Eight months have passed since Setoni’s fallen. With their ship destroyed and the seas controlled by vengeful merfolk, Kiojah, Ario and their crew remain landlocked in the city of Freon. The royal court urges patience, but the thaw of winter brings no relief—only pressure from the pirates besieging Setoni’s coast.

Kiojah refuses to stand idle while her homeland burns. She is no longer the sheltered duchess who followed her husband across the sea—she is a princess shaped by storm and sacrifice, determined to become a force of change.

But saving Setoni will require more than courage. Before she can return home, Kiojah must repair a broken alliance with the merfolk, survive the creatures haunting the open waters, and rebuild trust with a crew unraveling under the weight of war. Even Ario, her husband and once-steadfast ally, may not walk the same path she now follows.

As kingdoms clash and the seas stir with ancient power, Kiojah must decide what kind of leader she is willing to become—and what she is willing to lose to protect the future she believes in.

The first book in this series, Tide Bound, remains one of those fantastic indie gems that I wish more people had found and read. The sequel, Tide Keeper, keeps up the momentum from the first and runs with it.

Before we get into the plot and characters, I need to commend the author on how well she writes and how well edited this was. The visuals are very rich, with everything coherent and understandable. I felt invested in the characters and the story, and even when I was having issues with the characters, it wasn't a negative as the way the author wrote them meant I was meant to feel that way. The world of Setoni and Nereviss was so rich and lived in that you could feel the history and how people genuinely lived there.

The story follows on from the first book, obviously, and I won't spoil anything from that as I feel you need to read it for yourself. But we enter this book a few months later, with Kiojah and Ario in the palace of Nevaron. Both miss the sea, but are doing their duties as well as they can. Kiojah works on her bestiary with Heston, and Ario takes up his princely duties.

Throughout this book, we go through two continents and meet a variety of people. The merfolk take a bigger role here, which makes sense after book one. We get to experience more of Setoni, and Kiojah comes into her own with her knowledge of the citizens. Nox also takes a bigger role, and I loved seeing them become confident in themselves and their roles.

This leads me to the characters. I gave this 5 stars, and even my critiques don't change that. My main issue with almost all the characters was that they just didn't communicate! So many issues could have been resolved if they'd just talked. Nox is the only one who followed this, and I really appreciated how they brought some common sense into the world.

Kiojah grows in confidence throughout this and takes on more and more as she realises what she's capable of. As I said, she's still pretty terrible at communicating, and I wish she'd have just talked with Ario sometimes instead of...what they ended up doing. She was smart and made logical decisions, but then also made some really stupid ones, too.

Ario was the same, to be honest, and I didn't like how Kiojah let him get away with being an arse at times. Even Nox points this out, yet neither of them do anything to stop it until it all gets too much. I mentioned in my first book review that I loved how this wasn't instalove and how they don't even mention they love each other. But I wanted to smash their heads into each other this time, as it felt like they were either butting heads for no reason or avoiding each other. Again, I appreciate this is a more realistic approach to relationships, but sometimes I just wanted to lock them in a room and tell them to sort things out. Despite that, I still loved them together, and you could really see the love they had for each other despite all this.

Taerun...look, I hated her. The whole book, I hated her. She didn't redeem herself to me, and I actually dislike how she got a 'happy' ending after everything she'd done. I truly feel like she got so many chances, to the point that she got too many. So yeah, I spent all the book disliking her, and I still do!

The other characters...I won't mention too much, as it will spoil things, but I loved some of them and their growth and disliked others. Don't worry, the ones I disliked, you're meant to! So the author did a great job there. The plot woven together wonderfully, and I'm so impressed with it all.

Also, Grell is the best. As is Tidbit.

I really can't wait for what else this author has in store, as they have all the qualities to create some truly fantastic stories in the future (alongside this, obviously!).

Tide Keeper by Lauren O'Brien is the fierce seafaring sequel to Tidebound.Get ready for even more action, romance, underwater adventures, and betrayals with plot twists that will keep reader's guessing until the very end.

The sequel picks up right where the first book ends, and follows Kiojah's journey to unite everyone, and along the way she will have to face new enemies, and betrayals.

