Ex-detective Jodie Parker, wife of the local DCI, Nathan Withers, is at the pantomime, catering the half time food, as well as keeping an eye on her mother and daughter who are part of the cast. Jodie has a reputation for being nosey and often helps the police (officially or unofficially) with investigating crimes. So, of course she’s not going to sit back and not do any sleuthing on the side.

This is a fun Christmassy mystery with all the trimmings. It’s not at all obvious who committed the murder and the police have to dig deep, with Jodie’s help of course, to find the murderer and their motive. It’s always a pleasure to catch up with Jodie, her family and friends and this is a very entertaining episode with lots of cosy seasonal vibes.

With thanks to Harper Collins UK via Netgalley for a copy to read

I love the Nosy Parker series so much so it was lovely getting this Christmas edition! I saved it for December to make it extra festive. I realized who the murderer was on my own but it was not obvious at first, which I think is the perfect cosy mystery. Also the narrator is honestly one of the best ever. I would be heartbroken if she stopped narrating these books.

I just wanted to add two things. As an aromantic asexual, I really appreciated the acknowledgment and the accuracy of the mention! It really made me happy!

One little thing is that there are 63 recognized First Nations in Manitoba and a Manitoba Métis Federation, so the statement “the local indigenous tribe” is a nonsense statement. “The local” would only make sense if there was a town mentioned and they only had one nearby First Nation.

Obviously the author did not realize this and it a small throwaway sentence, but as a Canadian I just wanted to say one thing that I noticed in a review doubtlessly no one will look at. The sentence would have been better as “I worked with a First Nation to protect their traditional land”.

I was looking around for an audiobook to listen to when this one popped up. It caught my eye because last year I read a book called "The Pantomime Murders" by Fiona Veitch Smith (which is brilliant by the way) and the similarities in titles and author names were what drew me to this one. Turns out this is the ninth book in a series I'd never heard of, but it worked well as a standalone. So well, in fact, that it completely drew me in and I'll be checking out the whole series. The characters were funny and lovely and well rounded, and anyway, here's the plot:

It's the opening night of the local theatre production's Christmas pantomime, but shortly after the interval one of the cast members is found murdered. Who did it and why do it at a crowded theatre?

Jodie Parker, ex-police, now caterer, begins to unofficially dig into the case, while her husband, actual policeman, does the official investigation. There are lots of people who could have done it (packed theatre) but not many with a motive.

I really enjoyed the story, and the love in Jodie's family - her lovely husband, young daughter, and mother. It was just really nice to spend time with them all.

If chilling Christmas mysteries are more your speed, I have also reviewed the new 2025 picks here on Jen Ryland Reviews

A former police officer now living in a Cornish village solves crimes. In this book, one of the actors in the Christmas pantomime is dead. Who did it and why? Jodie, her mum Shirley, her daughter Daisy, and her new DCI husband Nathan are getting ready for Christmas but are drawn into this puzzling case. As an American, I am fascinated with the "panto" so I found this book so much fun!

I have not read any of this series and I kind of wish I had, as I clearly missed the Jodie-Nathan romance. But overall, a fun cozy Christmas mystery!

Thanks to Joffe Books for the advance reader copy!

Well, Jodie Parker has officially joined Jessica Fletcher, Miss Marple and Sister Boniface on my list of women to avoid at any event.

So far Jodie's been present at crimes at weddings, festivals, movie sets, and bake-offs. And now that most sacred British institution - the Christmas panto. Whilst the panto is playing in front of a packed audience...in fairness having helped out at a panto it's surprising it doesn't happen more.

For indeed Jodie and family have joined in the panto festivities with the local amateur drama group. Amateur it may be but with a former soap actor involved expectations are high. But it's fair to say no one expected one of the leads to miss their cue due to being murdered backstage. A bit much for a panto really. Jodie's on the case, naturally, and soon uncovers backstage jealousy and tension. But enough to provoke murder?

Another excellent addition to this series. Always funny, always enjoyable. And even better is the obligatory recipe. Lush.

A very cozy, cozy crime.
Thankyou to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter for the ARC.my review is given volantarily.
One of the stars of the local Christmas pantomime has been murdered, and Jodie can't resist assisting her husband, DCI Nathan Withers, in solving the case.
If you’re British and a fan of pantomimes, this book is a must-read. If you’re not British, get ready to dive into this uniquely British tradition. The book is highly relatable, packed with references to contemporary life in the UK—social, cultural, and political. It’s also rich in domestic details—plenty of them! the relationships are very realistic, particularly Jodie's with her mother and daughter.
This book is perfect for anyone seeking a cozy crime story deeply rooted in everyday contemporary life.