The fmc Kiojah is given a fierce glow up,and she is definitely no damsel in distress. Mrs.O'Brien portrayal of girl power, and never giving up on yourself or your dreams is inspiring!✨️

The mysteries, and secrets of the underwater kingdom are finally revealed. There's new characters, and also the return of familiar characters.

The plot twists just kept coming around every corner, and the betrayals had a lot of make or break moments. The ending does a perfect job of wrapping up all the events throughout the story, and gives a hint about who's story will be coming next.

Add Tide Keeper to your tbr if you love:
1.Found family
2. Strong rebel princess fmc
3.Unique magic system
4.court intrigue
5.slow burn romance
6.Pirates & mermaids
7.Character driven
8.Plot twists & amazing world building

Thank you Mrs.O'Brien for the opportunity to read Tide Keeper, and I look forward to reading even more stories from you in the future. 🌊✨️

This is the second book in the Tide Bound duology. We were introduced to Kiojah and Ario in book one. If you have not read book one I suggest you go back and read that because it sets the stage for this book.

Kiojah has come such a long way from the snotty little brat she was at the beginning of book one. Funny how life, struggle and sacrifice can change you. Laurens writing once again is so vivid and I can easily picture the lands of Setoni and Nevaron.

The characters are still as amazing as book one. I was thoroughly invested in this story. I love how the characters from book one have truly developed. I loved reading about the merfolk in this book. They played a more prominent role in this book.

We continue to see Kiojah and Ario butt heads. Both are stubborn and hard headed and neither wants to give in. While this was a perfect end to this duology, the story and characters were so great, I could easily see some spinoffs (hint hint).

I truly love this duology. Each book captivated me from the very beginning. The story line and the plot were very strong, so it held my interest. I definitely want to read more from this author. This is another four out of five star read for me.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Book 2 is the conclusion to the Tide Bound Duology. The first part of the book provides lots of background from Tide Bound making it easy to follow the events from Book 1. Tide Keeper takes place eight months after the last battle. This book is much more politically centred and follows Kiojah and her found family on a quest to save her home. There is lots of build up and things get very exciting at the halfway point. This book has lots of political intrigue and the last quarter of the book is filled with non-stop suspense. Great conclusion to the series!

Ok so if the first book is amazing (which it is), the sequel is even better!!! Tide Keeper is an amazing continuation of the story and really keeps the momentum for the first book going.

It very graciously gave me, once again that perfect balance of romance, adventure, and politics that make an incredible fantasy book, in my opinion.

The exploration of the characters in their new setting, and their development through the aftermath of the events in the previous novel is so well done. It really helped showcase the differences in each character, regardless of how similar they may seem at times.

Watching how far every character has come in their own journeys is fascinating. Getting to see Kiojah push herself to reach a higher level is beautiful, and almost everything she does exudes the strength she has rightfully built for herself. Nox still stands as my favourite character (might be biased cuz I’m crushing), they are so amazing in this book, and watching them find themselves in a whole new way was probably my favourite portion. I loved seeing a bit more of Heston too!

We are also blessed with an array of new characters who are equally as enjoyable and lovable as the original cast.

This story has an excellent main political plot, that was deeply enthralling to watch as it unfolded. I was on my toes at every page waiting to see what would transpire next, and that’s exactly how I like it lol. It also left room to take a deeper dive into the magic and fantasy of the world, which was so satisfying. It was honestly also quite fitting that we got to learn more, considering the project that Heston and Kiojah collaborate on in this book, them wanting to educate people on the realities of the merfolk and other sea creatures. To have their mission be presented to the readers as well feels like we get to see their success for ourselves, and feel it along with every character in that book.

Once again, a real page turner from start to finish, I loved this book. I adore the characters, and even when they made me mad (an intentional effort made by the author, I’m sure) I thoroughly enjoyed their storylines. I loved the entire plot, it was so well thought out and well executed. I loved the world building, which again was incredibly thought out and so well executed.

This beautiful found family, romantic, fantasy, sea faring adventure, is a read that I would recommend to anyone who wants to enjoy their time. It has something for everybody, trust, and even when you think that there might be an aspect that isn’t your cup of tea, you’re wrong, because it’s all so incredible. READ THIS BOOK

If you're drawn to stories where politics, relationship drama, and mesmerizing merfolk take center stage, then Tides Keeper is an absolute must-read. This seafaring YA fantasy, the sequel to Tide Bound, masterfully weaves a tale of war, magic, and tangled alliances beneath the waves and across treacherous shores.

At the heart of the story is a richly layered political landscape—power struggles between kingdoms, secret treaties, and the looming threat of war. The intricate political machinations keep the pages turning, immersing readers in a world where diplomacy is as dangerous as combat. The novel deftly explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the cost of leadership, making each political twist feel impactful and compelling.

The relationship drama is equally captivating. The protagonist Kiojah's journey is intertwined with her arranged marriage with Ario, which sparks a tumult of emotions—love, duty, rebellion, and longing. The emotional depth of this relationship, especially their struggles, adds a poignant layer to the story, making their struggles and growth resonate deeply. The romantic tension is palpable, balanced expertly with the high-stakes environment of war and magic.

The merfolk in this universe are nothing short of enchanting. They are not mere myth but vital players in the political and magical fabric of the story. Their culture, mystique, and complex society bring a fresh and captivating element to the narrative. Lauren does a fantastic job of blending merfolk lore with original world-building, making the underwater realm feel alive, immersive, and full of secrets waiting to be uncovered. I really enjoyed Cahira and the other Tide Keepers, and I was overjoyed to see how strong Nox has become since we saw them in the first novel.

Overall, Tides Keeper is a compelling blend of political intrigue, relationship drama, and mystical merfolk that will satisfy fans of YA fantasy seeking a story filled with adventure, magic, and emotional depth. Whether you're captivated by the high-stakes diplomacy or the tender, tumultuous romances, this novel delivers all that and more; an exhilarating voyage that leaves you eager for the next tide.

Diving back into the world of merfolk and pirates with the crew of the ‘Tide Breaker’ was something I’ve been so keen to do since I finished book 1 last year. So I was a bit sad when I read the ‘Tide Breaker’ was grounded and wasn’t sailing in this book - but there was by no means any less action.

8 months after the events of Tide Bound, we find Kiojah, our narrator and FMC, and her prince in the royal castle at Nevaron, fulfilling their princely and princessly duties. Meanwhile, Kiojah’s homeland Setoni has been invaded by pirates and Kio is sick of waiting around for something to happen. So she sets sail with the remaining ‘Tide Breaker’ crew (on a different ship) to find some answers.

The strongest part of Tide Keeper is definitely the characters. In the first book we meet Nox, who is a valry and is part of ‘Tide Breaker’’s crew, and they play a central role in this second book. I love the way their character is written and how we get to learn so much more about them and their people. Similarly, another OG crew member Taerun is dealing with unending grief and trauma from an event in book 1 and she takes a turn for the nasty. She drove me mad at times but I also loved the way she was written and how she represented what grief can do.

Another great part of this book (well, the duology as a whole) is the relationship between Kiojah and Ario. It is a slooooow burn but there is none of that initial attraction that so many romantasy books have. It’s not an enemies to lovers, but rather an arranged marriage to reluctant crew members to tentative allies and eventually lovers. But their relationship remains fraught with danger over the whole duology and it was really refreshing to see a ‘real’ relationship in a romantasy.

Aside from a few minor plot holes and some loose ends, I enjoyed this book. The characters are excellent and the world building is also top notch. Fans of politically charged seafaring adventures will love this!

2 ⭐️

I want to talk about how good the world building continued to be in this book, but it's difficult to do without spoilers. Let's just say we visit a new city and we get some beautiful scenery as well as some new species to learn about.

I really liked Kio's friendship with Nox in this one. It offered some shining moments in the story. I also found the issues around the merfolk vs. humans to be an echo of some of the behaviours we are seeing in the world right now and it was handled quite well.

Pacing wise, we again move very quickly. But I do think there was too much going on this time. We jump from one problem to the next with them being solved fairly easily.

There's an event in book 1 that changes most of the characters for the worse, in my opinion. Ario and Kio regress in their relationship. She goes back to being naive and her complaining at him for being more focused on the war than her. Taerun, however, just becomes completely unbearable. I liked the way her story ended, but I went from really liking her in book 1 to hating her in this one.

The main problem is that no one communicates. Everyone just guesses or is angry with no hope of talking about any of it. Towards the end of book 1, Kio had some great moments where you can see her changing for the better. The same thing happens in this one, some really very strong moments. I would have liked more of that for the whole book.

I'm quite sad because i enjoyed the premise for the series, but in the end, it just didn't work for me. Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read the book early.

Eight months later after Setoni falling, Ario, Kiojah and the crew end up in Freon. The ship being destroyed, and pirates controlling lands. Kiojah stands up for her home, as well as fixing the alliance with the merfolk. The crew being torn apart, and friendships turning into betrayal, Kiojah and Ario do everything in their power to do what’s right for her home and people, and to make their future positive.

Many times I wanted to scream at all the characters for their betrayals and for not working together, but they all came together in the end. Kiojah wasn’t a fragile and insecure princess anymore. She was confident, strong, and developed into an amazing woman.
Ario being so offput from the first book, to a now head over heels and protective husband. They hid secrets from each other to protect, but they always had each others backs and did anything to rescue each other.

This story had so many different turns I wasn’t expecting, and even though I did want a bit more between Ario and Kiojah, the descriptions and engagement to find out what was going to come next, especially after the deaths was captivating.

This was such a good HEA, and a happy future to look forward to. I love this story concluding everything that I was so heartbroken about, especially how forgiving Kiojah is, which was a good thing in the end. This was such a fun story to read.

What a… tidal wave from start to finish.

Tide Keeper takes off a few months after the fall out from the end of Tide Bound. And once it starts, it takes off and doesn’t stop.

An action packed plot, filled with politics, war, and adventure, yet with such complex character developments. Each character had such a unique story to face, especially Taerun. Oh lord did that woman make me MAD - but her behaviour was expected for what she dealt with. Kiojah’s character development was incredible - we see her become a power woman, standing up for what is right no matter the danger. I appreciated the depth in which we saw Nox’s story as well - as this novel allowed them to step further into the spotlight.

My favourite aspect of this novel was that every character had their flaws. It made me be able to connect to the characters and appreciate their complexity. Ario especially, as I wanted nothing more than for him to give his head a shake - but his actions were realistic and it was something I really appreciated. Another aspect I absolutely adored was the imagery of Nereviss and the characters we meet in the beautiful under water city.

I am so sad to see this Duology come to a close, but I am so excited for future works by Lauren.

If you haven’t yet, do yourself a favour and get your hands on this sea faring adventure. You won’t regret it!

My favorite thing about this book, actually this duology, is that while this isn’t my normal genre, it pulled me in and kept me interested from the very beginning. This is also one of the very few YA books I’ve read where I’ve felt connected to the characters. Normally, it’s hard for me to connect to the YA characters because I’ve got a child that age, and I’m in a different chapter of life. Ario and his crew, though, were all relatable in their own ways, even the ones that I didn’t care for in this book. Ahem, Taerun.

Lauren has a way of captivating you with her world-building and the beautiful scenes she paints with her writing. I loved that I could visualize every scene.

Ario and Kiojah both had moments of growth while also keeping true to themselves and the stubborn individuals they can be.

I really enjoyed meeting the new characters, especially Cahira. You could feel the bada** radiating off of her, and it’s so hard not to like her.

I think the only thing I didn’t love about this was all of the miscommunication. That is not my favorite trope, so that’s definitely a me issue.

I can’t wait to see what Lauren writes next.

"I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.” Tide keeper. This is the second book in the Tide Bound duology, continuing the journey of Kiojah and Ario. If you haven’t read the first book, I highly recommend starting there it lays the foundation beautifully for everything that unfolds here.
Kiojah’s growth in this installment is remarkable. From the spoiled, fiery girl we first met, she has transformed through hardship, sacrifice, and resilience. Laurens’ vivid writing once again brings the lands of Setoni and Nevaron to life with incredible clarity.
The characters remain just as compelling as in book one, and I found myself completely immersed in their stories. I especially loved seeing the development of familiar characters and was thrilled by the deeper role the merfolk played this time around.
Of course, Kiojah and Ario’s dynamic continues to shine full of stubborn clashes and fiery tension, with neither willing to back down. While this book wraps up the duology perfectly, the world and characters are so rich that I can easily imagine (and hope for!) spin-offs in the future.💛

Eight months after the end of Tide Breaker, the crew is dealing with all that has happened and the opportunity to make a new treaty with the sea creatures to restore peace between land and sea, but not everyone wants what’s good for all…
This finish that I was blessed with an early copy of, thank you, Lauren!, was such an emotional roller coaster of grief, betrayal, loss, forgiveness, growth… there wasn’t a single second the feeling wasn’t incredibly intense, even if it was just being uncomfortable in the situation. Almost every character saw some sort of growth on this journey, or at least were put on the path. The social commentary was incredible (READING IS POLITICAL!) and impossible to miss, but not in a way that it ruined the story. The only thing keeping it from being as liked as the first is that it ended when I’d really like to see the relationships develop further. I love the girls and want to see them grow, and how Kiojah continues to thrive in her new life outside of a “spoiled rich girl.” 100% recommend.

Tide Keeper is book 2 in the Tide Bound Duology, an YA arranged marriage fantasy romance with high stakes seafaring adventures, magic, battles and tangled alliances, political intrigue, mermaids, sea creatures and pirates. The story follows Princess Kiojah and her crew as they navigate fractured alliances, perilous waters, pirates and vengeful merfolk and personal struggles, to rebuild her lands and lead her people.

I loved the strong grief and anxiety representation, world building, immersive imagery, and diverse array of magical creatures of this world, and was especially fond of Grell and Tidbit the black cat. There are themes of trust, secrets, love, betrayal and forgiveness. The story is very character driven and has messy characters and family dynamics, found family and a fade-to-black childhood enemies to lovers, arranged marriage romance between a fiery princess and a devoted prince. The romance has hurt/caretaking, slow burning tension, banter and lots of secrets. This was such a fun story!

Thank you Lauren O’Brien for an ARC copy of this enchanting duology!

Thanks to Lauren O’Brien and her team, I was able to read Tide Keeper in advance.
This is the second book in the series, and you do need to read the first book to understand what’s going on.

Lauren did a phenomenal job creating this world that Ario and Kiojah live in 🙂‍↕️ the way she is able to create such an intricate world and create her own aspects was out of this world ! Her descriptive writing is fantastic bc you can literally imagine what’s going on in the world and not miss a thing !

Kiojah truly had such an impressive character arc where she grows into the leader that her people needs! Despite being married to Ario, she always stuck to her own beliefs and didn’t care what anyone else thought! However, there were moments where it seemed that she was starting to waver and think about what she should do, but not once did she back down from what she truly believed in.

4.5 stars rounded up.

This was such a good conclusion to the duology, and I found myself not wanting to put it down.

Kio continued to grow as a person, and I actually liked that the relationship between her and Ario required them both to continue working on it as a whole. It made their connection feel stronger in the end, although I wish they had gotten back on the same page a little sooner.

I especially liked how Heston became a key player in this one and how he accompanied them on their adventure. I enjoyed learning more about Nox, and I loved their friendship with Kio.

While I liked the conclusion to the story as a whole, there was just something about this one that was missing the original charm of the first book which knocked this book down half a star for me.

What a fantastic conclusion to this unique and intriguing duology. I really enjoyed seeing how the characters have grown after their experiences in Tide Bound the first book. The journey they need to embark on in order to achieve the world they’ve always dreamed of was riveting. Constantly questioning who you can truly trust. I really loved seeing Kiojah grow into such a motivating leader. There are times where it seems like she may give up the very hope and that belief in a better world that defines her character. This adversity kept me engaged and longing to know what happens next.

Highlights:
✨Merfolk x Humans
✨Pirates
✨Unique Magic
✨Vibrant World Building
✨HEA

Favorite Quote: “This new version of me still feared the savage and unexpected loss of her loved ones. But she knew it was better to worship those she loved in the meantime than allow fear to rule her.”

Tide Keeper picks up not long after the events of Tide Bound, drawing us deeper into the lore and political intrigue as Ario and Kiojah work toward creating peace.

This story both captivated and moved me. Watching the characters navigate the aftermath of Tide Bound was powerful, the ease of their once-strong friendship now tested and reshaped.

Alongside this, both Ario and Kiojah embark on personal journeys, finding themselves in places they never expected to be.

I loved exploring more of the sea world, felt my heart race with Ario and Kiojah's romance, shared their anger at betrayal, and grieved with the unexpected twists. The last 100 pages in particular pulled me in completely, the descriptions, the action, and the emotion were masterfully done.

I cherished every moment in this world, and I’m genuinely sad to see it come to an end. Thank you, Lauren O’Brien, for creating and sharing such an unforgettable adventure.

I received an ARC of this book, but these are my genuine thoughts and reflections, shared voluntarily.

Tide Keeper continues Ario and Kiojah’s stories as they embark on a journey to make treaties with the merfolk that have been staunchly defending the ocean and preventing water travel. Afterwards, they must team up with allies turned enemies to try to retake Kiojah’s homelands from pirates.

Lauren has done it again. Wow. This continues the story and plot in a perfect way with so much more depth to the characters that wasn’t very touched on in book one. It’s like book one said, here’s a nice story with romance. Book two says, here’s that same basis but let’s completely deep dive into what makes this world and its characters tick. Couldn’t put it down. Can’t recommend enough.

OH WOW I absolutely loved this story . It was a steamy page turner and the suspense was so intense. I was on the verge of my seat and I couldn’t even put it down like literally. It was an action of romance with underwater creatures and incredible adventures with a hint of betrayals as the plot twists thinned. Best story ever with drama and chaos that was under water in that moment life and pain and love.
I definitely recommend this book and you won’t be disappointed. I received advance copy of this book Happily Book RP via Bookfunnel and am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion. Trina Jones

The Characters:

Kiojah: A total queen. 👑 loved seeing her step into her power.
Taerun: Frustrating? Yes. Understandable? Also yes.
Nox: Finally got the spotlight they deserved!
Ario: I wanted to shake him, but his flaws made him feel so real.
Highlights: ✨ The imagery of Nereviss (the underwater city) was stunning. ✨ The plot is fast-paced—it takes off and doesn't stop. ✨ The characters are messy, flawed, and relatable.

Political Struggles

Book 1 Tide Bound set precedence for this fantasy duet that was imaginative as well as captivating. Picking up a little while after the end of the previous book, Kiojah and Ario try to acclimate to their new surroundings and perform their duties as needed. The character development of this book finally took shape in a way that was eventually satisfying and kept me turning the pages. It was definitely an entertaining and exciting story that i could not get enough of.

The characters are incredibly well-developed and their struggles feel deeply real, especially Kiojah, who is a fantastic protagonist. The world-building is rich and immersive, pulling you into a world on the brink of war. I was captivated from the very first page and couldn't put it down. This was a fantastic second half to the duology and I felt so many different emotions during Kiojah's journey. The ending was perfect, but I am sad to leave this world behind.
I loved that Kiojah found her own strengths which weren't the typical ones we see in these stories, and the relationship between Ario and Kiojah was so real with what they went through it was all just perfectly executed.

Highly recommend this duology to everyone.

Much anticipated sequel to Tide Bound!

I was really looking forward to what came next for Kiojah, Ario, and the gang. And I have to say, Lauren did not disappoint! This book was action-packed with complex new worlds to explore. There was a great balance between action and emotionally-driven moments, and Lauren did a wonderful job bringing the story to a satisfying conclusion. Sad to say goodbye to these characters, but I would most definitely read spin-offs if they were to happen!

The world building in this book is so good. I could really feel and imagine all the space that we went.

The characters are dynamic and fun to read. They all have their own issues and struggles and it’s fun to see how they all handle it.

This story had me feeling many emotions from sadness to joy and then to worry and anger. I am very excited to see what comes next for Lauren.

O'Brien maintains excellent world building and adventure with Tide Keeper. The story is captivating, and the descriptive detail ensures readers are never bored. The FMC and MMC relationship, however, is quite toxic, and although the FMC seems much more mature in this book compared to the first, their interactions take me out of the story.

Really well written. I loved seeing how Kiojah and Ario grew in their relationship. Not only that but the growth in every single character. Its an easy read that drew me into the story line. It was a great addition from book 1 "Tide Bound". I also love that its like a tie between romantasy and historical aspects. for those looking for no spice this is the book for you.
